They Should Make Margaritas a Snack Credit! - September 2011 Dining Review

Wow, you really knocked those reviews out!

Just the menu from V&A's intimidates me! Yowza, that's a lot of food.

Biergarten is on the list of possibilities for my next family trip. It looks like fun and a place the kids would enjoy.

Did I mention I'm trying to talk my DH into the two of us taking a trip to WDW, just the 2 of us, to celebrate our 15th anniversary? The trip isn't even 100% decided yet, but I'm already thinking of places to eat, LOL!

Wow I had a lot of reviews to catch up on!!
I've really enjoyed reading them
Totally agree with you about HBD; we just weren't very interested in it but once we tried it we loved it
I love the look of you Dragon Roll at CG :)
Thanks again for your wonderful reviews :)

Thank you so much for reading them and commenting! I'm kind of bummed that they're complete now, but there will be lots more later this year, and I'm already itching to start planning! Wait, who am I kidding, I AM planning already, just in my notebook and not on a TR. :lmao:

Thoroughly enjoyed reading your reviews! I love your writing style and sense of humour, thanks so much for sharing your experiences! :goodvibes

Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm glad you've enjoyed them and hope you'll join again later when the October trip is complete! I'm sure I'll have plenty more to complain...ahem.... comment on!:lmao:

I'm sorry, I always seem to forget about dining reviews, even when I subbed to them, which is why I never commented! But I read all of your reviews and loved them, especially the V&A one, since I'll probably never go there! :rotfl:

And your Steamboat Willie cake is AMAZING!!! :woohoo: I'm thinking of possibly maybe doing an anniversary cake for Brandon and I in May, since it's our anniversary trip and everything, but I have no idea how to go about ordering a cake! :confused3

Thanks again for your reviews! :goodvibes

No worries sweetie, I'm the same way! If you can't swing V&A, I'd say save up for Bistro... it's really a lovely place and great atmosphere!

I can help you with the ordering, it depends on the location you want it delivered to (different bakeries handle different resorts / restaurants.) Start with the cake hotline: 407-827-2253 and go from there. I would highly recommend the Contemporary bakery, and I've heard / seen great things from GF and BWI as well.

Your updatepalooza is fantastic! I've been reading the whole time but am only now coming out of lurkerdom to comment.

(Also, you have the best name ever--of course I'm referring to Jennifer. It's also my name. Not that I'm biased or anything. ;))

I too am a Carolina bbq fan after spending lots of time with family in the Piedmont area. Give me a good vinegar sauce and some coleslaw and I am happy! But my kinda bizarre taste in bbq (it's a 100 mile area or so that loves bbq like that and everyone else thinks we're insane! :lmao:) has kept me away from WDW bbq for fear I won't like it. I still may try it... one day.

Everything looks amazing except for the Yachtsman raw meat--why I won't be able to eat there. Big hunks of red meat = yuck. (For me, anyways. I know most people would disagree.)

The fish at Bistro de Paris, even with the bad cell phone picture, looks AMAZING, and so does the sushi roll at CG.

The celebration cake turned out so well! It's awesome they can do that. :worship:

Congrats on your anniversary and thanks for sharing with us! I'm glad you guys had a good time.

Woo hoo! More Jennifers! :goodvibes I think there are quite a lot of us on DIS... :welcome: out of lurkdom!

There is a place near Gettysburg, PA that has pretty amazing bbq... one of those hole in the wall places with Harleys out front. Love it.

I'm glad you said that about the Yachtsman, because I didn't want people to think I was joking. I have a friend that worked for USDA for a long time and while she's not vegetarian, she as many others get a bit turned off from seeing her food prepared.

Thanks so much... we had a blast and I'm looking forward to sharing our next dining adventure later this year!:goodvibes

You didn't mention that! When is your anniversary, June? And it's never too early to start planning where you want to eat. I called a few places yesterday just to inquire about different options, even though our ADRs won't "go live" until the middle of April!:lmao:

Biergarten is great as long as you like eating with complete strangers. Some are better with it than others. Kids, typically, love it from what I've seen! (though they often are not too thrilled by the menu, depends on how adventurous they are...and how much they like vinegar)

Fantastic reviews. Love California Grill! One of my favorites on property. That cake looks amazing!

BTW, a rude guest in V&A? Do tell the story....if you can/want!

Jill in CO

It's Ryan. And he is amazing!

Those entrees at CG look so delicious. I thought I knew what I was going to order in August (pork tenderloin), but now I'm confused.

Our anniversary isn't until October (the 18th, to be exact). I was looking at the Free Dining promo that just came out, but we won't be able to go (if we go at all) until mid-October at the earliest. Now I'm thinking about waiting until November to go... I've never been during the holidays, and I would LOVE to see all the decorations!

Like I said, it's not even 100% decided that we'll go. Shane wants to be sure he gets his promotion/raise before he commits to spending the money on a Disney trip (even for just the 2 of us) and that won't be until May or so. But, who am I kidding... I already have the trip planned out (in my head, at least)! So keep your fingers crossed! :thumbsup2

Thank you so much!!!:cutie:

Oh yes, very rude, and I will share the story.... I'll post a link to it here once I get it updated on my February TR (combined food and regular report into one since it was such a short trip....)

Woo hoo, this means I'm right! :lmao:

I just went back and looked at your dining review from 2010, I think? That PORK LOOKS AMAZING!!!! Now you've got ME rethinking my next meal there!:rotfl2:

Ok, so the selfish part of me says you should absolutely go mid-October because that's when we'll be there....but the jealous part of me says you should go November so I can live vicariously through your Holiday decoration photos!:goodvibes

I'll cross my fingers for you that you get to "get away" with your hubby. I think early November has been showing up in some of the discounts / PINs, so that might help as well.

But, totally, go in October so you guys can come have margaritas with us.:goodvibes

First off, THANK YOU all for joining me on this Dining Review, and for sticking with me when I went MIA once or twice or....ahem ;)

This does bring our Dining Review to a close, however, so I'll leave you with a thought:

Calories consumed in Disney are nothing more than Pixie Dust; therefore you gain no weight.

It's my story and I'm stickin to it!!!

If you want to hear all about where we plan to eat NEXT time, jump on over to my PTR:

“I could get used to a view like this…Guys, I want a castle.” – An Oct 2012 PTR

Hope to see you there!:goodvibes

Guess what I just got in the mail today?

A 30% off PIN for October travel dates.

I'm thinking this is fate. Kismet. Meant to be.

SQUEEEEE!

(That squeal of excitement is not only for the fact that with a PIN, I'm closer to convincing my hubby we should go... but also that we could meet! {doing a little happy dance!} :yay: )

Heading over there now!

Now how did you do with the scene in Rocky where he is training in a meat packing house? Or is it just the sight of the food in context with actual dining.

I totally get that!

I had just finished writing about half of a really long reply this morning and POOF! It disappeared.

Jen- thanks so much for sharing your excellent dining experiences with us! I totally LOVE food porn and your pictures and descriptions are fantastic!

First off- I agree with the previous poster who said you should post the pictures of you and Mike all dressed up. Please edit those in.

Victoria & Alberts sounds like an amazing meal. The problem with me eating there is that I have a serious plate-clearing compulsion and I know this meal would do me in by course 6. Or maybe 4.

You didn't tell us about the chair for your purse.

Raglan Road- that is such a creative presentation of the appetizer. Love it!

Yachtsman- I may borrow a couple of these pics for the BC/YC thread if you don't mind. I am severely stymied by the 25 picture per post limit and I am toying with starting a BC/YC only Food Porn forum, and then linking it to the dining section of the thread. Someday. The scallops look and sound to-die-for. Excellent scallops are one of the best foods under the sea! The chocolate torte with habanero and key lime gelato also sounds intriguing.

Gonna post this now and then finish in a new post. Gun shy.

Le Bistro- haven't been there but I do have a couple of stories about past attempts at using my 4 years of High School French while visiting Montreal. The first was during a HS band trip. I tried ordering French Onion Soup en Francais and I was served onion rings. The second time was on my honeymoon. We were staying at a really classy hotel and eating in one of their restaurants. Mark and I were 21 when we married, I looked really young. Well, the waiter was really looking down at us and at one point I overheard him make a comment to another waiter in French about us that was not complimentary. When he came back to our table, I said something to Mark in French and the waiter's face dropped.

Brown Derby- what beautiful presentations of the food. Love the picture of Stitch in the drink.

Rose and Crown
- LOVE the glass of treats! Food looks yummy.

Ohana- have not done the breakfast there. Sorry the character interaction was not great for you. :thumbsup2 on the juice. I think it is the same one at Kona, and it is SOOOOO good!

Thanks again!

Hi Jen - just read through all of your report :goodvibes ... I think you've made my mind up about trying Jiko in October! :thumbsup2 I went there about 10 years ago with my family, but DH as never been.. I think it's one we'd both really like.

Emma princess: x

Really enjoyed all your reviews.

We had the exact same table at Ohana and saw the characters quickly - must depend on when you are seated.

Score!...diggin' your thread, though late to the game :confused3. Planning my honeymoon in the world (haven't been since I was 3) and it's all based around the eating (and drinking!!!) experience. I've been searching these boards for weeks for snipits and tidbits, but having a hard time filtering out those who call themselves "foodies" while ranking Carraba's as their favorite venue. Needless to say, your reviews have by far been the most insightful. All our dinners are booked, and thanks to you, we have a day based around La Cava del Tequila :worship:

Thanks, Dee! It's really been so much fun writing down all these reviews, I'm glad you enjoyed them. I certainly learned a few things I would like to improve on future eating endeavors. :rotfl2: Hopefully the next DR will have even more pretty pictures! ( I have a plan to get pics of a V&A dinner.....cross your fingers....)

Please, feel free to use any of my pictures for the YC/BC thread!

And how could I have forgotten the purse-chair! The lovely little ottoman nicely held my super-awesome-yet-only-10-dollars clutch! Unfortunately, I think the chair left with more "pixie dust" than it started with....apparently ten dollars buys you glitter that transfers to anything it touches.:confused3

You've just made me realize why Kona is such a better meal for us, I adored that juice!:goodvibes

I had a similar experience with those thinking I didn't understand their language. Years ago while working a contract in the city, I was on the Metro, which gets a lot of tourists. A French couple was seated just across from me. For some reason, the lady could not stand the "vulgar American outfits" and was going on and on to her husband about it. (poor man, he looked like he was in pain) She especially disliked a hat a woman was wearing in front of us. When my stop came, I stood up, turned to her, and told her I thought it was a rather nice hat....in French.

Oh, the look on her face was so worth it!

The look on her husband's face....again... poor man.:sad2:

Thank you!

I believe you're right, it's all in the timing. We realized that character meals are not quite our thing... probably because we don't have children.:goodvibes Granted, I am still going to try and get ADRs for both CRT and CP on our next trip....I will never learn.....:rolleyes1

Why thank you!!!:goodvibes I love hearing that my little opinions are useful!!!

First, congrats on your wedding and honeymoon! You're going to have a fantastic time, I'm sure. Do you have a resort picked out yet?

Also, if you are going to spend some time at Cava, let me give you a bit of advice....if you have Twitter, follow them, they have awesome drink specials. And go on a Monday, when those drink specials are usually going on and it's not too crowded. Avoid Saturdays, it's a madhouse.

Hmm, I'm starting to sound like I go there a lot or something....:rolleyes1

Tokyo Dining

On our arrival day, I booked a late lunch at Tokyo Dining for us. It was a place I was interested in trying but figured if we missed it due to a late arrival, etc.; it wouldn’t be the end of the world. I have to say I’m really glad we didn’t miss it though, because it was simply fabulous.:thumbsup2

Now, on to the main dishes. It’s key to note if you are on the dining plan, you do have the option of items from the sushi menu as your entrée. Mike did this and ordered a deluxe sushi plate from the sushi menu. I pretty much devoured all the tamago off his plate, it was that good.:woohoo: Another thing, if you ever get a chance to watch a sushi chef make this, it’s fascinating. It’s basically a sweet egg omelet, but with really thin layers, that the chef folds over and over again, then cuts into strips to put on top of sushi rice. It makes you realize what an art form sushi is.

We're big sushi fans and I have been trying for months to find out if there are sushi options on the dining plan. Thanks for posting this, it's super helpful. :thumbsup2 Maybe we'll do the same strategy - book it for arrival day.

So, dear reader, remember that cake I mentioned in our first post? I had planned a little surprise for my husband, in the form of a custom cake. The process for ordering was painless and the pastry chefs at the Contemporary know their stuff! I did the rough design and they made it amazing...

...but where are my manners? You should see the pictures!!

Ryan/Bryan brought it over from behind my husband, so the surprise was held until the very last minute!!!

(I think he liked it....)

Mike is a huge fan of classic Mickey and “Steamboat Willie”..... so it was a no brainer what it should look like. The cake itself was chocolate with a peanut butter mousse.

A fantastic finish to a fantastic trip.

OMG! Where can I get that cake! :goodvibes:goodvibes

Great report. I confess i start mentally singing "Sunset Blvd" too. That shake looked amazing. That cake was gorgeous! Glad you had a fantastic trip. So sorry for the loss of your father. He sounds like an amazing man.

We're booking it for our departure day now, turns out it's a new ritual for us! My Dh joked that it was a way for us to ease back into the "real world" since it looks a lot like the sushi places around our house!:lmao:

OMG! Where can I get that cake! :goodvibes:goodvibes

Chef Brian at the Contemporary
I called the cake hotline with my ideas, then was given an email for the pastry chefs. I sent pictures and we went back and forth a bit on what the final design would be.
It's chocolate cake, peanut butter mousse, and fondant.
It was exactly what I hoped for.
Until I dropped it on the way home.

Thanks for reading! Also, thank you for your kind words. He truly was amazing, and I hope to be a little bit more like him when I'm older.:goodvibes
