One Dope, One Goof and a Mickey Marathoner Take on 114.1* **: A WDW Marathon Weekend PTR (UD 12/16)

I love your recap of the races. I have been getting really nervous about running the marathon but you give me hope that it can be fun!

I'm going to do an actual, in-depth recounting of the Marathon ... (spoiler alert: Week 6!) but it was easily my favorite race of all the RD races I've run.

WHO SAYS THAT ABOUT A MARATHON?!?!?!

So, I'm going back and re-reading...

1. Love that you used #BlessedBall - one of my very favorite hashtags ever
2. Can't believe I haven't said this yet, but it is SO awesome of you to volunteer during W&D - seriously, thank you for doing that. I'll be interested to hear your thoughts!
3. Bizarre-o weather for 2016 Dopey weekend!! Yikes!
4. You're "I'm A Marathoner!" picture is a little hilarious because you look so happy in it, and the lady behind you in the Minnie skirt is just DONE. We've all been there before. ::yes::
5. Loved your Dopey recap even though I'd already read it. :lovestruc Can't wait to do it again!!

1. There's nothing else it could be other than a #BlessedBall!
2. I'm REALLY looking forward to volunteering at W&D! I'm also volunteering at Marathon Weekend, but in a completely different capacity and I'm SUPER excited about that.
3. FOR. REAL. Everything (except ice/snow) that could happen, did.
4. RIGHT? I felt like the poor gal behind me - I remember she was BAWLING when I saw her again at the Dopey tent. That's what I thought I was going to be like! But I had other things in mind ... like a beer. #Hydration
5. I'M SO EXCITED FOR DOPEY V2.0!!!!! (Who says that??)

I loved reading about your 2016 Marathon Weekend experiences!

Thanks! I know that other race weekends will likely never compare, because it was JUST ONE OF THOSE kinda weekends, where everything was ... just perfect? Even when it wasn't.

Tower to Keels, You Are Now Cleared For Take-Off!
(AKA We Have A Training Plan!!!!!!!)

This bad boy is going to be one of a couple of updates today!

First off - I was cleared to resume training on Monday, Oct. 24th! I'm over the moon excited for this. Obviously, my PT and doctor were not thrilled when I told them my training was going to be for Dopey and would prefer something a little less ... strenuous. But I AM registered for a 10K on Thanksgiving Day, so that seemed like an easier "immediate goal" for them to digest.

Since I've been down for a while, and I suffered injuries in different places, of different types, on both sides of my body, I'm opting to go into this truncated Dopey Training Cycle with a radical plan that largely focuses on the Marathon.

Now, this isn't much of a change from what my initial plan was going to be for Dopey pre-injury - I was planning to ease back after the Chicago Marathon and then use Higdon's Novice I to ramp mileage back up prior to Dopey.

Well, that dream died a while ago.

So, as of today, it's 78 days until the Marathon - which gives me roughly 10 "training" weeks to get up to a decent enough mileage where I feel like I can complete the challenge.

I'm currently in Florida until the second week of November, at my parent's house, which affords me ample opportunity to train in a little different way - I'm going to ramp up my aerobic endurance using a triathlon training model, versus a traditional running model.

For the first four weeks, everything except the weekly "long run" will be for time, not distance. For instance - Mondays will be 30 minutes swim, 45 minutes bike. Tuesdays will be 30 minutes swim, 45 minutes bike. Wednesdays will start at a 30-minute run. Thursdays push to 45 minutes swim, 60 minutes bike. Fridays will be the long run. Saturdays will be rest.

The swim and bike portions will hopefully line up with a minimum of .5 miles swimming and 6.2 miles. Based off what my specialist offered up was aerobic session of those distances done at (for a lack of better term) aggressive or "race pace") can be equivalent to 1.5 miles of running. #MATH

Oh. Yeah. There's only two days of actually running in there right now. "KEELS! How can you train for a marathon and not run?" Well ... I'm banking on the fact that what I'm referring to as "circuit workouts" - what I'm doing with swimming and biking - will help me get back to the aerobic fitness level I need to be at to be successful for the miles I'm hoping to reach. In the first two long runs, if I feel that I'm not where I need to be pace wise, I have options to either double up the "circuit workouts" (ie. Mondays will be two circuits of 30 swim, 45 bike) or I'll add in a third running component somewhere (30 swim, 45 bike, 30 run) for an ultimate push into "failure" while spreading allowing my ankles, knees and hips even breaks from the stress of training.

Also, as mandated by my doctor, every fourth week will feature a DRAMATIC step-back in mileage for the long run. So, long runs will go like this:
Week 1: 4 miles
Week 2: 6 miles
Week 3: 8 miles
Week 4: 4 miles
Week 5: 10 miles
Week 6: 12 miles
Week 7: 14 miles
Week 8: 6 miles
Week 9: 16 miles
Week 10: 18 miles
Week 11: Dopey Challenge!

"Hey, Keels! I noticed something ..."

You're right. I have zero taper in there. That was in the plan long before this current plan was formulated. For me, I think the Magic Number is 18 miles. If I can get to 18 miles without any nagging pain or setback, then I'm good to go and won't have to alter up my Dopey plans.

For 2016 Dopey, I focused EXTREMELY on back-to-back mileage and near marathon-length longs runs, coupled with sim weekends (I did two ... ugh). And ... I felt overtrained, and halfway through the Marathon I was definitely on dead legs (and then I popped a tendon in my big toe). So, this time around, I'm choosing to go into it undertrained in mileage but at the required equivalent in aerobic fitness.

I'll be posting week-by-week breakdowns and check-ins every week. But for now, here goes nothing!

Interesting training plan! It makes sense that something with less weight-bearing activities would be beneficial. :thumbsup2

Almost Day 1! Good luck!!

I have no particular expertise, but I love your plan! I switch to tri training over the summer to get ready for an annual sprint triathlon I do in August each year, and it's so fun!! I'd continue it through the year if logistics weren't so difficult. Looking forward to more updates - good luck!

Yeah - I'm hopefully optimistic that this will be able to get me up to speed and help distract the rate at which I'm trying to ramp up mileage ... we'll see how it goes when I start tacking on longer runs. First "long run" is this Friday!

Training Day: 1

OK, so I promise I won't do this for EVERY training day - but I WILL update with my progress on a week-to-week basis as I go.

Today was Day 1 of my return to training ... the plan was 30 minutes of swimming and 45 minutes of biking. I was hoping to hit at least eight miles on the bike, but I fell short:

IMG_4319.PNG

So, I'll try again tomorrow and hope for between 8-10 miles in the same 45-minute span. In fairness, it's been since July since I've ridden my bike (back when the hip pain initially started) - and also, I'm a little spoiled by cycling in Fort Worth ... our little Texas town is one of the bike-friendliest cities in the U.S. The part of Orlando where my parents live? Not so much. So, it was a slight learning curve having to navigate sidewalks on really busy areas (HELL NO, I'm not riding on the street where clueless tourists are driving ... sorry tourists!). But, I hit my stride in the back neighborhoods by the chain of lakes - so I'll definitely branch out to do more of that tomorrow.

Also on the slate tomorrow ... a trip to Disney Springs to see if I can locate these mythic bike racks. Apparently, there are bike racks located (at minimum) the bus loop, but possibly at other locations throughout Disney Springs. Why do I care about bike racks at Disney Springs, do you ask? Well - easy ... Disney Springs is EXACTLY five miles from my parents' house here in Orlando! I would love to break up a ride with a wander around DS, maybe lunch or happy hour, and then a five-mile ride home. This is one Disney experience I can definitely get my husband on-board with too, so hopefully I can find these bike racks.

Here's how the rest of the week is shaping up training-wise:
Monday: 30 swim, 45 bike
Tuesday: 30 swim, 45 bike
Wednesday: 30 swim, 30 run
Thursday: 30 swim, 60 bike
Friday: 4 miles
Saturday: 30 swim, 30 bike
Sunday: Rest

We'll see how I feel after the first run session on Wednesday. As the key is really the "long run", if I feel I need to take Thursday off from alternative training for extra rest before the four miles, I'll add in a second rest day there and then adjust appropriately going forward.

Stopped at the boat ramp at the lake in our neighborhood to survey fishing conditions. Not bad weather for some riding!

The bike I brought with me to Florida is my hybrid bike - it's a Giant Liv Alight 2 (from the women's line by Giant). It's an aluminum frame, so it's incredibly light and nimble. It has an upright/flat-bar handle bar which ... isn't my favorite and I'll probably swap it out for something different or throw on some aero bars when my rides get longer. I do have an upgraded Shimano drive-train from the standard but have the basic Tektro brakes, and a Brooks saddle. Pedals are stock pedals - which, again, are fine for what I do. This is the bike I generally ride for longer rides at home that don't require me to carry things (like in a basket) - an always when I'm riding in the street with vehicular traffic. This was my first "big girl" bike - I got it for Valentine's last year - and I love it. For anyone looking to jump in to cycling, or getting a bike that's a great entry-level bike that has many options for customizing based on what you may want (more speed, commuting, etc.), personally, I don't think you can go wrong with any bike from the Giant line.

Congrats on your first day back!

And ha - I would never ride my bike on the road near my parents' home in Florida either! I'm also very much in love with my bike - Trek Lexa - so light and zippy!

LOVE the Lexa's! I actually rode one when I was first looking at bikes and went with a hybrid instead, because I was new to biking and was SO intimidated by road bikes.

I have an Electra Townie 7D step-through cruiser, too, so my next bike is MOST DEFINITELY going to be a road bike. And there WILL be a next bike ... my husband has four bikes (and keeps wanting more), so I know a third bike will be an easy sell for him.

Not gonna lie, I haven't biked in forever...so you began the bike talk and my eyes glazed over a bit. :p

But HOORAY for a great day 1 of training! Off to a great start! I am so jealous of your "take a break at Disney Springs" plan!!

Following along because I loved 2016 so much (even some of the training) and I'm so jealous of everyone doing 2017. Contemplated heading out just me and my mother but gonna save myself for 2018 and do it again with the gang!

Interested to see how your training goes. My boyfriend wants to do dopey but gets bored just running and is toying with the idea of adding cycling as well.

How did I miss that you were doing a PTR?? Following along! So happy you are back to training! It's getting closer! :)

I'm going to do an all-encompassing update later tonight, but best I can tell ... the cycling is going GREAT! I'm doing my first real "long" run this weekend ... at least long compared to what I've be doing recently, so we'll see how everything shakes out!

Ha! I can be sneaky when I want to! :D

I actually just did early check-in for our hotel/villa reservations today ... I can't believe we're so close! Hope your training is going well!!!

Seven Weeks (50 Days) To Go:

I know, I know, I know - you've all been thinking "Yup, NOW this feels like a normal PTR by Keels!" Well, guess what ... I'm back with an update!

By The Numbers:
0:
Days Until FP+ Day
50: Days Until the WDW Marathon Expo
54: Days Until the WDW Marathon
114.1: Total Miles run by the four of us over the course of four days

#SquadGoals:
What's everyone up to this week?

ME: I'm back in Texas after a three-week stint in Florida, and I'm just plugging along with my training while enjoying this beautiful Texas weather. My alternative plan seems to be working out, for the most part. I'm about a minute off pace-wise where I'd like to be, but that's OK. I'm allowing myself not to worry about pace at this point and just keep building up aerobic endurance and making sure I can get my long runs in. Ideally, I'd be back around a 12:00/mile (that's what I was training at back when I was training for Chicago), but I'm hovering right around 13:00/mile. I'm also taking it PRETTY easy, because I just want to get runs done and avoid the injury bug that seems to be JUST HANGING AROUND ME all this year. I'm also doing more active recovery after my runs, more stretching and resistance work than I'd done previously. And I've added in 30 minutes of core strength workouts daily - I use an app called SWORKIT for on-demand workouts on my iPhone that I can mirror to a TV via Chromecast - and so far, I can tell they may be helping? :confused3 The real big difference for me is I'm ONLY focusing on mileage for my weekly long run. Everything else (including bike rides) are 100-percent time based. For example, today was 35 minutes running followed by 90 minutes biking. NO EXCEPTIONS. Tomorrow will move up to 45 minutes running, 120 minutes biking, Wednesday will be 60 minutes of running, Thursday will be 90 minutes of biking, Friday will be back to 35 running, 90 biking, and Saturday will be this week's "long run" - which is only four miles since it's a step-back week. And on Sunday? On Sunday, we rest because Sunday FunDay. If by my 12-mile week I feel like my long runs are struggling, I'll scrap this plan and pick up the Higdon Dopey plan from that point to the 18-mile week (which should still be the week BEFORE Dopey as I'm planning on no taper). While I'd ideally love to be faster, I'm more focused on setting myself up for long-term success. So, if that means I'm doing Dopey at a consistent 12:00-13:00/mile, so be it. I'm cautiously optimistic that I'll be corralled in H for the Half/Full this time (or, at worst, I), which is a big jump from where I was for my first Dopey (L), thanks to a pretty stellar 10-miler I had towards the end of last year during my Dopey training. Plus, the goal of Dopey THIS time around is "HAVE ALL THE FUN. ALL OF IT." So, things are looking great! Remember what I said about that injury bug, though ... keep reading and you'll understand.

M: Has been running with a local running group that is training for our local marathon in February (same weekend as Princess), so she's been attempting to do her long runs with them, but usually hits some frustration point. This past Saturday, she was slated to run 16 miles with the training group. The coach has instructed her to run at more of 11-12:00/pace during her training runs ... and she's been trying to do that, but it's been really frustrating to her. This week, by around Mile Six, she'd had enough and broke away from the pack to finish on her own. Around Mile 12, she was feeling a little soreness in her knee/IT area - but a quick stop for a 30-45 second stretch, and she was back to feeling good. 16 miles completed, in a 10:27 pace. Her longest run yet! She's going to be a Marathoner in NO TIME! Speaking of Marathoners ...

B: So, shortly after finishing the Chicago Marathon, I got to meet up with B and her husband at WDW for some F&W Couple fun! It was great to see her as we hadn't had a chance to see each other since September (the weekend BEFORE Disneyland Half). After returning from Disney, B was set to head to Barcelona for a week-long work trip. Unfortunately, she caught my "stumble bug" and ended up tripping and falling on a mountain run the day before she was set to leave Barcelona. The results? A pretty gross gashed-up knee. But because B #NeverEverQuits, she still ran a 10-miler this past weekend ... and PR'd. Because, really? She's such a show-off. Her husband even finished top-3 in his age group! She's taking a little time off before the St. Jude Half Marathon in December, which will feature a PR effort. And then it's time for Goofy! So, if you thought B's fall and knee bust-up was bad, well, here's the worst update I have to post ...

S: So, if you had been paying attention to the "By The Numbers" up top - you're either thinking "Wow, Keels TOTALLY hates math" or you got the feeling that something was wrong. Well, here it is: S is officially out for her pursuit of Dopey. Non-displaced heel fracture. Walking boot for 6-8 weeks. She's currently trying to keep up with her fitness via spin to make the Disney portion of the trip even happen, but it's not looking real great at this point. Cue sad trombone.

My Favorite Things
(One in an occasional series of my favorite things about WDW Marathon Weekend!)

7. The Walt Disney World 10K Course
Screen Shot 2016-11-14 at 6.56.29 PM.png

Dopey 2016 was my first time to run any of the "traditional" WDW courses - and I use "traditional" since Marathon Weekend and Princess Weekend share the same course layouts for all three courses, and now the new W&D 10K uses a very similar 10K course. So, lotta crossover on these courses.

Anyway. The Friday of Dopey was my first chance to experience the 10K course - and while I mentioned above how much I LOVED it (despite the pouring rain and slippery conditions), I thought I might go into it a little bit more on the "why" I loved this race.

Personally, I think my racing "sweet spot" is the 10K distance. I take a while to get mentally "in to" a run and a race - I mean, it can range anywhere from a mile to three miles before I fall into a groove and get in the right mindset. So, in a 10K, even if it takes me three miles to get in a groove, it's a mental obstacle passed where I can tell myself "OK - feeling good. Let's kickass for the second half and get to the end." ... and in most cases recently, it's worked!

Also, I like the openness of the first three miles of the 10K course, along with how "naturally" the mile markers occur.

Let's take a look at the map above, shall we?

The first mile is straight out and through the parking toll booths at Epcot (Watch Your Speed, runners!!), before taking a sharp hairpin turn and up the overpass on Epcot Center Drive. Again, this is still a pretty wide stretch of real estate to get into a groove, with VERY little camber to worry about depending on where you run along the road. Mile Marker 2 comes up on you pretty quickly, and if you're a runner like me, you like to know where you stand amongst the field - this is a GREAT point to see where you stand. You'll likely still be able to see later corrals heading through the Toll Booths.

For Dopey, I started in Corral E (of F) for the 10K. For Princess, I was in D - so, pretty much the same situation. In both races, passing the Toll Booths from above was the "benchmark" I needed to mentally settle in to the race and focus on getting to the finish line.

If there is a mile that sucks of the 10K, it's the Mile heading in to Mile Marker 3. It's more highway ... but the payoff happens.

You cross the 5K mat through a Cast Member entrance backstage of Epcot, and you run straight towards the backstage loop of Test Track (on nice weather days, the cars are running and you can hear the "WOOSH!" sound as they race by), and then you bust into a beautiful illuminated World Showcase right next to Norway. And who doesn't like running through the World Showcase when it's all lit up, right? Exactly!

But then here comes my FAVORITE MILE of any WDW race I've ever done. That's right - I said it! Favorite. WDW. Mile.

I love Mile 4 of the WDW 10K that covers the bulk of the Epcot Resort area. Why? Here goes. I don't think I've been very shy about reasons why I prefer DL races to those at WDW - I really love the "local race" aspect of Disneyland Races, and that is in large part to the sheer number of citizens that post-up in their neighborhoods and along the streets of Anaheim. For me, as a runner, I'm really fueled by spectators and their vocal support - I know it's going to be blasphemy for me to say it as a card-carrying #DisneyRunner, but I would trade the character stops for throngs of cheering fans and fun signs in a heartbeat ... it's just what I love to see on a run!

And the awesome part of the WDW 10K is that the location affords an easy and accessible place for spectators, at a particularly crucial mileage-point during the race.

So, in this case, in the pouring rain, the Boardwalk through by the Swolphin and then down past Yacht & Beach was just LINED with people cheering, clanking cowbells, high-fiving, you name it. And - at that moment - I thought that if they could wake up early and STAND IN THE RAIN FOR HOURS cheering, then I could run my best and hardest for them. And, so I did! Fastest RD mile to date!

The Mile 5 marker is right by the Shipwreck in Stormalong Bay, and RunDisney does NOT disappoint with everything they pack into the last mile of this course. You go backstage right before the entrance to the World Showcase - and that will likely have your last hydration stop of the race - but when you pop back out, you're by the Land Pavilion (they had the Soarin' music playing, because who doesn't love Soarin'???), and the you race down by The Seas before going under the Innoventions underpass and then ... #BlessedBall! Under the shadow of the ball and then straight on to the finish line.

Pretty much the most perfect RunDisney course ever constructed, I mean, in my opinion!

I'm only planning to truly race one race this Dopey time, and weather-permitting I'm going to truly race this 10K and see if I can best not only my RD 10K PR, but also my personal 10K PR.

So, there you have it. I'm Keels, and I LOVE the WDW 10K course!

Next Week: I'm Thankful to be a #DisneyRunner
