We leave tomorrow right after school. I usually find myself paranoid that something will happen to stop our trip. I never expected this little bump in the road. Last night ds (6) took a bath in my tub with my shower gel and lavendar epson salts. He started to cough a bit but he is finishing up a cold. I opted to give him benadryl instead of cough syrup. (turned out to be the best random thing I've ever done) This morning he came running to me yelling, "mommy look at my eyes". I turned around and the poor boy looked like a prize fighter. :rotfl2: After I stuffed the gasp back down my throat, I calmly asked him if he had eaten anything. He denied. I quickly took him up the stairs to the medicine cabinet and gave more benadryl. My husband turned around to see what we were doing and gasped in horror. :rotfl: Yeah, not what this kid needed to hear. Big sister 9 let out a small scream and big sister 7 just quietly looked horrified. It was hard not to laugh at the responses. He really did look horrible. His eyes were swollen to slits and his lips were about 3 sizes too big. If anyone has seen the Will Smith movie, Hitch, when Hitch had a reaction to seafood, that is what he looked like. After a visit to the doctor he was given prescription for steroids and an epi pen. The doctor said he was probably starting the allergic reaction last night when he started coughing. Thank God I gave him benadryl instead of cough syrup and sent him to bed. The swelling went down a bit during the day. He had been in bed about 2 hours when I could hear his breathing from across the hall. I went to check on him and he was swollen again. Silly mommy should have changed his sheets. I think he is allergic to the bath stuff or epson salts. So, another round of benadryl and a change of sheets. I don't know if I can make it through the night. I have to drive to Disney tomorrow night. This kid is gonna be the death of me. lol

Oh no! That's awful. I hope he is feeling better by the morning and that you make it do Disney safe and sound.

I cannot imagine how this felt! One night before Christmas my daughter had to have her "pretty pajamas" on for Santa, and against my better judgment I let her wear them, problem they had yet to be washed. I was up finishing things for the next day downstair , when I heard her moan in sleep, then a few minutes later a bit louder. I just started to walk up stairs when I heard, " STOP PINCHING ME", which of course made me race up the stairs! She was screaming at this point, I flipped lights on, and she was blood red, and I knew to immediately strip off pajamas, and put her in shower, while yelling for someone to bring me the benadryl. Seems the new kids pajamas from CHINA are slathered in flame retardant, and this is happening more and more, as we were told by ER doctor. I felt foolish because I knew better to let my child wear any new clothing prior to washing.

She even had a reaction standing by kids pajamas one day in the store, she cannot get near them now, crazy as it sounds.

I hope that everything has smoothed out for all of you, hope he is in tip, top shape!

Take him to the dr ASAP. My son once had an allergic reactin that needed a stronger antihistimine that the doctor has to write a perscription for. They may also be able to give him eye drops for comfort.

Look on the good side. He should sleep all the way there!!!!!

She did take him to the doctor...

(((Hugs))) to you, toy, and your son - have a great trip!

It is scary! Hopefully in a couple days he will be in better shape. Well rested as well!

Sounds like a contact allergy. This happened to ds11 once when he was playing outside, and he came in looking like the Elephant Man. We never found out what caused it, but he has been diagnosed with seasonal allergies since, so probably one of those.

Thanks for the warm wishes. My little prize fighter is doing much better. He is only slightly swollen this morning which is a huge improvement over this time yesterday. I am an emt and I teach first aid and cpr. So, while I teach other people all the time how to use an epipen, now I have to teach my own family. :) After we get back from Disney I am going to take him back to the doctor so we can figure out what he is allergic to.

Funny epi-pen story....

We carry one all the time but have never had to use on on DGS 3. The first time DH was taking him off without me after the diagnosis I was going to show him how to use the epi-pen. I HAD the tester out. Somehow he had also laid out the REAL epi-pen. Picked up the wrong one and YEP.. did it on me!!:confused3
AT least I am sure how to use it!!!! :goodvibes

How scary for everyone!! I'm sure everything will be fine shortly. My ds likes to swell randomly like that. We...or the doctors...have never been able to pinpoint a trigger. It's random. DH does it also. He's experienced enough with it that he just takes a benedryl....carries them everywhere....as soon as he feels a tingling. DS thinks it's hilarious when his lips swell. Says he looks like a movie star :rotfl2: Not so fun for Mom though.

I have severe allergies as in anaphylactic shock. I am very careful with the foods that I eat. I am also pretty strict on laundry.

I use the frangrance and dye free Oxy Clean in every load. That along with All Free and Clear make a big difference. I don't use hot water in the clothes washer. You will find that the Oxyclean takes care of the dust mites, etc. You may want to move towards the All Free and Clear and the Oxyclean. It can't hurt, and it can help with any stuffiness you may get from dust mites. :thumbsup2

Sorry this happened. The big thing to keep in mind is that allergic reactions take a lot out of you. Get him to rest as much as possible before WDW. Your body has been through a lot. A few times, I felt like I had been hit by a truck the next day. Just bone tired :sad1:

At least you are prepared to use the epipen if necessary. I know a family that still won't use the epipen when their child has SEVERE food allergies. He has gone into anaphylaxis many times. They drive to the hospital instead of using the epipen THEN driving to the hospital. The poor little boy has gotten very close to his airway completely closing. The doctors and ER staff have lectured them. Still they don't use it :sad2: Breaks my heart to think about how scary that must be for him. And then, angry that they won't give the child a shot to save his life and instead take that gamble

:scared1: Wow! My heart races and I get the shakes so bad my muscles are sore. I can't imagine accidentally using it when I'm not having a reaction :scared1:

For what it's worth, it doesn't matter WHERE they are made. Unless you get the pure cotton, close-fitting, pajamas, kid's pajamas in America have flame retardant on them. And that stuff is made to not wash off entirely. We refuse to use that sort of nonsense. We have a family bed and hubby and I don't wear flame retardant pjs, so what's the point of DS wearing them? So we get the pure cotton (Costco has even had some lovely organic cotton pjs) close-fitting (the legal alternative to coating in flame retardant chemicals), pajamas and we're all happy.

OP I bet it's the lavender. Love that stuff, but sometimes it makes my lungs feel funny. Can't imagine a reason why a simple salt like is in epsom would cause a reaction. Unless he drank a bunch of bath water?

I accidentally poked the tip of my finger with one of ds8's when we were discharging expired pens into an orange - my finger was sore for days. Luckily we've never had to use it on ds - came close a few times and had to call the paramedics but the Benadryl has always kicked in in the knick of time. We carry a small container with Benadryl Fastmelts and 2 EpiPen's.

Also, for the person that that had the accidental stick - you do know that you are supposed to go to the hospital after ephinephrine is injected? It can cause a heart attack in a person that didn't need it.

That would be me:cool1:. I did know BUT... I kinda waited it out..it was the junior so maybe less medication. I did feel bad for a while and I made sure I was not alone but I was ok.

As for the parents that would not carry one, would that not be a DSS case. That is SOOOOO scary. We go NO WHERE without one. I can not imagine:confused3

Poor guy. I hope he is feeling better and got some rest. Hope you guys have a wonderful trip.

My DH has had two random anaphylactic shocks episodes the last four months. One in November after eating at a Longhorn and the other upon waking from bed. Just crazy.

The epi-pen really stopped the progression of symptoms this last time. The first time we didn't know what was happening so I just threw zantac and benedryl at him until we got to the ambulance.

He was allergy tested but they found NO cause as of yet.

Do all of you with anaphylactic reactions in the family, do you feel safe traveling (we drive from PA to WDW) and also in the parks do you feel safe if an event were to occur?

We have our trip already planned for August but I'm really scared to go not knowing what is causing all of this.

My mom is very sensitive to OxyClean - she breaks out in hives from it, so that might not be a good choice for someone with topical allergies.

I am not sure about other areas my daughter's ER doctor specifically said CHINA, and also mentioned issues with furniture.

I now make most pajamas with 100% cotton, or I have been able to buy them online. I no longer use softener, I do use 1/2 - 1 cp of vinegar in rinse, and I try to line dry everything. I have not bought ANYONE in our house pajamas with flame retardant on them since this episode.

My nieces worked at one of the department stores told me when they open up the boxes to unpack merchandise there are times you can smell the chemicals off the clothing, and she has to be careful with her allergies there too.

Crazy stuff:scared1:

The regular Oxyclean is too much for me as well. I break out in a rash. They make a dye and fragrance free oxyclean that works for me ;)
