A few people have asked if I will do a trip report, which is something I have never done before! It has been crazy since we got home 10 days ago, including a dead bat in our house and an ER trip and rabies shots for 5! But things are finally calming down a tad (1 more round to go . . . ) and I am hoping to manage a trip report a little at a time. Bear with me since I've never done this before! :goodvibes

This trip was to celebrate my 50th birthday and also our younger son's college graduation and commissioning as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. We are so thankful to have him home for a little while before he goes to serve our country. We had our entire family of 6 with us: Myself, dh, ds almost 25, ds 22, dd 15 and dd 13. Our oldest flew home on the 12th to get back to work, but we were glad to have him for a week. As kids get older, you learn it is a rarity to have everyone under one roof for any length of time.

We flew out Monday 6/6 and had a great flight from SeaTac to Honolulu on Alaska. We spent the first 2 nights at the Hale Koa in Waikiki, thanks to our son having military privileges. The location and hotel grounds are very nice, and the rooms were a pretty typical hotel room. Great price, though, so I'm definitely not complaining! :goodvibes

We did Pearl Harbor, Arizona Memorial, U.S.S. Bowfin and U.S.S. Missouri on the 7th. I had reserved 10 a.m. tickets online exactly at the 60 day mark. I was thankful that we chose an early-ish time because everything 11:45 a.m. and on was cancelled due to the winds. It was extremely windy that day. In fact, my son lost his favorite hat off the Bowfin during a wind gust. :sad1:

We didn't have any major traffic issues getting to Pearl Harbor for the 10:00 time. We left around 8:30 I think and got there around 9:00. Parking was already quite full but we found a spot across the street.

We purchased 4-day Go Oahu cards through Costco and used our first day for the audio tour at the Arizonza, and for the Bowfin and Missouri. We would have done the museum as well, but everyone was exhausted by that point and DS 25 had a bad sunburn (despite sunscreen . . . they think I put on "ungodly amounts of sunscreen" but I don't burn! :confused3 ).

The audio tour was good, but a bit long for our tolerance level I think overall. We enjoyed the Bowfin, but by the time we got to the Missouri, DS 25 was done. It was kind of a bummer because the Missouri used to be in WA, so we have pictures on it when our boys were little. But it was hot and everyone's tolerance was waning so we went through quickly.

We made a stop at the Pearl Harbor NEX on the way back, thanks again to DS 22's military privileges. We could all get in the NEX with him, but only people with military ID can get into the commissary there. So we sent him in with a list for a few things. Didn't want to get too much because we only had the little frig's at the Hale Koa and we had to transport everything to Aulani the next day. So just did the bare necessities (ha ha): water bottles, diet coke, paper towels, paper plates, etc. He forgot the milk (which is why I don't let the 22 year old grocery shop alone! ;) ).

The night of the 7th we did the crab fest at the Hale Koa, which they have from time to time. It was good, but not fabulous. My stepfather gets fresh crab here at home, so we are a bit spoiled in the crab department. Still had a nice time with the experience, though.

We didn't really do anything else in Waikiki except a little time at the ocean both evenings. Probably would have been good to explore it a little more when we were there.

I will try to figure out how to insert pictures . . . mine are all too big when I try to upload them as a file. Anyone have suggestions?

On Wednesday 6/8 we checked out of the Hale Koa and headed for Aulani.

One thing I want to share: our navigation on our phones did TERRIBLE on Oahu. We ended up turned around and lost so many times! We finally went old school and always got printed directions from the hotel. The Aulani bell desk has little cards that have directions to and from just about anywhere and they will give you approx. lengths of time to plan as well.

I am thinking of this specifically because we had a really hard time getting from Waikiki to the swap meet, and even worse from the swap meet to Aulani. I don't think it's all that hard, but our phones just were not giving us the little steps like which interim exit to take to get to the next major highway, which led to wrong choices, in terrible traffic and lots of frustration.

We got to the swap meet about 11 a.m. on Wednesday. It was already really hot. The males in our family did not have much patience for this stop, so unfortunately the females only got to walk around for less than an hour. They had really great prices on jewelry, Hawaiian print clothes, souvenirs, etc. I wish we could have gone back--earlier in the day and without the male non-shoppers. ;-) We got some bracelets, a couple dresses for my mom, a swim suit for 1 daughter and a dress for the other, a shirt for my step father (which was cheaper at the Hale Koa we found out) and some taffy.

We finally made our way to Aulani and got there around 1 p.m. Our room wasn't ready, but it wasn't supposed to be until 4 p.m

**Biggest mistake I made on the trip: not packing the swim stuff in a separate bag we could keep with us and use to get in the water at Aulani right away before our room was ready. We could have asked for the bags back from the bell hops, but it just seemed like too much of a hassle. Everyone was kind of cranky because they just wanted to get in the pool/ocean and we didn't have our stuff. :-(

We ended up getting back in the car and going on our Costco/Target run, eating at the Costco food court, and actually got the text that our room was ready when we were on the drive back. Costco/Target is the next exit away, so only 5-10 minutes. Super convenient and Costco definitely has the best prices on pretty much everything. Especially pineapple and gas! Oh, if you are getting groceries, bring your own plastic or reusable bags because you can't get them at Target. And buy foil. We used foil for everything!

We had breakfast in our room every day (cereal/costco muffins/eggs), sandwiches for lunch every day (either at the hotel or made them and took with us in a cooler) and then had several dinners we made ourselves: Costco take n bake, Costco ready to cook ravioli lasagna and Costco frozen hamburger patties ( cook on the grills and check out BBQ tools from the community room). We got 2 meals from 1 pack of Costco burgers and pack of Costco buns. We got salad kits from Costco as well to have with them. I think this cut our food costs down tremendously. Food at Aulani is crazy expensive, and for 6 people it could have really added up.

3 out of our 6 people got the refillable mugs and I felt like we got our $ worth out of them. The rest of us drink more water than anything else so we just had water bottles and refilled them at the water stations.

Our boys (25 and 22) did buy some Vodka at Costco and juice at Target and made some drinks. That probably saved us a couple of hundred $ in bar tab. They had 1 drink each and I had a virgin smoothie type thing (which was delicious) at Off the Hook the first day and that came to $38.

However, the Dole Whips are amazing, and at $4 they give you a pretty big serving. I tried the Dole Whip and vanilla soft serve swirl, which was to die for. Dh thought I was committing a cardinal sin by tainting a Dole whip with something less worthy, but I thought it was even better. And I love Dole Whips, so that is saying a lot!

We ended up with an awesome 2 bedroom lock-off on the 14th floor with a view of the valley and the ocean. Perfect, and just what I had requested! Kids went down to the pool/lazy river while dh and I unpacked. We cooked take n bake pizza from Costco at about 9 p.m. and I swear almost set off the smoke detectors in the whole hotel because ds 22 dumped a bunch of the grated cheese on the bottom. Had to open up all doors to the hall and to the balcony to try to air the place out before we caused a full out fire alarm! ACK!

I am enjoying your TR. Thanks for taking the time to post it. Do you think you will return to Aulani?

Joining in! I have never visited Hawaii and am sure I would get lost even with the best GPS! Wish you and your daughters had more time at the Swap Meet - I can either spend hours at one depending on the booths and weather. Heat just does me in so would have to go early in the morning. Loved your suggestion of getting food to prepare in the room, it saves so much money. Sounds like you had a fabulous view and can't wait to see pics! Wish I could suggest on how to downsize your pics - my son always has to help with Photobucket and Flickr.

Can't wait for more - we are doing two nights at Hale Koa and four nights at Aulani next spring, so this is extremely interesting to me. What fun! I also use photobucket. From your computer, you just download into a photobucket library. Then you pull up the pic you want, click on the text within the "Direct" section, and paste it into your trip report by using the "Image" icon here on the DisBoards.

Thanks! I will try to keep adding more as I have time. I have done photobucket in the past--I need to delete some photos so I can fit more. I just seems so cumbersome to do every photo that way.

What type room are you having at Aulani?

We have a teenaged son, and are staying in a one-bedroom villa. Looking into renting points, so we've sent the inquiry into DVC Rentals. We've never been to Hawaii, and have always opted for a DCL cruise or WDW resort for our "big" vacation of the year. However, we think it's time to try something a little different next year, and we've been wanting to see Aulani. We arrive on Saturday, and think we'll see Pearl Harbor sights on Sunday. I guess it will actually be 3 nights at Hale Koa (Sat, Sun, Mon) and 4 nights at Aulani (Tues, Wed, Thurs, Fri) and fly home Saturday night. Should be an awesome vacation - but I've not planned a vacation in a long time where everything was "new" - so it's a big intimidating, and I'm living on these boards lately. LOL!

You will love it! I know what you mean, I was kind of intimidated by it all too. These boards help a TON though.

Are you or your husband in the military?

On the evening of the 8th, we went to the Starlit Hui. We got in line at around 6:15-6:30. Actually hubby got in line and the rest of us walked around the resort. We bought the refillable mugs for him and our daughters and filled them, so he was happy with his diet coke. We got very good seats--most of our family on a mat in the front and my son and I on chairs to the side. My bad back doesn't take sitting on the ground.

The show was nice, but honestly I was underwhelmed. They had some fun little activities before the show, which were great for younger kids. Our son (22) went up with his sisters to learn the Aulani hula, which honestly was worth the wait just in itself. But for the show itself--I guess I was expecting more. We loved the ukelele players the best. I would still recommend that people go, because it was very nice, but don't expect it to be a full blown show like you'd see at DLR or WDW.

UGGG, internet is giving me fits . . . wouldn't post my entry, and then posted it 3 times. Sorry!

OK, I think I figured out how to get the photos on from photobucket.
We had a 2-bedroom lock-off. The 1-bedroom portion was 1458, the studio portion 1456. This was in the Ewa tower. If you go up the main set of 6 elevators, turn right as you come out of the elevator section and walk straight past the little area with chairs and windows, we had the first two doors on the left. I am going to attempt to put in pictures of 1458, both of the room and of the view from that room.

Ah, thanks for posting this! I have such great memories of the Hale Koa! Yes, the rooms are rather basic-- but clean and the price can't be beat AND the MP's will escort teen-aged daughters back to the room after curfew--no extra charge! :lmao:And at the end of the day, it's Hawaii--who cares about the room!

The Aulani looks beautiful, glad you are home safe but my gosh that's  about the bat!!!

Sorry you didn't get to do more shopping...men!:rolleyes2

Congrats on the college graduation, and a big THANK YOU to your son in the service!

Ocean View studio 1456, Ewa tower. This was the studio portion of our 2-bedroom lock-off.
