What's the big deal about red velvet cake?

As a person who likes to bake cakes, it is very interesting to read posters' perspectives.

I am known somewhat among friends and family for my fruitcakes. A lot of people don't want them as gifts. But the ones who do like them, like mine.

I tried a piece of fruitcake once with brandy, and they were delicious together.

I've only known about red velvet cake for a couple of months.

Regional differences are fun though. My wife.....who hates fruit cake....was horrified to discover after she married me that the traditional wedding cake in Canada is a fruit cake. My mom is from Canada and my wife got dragged to a lot of my cousins weddings up there, and of course it is RUDE not to have a bit of wedding cake.

I often wonder what type of towns you refer to?

That's because you weren't in the South, LOL.

A classmate of mine from HS took a job cooking on an offshore oil rig. One of the standard chores she did every single day was bake a dozen red velvet cakes; the men practically rioted if it wasn't available for dinner every single night. In the South it's very much a guy thing, and I've never met a male Southerner who didn't love it. Women tend not to be so manic about it.

The lady who made my wedding cake also made the infamous Armadillo Groom's Cake for the film production of Steel Magnolias. She said that they made over 60 of them for the shoot, and they ALL were eaten instantly as soon as each take was over; the crew couldn't get enough.

How did she make the grey icing? Was it a whipped icing or a cream cheese one?

Some are big and some are small. Only made it 5 of my cousin's weddings, in Ottawa, Saskatoon, Prince Albert, Calgary and Vancouver. Missed the other 10 weddings, but all had fruit cake as the wedding cake, my Aunts always made a point of sending us a piece for the weddings we missed.

Montreal bakeries seem to all offer wedding fruitcakes.

You don't have to quote my city to me, but thanks for the try.. ..I have been living here 45 years.. . Naturally any bakery will make you a fruitcake if that is what you want,you are paying, but it isn't the NORM for a wedding.. Perhaps in your family, since that is what you say, it is all family, that would make sense..

So it is seems more relevant in the UNITED KINGDOM, or if that is your heritage..
