Wow the non UK part of this has a tough crowd.

I lurk on the rumours board (and I think it is so really very funny). I have posted on the resort specific threads (Contemporary and GF) and have been given answers to my questions but it doesnt seem as friendly. I actually dont think I have really looked else where!!!!

Yeah i had a look on the rumours board last week for the first time and blimey did i run away quickly after :lmao: and i didnt dare make a comment!

Well I read the thread and I think at the end of the day it's a personal choice as to what you do and do not let your children do. I used to go off everywhere on my own when I was 14/15, made my first trip to WDW with a friend at 19 and this year I'll be 21 and my sister is 18 and we're going from the UK without any other relatives. My Mum will still expect to hear from us along the way to make sure we are okay etc but I think some of that is just the done thing. If my Dad goes away on a business weekend he still rings to let us know he's got there safely and rings when he's on his way home.

You can still trust someone an enormous amount but want to hear from them and be concerned about their safety regardless of age or gender.

Next April I'm escorting a trip of 13-16 year old girls to WDW and surrounding area and I can tell you now none of them will be going anywhere unsupervised. It just depends on the situation, I'm not any of these girls parent so they're all going to follow our rules.

Well, I think you're all wrong and I'm right, so there! (Just trying to even things up with the rest of the boards). :thumbsup2

By the way, I definitely pee the farthest. I'm well known for it round these parts.

Kevin Stringer, a Disboards tradition: lightening the mood and acting the fool since 1958. I feel a rendition of The Old Grey Mare coming on!

by the way, there is another board on the dis that has very nice people on it: the dis unplugged board....some really nice people there!!
and the podcast is very entertaining to listen to as well!

I have been frequenting various dis boards for a couple of years now and I have very rarely posted anything. I will search for answers to my questions rather than chance being treated the way I see so many others treated in response to their questions or statements.

I do not let my 16 and 10 year old go very far on their own. I even request a room close to the main building( we normally stay at Port Orleans riverside) so that they do not have to walk far alone at our resort.

You sound like a very responsible parent. This should be standard parenting.

I am very sorry you had a bad experience.

you can certainly go ahead and ask on here its a friendly board and we don't often bite:rotfl: If anybody is rude or out of line then they get a telling off by somebody or three or four:) The UK boards are definately the best IMAO anyway;)

Really? Showoff! Can we please have a few male DISers to challenge this arrogant man? :lmao:

I couldn't agree more :thumbsup2

I searched for the 'reclining' thread - that was an eye-opening read! I didn't realise that it was such a hot topic

The anonymity of forums allows people to address others in a way that they would never dare to if face-to-face. I believe that aggressive 'flamers' are probably disempowered in real life and need to gain a sense of superiority.

One of the main differences on the UK board is that a lot of posters know each other either through Dismeets or through Facebook.

Anyway, you should all defer to my superiority. Everyone knows that I am the greatest. And that is my final word on the matter. So can the Mods close this thread so that I can feel all powerful? Thanks.

Good theory and I understand where you're coming from, but the tight-knit UK DIS community pre-dates Facebook by almost a decade. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that Facebook has killed the UK Community board to some extent and I'm pretty sure the Comm mods would agree with me. It's just how it is.

The meets, admittedly, have been responsible for some of my closest friendships, but I'd still stick my neck out and claim that the friendly nature of the boards is the reason for the meets and ensuing relationships, rather than the other way around. :)

Spot on Deb, I remember the good old days of the UK Community board way before Facebook and it was alive with active posts and posters, and moved so fast there were days when even 3 mods struggled to keep on top. Im not sure those days will ever return but Mandy and I live in hope, even though we both agree that there is a place for both.:)

So come on guys/gals pop over and have some fun with us as well, I promise you, you wont get shouted at or flamed:goodvibes

Im so glad you think the same.At least its not just me being paranoid:)

Guilty confession: I carried on searching for random forum threads on the same topic and it made for very interesting reading (particularly the 300+ post thread on mumsnet...) I see that there isn't much room for compromise but I just don't understand how people get SO angry so quickly about it - I would never have expected to see phrases like "people who recline are disgusting" and worse! I won't know what to do when we fly! :confused3

Well that's just case in point then isn't it - it's not a UK/US issue. The UKTP posters have a different set of group dynamics. I refer to my previous comment in this thread: It's not "them" who are different - its "us" :goodvibes

I agree, so glad this was my first & only forum.
I did just lurk for about a year & must admit that an early reply to a 'pushchair' question got a bit heated, but was quickly disolved unlike the US side that seems to develop into full scale arguments. This seems to be controlled by the making of some subjects prohibited.

You know what my teacher used to say when I was 8 or 10yrs old ?

She would tell us this :

"Ask a stupid question and look stupid for one minute,
don't ask that question and you'll be stupid all your life"

Love it.

Same here... im almost afraid to ask something in case i do something wrong, and ive been snooping on here for years! :)
