Will the ABC TV fun ever start?

HOLLYWOOD, March 13 (Reuters) - The following story appeared on the cover of Daily Variety on Thursday:

* Think "The Bachelor" times two meets "Joe Millionaire," and you've got the idea behind producer Mike Fleiss' next reality show for ABC (nyse: DIS - news - people). The network has given the go-ahead for production on seven episodes of "Rich Guy, Poor Guy,"a one-hour unscripted series in which two single men will try to find love from a pool of women. The twist: One of the men will be filthy rich, the other dirt poor. Neither the women nor viewers will know who's the prince and who's the pauper.

Unfortunately, it has the potential to be a real ratings winner the way TV viewership is going these days.

From this morning's industry news:

"Viewers were as conspicuously absent as the hyphen in ABC's new reality series All American Girl Wednesday. The two-hour debut averaged a 5.0 rating and a 7 share, losing viewers in every half hour. It started out with a 5.9/9 in the 9:00-9:30 p.m. time period and wound up with a 4.4/7 between 10:30 and 11:00 p.m. The show is produced by Simon Fuller and Nigel Lythgoe, who created American Idol. "

By the way a "7 share" means that 7% of the people watching television were watching 'All American Girl'.

I am SO sick and tired of these romantic, and I use the term loosely, reality shows. What a message they are conveying to our youth about love and fidelity.....
Glad to see the ratings beginning to drop on the new shows. Let's lobby for a new genre at ABC--how about westerns !!!!!
