Viva Las Vegas - A Vegas Mini-Trip Report - And Yet Another...

Hey S! Don't I get a name? :rolleyes1 You guys are hilarious! You should write a book. About what, I don't know, you'll think of something. I wish I could have gone!:rotfl2:

The pictures of the Hoover Dam remind me of a trip about 10 or more years ago. We went with a small group of people. We rented a van to carry us all. When we were just about to cross the dam, we stopped to quickly let several of the folks out(in a big line of traffic, no less) and the van door fell off. It was funny in a way but because of all of the traffic we really didn't see the humor until later. One of the guys grabbed onto it and held onto it until we could get across the dam and into a parking area to try to fix it. It really was from a reputable car rental place(Dollar, Hertz, or somewhere like that). We ended up getting it to stay on and taking it back to the rental place to get another one.

Your pictures are really great. I checked on a helicopter trip for our upcoming trip but they really ARE expensive. I guess we will just stick to the aerial views that we get flying in.

your photos over hoover dam are really great - i could never fly in a helicopter - too much potential for motion sickness!

Happy 4th Brewzoo! :3dglasses

Don't forget your fans!

I know it is a holiday weekend but we are waiting!

:goodvibes

He He ... sounds like a great trip. I am sure there is more to the story, or if there is not, you ought to make something up. :rotfl: How many people can say that they lost a door while driving over the Hoover Dam? Funny stuff.

I know! That's why we would have never done it if Dad hadn't gifted it to us. But let me tell you, it's worth every penny!!!!

The ride wasn't that bad actually. But, stay tuned, I am gonna tell you about the ride back to Vegas on the Heli.. There was a moment I thought I might need that little white bag.

Im in! I haev never been to Vegas, but my cousins and I are talking about going next year

You Gotta Go!!! You will love it!!! Welcome to the thread. It's gets better so keep reading.

I know it is a holiday weekend but we are waiting!
Ok, Ok, I am trying to get it going on. I will speed it up for you so that we can get all of the good stuff in before you go.
:)

Well, we had made it over the Hoover Dam and we flew over vast desert. Now we can see the cresting peeks with anticipation of the canyon that we were approaching. Really exciting.
0608LasVegas102.jpg

As soon as we flew directly over the western edge, we could see the Canyon fully. Amazing!

0608LasVegas105.jpg

In this photo you can see the Colorado River flowing through the Canyon. I can not believe people hike, climb, boat, donkey.. ... etc. through this.

0608LasVegas106.jpg

We landed in the bottom of the Canyon. Still we were on a cliff above the river, but we could walk up to the edge and see it. There was a canopy with picnic tables there next to the landing. We could see 2 or 3 other helis that had landed nearby. The one directly in front of us had a middle eastern man on it who wore a turban. I wish now I had taken a picture of him, because we joked that we had finally found Osama. (He looked just like him.)
0608LasVegas111.jpg

Once we where out of the heli, we walked to the edge of the cliff and took pictures while taking in the view. Breathtaking!!! I will post a few pics just to give perspective of how tiny we felt in that vast Canyon.

While we were sight seeing, Tony was setting up our picnic lunch. Oh, and I almost forgot.... My Dad decided to 'relieve' himself out there in the middle of everything. Ummmm.... embarrassing. What are ya gonna do?

Sorry no pic for that one.

We gathered back at the canopy. Which we have no picture of, but it was very Survivor looking. And by the way... HOT as a $#%$ #%#. I could literally feel my skin burning just standing there.

DSCN0763-1.jpg

While we were eating and drinking our Champaign, Tony answered some questions for us and chatted a bit. He was a wonderful waiter, never let any of our champaign glasses get low. However, we were so hot that we were chugging our bottled water more than the champaign. Regardless, VERY ROMANTIC!!!!

This thermometer was posted under the canopy. Obviously, to show how hot it is while you are in the middle of the desert at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. And mind you, this is probably a good 10 to 15 degrees cooler under the shade than in the direct sun.
0608LasVegas117.jpg

If you don't already know, I am quite terrified of birds. I don't know why, but I just hate them. And I will be damned if the only living animal (outside of a lizard) we get to see up close in the canyon would be a Raven. He was not afraid of us at all!!! It was very apparent that he knew how to get food from the heli tours that visited. I was not impressed! I just wanted him to fly away!!! (you can kinda see the shadow of the canopy in this pic of the raven)
0608LasVegas122.jpg

The picnic was great, aside from the scary raven. Each of us had our own wicker basket full of food. Very refreshing and very nice. We had sandwich wraps, pasta salad, a cookie, soft drinks, bottled water, champaign, and .... I forgot already.... Susan will have to fill this in... she might remember what else was in our basket. Once we were done eating, we all gathered in front of our heli to take a quick pic. Tony reminded us not to lean on the heli, as it would burn us.
0608LasVegas123.jpg

We reloaded the heli. This time, Susan and Chris sat up front and Wes and I in the back with Dad and Si. Our lift off was just as exciting as it was leaving Las Vegas. Hovering straight up over the river and in between the edges was quite intoxicating. The feeling of a million butterflies in your belly was revisited and the excitement just as intense.
0608LasVegas126.jpg

Chris sat in the middle of the front and got answers to the barrage of questions regarding each and every button, lever, switch and gage. Tony was quickly put in his 'happy place' as he started a mini flight lesson for Chris. You see, Tony is also a flight instructor too. Really?, Really?, Tony? Cuz.... we believe you! He shared with us how to pay attention to the feel of the heli as he rode the updrift of the Canyon while we flew directly next to the canyon wall. Tickle tummy time...
0608LasVegas127.jpg

0608LasVegas128.jpg

We flew threw the canyon wall for a while, then floated slightly above the top edge.
0608LasVegas131.jpg

Next...... we begin our journey back to Vegas. We get to see the Valley of Fire and Tony gets way to excited with his mini-lesson and does a few thrill ride heli tricks..... Stay tuned....

Fab pics, we did the same helicopter tour a few years ago. This has got me excited about our trip to Las Vegas next month. We are doing the helicopter tour again, but a longer one this time with a ride down the river and a trip to the glass bridge.

those photos of the grand canyon are truly gorgeous - and some of the terrain looks absolutely foreign....

yes, that "obama" turban picture would have been funny! (but not as funny as your father relieving himself - where was your camera then??!!!!) :rotfl:

A couple of additions:

The only thing she didn't mention in the lunch was the little cup of fruit (mostly melon), which Jo hates, so she gave me hers. No wonder she doesn't remember.

Dad was gonna pee and whipped it out, then realized people from the other two helis were about 100 feet away and mumbled something like "Well, I guess I shouldn't do that right there". Then he just stood in place (as I recall) and rotated about 90 degrees and did it anyway! I guess he thought they couldn't see his unmentionables if he wasn't facing right toward them. :confused3

When we took off and were climbing out of the canyon, Tony Ferrari (I say that with my best Brooklyn/Italian accent) showed us how he was conserving gas by riding the wind shear up the side of the canyon. OK, I was fine just thinking he had full control of the heli, even though I wasn't sure why we were riding what looked like only about 15 feet from the side of the canyon wall. The whole time I was wondering how on earth the rotors weren't hitting the wall. I had those same visions from a James Bond movie of one of the rotors tapping the inside of the canyon wall, catapulting us into a vicious diagonal spin downward into the Colorado River.

But Tony Ferrari (I love saying that) explained that staying as close to the edge of the canyon as possible allowed us to ride the wind shear. This was as big a thrill as any roller coaster I have ever ridden. It felt like I could climb out and spread my "wings" and ride that wind shear all alone.

When we got to the canyon's rim, there was a small, brief dip, then a "whoosh" (best I can describe it) straight up and out of the canyon. Then we started back to flying forward, parallel to the ground below.

On the way in, we did catch a glimpse of the Skywalk I think one of you mentioned above. I think they just finished this within the past year. From our perspective in the heli, it looked like it was about 2 inches long and nothing to be impressed by, but Tony Ferrari ;) showed us something else (I don't remember what), which gave us perspective on this bridge that I think juts out over the canyon 100 feet or more.

He also showed us the part of the canyon where Robbie Kneivel jumped a few years back. That was incredible to even think of. He is either very brave or has lost his frickin' mind!

You two ladies definitely have the gift for writing. I may send this link to my team teacher. She teaches writing and is always talking to her kids about putting voice into their writing. Yours has lots of voice. I can hear you saying it almost--- and the pictures make me feel as if I was experiencing it with you. Keep it up---you guys are great and it sounds like an awesome, once in a lifetime experience.

Ok, so Susan helped me out with some of the stuff I forgot or omitted. Thanks. Tony shared with us that part of the reason the tours are so expensive is that the Hualapai Indian tribe gets about half of the money since it is their territory we are flying in and through.

Yeah, as we were headed back, there was a very different feel riding in the heli. I think mostly because Tony had found his comfort zone with us and could tell that he didn't need to be quite so 'reserved' and have some fun with us. Chris was very intrigued with the mini flight lessons. Tony spent a lot of time telling us and showing us what each peddle and lever did. The experience was fun as we would sour up, dip down, and hover from side to side. It was very similar to a simulator or a video game, but here we were actually in the heli and doing crazy tricks in the air above the desert. :scared1:
0608LasVegas134.jpg

0608LasVegas133.jpg

This is called the Narrows.
0608LasVegas137.jpg

It was about at this point that Toni shared his worst tour experience. (upon our request) He said that he was piloting the tour to a group of Middle Eastern tourist. He mentioned that they entered the heli to begin with with a very distinct aroma of ..... well... let's just say.... less than fresh. You have to imagine this...... the helicopter is very small and you sit touching each other elbow to elbow, thigh to thigh, butt cheek to butt cheek... get the picture?
Long story shortened.... he said that apparently one of the gentlemen must have had an accident during the picnic. You know, like the smelly #2 kind. :scared: And there is NO restroom, clean up areas, etc. at the picnic area. So, they all had to ride the return tip in the heli with the man and his shadooby filled pants back to vegas. OMG!!!! talk about feeling trapped! You can't even crack a window in a heli...

Here you can see that we are just starting to see las vegas
0608LasVegas141.jpg

as we got closer we were able to get a real bird's eye view of the strip
starting with the Fremont side. Notice the tunnel. Cool from above.
0608LasVegas149.jpg

Then we came upon the big strip.

Wow!!! finally!!! We have finished out heli tour. We had a blast and it will be a long time before we will forget the entire experience. I am so glad I have my family to share the memories with. I have also made a video and put it on you tube with music and some short video clips to help capture the memories. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oMPDpc9Amb8

Next.... dinner after the heli tour, strolling the strip, and prepping for Friday!!!

Looks like you had a great time! Haven't been to Vegas, but I did get to the Grand Canyon once - but since I was by myself, I only hiked down for about an hour, then back up. It was still incredibly spectacular!

The pics of the canyon are breath taking!

Thanks for sharing!

Beautiful pics from the Grand Canyon!!! What fun!!!

I can't imagine heli tricks!!!
Thanks! We loved the feeling. The pictures truly don't do it justice.

That sounds like lots of fun. Is it the Skywalk?

I am the same way! I absolutely hate birds--everyone thinks im crazy!
I am not saying you're crazy, but my sister is certifiable. :rotfl:

I know, we really didn't have the camera in the right place at the right time. Wait 'til you hear more stories about Dad. He's a riot!

Thanks for the compliments. I don't know about writing, but I'm a stickler for grammar, punctuation and spelling. It comes in handy for my career.

Hiking sounds like it would be fun. Maybe we'll go back someday with more time.

oops i posted twice....
Rookie!

The pics of the canyon are breath taking!

Thanks for sharing!
Again, nothing compares to the real experience!

Ok I'll start filling in the rest of Thursday for you. Unfortunately, we don't have any pictures, but I'll try to get creative.

The limo dropped us back off at Caesar's Palace. This time, we were the first and only stop. We were all on some sort of Cloud 9:cloud9: just floating after our experience. We were almost speechless. The driver must not have known about the super secret VIP entrance to the Augustus Tower, since he dropped us off front and center. Maybe he just wanted everyone to see us - the pseudo-celebrities just returning from our exclusive helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon. We all got to use the pageant waves we had practiced so well as we exited the limo. I think Wes got the tip that time (we rotated).

So we paraded through the casino, the hotel lobby, and over the August Tower and back up to our room. I imagine everyone was looking at our glowing faces wondering just what we had experienced that was so special. Or maybe they could see that cloud we were riding. :confused3

We got back to Dad's room and I think we sat around for a bit. Maybe had another drink from the stash that Andy Dick/Woody Allen had brought us earlier. We talked about how NOT to touch anything in the mini-bar, including the sex kit (I think it was an Evening of Pleasure, to be exact), or that crazy lady we met in December would be at our door faster than you could say "stop theif" "to check the mini bar". To which the response was Dad and Sierra immediately picking up the sex kit (that's what I call it) and opening it to explore the contents. We wanted to tell them to get a room, but somehow that didn't make sense as we were all standing there enjoying our cocktails. So Chris, Wes, Jo and I simply sidestepped right over to the window with our cocktails, whistling a nice tune and observing the Bellagio's fountain show, pretending we didn't see the sexploration going on in the other corner of the room. (In all seriousness, it was benign childsplay, well adultsplay, but nobody was exposing any body parts or anything at this time. All in good fun.)

Also while we were in the room, Dad called to see if we could get a reservation at Mesa Grill, Bobby Flay's place in Caesar's for the night. Well, they had nothing for Thursday, but they did have an opening for Friday. So we took that. Jackpot!!! Dad had tried to make reservations 2 months earlier and couldn't get into Mesa during our trip. Something to look forward to.

I then talked for about 30 minutes about changing into my dress. This is the dress that I had bought to wear on the cruise last year and never worn. I was bound and determined to wear that freakin' dress on this trip. Everyone else wanted to go casual. Well, at some point, I decided against the dress and I can't remember if I wore jeans or what, but it wasn't the dress. Joann, Sierra and I rinsed our faces and freshened up our make-up. I remember Sierra making the comment "Susie, you and Jodie used to spend hours playing in my make-up. Now it's my turn. Let me see all your goodies!" So we had a little fun at the make-up mirror.

When we were all finished, we went down to Augustus Cafe

augustus_cafe3_300x225.jpg

to have dinner. With Dad, we got to enter the Seven Star line and be escorted right to our big round table.

Now, there's good news and bad news.

The good news: We took food porn pictures for much of the entire trip.
The bad news: All the food porn is on Sierra's camera in Jackson Tennessee and she has no clue how to download it, much less get it to photobucket.

So you will have to wait and see if we can somehow, someday, get ahold of our food porn.

At Augustus, I think I had like a hamburger or something. Sierra got the fish n chips and I said I wanted a bite, but then was too full to take a bite by the time she and I were both ready. I don't remember what everyone else got. This was a nice casual dining place right near the hotel lobby. We've had breakfast there before.

After Augustus Cafe, we walked around the casino floor. We wanted to see the Pussycat Dolls blackjack table area, but the girls weren't there. I stopped and asked at the counter where a girl was selling PCD merchandise and she said they would be out at 9pm on Friday and from noon until whenever on Saturday. We will come back for that.

So Dad wanted Sierra to see Shadow Lounge and we continued around the corner to Shadow.

ShadowABaratCaesarsPalace_300x225.jpg

I think now it was around 7pm and we asked the hostess when the girls would start dancing, to which she replied "any minute now". We found ourselves a table and it wasn't long before we saw two of these:
Nightlife_Silhouette_120x90.jpg

Dad loves this place because the first time we were in Vegas together, I took him there. He thought they were videos. They are not. They are girls behind screens wearing nothing but thongs. It is quite provocative.
Here's a virtual tour, if you want to see more. It is safe for work ;)

Next: The rest of the evening - what do the cards hold for us?
