Unofficial guide from the library...

Question, I checked out the unofficial guide from the library (current edition) can I use that to subscribe to the website at the discounted rate or is that wrong? I couldn't find any info online about it, and all it asks for on the website is words from pages. I don't want to cheat them... But at the same time, I don't want to pay full price

What do you think?

-- I hope this doesn't start some heated debate, that is NOT my intention what-so-ever.

Personally, I think it's wrong. If you want the service, pay the money -- it's not a lot, especially when compared to the expense of even of bargain Disney vacation.

And if you don't want to pay the money, don't use the service. I don't even think it's something that an ethical person can reasonably debate.

O lordy, put your flamesuit on. The saints will be slinging fire & brimstones soon.

My take...you legally borrowed the book from your public library, right? And you're a taxpayer, so technically you're the public that owns the book. So go ahead, use the information in the book. You will be paying for the service. You're not stealing anything.

I think they did away with the free subscription if you buy the book.

There is a discount though.

With the money you just spent for your disney vacation what is a few dollars more? 10.95 to subscribe

Wait its not even $11 to subscribe? Now I feel like a complete idiot, I swear I read that it was $50+.

Subscribing at full price now :thumbsup2

Thanks for the help!

Thats how I thought about it as well, but I wanted some more opinions... The little voice in my head was bothering me  and we all know the crazy looks you get when trying to discuss these oh so important things with non-disers ;)

The little voice in your head is wise!

Mine? Not so much. I have to tune it out. ;)

I work in a library and have been for 11 years. I think it is wrong. The publishers charge libraries 2x to 3x more for an item than they do for an individual. They do that because they loose money for the very reason that you are asking. We in the library do not think it is fair that these publishers do that, but I can see why when people are willing to get something free; especially when they get it cheaper than libraries.

You are public and it is in the public library, but the same is true with any public building. You can not just go in and take things because you are a tax payer.

I am not trying to flame you. I am just stating the reason why you should not, but you are an individual that will have to make your own decisions and live with that decision. There is nothing that anyone can say - it is all about you and your personal decisions.

As PP said, it doesn't matter if it is wrong or not: subscription no longer comes with the book.

But, for sake of argument: if they offer it again, I say you can ethically use the website while you are borrowing the book, but not after returning the book.

When the library buys the book, they are also buying the subscription that (used to) come with it. When you are borrowing the book, you borrow the rights to the entire book (including the subscription).

If you could not borrow the subscription, then no one would ever be able to use it, despite the library paying for it (as the price for the subscription is included in the price of the book). The library would thus be cheated.

Interestingly, there seems to be more ethics police on message boards than in real life. :confused3

OP, hope you get the info you need and have a magical trip. pixiedust:

I think in real life people just keep their mouth shut, but they're thinking the same things as we've seen on message boards.

On message boards, people feel safe to speak their mind.

Perhaps, if people spoke their minds concerning ethics in real life, and called people out for being unethical, the world would be a better place.

Just think how little gov't corruption, or corporate embezzlement, or fraud, etc., there would be if no one was willing to turn a blind eye, or be bought off.

I believe there is a pschological theory concerning this: that social pressure to behave ethically helps people resist temptation to be unethical, while when people see unethical acts peformed without consequence, people's resistance to temptation is eroded.

Wow! That's not condescending at all now, is it? OP asked for opinions on this, and I politely gave her mine and began with the word "Personally" to show these were my feelings.

I'm not sure what your issue is but this was a pretty polite conversation until you came along calling people "ethics police."

The OP asked a question. (One to which the little voice in their head already knew the answer...)

This is the DIS. :cool1:

Did you really expect everyone to agree on an answer? :lmao:

to the OP:

Since you asked for opinions, here's mine: The book isn't yours. You didn't actually pay for it. You shouldn't use it to get the discount.

I had no idea! Quite a few children's books in our library seem to be donated. That makes a lot of sense now. I was considering donating my copy of the 2011 Guide once I'm done with it (in December). Is that acceptable or do libraries HAVE to purchase at the higher price from the publishers?

Wow your library is getting ripped off. My library has so much to spend on books each year - librarian makes a list of wanted books ...she calls them in and they give her a major discount and she then makes another list of books to get.
I say use the discount I don't see the library getting the subsription...
If I got off my butt I would be at the library on Monday morning to get all the coupons from the Sunday paper that they throw away too.

Moot point..Subscription now costs you, with or without the book there is a charge for it now

There's a link in the Allears.net newsletter for 30% off a subscription, which brings it down to like 6 or 7 bucks.

Head on over and sign up! You'll get a great weekly newsletter and you'll be saving your eternal soul at the same time. Whatta bargain! :thumbsup2

I just used the discount code last night with the 30% off it is only $7.67 to subscribe for a year

Wow! It looks like there are a few librarians and aides on this board. Just shows we're really "Media Specialists" ~ love to do research! (Though I consider myself a teacher-librarian, but that's a discussion for another day...) I would have no problem with my patron using a code from a book. It is not impacting the integrity of the book or the website. How odd that y'all pay 2X and 3X more for books... I pay more for library binding, but that doesn't have anything to do with subscriptions that's more with making a physically stronger book. Maybe it's different because I'm an elementary librarian? Have a great day!
