Thursdays: The Coastal Discovery Museum and the Heritage Library will be having guided tours of Historic Fort Mitchel. Visit a well preserved example of a Civil War Era coastal artillery battery. Learn about what life on Hilton Head Island was like for northern soldiers during the Union occupation 1861-1866. The tour covers the origin, construction, and operation of the works and describes something of the life of the garrison during the Union occupation of Hilton Head Island and surrounding islands of the Low Country throughout the War Between the States. October 2–3: 20th Annual Beaufort Shrimp Festival, celebrating local wild caught shrimp. The South Carolina Shrimper’s Association partners with Main Street Beaufort each year to bring awareness to thousands of visitors and residents. Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park, Historic Downtown. Free Admission into the Park! Restaurants compete for the coveted Silver Cup and bragging rights for best shrimp dish each year. Some festival goers take part in the Shrimp Heading Competition and some children touch their first shrimp in the Shrimp Peeling Competition. Sea Island Rotary organizes the rubber shrimp race each year and live entertainment, a children’s area, craft market, and 5K run round out this popular festival. Tuesdays: The Farmer’s Market at Sea Pines Center, presented by Lowcountry Produce, will open March 31 and run through Dec. 29. The Farmer’s Market at Sea Pines Center is a community event bringing farm fresh and LOCAL to residents and visitors on Hilton Head Island. lowcountryproduce.com.

Wednesdays: A Museum docent will be onboard as you cruise along the waters and salt marshes of Broad Creek. The Lowcountry’s Salt Marsh is home to many interesting creatures such as river otters, eastern oysters, blue crabs and a great species of birds. Among the most charismatic creatures found in the salt marsh are the bottle-nosed dolphins. Museum guides share their knowledge about this and many other of the fascinating creatures found in the salt marsh channels of Broad Creek. Cost is $19 adult; $13 child (ages 1-12). October 11: Enjoy a Lowcountry afternoon of polo, tailgating, divot stomping and fun for the whole family at the 22nd Polo for Charity event in Bluffton at the Rose Hill Equestrian Center on Sunday, October 11. Gates open at noon and the match starts at 2 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to get creative with their menu as well as their attire at this event, which refer to as Bluffton’s largest picnic. Tickets are $20 at the gate on the day of the match or $15 in advance. Children under 12 are admitted free.Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Okatie with event proceeds benefit local charities. October 14: The Coastal Discovery Museum will host Tom Murphy, a retired biologist with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, for a presentation at 3 p.m. Murphy, who was in charge of endangered species during his long career, will share his knowledge of the natural history of alligators in the Lowcountry. This presentation will cover the successes and difficulties in recovering and maintaining alligators as a part of South Carolina’s natural landscape. It will also cover key natural history characteristics and the unique traits that alligators have evolved over 180 million years of evolution. October 21: The Coastal Discovery Museum will host Lowcountry Dolphins on October 21 at 3 p.m. with Pete Schramm. This talk will give the audience new insights into this fascination creature. It is an excellent opportunity to acquire a broad knowledge and appreciation of the bottlenose dolphin. The talk includes an overview of dolphin anatomy, physiology, cognition, communication and social dynamics of these remarkable marine mammals. October 22: 4th Thursdays: Fire’em Up and Cruise In from 5-7 p.m. at the Shelter Cove Towne Centre. This classic car show takes place on Shelter Cove Lane waterside overlooking Broad Creek. October 23: The Choral Society presents the internationally-acclaimed men’s chorale, Chanticleer, 8 p.m., at Holy Family Catholic Church, 24 Pope Ave. The 12-man a cappella ensemble returns to Hilton Head in their second appearance to celebrate the Choral Society’s 40th Anniversary Season. Celebrated for their musicality, purity of tone and unique arrangements, Chanticleer fills the venue with music from a broad genre of vocal favorites in a style unparalleled in today’s performers. October 28 & 29: Dr. Vicky McMillan will present “Migrating Monarchs,” a 45-minute multimedia presentation on the Monarch butterfly migration from the northern parts of North America to Mexico and California. Biologist Vicky McMillan will take you on an exploration of the details of this intricate natural phenomenon. This lecture will include suggestions on how to plant Monarch butterfly waystation gardens to help migrating monarchs in their journey. The program is $7 per person, for an adult audience, 12 and older, and advance reservations may be made by calling (843) 689-6767 ext. 223.

October 30: Pumpkin painting isn’t the only fun at the 2015 Pumpkin Patch festival hosted by the Island Recreation Association. Bounce houses, carnival games, a petting zoo and the popular Halloween costume contest are all part of this annual festival in Shelter Cove Community Park. Kids will be awarded for having the best, most original, funniest and scariest costumes. The event is geared towards children ages 3 – 12 years, but everyone is welcome. Admission is $10 for children, ages 2-15 years.

October 30 – November 1: Known best for its white sandy beaches and, what seems like, its infinite number of golf courses, it’s something else that takes center stage on the tranquil barrier island Halloween weekend – world class automobiles.
