We were talking about our last cruise (and this one) at break the other day. Pirate night came up and I told them I went as Mr Gibbs. They asked my DW what she dressed as and before she could answer I said: "My wench". She almost clobbered me! The others at the table got a good laugh. :lmao:

.... I am going to give the DISboards a break for awhile and will check back in occasionally to see what you're up to ...... but I have to give it a break .....

:sad1: I understand but I am still :sad1:

By the way I have 4 coupons for 1 month free of Netflix. If anyone wants one just let me know. All I have to do is PM you a code that you enter into the website. Then you'll get a free month and I'll get an extra movie.:thumbsup2

Oooh, I might take you up on that. We were talking about switching to Netflix. We've been doing the Blockbuster one for a while because they had the thing where you could return the mailed ones to a brick and morter store and get out one of their movies free - trade it in, so to speak. This worked out great for DH cause he can go through 5 or 6 movies in a weekend. They're still doing the same thing, but now it's limited to 5 turn-ins a month and that only lasts him a week or two of the month. So yeah, now he's considering going to Netflix.

I'll talk to him about it and see what he says :)

Very good point. We can get wrapped up in "the good ole days" but I do remember being able to go Trick or Treating by myself as a kid and now parents ride around in a car and follow their kids as they walk along the sidewalk. :confused3 Are people nowadays over-protective or just more aware? That is the $64,000 question.

- Bill

I think it's a little bit of both. And you hear so much about copycat crime, and the media is all over everything, that we end up thinking the worst. Why do they scan shoes at airports? Why do we have "caplets" now instead of capsules? Cause someone tried something horrible and we want to make sure someone else doesn't try it again. Sometimes it seems like all we're doing is making criminals find ways to be more clever.

And don't even get me started on the Urban Legends of things that really didn't happen but everyone looks over their shoulder for....geez.

We lived in a neighborhood with a girl who we just knew was going to be a girl who "Cried wolf" for attention and DH used to come home from work at noon and be home all day. When we had a litter of puppies, he would NEVER let the girl come into the house when he was alone no matter how much she wanted to see the dogs. He either took them outside in a pen in front of the house or waited until her parent could come over. He never wanted to be in a situation where there was any doubt.

Same with DrHug. We were Girl Scout co-leaders for several years. Yep, he is a card carrying Girl Scout....anyway, he was very, very careful even way back then to never be alone with any of the girls. For his protection, not theirs. :rolleyes1

:woohoo: Bill was on the phone today with our DVC contact. He had a whole list of questions to ask her. We always like to look at all our options and then make an educated decision. We are impressed with the DVC discount for an AP.

You can also purchase the dining plan without having park passes. :) Not that we would ever go there without park passes! But you never know.

Oh, I'm sitting here thinking about the cruise, all you folks planning on uninterrupted dinners and such, and praying the kids will be happy in the clubs! We chose this particular vacation on this particular cruise line b/c I was hoping for some grown up time!! Funny reason to pick Disney, I know, but I trust them to keep the kids safe and happy. We don't have relatives we'd trust to leave the kids and have never left them overnight. ("Trust" sounds funny; MIL is too frail to be physically capable of keeping them safe, responding in an emergency. I have a sister and brother I'd trust but they live on the other side of the country.) Dh's sister has her dh's extended family and they've already left the kids (4 years and...6 mos), several times and I reeeeally don't get that, if I'm on vacation it's family time, but you know, a few hours here and there sounds *wonderful* . (SIL and BIL don't vacation with the kids, ever. I suppose that will change as the kids get older.)

Ds (7) has "sensory issues" (sensory integration disorder) and is absolutely fine when we run interference for him, not sure how the counsellors will be. Have heard varying reports...if he's "forced" to participate not on his terms, it'll be a disaster, but if they give him the freedom to join when he feels comfortable, there are so many things that look like they'd be so much fun for him. Who here has experience with the clubs? I've posted in some threads on the main board about the clubs, but I'm always interested in more experiences...Dd is a sunny little person, I worry less about her though she's still only 4. The worst that will happen with her is a little separation anxiety, something that's easy enough to fix if it comes up.

One thing I've never seen posted is how many kids will actually be around at a given time. I know it varies, but curious to know what the sort of "max" is, what the working ratio of kids:counsellors seems to be.

Anyway, just rambling...time to go make pizza. (Pizza night is Friday but it's Thursday today b/c we're going away for the weekend. The kids would mutiny if we missed pizza night just for a TRIP!)

We have had several GKs in the clubs at one time or another, none with the issues your son has though. BUT, I do know that the counselors will do whatever they can to see that he has a good time. Last Dec we had our youngest DGS7 with us. He did not like the organized activities too much (he did go to a couple, but not his favorite) but he loved being in the club during free time. So, we looked at his navigator and planned his trips there for mostly during free time. Read this as run and play on the Pirate ship time! Your son may do better during organized times when the kids are not running around but rather making Flubber or some other activity. Talk to the counselors first day. They will help you know what goes on and they will make friends with him.

I have looked a little on there but to look more would take away from time on this board. :) I am curious about the difference in home resorts...specifically VWL.

Brack (or anyone else :)), do you own points at that resort? If so, how does it compare to the others? Thanks.

- Bill

We own at VWL and BCV. I will have to say that it is just personnal preference. Brack and Annette LOVE VWL, Dennis and I did not like it at all. :confused3 We stayed there last year for the first time. We are booked there this year because that is what we could get at the 11 month time. We are waitlisted for OKW and SSR. So, we LIVE in the Northwest and Wilderness Lodge is just like where we live. We want TROPICAL!!! when we are in Florida. We also like OKW because it is a DEDICATED DVC resort. Everyone you meet at OKW is DVC CM. At VWL we felt like the staff in WL treated us like we were "over there" and said Welcome Home only as an after thought. This was a year ago though and we did submit a comment card stating this, so they may have changed that feeling. I know Brack and Annette just went and were very happy there. He can give you their perspective. We have stayed at BCV and we liked it there alot also. SSR is dedicated and heard AKL is going to have their own DVC check in, so it must be an issue with more folks than just us.

Now I am totally down and need to think happy thoughts for awhile. Maybe I'll watch Lilo & Stitch or Toy Story! :happytv:

You've got a friend in me, you've got a friend in me.la,la,la,la....I LOVE that movie and that song!

I was also trying to compare the different resorts. For instance some have kids clubs and some don't. But then I realized its not just about what works for us now, but also the future since the membership is for 45-50 years! I actually like the SSR location, because you can walk to DTD which offers so many different types of activities. And as long as you don't travel at peak times - which I try to avoid anyway, can't stand the crowds - I don't think its too hard to book another resort 7 months out. I want to try them all!

The first week in Dec is tough for DVC bookings even though it is low season. The owner meetings are that week and lots of DVC folks just seem to like to go that week. We are among them! ;)

And statistically, was it even safer back then? Or were we blissfully ignorant because some incidents went unreported?:confused3

I think that it is just that we hear about these things more now so we are aware. A murder in Ohio would never have been reported in Colorado when I was a kid, although I am sure murders did happen in Ohio then. 24 hours news slots needing to be filled, internet with instant information from around the world. I think we are just more aware, which may be good, may be bad.
