01/02/10- Mickey's New Decade Brigade!

Hope everyone had a nice Easter (or Passover, if that's your thing).

One major holiday down, four to go before we set sail!

I have been a little bit under the weather the last week or so. I am rarely sick, so this is pretty odd for me. I am hoping that I get all the sickness out of me before the end of the year!

Pacem to all.

We just reserved a stateroom on this cruise. I will be traveling with DH, DS (7) and DD (3). Traveling as well is my Sister, her husband, and three kids DD (13), DS (13), DD (7). Also, on the trip is my Mom and Step-Dad.

We are a fun group~

My Sister (and her crew) and My Mom and Step Dad have all cruised on DCL before. This is my family's first trip. I am VERY excited!

Hello the1scarlet! Welcome to our Cruise Meet thread! It sounds like you have a nice size group coming with you on the trip, and I'd like to suggest that you read some of the preceding posts regarding some of the activities our cruise meet is planning for the trip. Nothing is set in stone yet, but we are bouncing back and forth lots of ideas. For starters we have decided to definitely do the Fish Extender exchange...if that is something that you and your family would like to participate in but do not know a lot about, I have a summary in post #91 on Page 7 of our thread. If you have any other questions though please feel free to post them here. Have a good night!

Hi All!!

I have been CRAZY BUSY  trying to get everyone's final payments in for my School at Sea cruise out of Galveston this September. Geesh!! Trying to get schoolwork completed, :teacher: get my DS David to his hockey games :headache: ... and he just got braces this week!! :teeth: And trying to meet with my teen troop to schedule their Gold Award requirements :goodvibes ... I thought I would be way behind here :scared1:

What's worse is NO ONE IS POSTING!?!?! :sad2:

Did I miss something :confused3 or is everyone just as busy as I am this week :faint:

Well here's some pixie dust for everyone pixiedust:

I am off to read the DIS posts :surfweb: while I watch the hockey game - GO DUCKS!! :cheer2:

Hope everyone is well.

Hey ya'll! I am back from Memphis!

This was our "dress rehearsal" for our cruise so to speak, since this is the last time we will be traveling before the cruise. We will probably visit family at some point, but this was our chance to sort of measure and estimate what we need to change, what we need to do, etc etc.

We had a couple of revelations that definitely have us concerned. Our first major concern is undoubtedly packing. The last time we traveled by air, airlines had not implemented a baggage fee yet. We have never had to pack efficiently before, as it has never really been an issue. I tend to be an overpacker in general anyway, so this was definitely a test for me.

Well for a weekend......not even two full days, basically one and a half day, I packed a duffle bag full, stuffed to the gills....and I wore every last piece of clothing. On one hand, I normally have clothing left unused, and this time, I brought the bare minimum of each item I needed. And that is a good thing. On the other, a full duffle for TWO DAYS? That is something that definitely has to improve. But, I mean, I wore the clothes. In fact some of the clothes, I had to re-wear. So, I am going to spend the next few months really trying to hone my packing skills.

Also, we had some disappointment issues. And, I have heard on here a million times not to go in with too high hopes, and you will be pleasantly surprised. But, come on people, when you plan for a year or more in advance, and in our case, it is our first time, it is really hard to keep our hopes in check. Our hotel was very nice in the common areas, and one of our travel companions' room was very nice; our room, while clean, was in need of maintenance, and did not have the upgrades that the other room did. Also, one of the restaurants that we tried, that we had SO looked forward to trying ended up being a little bit of a bust.

We had a nice time anyway, but it was a case of forcing ourselves to overlook the problems. But, our cruise planning and expectations are 10 times what they were for our Memphis weekend, so you know, the bigger they are, the harder they fall. I am really worried that all these things we are looking forward to might be busts, that our stateroom might seem outdated, etc etc. At the same time, we are by nature planners, and we cannot help it, it's what we do.

Hope everyone else's weekend went well. :)

Hi Melissa,

I feel your pain with the luggage prices on the airlines these days. When my sister and I flew for our cruise this past January, since it was only 4 nights we were able to actually not check any luggage! It wasn’t hard for me because I have become really good at packing since I’ve gone on 10-13 day trips to Europe a few times where you are responsible for carrying you own luggage onto planes, trains, buses, and up many flights of stairs since many European hotels don’t have elevators (or they have one tiny one that fits like 1-2 people), so I’ve been able to perfect my packing to be able to fit enough close even for 10 days into a carryon on size rolling suitcase. It can be done. However, I don’t plan on doing that for this trip since we are doing 3 days at WDW, then 7 nights on the cruise, and I’ll need so many different kinds of outfits (pirate, formal, beach, excursion, theme park, etc). I know I COULD do it, but I don’t feel like taking the extra time and sacrificing some of the “extra” things I can bring if I check a suitcase instead. At least we are driving to WDW next month so we don’t have to pay for airfare or bags, so I’m not too bummed about checking bags for the January trip.

That said, the best advice I can give you to save space in luggage is to either purchase those Space Saver bags (I’ve never used them but heard from others that they work wonders), or do what I do: I roll up each article of clothing to save space. It sounds silly but it actually leaves them less wrinkled than folding them flat, and takes up much less space. I try to also only bring 1 pair of dress shoes to match every outfit I wear at night for dinner, like a neutral color or black ones to cut down on space since shoes are so bulky. Also if you don’t mind using the ships brand of toiletries (H2O, which many people rave about) you can leave your own shampoo, conditioner at home.

Regarding your disappointment about the hotel and restaurant you went to in Memphis, how did you pick those places? Were you referred by friends/family, or just randomly picked them, or did you read any reviews ahead of time? I am obsessed with using Trip Advisor for restaurant and hotel reviews. Some times I think people are dead wrong in their summaries of places (ie- they said it was awful and I loved it, or they said it was great and I hated it), but more often than not I find the advice pretty spot on so I always do my research before I go.

As far as being disappointed with the Disney cruise, I seriously doubt you will be. I think you should set your expectations high because you should expect good things from Disney. your family loves Disney so you will love the atmosphere, the characters, the shows, and of course Castaway Cay. As far as the rooms, yes it is true they are about 12 years old but they have been refurbished in dry dock before, and I always felt very impressed with my stateroom…I thought it looked just as good in January 2009 as it did on my first cruise in March 2004. Very clean, everything worked, very nice. The door was a little worn looking on the outside but I didn’t care since I had magnets covering it from top to bottom!

The only thing that I am concerned about is the food since we’ve been following that “Better not be cruising for the food” thread…but even then I’m not too worried because first of all I seriously think if it is that bad and DCL is surely getting wind of the complaints, that there is a good chance things will be different by January, but even if not, I have no doubt that I’ll be able to find something to eat each night.

Hope I have alleviated some of your worries!

Hi Karen! I can definitely understand where you are coming from being so busy lately. February-May is our busiest time at work with fundraisers for various charities, and we've had so many events lately, so between that, work, and school I've been swamped!

So, anyway, not too much has been going on in our thread...we've had 1 or 2 more people join the cruise, and so far I have 3 confirmed names on the Fish Extender list. However, i haven't put you on the list yet because I wanted to check with you first for some missing info...you told me that I could sign you up as TadsMommy and TadsDaddy, and that you preferred the first sea day for your delivery day, but I still need to know a few other things (you can PM me these details if you want): stateroom number(s), # of adults, # of children, last name of your family and where you are from, names of adults, names/age/gender of children. Also if you have 2 staterooms please let me know which people are in which room (so we know where to drop of the gifts). Thanks!

It seems forever since I have posted (it was back on page 3 or 4). I have been swamped with work, life, and everything in between. So hopefully now everything is back on track. On our first cruise in December, I was on the forum everyday. I see things are picking up. I can hardly wait.

We will be in for the fish extender, the boys had a blast the last time. It was so fun delivering, and we were all excited to see what we would get everyday. We were also in on the magnet exchange in December.

I know last time, I took to many clothes. So need to cut back this time. I was impressed though how well i was able to store everything in the room. We were in 6050 last time, it was a great room.

Anyways, thought I'd better post just to say hi to everyone.

As I said before, I am known in our family as the habitual overpacker. However, since our last big family vacation, I have improved leaps and bounds. I am hoping, with a few more overnights and weekend getaways before our trip that I will be good to go. Also, hopefully by the time we sail, my clothes will be smaller and take up less space! *crossing fingers*

As far as our hotel, it was a VERY nice hotel. We too are fans of TripAdvisor, and always consult it. This particular hotel was listed as the #5 hotel in Memphis, so we thought we would be alright. And to be fair, the hotel itself was beautiful, in great shape, offered nice amenities. As I mentioned, the other room was a little bit better kept than ours. Their countertop was granite, whereas ours was old laminate and had a crack in it. They had a newer showerhead; ours was visibly older, in need of update, and had rust around the rim. Our towel rods were wobbly and almost fell off the door. The actual sleeping area of our room was fine. It was just the bathroom I think that did us in. I am unsure as to why our room would not be as up to date as others. I guess it was an anomoly. What if we get another anomoly in January? I have read trip reports for our particular room, so I am hoping we'll be okay, but they are not relatively recent, so........:confused3

I have also been following the food threads. There have been a lot of bad things posted, and I am hoping they get all the kinks shaken out by the time we sail. I also hope that DCL takes customer concerns into consideration, and fixes the things people have been unhappy about. I keep watching the threads waiting for someone to come back from a cruise and proclaim that DCL got their act together. That would make me feel a LOT better.

Welcome back to the thread! I definitely look forward to meeting everyone.

Time is really flying by, before you know it we will be packing for the cruise.:woohoo: I am trying to decide re: formal night. We went all out last time, there was such a mix. Some went really form:)al, and some were very casual. My DH had a suit, the DS's, I had found a great price for tuxes. Of course I got a new dress. This cruise, my DH doesn't want to do a suit. It was a lot of extras in the suitcase, just for the one night. But we'll see who wins this one.

We are planning on flying down on the 30th, we will be going to Sea World one day, and shopping another. Would you do Sea world on the 31st or the first.?? I'm debating re: New Years Eve at Sea World, anyone have any advice.

Hope everyone is enjoying the spring.:)

Will be packing?! Will be packing?! Honey, I have been "packing" for about 6 months now. Haha. Just kidding. I do have my little cruise box. And anytime I pick up something cruise related, it goes in the box. My box is full now. I may need a bigger box.

I am still trying to decide on formal night as well. I know my mom and dad will do classy-casual. Not sure about my sister. I would hate to show up with them looking casualish, and there I am in some sparkly number. BUT, at the same time, I am losing weight, and I have never been able to fit into super cute prommish dresses before. (only the oversized muumuu type prom dresses). So, I would LOVE to have an occasion to do that. And what better occasion than a cruise? Then again, I don't want to look out of place. Gah!

l LOVE Sea World! We have only been one time, but we loved it! We've been contemplating doing Coral World in St. Thomas. We are just going to be coming down the day before, chilling at the hotel, maybe doing the DTD thing.

God bless you all! Back to work!

Your doing good so far on your weight loss, I need to start refocusing as well. The food was so good on our cruise in December, I gained weight. I sure wasn't used to eating the awesome deserts every night.

What is coral world about? I haven't had a lot of time to start planning excursions. I have to fininsh our summer holiday planning first.

As for packing, as soon as we get our fish extender details I can start getting stuff. I was so unsure last time on what to get, but we got some great stuff and I now have lots of ideas.

Have a great TGIF tomorrow.

God bless you for your encouragement! I am trying my darndest. I figure as long as I am healthier tomorrow than I am today, and healthier next week than I am this week........as long as I head in the right direction, half the battle is won. I had the best of intentions to go up to the gym tonight, but I have a killer sinus infection and cannot breathe. No headache or anything, just cannot breathe. I am torn between trying to push through the trouble or taking a day to rest up.

Coral World is a little miniaturish version of Sea World.......a little marine life park. It has several exhibits as well as a bunch of activities (for extra cost of course), such as a sea lion swim, snuba, and a semi submarine adventure. The cost is really reasonable. For example, the sea lion swim, including admission to CW is $106. If you want to swim with sea turtles, including admission, the price is $53. PLUS, it is literally (I am told, never been) steps from Coki Beach, so if you are done at CW, or want a break for a while, you can be at the beach in like 2 minutes.

We are just going back and forth with what all we'd like to do. We tossed around the idea of doing a tour, or just doing shopping. With St. Thomas being an earlier all-aboard time, I am not sure what all we could do, but we'll see.

Bumpity bump bump ya'll...

How is everyone? Our deadline for the cruise theme is shortly approaching. We have about a month left till we will vote on it. So, if anyone has any new ideas different than what has already been suggested, let us know!

New in my life: this past weekend, I made a very big purchase, my very first car! I have a car that I have been driving since high school, but it was 17 years old. Time to move on.

I was looking somewhat newer pre-owned cars, in the 2005-2006 time frame. I got really lucky and found a 2008, with only 17,000 miles and a ton of warranty left on it. Being the tree hugger that I am, my new car is a..........drum roll please...........Toyota Prius! I got a super deal and could not be happier. I have just about 2 year full, 5 year powertrain, and 9 year hybrid system warranties left on it, so the peace of mind is priceless!

Now, let me tell you about something I COULD be happier about. These darn airlines/hotels. When they heck are they going to release January dates? I think I read that January rooms for Disney Resorts probably won't be released till August, so I am gonna try my hardest to be patient on that. But, I also read on another thread that for January of 09, AirTran released its dates in February of 08, and by May of 08, it was scheduling out till March of 09. So, why the heck is it holding off now? We DO know that Southwest will be releasing its dates on June 23rd, so I suppose we have at least a date, but still.....COME ON.

Off to the gym for now......hope everyone had a nice long weekend.

Congrats on the new car. I know I have been pricing flights as well, waiting patiently for some seat sales. which is not happening.

I know time is flying by, I am busy planning summer holidays. I have the first 3 weeks in July off. Plan on being at Mount Rushmore for the fire works.

Am relaxing today, sitting on my computer. :surfweb: Knowing tomorrow is back to the hectic spring schedule tomorrow and it is incredibably windy out. Not only do I work full time, spouse works shift work, but my youngest plays soccer 4 nights a week, and my oldest ball 4 days a week. (and I am the assistant coach and manager). So it is run, run, run. We sometimes have to drive as far as 1.5 hours away to play a game. i am looking forward to ball being done after the tourney on June 13th. Soccer goes to mid-July, but he will miss those last 2 weeks.

Hey Everyone! I'm so exhausted today after getting home at 5:00 AM from a long drive home from Orlando to NJ...so glad I didn't have to go into work today (although I'm still dreading going in tomorrow!) My family and I had another wonderful trip to WDW, great weather and lots of fun overall. It just flies by so fast, I hate to leave so much because it feels like we just got there! But one bright spot to count on is that leaving WDW behind I knew I had a great cruise to look forward to that really isn't that far away! And really for me, planning is almost half the fun...it really keeps me excited and happy all year long to be getting ready for Disney trips...and also my family and I are going out to San Diego in November, so I'm really looking forward to that...I haven't been back out there since I graduated college in 2007 (feels so long ago!) and of course, we will be spending a couple days at Disneyland in Anaheim on that trip too! So far in 2009 i've really been having my fix of Disney with my Wonder cruise in 1/09, WDW in 5/09, DL in 11/09, then WDW/Magic Cruise this December/January!!

Congrats on the car Melissa! Sounds like you really got a great deal, best of luck with it! Regarding waiting on Disney for the room bookings, it is true that you cannot book anything for 2010 online yet...usually they don't open that up until August which is quite frustrating. But you should never wait for the rates and booking to open online...you can call Disney directly or use a TA and have them book your room or package for you, and then when the official rates come out, your rate will be adjusted accordingly. This way, you can have the peace of mind of being booked early. We've always done this for our WDW trips because we usually go in March, and if we had waited until August to book each year, we would never have gotten our preferred room since we travel over the busiest Spring Break times. That said, my brother and I are already booked through our TA for Pop Century 12/30-1/2 for our pre-cruise trip. I have my official confirmations from Disney and everything, so I am good to go. Let me know how you make out if you decide to book now over the phone or with a TA.

:cheer2::cheer2:Hi everyone. We are joining you and have made the deposit (if all goes as it should it will stay that way)!! :cool1::cool1:

To introduce ourselves it is me Joleen age 35, DH 41, DS will be 1 ½, and what is to be a DD due any day now :rolleyes1 but will be about 6mo. Our last Disney Cruise was in Oct 2008. We also have a DS age 11 but he will not be going this time. This is to be mostly a parents only trip (but the little ones are to little to leave :rolleyes:for so long so I guess not really a parents only trip) Also, DS 11 was given the choice of a summer camp or going on the cruise, about the same cost as we would have had to add another cabin on, he chose the summer camp. We are also hoping to book another cruise with him included while on the ship, need to get that discount as we did not do it on the last cruise:woohoo:. It will either be October 2010 or 2011 depending on the itinerary.

Has anyone cruised in January? I am a bit concerned about the weather. We live in Colorado so anything will be a nice break than what we will likely have here. The October weather was great when we went. Not to hot and not to cold. It was a bit breezy on deck so we did not use the pool much. But we still had the best time!!:dance3: It was my first cruise and I have been eager to go on another ever since.

We are staying at the Orlando airport and taking the Disney transportation this time. Has anyone done this? There is a flight leaving at 1120, 10 then 430. I would love the 1120 flight as not to hang out at the airport with two kids under 2:sad2: while still not stressed over time. But what if the busses are full and we have to wait to leave the port? I plan on being off the boat by 830, on bus by 9, at airport by 1015 for 1120 flight. Think that will work?

Anyways it is great to join everyone.:cheer2::cheer2::cheer2: Hopefully we will be adding some more people as we get closer. By for now.

Hey guys, we've booked and we'll be joining you in January!

I'm Sara (21), a nursing student from Alabama. I'll be crusing with my parents and possibly a relative or family friend. We're a big Disney family and have been members of the DVC since.... forever? 1992, I think? We sailed in March on the Wonder(our first ever cruise) and absolutely LOVED it! I can't wait to get aboard the Magic and see the Eastern islands.

Joleen, I'm concerned about the weather too - more specifically, the water temp. It was pretty chilly in the water at Castaway Cay in March.

Two kids under two? God bless ya. Well, in any case, welcome to the group!

The weather is definitely a concern for me as well. We had the choice of September or January, and because I did not want to have to worry about the weather, we chose January. Touche, huh? It is not really the temps that have us worried, as we are from Indiana. The concern is over the wind and CC day. We just keep praying that the Good Lord gets us there.

Hey Sara! I am Melissa, and am also looking quite forward to visiting the Caribbean. My sister is also a nursing student. January was about the only time we could do that would fit with her clinical/class schedule.

NOTE: Our theme due date is in about a week and a half (July 2nd). If anyone has any ideas to add to the list, be sure to post in the next week!

Welcome to the newcomers. It is coming sooner than we think. I haven't thought of any other ideas for a theme. Where we at with our themes, which ones have we narrowed it down to.
Melissa you are doing good on the weight loss. I need to dig in my heels and lose again. It was a tough winter. I am a Nurse as well, have been for many years already. Take care all.

Karen
