Wk of May 20--WISH Walking/Running Club

MAN! Now I kinda want to stay at SSR for ToT!
We are waitlisted for BCV or BWV. I really have had no desire to stay at SSR. But if the party is going to be there... ;)

Kristi--Have you ever stayed at SSR? I love that resort. We stayed there last week and it was SO relaxing!!!! Granted BWV or BCV would be ideal for that weeked, but other than that, I'm excited to stay at SSR again. We've stayed at all the DVC resorts except for OKW, and if you take location out of the equation (because you can't beat the Epcot resort area), SSR is my hands down favorite DVC resort. Subject to change after AKL and Contemporary open their DVC sections. ;)

Hi guys.

I did this race on Sunday - in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Here is an excerpt from the report I posted on another list and hope that it is not too long:

All week long, I have been stressing. This marathon has notoriously poor weather conditions - in 2005, for example, it had weather reminicent of this year's Boston Marathon.

I swore that I would not race, or even train, in the rain, I am too big, too unsteady on my feet, the risk of slipping and injury is too great at this size, yada, yada.

Sunday morning, the rain was not as heavy, but steady, and I was in tears. I did not even put my chip on until we go to the race venue. I told everyone that I just was not going to start if it was like that at race time. At the same time, I desperately wanted to do the race and was certainly not looking for an excuse. I packed up my gear and went with the family.

This has become a real family affair for us. My father in law was a course marshall, right on a very key corner where he could see everyone, quite close to the finish line. My mother in law was out there with him. She told me that she would walk to the end with me if I got there, but neither of them expected to see me due to the rain.

My sister in law, Bonnie, was doing the half. She is the sweetest woman on planet earth, hugged me and told me that nobody would think any the less of me if I did not start. I told her I would just remain right there in that building, but I did get her to put my chip on, just in case.

I just sat there, watching everyone else gear up.

I got up and went to the volunteer lounge, asking if I could help out somehow if I did not start.
I sat, thought, then finally hauled out my gear and checked the bag. I left by the side entrance (runners were not allowed to use the front) and stressed that I would probably be back, that they told me I could stay in the volunteer lounge and help, and everyone told me that I would be able to enter again if that were the case. I walked up and pulled up my hood immediately, steady rain.
(Thank heavens for my Disney poncho).

I was really afraid to start.

So why did I?

There is always something for me that gets me to start even when I don't know if I can complete the race. At Disney (as I have shared before), it was an old lady with a cane, and a race number, going way slower than me. Here it was my father in law - out there for three plus hours in the pouring rain in the middle of his first round of chemo. I figured my petty little issues were nothing in comparison to this, he was the one who had the right to sulk at the deal life handed him, not me, my issues were largely self inflicted.

I needed to overcome this fear and step out.

So I did.

I never have trained in the rain - ever.

It rained steadily the whole time. With the help of my coach, Jeanne, I link up with my mother in law, eventually my husband too and make it to the end. They run out of 5k medals (green ribbon) and so I get one of the kids' medals (orange). Oh well, at least I have two different colours now.
Although my time is deplorable, I feel pleased today. I broke down a big wall, I think, and am no longer afraid of the rain.

P.S. Guess what came out after the race - the sun of course. It finally stopped raining right at the finish line!

The reason I thought of this list is because of your WISH shirts - not only was I DFL, but I set all new records for slowness (just me and the ambulance driver - lol). But DFL was better than DNS and I am glad I did.

Linda:tinker: :donald:

Wow!!! I's far behind.

The job and the new dog are consuming all my free time! the dog is doing ok. she was very passive and submissive when she came home, but actually that was just a side effect of the kennel cough and the surgery. she is actually quite lively!!!! She is a jumper and she and the boy are scrapping all of the time! I have to constantly watch both of them. I've started dvring the dog wisperer.

The job is so much fun. I'm getting a little more experience working on bikes, and i just got phil a tri bike frame really cheap b/c we had it sitting upstairs and had taken lots of parts off of it for other bike repairs.

traing is going great. still havent registered for the dis full!!

phil just got home. will have to catch up more later!

Now to try to catch up with everyone!!

Bill--Love those cakes!!! I want one for my birthday!! (I am such a kid at heart!!)

Stephanie--Glad you made it through the retail pharmacy weekend!! My sister is a pharmacist and she used to do retail, and she used to have some funny stories about the things people would ask her!! So, I can only imagine the Viagra phone call!!

Jackie--What a great week for you! Keep up the good work!

Kristi--Yikes! That story about the Cleveland marathon is crazy...I would be so mad if that happened to me!!

Krista and Steve--Glad you guys had fun at WDW!! I haven't even run the marathon yet, and I already think about what is at each mile, I can only imagine what it will be like walking through the parks after I have.

Angie--great job on your run the other day, and such an awesome pace, even with the back pain. Hope all is going well with the move!

Meghan--welcome to the boards!! As for a training program, you have to find what is best for you. Personally, I use the Hal Higdon program and I have really liked it so far!

Maria D.--Good for you for getting your workout in before work! I wish I was that motivated to do it in the morning!!!!

Renee--Too bad about DS's soccer tournament. It is great how kids get over things like that so quickly! There will always be more tournaments to play in, and as long as the kids get out there and have fun, that is all that matters!!

Judy--Happy belated birthday!! You are right, we have definetely had some great weather around here this week, although it is supposed to get VERY hot on friday!!

Carrie--Hope you figure out what the pain is from very soon, i can imagine that it can be very frustrating.

Shan--Hope you have fun on vacation! You are so lucky!!

Cecilia--WTG on your 10k and a great time!! I hope the kids games went well also!

Martha--I hope you guys have an AWESOME time on your trip!!

Cindy--Great job on your LR!! my shoes seem to be pretty good so far, although i have only run a few times with them.

Leana--snow...yikes!!! I don't want to see any snow for at least several months!!!!

Craig--great job on your 13k, but on a track! I think I would go crazy go around a track that many times!!!!!!

Dave--can't wait to read your report on the other thread...I think it is so cute that your DDs ran a 5k!!

Cam--great job on your workout!!

Kim-Great to hear from you, I was wondering what happened to you!!

Howard--Great to hear from you again, looks like your training is going well!

Andrew--I hope all is well with your Mom. :wizard:

I know I missed some people, but it is time to get ready to watch Idol!! I really hope Jordin wins!!

Linda - CONGRATULATIONS! I cried through your report - and am so proud of you for overcoming so many obstacles. I remember a 5K last fall in a cold rain that I was determined to run just to prove to myself that I could; like you, I hadn't trained in bad weather. My time was horrible, but I didn't care. You are so lucky to have such a great support group of family members.

Jen - I don't think you're dead weight, or if you are, we can be dead weight together!

Did 4 miles tonight at an even 48:00 - splits were 12:14, 10:35, 12:32, 12:36. WHAT was I doing on that 2nd mile? I did add some speed intervals, but I didn't think there were that many...

Gotta go run errands with DD. We leave for WDW in 2 weeks, and she and I are having mini-panic attacks already!

Jackie

Wow!!! I's far behind.

The job and the new dog are consuming all my free time!

traing is going great. still havent registered for the dis full!!
!

Hi Melissa!

So glad you checked in, we were just discussing how much we missed you here! We knew that new job was taking up a lot of your time, but I didn't know about the new dog too!

Linda, great job on the 5K and for overcoming your "road blocks"! You've got something that no one can take away from you- pride in doing something challenging and you didn't quit!

No training to report- ran out of time this morning. But I did want to say- it's SNOWING here! What! It's late May! That's just not right.

Okay, opinions needed. I have broached the subject with DH about Jan 1/2 marathon. Here's the deal- We're going in Feb 08 for sure for the builders show. (we go every year, this is the last year it's in Orlando) I told him I could just go down, or we could do a weekend of it, just him & I. So, no answer yet, and i don't want to push it, as the stress level is through the roof right now.

Here's the question: The 1/2 is at 90%. Should I register, on the premise that I may get to go and it's only $95 to secure a spot, or should I just wait & see?

Linda - fabulous job on your 5k! :cheer2:

Mel - thanks for checking in!

Stacey - sign up!

Anyone hear from Sunny lately?

Good Morning TEAM: :surfweb:

Linda- Wow, that was a great race report. Congratulations to you for having the COURAGE to start. That's what this team is all about. You really embodied the WISH team spirit. Thanks for posting.

Melissa- It's so great to hear from you again. Sounds like you have your hands full with your job and new dog. I haven't registered for the Full marathon either. I'm just hoping I can go. Take care!

Jen- I hope you're doing OK. Your post saying you're dealing with work and family stress makes it seem like you're going through a tough time now. Take care of yourself. Let your running be your time, and if you do a race every free weekend - so be it. You're entitled to some of your own time too.

Stacey- Snow? say it's not soooo. I think you should register for the 1/2. You don't want to get shut out, and it sounds like you are pretty sure you will run it. If you can't, you can have a guaranteed entry for 2009.

Hi Kristi- How are things going for you? Any training? Are you getting enough rest these days? Did you find a race to run? Any GGD concerts coming up? I saw they are playing outside Buffalo at the Darien Lake Theme Park this summer.

Sunny- Hope you're doing OK. The Vermont City Marathon is this weekend, right?

Hmmm, I should have known you'd call me on my lack of training! :rotfl:
I will look for a race today. I don't have much to keep me occupied here at work today, so I have no excuse!
ETA: Next race -
July 7 - 23rd Annual Bradford 5K Road Race, Bradford, N.H., 5K Cert., 9 a.m, Town Hall/Brown Shattuck Park, Loop course, mostly flat with one good sized hill., Trophies and plaques to top three in 9 age divisions. Bob Wright, (603) 938-5504

I do have two GGDs shows this summer - MA (general admission pit down front) & Mohegan Sun (row 4) in CT!
I was tempted to road trip to Darien Lake, but I really should be a little bit responsible. I also was tempted to take a trip out Carrie's way since Mom is going to Kalamazoo for training the same week as the Goo show there. Being a responsible adult stinks sometimes. ;)
Sorry you asked now, huh? ;)

Seriously, I wasn't trying to give you a hard time at all about your training Kristi. I just know you're online in the morning, and I wanted to give you a shout out. Looks like you found a race to train for. I need to figure out the next thing that I'm going to do. I think it might be the Utica Boilermaker 15K, July 8th in Utica, NY. It's a huge race, and our local Fleet Feet is sponsoring a roundtrip bus from Rochester to Utica to transport runners to the race.

Not sorry I asked at all. Have a great day.

I have been slacking a little this week with work commitments but will be back on track today.

Linda- Congrats for starting and finishing your race. You did awesome!

Andrew- Great idea about planning your own race for yourself. Yes trash talking would be weird.

Christa-Great idea about using a track with a playground near by. I will be on the lookout for one near me.

Howard- I too need to lose some weight. Sad to say but I need to lose at least 30 lbs. I am going to try to look at it in 5 pound increments.

Have a great day everyone.

Jen :goodvibes

Morning teammates. Nothing to report from me today. I started having some weird knee pain yesterday afternoon, so resting it today. It was really weird, my dsis and I were talking about her knee problems and then my knee started hurting so bad I could barely walk. Sympathy pains, I suppose!

Don't remember who asked yesterday, but my walking/ slow jog intervals were about 3 minutes, probably about a 1/4 mile--I did the wo on the TM so I don't know the exact distance

melR--so good to hear from you! Glad to hear that the job is working out--when I decide to actually buy a bike, I'll make the trek up to your store! Have fun with the puppy! And signup for the full!

Kristi--sounds like you have a busy summer! And I'm with Krista, what don't you like about SSR? We really like it, especially the new area (and that IS where hte party is gonna be;) )--But I have waitlisted for BC just to try to be closer to MGM

Jen(patsfan)--good luck witht he track run today

Dave--wow, chartering a bus to the Utica race, must be a big race. Hopefully, you can find a way to join us in Jan--I need all the help I can get to finish at that 4hr goal!

Linda--What a race report! Great job!:cheer2:

Stacey--go ahead and register!

Howard--good to hear from you! I got the opportunity to meet your wonderful wife in May at the Minnie--you are a lucky guy!:thumbsup2

Well, I should go--Cheech and Chong (aka my crazy kiddos) are fighting already! Have agreat Thursday all!

Linda - That is what WISH is about! :goodvibes Conrgatu.lations on your race!!!!!:cool1: I hope you are very proud of yourself! Think about how many people were still in bed when you were racing! Way to go!!!

Melissa - So good to see you!!! Glad you love your new job and DS has a new playmate. ;)

Sunny????

Kristi
- Did I mention that SSR is within walking distance to Ghiardelli? ;) BWV/BCV do have the best locations, bu I think SSR woould surprise you. :( Are you sure you have to be a resposible adult and not come my way?

Stephanie - Are you icing? Every now and then, I get some weird, somewhat severe knee pain. It doesn't last, though. Hope yours goes away quickly!

I decided last night aht I would do teh bridge run Saturday with a walk/run, as I did not hurt after Tuesday's run. Guess what? I hurt today. Grrrr..... Still want ot try a w/r tonight and see what happens if it doesn't get worse during the day.

Linda -- Congratulations!!! :woohoo: You should be soooo proud of yourself!! We are all so proud of you. Like someone else said, you embody the spirit of WISH! Really looking forward to hearing about your next event. Oh, and regardless of the color of that ribbon -- that is definitely "rod-worthy"!!! :thumbsup2

Stephanie -- Thank you, sweetie!

As for my training, yesterday should have been a rest day, but the next 4 days will be forced rest days due to no time and too many commitments, so I went to the Y just to get in 30 minutes on the TM. (Had to get home to see Jordin on AI, since everyone here says she is so much like my DD18 in appearance and sweetness! :lovestruc -- what a darling!)
So, anyway, here is the TM workout from last night:
3 minutes warmup at 4.2 (.21 miles); then intervals jog 3 at 4.8/walk 2 at 4.2 for 20 minutes; then all walking at 4.2mph (2.35 miles--12:46 pace)
Overall miles -- 2.56. Not many miles logged but just glad to get another day of something on the calendar.

I also did my 100 crunches & 100 push-ups yesterday morning and then forgot I'd done them and started the crunches again last night, got to 9 and realized it seemed all too familiar :rotfl: but decided what the heck and went to 25. So, 125 crunches; 100 push-ups; 33 minutes TM.

Now all the running back and forth to the courthouse and various meetings, parties, Bat Mitzvah and other commitments will be my cross training for the next 4 days. :sad1:

The most exciting thing is that our college friend who now lives in Sydney, AU is coming to visit!!! We are picking her up at the airport tomorrow and will loan her a car for the NE part of her trip and she'll be back to stay with us for a few days starting next Wednesday!!! We haven't seen her in about 8 years and I am happy beyond belief to see her. Last time she saw Jenn she was 10! And Andy was 4!! OMG!!!

I should report that I did do some trainign last night.

1. Inflated balance ball. ;)
2. Did ab/buttocks trainig non ball. Did not fall off!
3. Did stretches and exercises from PT.

Sadly, that took my whole night. Seeing as I have not been to Curves in ages, I am tempted to do balance ball work outs (include arms and legs) fro XT instead. I need to amke sure I will do them, though.

Krista - I've missed all the tatoo discussion, but i noticed that you said you havent done it. I actually went into a place to get a tatoo a few yrs ago and then after talking to them realized that there was nowhere i could put one that wouldn't bother me later!! Best wishes w/ that decision.

Dave - when is your marathon?

Stephanie - I work for Lewis and Clark outfitters (you know that one up there in the new mall) I think yours is open now. I'd love it if you come buy a bike from me, but if not, next time I'm in LR, I can meet you there and let you meet Kaleb. He is awesome and will run the bike dept in LR. He helped me when i was building up the PUSS (pink ugly single speed) - It is my favorite mt. bike!!! - You totally need a road bike though, b/c you have a need for speed (and you need it for the mean girls 1/2 IM) I think we are shooting for one of the last weekends in aug.

Colleen - hey!

I'm taking boy to school and then probably running 3 miles w/ the crazy dog. Hoping to wear her out!

Dave - when is your marathon?
Melissa- I've got nothing planned right now. I ran the Flying Pig 1/2 Marathon with Steve at the beginning of May, and we finished in 1:58.37 :cool1:. But I have no full marathon planned. I want to run the Disney Full again in January, but it's going to take some convincing of DW. I may end up doing a solo trip to run it. So I'm saving my 1 marathon/year for the Disney Full. If I don't do that, I may not end up running another full marathon until next year. Have a good run with the dog...

Sunny- Hope you're doing OK. The Vermont City Marathon is this weekend, right?

After completing 17 weeks of training, a family crisis has me derailed. I will not be doing the VT marathon this weekend.

Thanks so much for asking. I'll try to get back to WISHing when my head has cleared a bit.

Sunny
