There's a First Time for Everything - A September 2016 PTR

Hi! Just popping in from lurking to offer an opinion which may or may not be helpful.

What about the California Grill? It's a monorail ride away from Epcot.

The best meal I've ever ate came from the California Grill. And then the dessert was incredible as well. And then we got to watch Wishes from the observation deck. Amazing. I've eaten there twice and never been disappointed.

But it might take too much time away from Epcot??

I like the idea of doing Yachtsman instead of GG dinner - is there nothing available that night for Yachtsman or have you not tried yet? I recently read a review of WCC breakfast. They enjoyed the food although I don't think it was anything out of this world, and I believe the shenanigans were present but not that much. Maybe ask over on the restaurant forum? If you do end up deciding not to do breakfast there, Kona is definitely another option. However if you do decide to switch out GG dinner with Yachtsman you could try doing GG for breakfast......we did it last Nov. and LOVED it! We're doing it again this November :thumbsup2

I actually ended up looking into the Yachtsman again. I didn't see any appetizers that I would want to share with my mom. Womp-womp. My dad is an adventurous eater, so I ate a lot of different things with him. But my mom wouldn't go for a cheese plate or anything like that. So even though the Yachtsman has some amaaaazing steak, we're going to pass. And I have basically changed everything. So hold onto your hat, because I'm going to post my updates food-wise here in a minute!

Your idea about the California Grill was so inspiring, I actually ended up completely redoing most of my reservations. :confused3 I really liked the options at California Grill, but trying to find a time that fit for all of our nights there was really hard. Everyone wants to be there late for Wishes. I want to be there late so I can spend more time in the parks. :( It just didn't work out. But I think I made some better choices!! I think I'll definitely end up at the California Grill in the future. Each trip I'm going to force myself to give up one of the things I KNOW is good to try something different. But thank you so much for popping in to offer your opinion! I really appreciated how much it made me think!

UPDATED RESTAURANT LIST

Because I'm a crazy person, I have completely changed all of my reservations. Since I couldn't find any Universal restaurants that I wanted to try, and since I had added that extra day onto my trip, I readjusted my food plans.

THURSDAY:
Probably Jake's at the RPR at Universal.

FRIDAY:
Raglan Road at 8:45PM. Since Universal closes early, we're not going to worry about closing the parks. I'm more worried about enjoying our AMAZING food at Raglan. I looooved every bite from that restaurant!!!

SATURDAY:
Chef Art Smith's Homecoming Dinner at 9:10pm. Again, I figured we wouldn't worry ourselves with shutting down the park. I did just about everything last time in one day. So we'll conquer everything in two. And then we'll devour the entire menu at Homecoming!

SUNDAY: 2
Be Our Guest at 2pm. Mom's never been. The lunch is pretty good!

'Ohana at 9:00pm. It'll be a nice break from the park. The Polynesian is BEAUTIFUL and the food is even better!

MONDAY: 2
Kona Cafe at 7:55am. I really want to try Tonga Toast and the Macadamia Nut Pancakes.

The Wave Dinner at 9:15pm. Their food looks truly inspired. Out of all of the restaurants I looked into, the dishes seemed like they would appeal to us the most. I was really impressed with the reviews in comparison to Artist Point, which was where I originally had my 'new' reservation after ditching the Garden Grill.

TUESDAY: 2
50's Prime Time Cafe at 12:10pm. We have never been there, so we're hoping that even though we're on the dining plan, they'll still play along. I've read that some people didn't receive excellent service either way if they were or were not on the dining plan. So I have no idea what to believe. But if it seems like our waiter isn't having fun, I'm going to just be honest. We always tip well and even though we're on the DDP, we prepared ourselves in advance. So we're happy to tip for good service, great food, and a lot of fun. But hopefully it won't be a problem in the first place.

La Hacienda de San Angel at 7:30pm. Maybe we'll get window seats for Illuminations? Though I don't know that I want to be in the restaurant for 1 1/2 hours. Mom actually picked this one, once I forced her to help me, since I was going crazy.

WEDNESDAY: 3
Olivia's Cafe at 8:00am. We might, we might not, I'm not sure. My mom might throw in the towel. She's not a huge eater. But I feel like two meals for the amount of walking we'll do every day isn't unreasonable. Especially since most of our meals are early and then late. The banana bread french toast appealed to me here.

Jiko at 9:15pm. This is our 'fancy' dinner. What's nice is that since we're staying at the AKL, we can get dolled up in our hotel room and then wander around our own resort to go to dinner, rather than having to drive somewhere else. (It also means I might imbibe. I learned I like SOME alcoholic drinks!)

THURSDAY: 3
Boma at 7:35am. I AM SO EXCITED FOR BOMA. I keep trying to convince myself to just move it up earlier in the trip, but then it messes up my other breakfasts. So I'm just leaving it alone. But from all the hype this restaurant has, it's one of the ONLY reservations I won't cancel or change.

Le Cellier at 4:00pm. I have added, modified, and canceled this restaurant more times than I can explain. But since I'm on the DDP, I'm totally fine with TS credits now. So now we can try the infamous steak and the fries and the desserts. I wasn't going to, because we can try the filet outside in the Food and Wine Festival. But I really did want to try other things from this restaurant. And worst comes to worst, I cancel it and we go somewhere else. This is the night we have our MNSSHP tickets. So since we really only want to ride things, I'm not worried about getting into lines at 4pm.

FRIDAY:
What's Cooking with .... GRAHAM ELLIOT!!! 9:15am to 10:45am. Okay, guys. I am LOSING it. I'm SO EXCITED for Graham!!! It's going to be SO COOL. I've never done anything like that, so I'm REALLY EXCITED!! Have any of you done an event like that? I'd love to know what exactly to expect!

Bongo's Cuban Cafe at 9:15pm. I figure, it's the last night at the park. We should ride things and then go for a crazy awesome dinner. Mom picked this place and I want to eat EVERYTHING there. It's one of my main motivations for paying the extra money for the dining plan.

SATURDAY:
The Wave at 8:30am. Their breakfast looks boooomb. We will go to the Magic Kingdom, since we'll be right there, hit up Seven Dwarves and Space Mountain and then race back to Epcot to say goodbye to Soarin'.

I have no idea what we'll do for lunch, if anything.

So there you have it! My meal plans are done for now! (Though I did change meal times in the process of writing this. I'm shameless.) According to my countdown app, there is 1 months, 25 days, 18 hours, 51 minutes, and 35, 34, 33, 32 seconds until we're headed to our plane! I'm SO excited. But as always, I know I'm going to be so devastated when I have to stop planning again. I just love to plan... :goodvibes:goodvibes:goodvibes

So! Anything you'd upvote or downvote? Have you had good experiences or bad experiences? Things we should DEFINITELY try or DEFINITELY avoid? Let me know!

I'm sorry that Cali Grill didn't work out for you but it looks like you've got some great choices anyway. I have only been to about half of the restaurants you have listed but those I haven't been to seem like solid choices to me and some I would like to try myself some day. Boma is my favorite "regular" (i.e. not signature) restaurant at Disney. If you don't already know, ask for the Jungle Juice for your drink for breakfast. I'm jealous about Jiko but we are already doing the Lunch with an Animal Specialist at Sanaa plus we are eating at Le Cellier and the Yachtsman completely OOP so Jiko is going to have to wait for another time. I'm excited to here what you think about all of your choices once you've eaten there!

My new plan to keep from being devastated when the planning stops is to....just not stop planning. (Brilliant, huh? :upsidedow ) I'm going to try and have the next trip lined up before the current one starts so that I have something to pull me out of post-Disney depression. Even if that trip is more than a year out. We'll see how it goes!

Oh, and not to put a complete wrench in your dining plans because they are just fine BUUUTTTT you can keep looking every day and see if something opens up at Cali Grill.

Just sayin'....

Your dining plans look good! Let me say this: OMG, I fell in LOVE with BOMA breakfast in January :cloud9::love: French Toast Bread Pudding = heaven...... I tried working it in to our Nov. trip but just couldn't do it, and since our Aug. trip is so short I wanted to stay closer to our resort for breakfasts. And yes, it's making me sad!

I don't think 2 sit down meals a day is a lot at all, we often do that. Three can be a lot although we've done that on occasion, also, but we love our food :o I've heard and read very good things about the Wave breakfast and I'm actually considering the Wave dinner for August, both menus look so good!

Ugh! Work has been crazy lately! I'm sorry for bailing on you guys!! We've been planning/organizing/executing our vacation bible school at church. We're on the last day tomorrow and then it's Disney all the way! It's starting to get harder and harder to imagine myself going as we get closer and closer. The days start ticking down and I'm worried I'm going to wake up and it's all a dream.

I mean, my BANK ACCOUNT knows it's real (am I right or what?) but my brain is having some real problems lately. (I keep paying off chunks of my credit cards and it looks like my tip calculator is saying I'm spending close to $350 in 20% tips alone.) So the lack of money, living paycheck to paycheck, should I really buy this Chipotle so I can eat a Dole Whip in Disney guilt is a thing. But the counting down week to week is agonizing.

And I guess trying to lose a substantial amount of weight pre-Disney didn't go as planned. My brain sort of went 'Oh, well, we're planning on eating everything in Disney, so we might as well just enjoy ourselves now'. So I'm stuck at a particular set point. I'd REALLY like to lose at LEAST 10 pounds in the next six weeks (totally reasonable), but tell that to my brain.

We're trying to come up with a small goal to get ourselves to lose weight, but there's always something around the corner. Next weekend our city has 'Little Italy Days' where people set up their wares and their food trucks in one part of the city on a long street and you can just walk end to end and buy food. (That's my kind of thing.) I'm trying not to do the 'Oh, I'll start eating healthy after Little Italy Days' thing, since I know I'm not going to eat that much there. (The money thing...) I don't want to NOT go, but I don't want to spend my Dole Whip money either.

As for Disney, I'm really excited that we're so close!!! I've paid everything off except the rental car. I wanted to use my southwest card for the points with Alamo, but I'm thinking it might be better to go cheaper. Is $200 + gas for a 10 day car rental cheap?

I'm wondering if we have a day too much at Universal and a day too little at Disney. I keep trying to tell myself that we'll go back again, but I really want this trip to be special.

My mom's job has been particularly hellish lately and my job isn't any kind of peachy either. I keep telling myself that if I can JUST get to Disney, everything's going to be okay! But then I think about coming home...and then I'm sad again.

So! Some Disney Business. I have our days set out like this: Sunday: Magic Kingdom. Monday: Epcot. Tuesday: Hollywood Studios. Wednesday: Animal Kingdom. Thursday: Epcot/Magic Kingdom. Friday: Hollywood Studios. Saturday: Epcot.

But let's be honest. We're going to end up spending a lot of time in Epcot and the MK because they have the most rides. All of our fastpasses in HS are for Rockin Roller Coaster and the Tower of Terror because my mom LOVES them. I got a FP for Star Tours. I'm a new convert, so I'm so excited to see all the Star Wars stuff! I want to rewatch the movies before we go. I've seen the first six once and the seventh twice (though with much commentary and not so much movie).

I think with 42 days, I could probably watch a movie a day to count down to our trip between Marvel, Disney, Harry Potter, and Star Wars.

Do you guys have anything that helps you pass the time? I have a calendar that I color at work. Seeing the days physically go by is a little helpful, but I feel like August is crawling AND flying by.

Same.

:rotfl: If I think it's all a dream I can just check my bank account.

My goal was to do more walking beforehand because the parks killed my feet last time. (I almost never wear sneakers normally so there were blisters everywhere). But ugh that went out the window the same way. My boyfriend works outside so he wants to rest after work, and then I'm always like I'll be lazy today and go tomorrow... then I got sick this week. There's still time for both our goals though!

I think so, that sounds like a good deal to me.

I'm wondering if we have a day too much at Universal and a day too little at Disney. I keep trying to tell myself that we'll go back again, but I really want this trip to be special.

I think you have a good balance that's actually how I do it too. It looks like you're doing Fri-Sun Universal then Sun-Sat Disney. That's exactly how we're doing ours.

I keep telling myself that if I can JUST get to Disney, everything's going to be okay! But then I think about coming home...and then I'm sad again.

I know I'm so excited, but then I'm like ugh I have to go back to work after :rotfl2: I think what's going to help this time is having another trip coming up.

Yes! I've been trying to do that. (I don't usually get in the 1 a day I want to, but on my days off sometimes I watch more than 1). I don't even need to re-watch the Harry Potter ones since I do that constantly already. :rotfl:

Do you guys have anything that helps you pass the time? I have a calendar that I color at work. Seeing the days physically go by is a little helpful, but I feel like August is crawling AND flying by.

I feel the same way about August! I can't believe we're so far in already, but it feels like the days are crawling. :confused3 I cross off days in my date book when I go to work in the morning and I have a countdown app on my phone, but that really isn't enough either. Spending time on here helps, and I have a lot of free time to plan and such at work. I also go home for lunch most of time and sometimes I watch a short Disney vlog while I'm eating. So I guess watching vlogs, doing the movie a day, and listening to music helps. Planning the trip or planning what to wear on the trip is another favorite of mine. I also post Disney/Universal pictures on my Instagram and blog. I also have a lot of down time at work so besides planning I can read. I've been reading a lot of really awesome Disney books and I re-read the Harry Potter books too. My favorite are the Vault of Walt and ones on Disney history by Jim Korkis.

There's still time for both our goals though!

My mom's going to deflate in the parks because she's 55 and while she's resilient, I accidentally broke my dad when I took him. We worked so hard through the AIRPORT that he got blisters. Blisters that multiplied over our 22k step day in Universal. To the point where he looked like a ballerina on some days because he'd go to stand to find a spot that didn't hurt and would wobble on his toes until he adjusted to the pain. To be fair, part of that was the fault of new shoes. But I'm scared my mom won't be able to do as much as I would like. We already discussed how she won't hop to opposite sides of the park. (I.E. Riding Space Mountain and then running over to the Haunted Mansion, since they're a little bit away from each other. She'd rather go ride to ride in proximity.)

I feel like the heat and humidity in Pennsylvania have been a little bit of nice practice for Florida, but man has it curbed my desire to walk each night. :( Pretty soon, both of us will be saying 'I'll walk tomorrow' and we'll be walking through the gates of Universal AND Disney! :D

I know I'm so excited, but then I'm like ugh I have to go back to work after :rotfl2: I think what's going to help this time is having another trip coming up.

Work will probably be the end of me. I keep looking to find something else that pays a living wage. But there are benefits to the job I have now. And I can't decide if I want to stay where I am and not have to pay $100ish in gas for a $15/hr job or just stay where I am, even if it's significantly less. I think half of it is the work atmosphere and the monotony (and the sitting for 8 hours a day). Like, SOME of the people I work with are amazing. But when I think about going back to it in October, I want to find a cave and move in with the bats... We're not planning another trip until 2018, so it'll be a little harder for me. But who knows, maybe I'll save enough for a weekend trip or something!!

I'm watching Star Wars for the first time too! I'm not all the way through them yet, but I plan to be by the time we go.

DO YOU LOVE IT?! I had a migraine going into New Year's Eve, one that just wouldn't go away. I went home just mind-boggled at how my migraine meds were not helping. At some point, I just gave up. I figured if I was going to be in that much pain, I might as well watch Star Wars. We figured out that my migraine was due to a sinus infection. Blegh. But I did end up watching all of them. (We started with the prequels into the originals and then the seventh.) You'll have to tell me what you think of them. I just love all of the movies so much. Like said, I wanted to be Rey for Halloween, but my body shape is not going to rock that costume. I'll figure something else out. (I could be an Ewok. :()

Yes! I've been trying to do that. (I don't usually get in the 1 a day I want to, but on my days off sometimes I watch more than 1). I don't even need to re-watch the Harry Potter ones since I do that constantly already. :rotfl:

I feel like that also helps when it's time for the shows in the parks and what not. Or meeting characters. I remember the basic plot of all of the Disney movies, but rewatching as an adult is also fun for the jokes that were missed as a child. It's a nice way of counting down the days and having something to look forward to.

40 DAYS. Excited, migraining, tired. But I'm planning to have something every weekend that helps the weekend go by a little faster, because once Monday's done, the week usually goes by fairly quickly for me.

I actually try not to do too much hopping all over the parks too. (It didn't work some days like when we did Halloween Horror Nights because we kept circling the whole park). But I'm so not used to heat. It's been awful here so I've been inside mainly :rotfl: But ADRs are good for getting out of the sun. The only thing that was so hot I would never do it again was the daytime parade Fastpass spot.

Work will probably be the end of me. I keep looking to find something else that pays a living wage. But there are benefits to the job I have now. I have to look around for jobs too. Mine is very close to my house but doesn't pay well and I'm not using my degree at all. Most days I don't mind it. I do like having free time to read, plan Disney trips, etc. But sitting there can be soo boring. I don't like thinking of going back to work after vacations, and it's hard not knowing when the next one will be. It took me a couple months to adjust to working full time and I still don't like it :crazy2:

I've only seen one so far and I thought it kind of dragged on too long. I've been told a lot of people don't like the prequels though. It's interesting I'm just not sure if I'll love it. But I'll let you know when we finish them!

I feel like that also helps when it's time for the shows in the parks and what not. Or meeting characters. Me too! Last year I had some very awkward conversations with the princesses as in I didn't know what to say at all. :rotfl2: I'm hoping if I watch the movies again I'll come up with something related to their movie to say during meet and greets. There's also some I haven't watched since I was really young so I don't remember the movie.

My weeks are Sunday-Thursday. But once Tuesday is done the whole work week is almost over.

First of all, as an Italian and someone who should walk/exercise WAY more than I do (which is not at all), let me say you cannot POSSIBLY start a diet of any sort the week before something called "Little Italy Days". That would be blasphemous. Will there be breads? Will there be pasta? Then you must EAT the breads and pasta!!!
Seriously, I always try to lose a little before Disney and rarely succeed. I'm much older than you and I think my days of easily losing a few lbs. quick are over  But I will say most people don't gain what they think they will in Disney, if they gain at all. You walk so much, more than you realize. Plus you're going when it'll still be warm and most people - not me, mind you - eat less when it's hot. I eat the same regardless of weather :rotfl2:So while I applaud trying to get healthier before your trip don't beat yourself up over it or let it ruin your fun!

Walking on the other hand with or without the weight loss is a good idea before a trip to WDW. Unfortunately it's been so disgustingly hot and humid by me the last month or so that even walking at 8:00 in the morning is out for me. And if we're not running to basketball at night it's still too gross at 7-8:00. So forget walking before my upcoming trip in TWO WEEKS :cheer2: but maybe I'll be able to do a good deal of walking before our Nov. trip once the weather cools down. I really should walk in this heat because it's not going to be any better in Florida at the end of this month!

I know, I know. We actually ended up waiting (totally on accident) to start eating healthier again. We went to the festival today. It was honestly not what I was hoping for it to be. I went with my dad and while I love him SO MUCH, he is just the absolute WORST with festivals. When I first got there, I wanted to try different foods. But he was obsessed with free samples (pretzels, candy, Goldbond powder??) and educating himself about real vs not real olive oil. Then he HAD to have alcohol. He kept going to tent to tent looking at everything that WASN'T Italian food. By the time he settled down, I was so hot and my migraine had gotten worse and worse, so I didn't even eat anything down there. I managed to spend $40 on things I'm intending to share. So I brought home pasta and sfogliatelle, but I did not eat ANYTHING there. (Though when we first got there, I honestly wanted funnel cake, fries, and many many pastries. I was very disappointed. I'm contemplating making my mom take me downtown tomorrow.)

The 'experts' talk about metabolisms slowing down, but many people on MyFitnessPal and the like lose great amounts of weight at all ages. So I think it's just a matter of finding what combination of exercise and food works for each individual person. When I first lost weight, I lost almost 60 pounds because I really wanted a dog. I gave up sugar, potatoes, pork, and beef. I exercised several hours each day. I REALLY wanted a dog of my own, so I worked really hard. This time, I have a dog and the 'prize' for hitting my goal isn't as big of an incentive. And honestly, I was spending SO MUCH time looking at the food for my ADRs that my brain just had no interest in eating healthy food when I was considering what I would be eating in Disney. I honestly wasted several months of great weather. But oh well. I'm looking for a new job that allows me to get up and walk during the day (rather than being tethered to a cubicle) so I anticipate Disney being a great kicking off point. All that walking! (And apparently, I'm not hungry at ALL when I'm hot. ;)

Walking on the other hand with or without the weight loss is a good idea before a trip to WDW.

I was trying to work myself up to how many miles I would be walking at the park so my feet don't ache the whole time I'm there. But I keep working overtime hours (and getting up at 6am is just so hard D: to go for a walk). So getting over 5 miles a day is just impossible. We're basically all hills here. So I think I'll be fine on the flat of Disney. I just will need to take OTC tylenol/ibuprofen/excedrin. I'm more nervous about my migraines and not having enough migraine meds than I am anything. I only have three pills left and I needed TWO this week. I have 33 days until Disney. I can get 18 more pills for the trip, but I honestly want to have at least 12 pills for the 10 days we'll be there. So I'm crossing my fingers that I'll only need seven pills in the upcoming month.

TELLING THE REST OF THE FAMILY

So, you guys know that I'm taking my mom to Universal and Disney World, but the rest of my family does not. Here are some reasons!

My dad got to go to Disney with me last time! He doesn't work full time anyway, so I feel like my mom's more deserving of the trip anyway, since I'm paying for it.

My sister has taken several trips of her own (though not to Disney). She and I love each other VERY much. But we are just polar opposites. :( When I say left, she says right just because she doesn't want to do the same thing as me. She is very temperamental. Sometimes she's happy and we have a GREAT time. And sometimes she's just automatically angry and there's nothing I can do to lift her mood.

When mom and I decided to go to Disney (last June), we didn't want to tell them until we HAD to. We've been working without a break for over a year now. I have taken only 2.5 days off since I started. One was for our family reunion (which I did more work for than enjoyed) and the other 1.5 days were because my mom was really sick last year due to gallbladder problems. Otherwise, I've haven't taken any days off of work. So coming right out of college into a hardcore job thing is really difficult!!!

I feel like Disney is my reward for successfully adulting. (Or well, trying to.) I have my student loans in repayment programs. I bought a car and have my payments come out automatically each month and I haven't missed any. I pay for my cell phone bill. I pay for groceries and whatever other family needs that might require money here and there. I'm very lucky to live at home because my parents pay the mortgage and provide food and etc so I don't have to. (Though I honestly could not live on what I make, so I'm even more lucky.)

My mom works at a job where she's supposed to make commission. But the job is set up for her to fail. So even though she works endlessly, the company makes a ton of money and she makes even less than I do. (We're both looking for other jobs.) But she's so tired, I just feel like she deserves an AMAZING vacation.

But anyway: while I love my dad and my sister, I didn't want them to do the 'why are you only taking mom' thing. So I told them that I was going on a vacation with my best friend, Gina. I talked to my friend and she agreed to participate, since my sister works with us. And it's worked so far. (Though they're both concerned she's going to drop out of the trip, which is really funny. She breaks plans a lot.) On Tuesday, we're going to dinner and she's going to 'let me down easy'. On Wednesday, I'll explain that she backed out and I needed a replacement. So I asked mom. And that's going to be that.

And then I'll FINALLY be able to talk to my mom about the trip. 33 days!!!! I'm SO EXCITED. But now I'm starting to panic because I need to get clothes and a swimsuit and buy little things like OTC meds and bandaids and etc. I'm trying to get my room clean so that when I come back, I don't weep at the state of my bedroom. I'm honestly so tired of work, but it's going to be time to leave before I know it!

I still have to come up with a halloween costume for the party, but I have no idea what to choose! Forgive me, but I don't want to dress like a princess because my size just won't allow for anything but snickering from fellow guests. So I'm trying to figure something out that I WANT to be and will make sense. :( So far, I have no ideas. I'm contemplating just...not dressing up. It's terrible.

Are any of you doing the MNSSHP? Did you dress up?

I'm more nervous about my migraines and not having enough migraine meds than I am anything. I only have three pills left and I needed TWO this week.

Oh no you get migraines too! My boyfriend gets terrible ones, and so far they haven't found any medicine that works 100% of the time. They just switched him from one that was kind of working (but they stopped making it or something) to a pill that shortens them sometimes but the last 3 days he's had them constantly. (Summer is usually the worst but I think with the medicine he's had a little less than usual this year). Luckily the Florida seems to agree with him a little more he got 1 and it was a lot shorter than his typical migraines in the whole 12 days we were there.

We've been working without a break for over a year now.

Tell me about it :sad2:

I feel like Disney is my reward for successfully adulting. (Or well, trying to.) I have my student loans in repayment programs. I bought a car and have my payments come out automatically each month and I haven't missed any. I pay for my cell phone bill. Exactly! Although I had credit cards to pay from buying trip stuff too :rotfl:

On Wednesday, I'll explain that she backed out and I needed a replacement. So I asked mom. And that's going to be that.

Smooth :cool1:

But now I'm starting to panic because I need to get clothes and a swimsuit and buy little things like OTC meds and bandaids and etc.

Swimsuit shopping is the worst they all fit so differently  it's so confusing. Last year I thought I had ones that fit, but when we got there most of the tops didn't fit right. (I did pack too many though so I had at least one that worked). This year I'll try them on (again) before I leave. We did the bandaid, travel size stuff trip a couple weeks ago :rotfl:

I'm honestly so tired of work, but it's going to be time to leave before I know it!

I know it's so close but it feels like foreverrrr. Can I just be there now?

I still have to come up with a halloween costume for the party, but I have no idea what to choose! Forgive me, but I don't want to dress like a princess because my size just won't allow for anything but snickering from fellow guests. So I'm trying to figure something out that I WANT to be and will make sense. :( So far, I have no ideas. I'm contemplating just...not dressing up. It's terrible.

It's way too hot to dress up as a princess. :crazy2: We don't dress up either if it makes you feel better!

Are any of you doing the MNSSHP? Did you dress up?

You could do what we do which is get like a themed tshirt or kind of a Disneybound. Last year I wore Minnie ears, a polka dotted top and a black skirt, and made Josh stick on some Mickey ears. This year I'm wearing a shirt that says Boo To You Happy Halloween with some Halloween ears, and I got Josh a Haunted Mansion shirt.

There's a First Time for Everything - A September 2016 Pre-Trip Report
When I last went to Disney, I had just graduated from college, so the hardest part of my day was figuring out what I was going to do all summer last time I went. This time, I'm counting down to Disney, not only because I'm obsessed, but because I NEED A VACATION. Adulting is just not for me, guys. Let's run away to Neverland, okay? I think we can hold off Captain Hook? :confused3

[This is a picture of me on a Monday shouldering the week's work of responsibility.]

This is so me, it's not even funny. :lmao:I totally hear you, adulting just isn't for me either. It looks like you and your mom are going to have an AWESOME trip!

PLANNING THE TRIP

uFoRYWR.jpg

[We will start our trip here and end at Disney!]

Despite making plans a year and a half in advance, we didn't officially commit financially to this trip until the end of March 2016, so I actually started making payments in April. I originally had a really reasonable payment plan in place (basically $300 per paycheck or something financially responsible). But once it hit April, I realized I had NO time left. So now the payments are a lot more than I'd originally intended. I wanted to splurge on this trip, so let's get into the actual details!!

We're going down in LATE September to early October. We have a three night reservation at the Royal Pacific Resort at Universal Studios Orlando. We are flying in around 7pm on a Thursday and picking up the rental car. We were going to do the shuttle so we didn't have to pay for parking, but the rental makes more sense. I decided last minute (basically a day ago) to add an extra day to our Universal stay. I figured it made more sense than dragging my 56 year old mother through the park for only one day. It's hard to fit EVERYTHING into one day. That way we can enjoy the resort, since I opted for a 'deluxe' resort instead of staying off-site or for a 'value' resort.

On Sunday, we're checking out to move over to Disney. (YAAAY!!) We're checking into the Animal Kingdom Lodge!! Originally, I wanted to stay at the Wilderness Lodge. I was waiting for the free dining to drop, but I didn't get the offer I wanted. :( So after, you know, days of panicking, I decided maybe we would rent DVC points and just stay at Old Key West. For the days I was going to stay, it was like $800 altogether for six nights. (Which is a steal for a deluxe, IMO.) But I really like mousekeeping and the little Disney soaps (that I collect, but rarely use.) So I flip-flopped into a Port Orleans French Quarter reservation.

AND THEN. I was double-checking on the Wilderness Lodge again? And I saw an offer for free dining with the Animal Kingdom Lodge!! I actually did the math, crunched those numbers, and it made more sense to do free dining than a room discount with the AKL. For only $200 more, from POFQ, we could stay at a Disney Deluxe hotel. Yes, please!

So now we're staying from Sunday to Saturday at the AKL, standard view (though I'm hoping to upgrade when we get there depending on how funds go), with park hoppers and passes to MNSSHP for Thursday night.

Right now, I'm deciding where we're going to eat when we're over at Universal, since that's three nights of food to figure out, but I think the choices are harder over there than with Disney. I'm a devout follower of DisneyFoodBlog, so I feel like I know what I'm getting with Disney.

OMG, AKL is my favorite resort! :cloud9: (Well, it's tied with Beach Club, but still, it's in the top slot. :thumbsup2) It's AMAZING, you're going to love it!!!!

And MNSSHP is so awesome, there just aren't enough words. Make sure to see the Boo to You parade, even if you're not a parade fan normally. And HalloWishes is can't miss. The entire feeling of the park is amazing at the party, we can't get enough.

UNIVERSAL STUDIOS

I am the nerd of the family. It comes from the nurturing culture that comes with being obsessed with things like Harry Potter, Disney movies, and superheroes. I have only recently been introduced to Jurassic Park and Star Wars. So I definitely was NOT going to miss seeing Hogsmeade in Universal last time I went to Orlando, FL. If I saw ANYTHING, it was going to be Hogsmeade.

The bittersweet part of seeing Hogsmeade in 2014 is that I missed the grand opening of Diagon Alley by ONE DAY. I was SO CLOSE. We kept hoping for a soft opening, but they were filming with NBC or whatever, so there were zero opportunities to get inside. We did just about everything else in the park (JK, we did basically nothing). So THIS time, I'm planning to ride just about everything.

Here's the breakdown.

THURSDAY

Fly down to Orlando on the 5:10pm flight from Pittsburgh International. Pick up the rental car from Alamo. They were running a deal where you get a free upgrade if you choose within certain categories. My only problem with the rental car is that I want the points for my Southwest account, but I have no desire to drive the car. (That's where my mom comes in.) But since it's my name, my credit card, I'm not sure if we can have mom be the person that drives unless it's in her name. If it's in her name, can I still get the Southwest points?

These are the hard hitting questions, you know.

I anticipate touching down around 7:30pm and getting to the rental car kiosk by 8:30pm. We'll drive to the hotel, get checked in, and probably crash. I mean, we'll probably either pick some kind of food up on the way to the hotel or we'll buy something from a quick-service (if applicable) at the Royal Pacific Resort.

Then we'll 'unpack' and sleep.

FRIDAY

Since we have early morning entry and unlimited express passes, the plan was to get up early to beat the heat and go to whichever Harry Potter park is open first. Since Universal Studios closes at 5:00pm for the Haunted Horror Nights or whatever it's called, the plan is to do the majority of our time there (to make sure we've ridden everything) and then switch over to Islands of Adventure.

Since we'll be staying on property, we can definitely take a break if the sun is too much. I anticipate Mom will want time at the pool and out of the sun. That's why we have two day passes instead of one day passes. We don't have to try to fit EVERYTHING into one day anymore.

I'll most likely buy my interactive wand on Friday to maximize the amount of time I have to use it. It would be cool to get picked at Ollivander's, but I also have social anxiety, so having that kind of attention would stress me out, too. That's a double-edged sword.

Here's where I'm stuck. I would REALLY like to eat at Mythos, because it looks like SUCH a neat restaurant. But I was looking at the menu and it just didn't look appealing at ALL. I mean, it really seemed overpriced for what I would pick. And I would hate to spend money just to see what the restaurant looks like on the inside. So we're probably going to pass on Mythos.

I was also really torn on eating at the Leaky Cauldron or the Three Broomsticks, because I heard that the food just isn't good. So we were contemplating getting a snack or fish and chips or something to actually check out the restaurants, but not waste a bunch of money on sub-par food. (Food is kind of the objective this trip. I love to eat, as evidenced by my waistline, but I hate to spend money on food that just isn't good.)

I was thinking, originally, about doing Jake's or Mama Della's for dinner. BUT. If we have the rental car, I'm now thinking that we'll go to Disney Springs, since the parks shut down early, and do dinner at Raglan Road (or one of the other restaurants). If we eat at Raglan Road, which I loved, then I can add another Disney restaurant to my list later in our trip.

SATURDAY

Since we will have done just about everything the day before, I'm contemplating having Mom and I go over to Kona Cafe for breakfast instead of going early for the park opening. I really wanted to eat at Kona, because I heard the reviews are amazing, but there's nowhere to fit it later in the trip. If we go to Kona on Saturday morning, we can go super early and still make it back for regular park opening. Those express passes will save us from waiting in long lines, with the exception of the Harry Potter rides.

(I have no interest in Kong. So that's not an issue either.)

I figure we'll end up re-riding things and hitting whatever we missed the day before. This is an opportunity to hit whichever other Harry Potter restaurant we didn't visit the day before. And then I figured we'd take advantage of a restaurant on property for dinner, since again, the parks close early.

We'll most likely play mini golf Saturday night. The parks close at 7PM that night, I believe, so unless we're dog tired (and I doubt that we will be), we'll eat and then golf. I heard that the mini golf is just a fantastic amount of fun. And I think it would be a nice way to end our trip!

For those of you counting down with me, do you have recommendations concerning the food portion of our trip? Do you have favorite rides that we shouldn't miss? Do you have tips concerning Universal? I went once when I was a little kid (before Islands of Adventure was even there, apparently, and my mom hasn't been back). I went most recently with my dad, but we skipped all of the roller coasters except for the Dueling Dragons. We somehow still got 25,000 steps!

I stopped at the one bakery, Croissant Moon Bakery, but the napoleon I had there was very meh. It definitely wasn't worth the price we paid for it. We also went to Antojito's, which was pretty good, for lunch. But I think since we're eating Mexican food later in the trip, it might be good to eat something we're not going to be eating later.

I looked into Cowfish, but my mom won't eat fish, so that just seems like a miss for us.

Other than than that, that's my plan for Universal!

I'm a fellow nerd, and I'm so jealous about Universal! We still haven't made it over there yet. I'm DYING to see Harry Potter land.

Your ADRs look good! A very nice mix of places. Honestly, I would probably eat at Boma like 4x if I had Deluxe Dining, but that's just me. :rotfl: Sneak down to the cafeteria and buy zebra domes. You're going to want a ton of them. :cool1: Sanaa is on my AKL wish list for next time, I've heard it's amazing.

Girl, I hear you about the losing weight thing. I've been trying to lose too, and I'm just stuck. I'm not gaining anything (which is good), but I've been working my butt off and not losing weight. I have a sedentary job like you so it makes it difficult. :sad2:

TELLING THE REST OF THE FAMILY

So, you guys know that I'm taking my mom to Universal and Disney World, but the rest of my family does not. Here are some reasons!

My dad got to go to Disney with me last time! He doesn't work full time anyway, so I feel like my mom's more deserving of the trip anyway, since I'm paying for it.

My sister has taken several trips of her own (though not to Disney). She and I love each other VERY much.

Forgive me, but I don't want to dress like a princess because my size just won'tI allow for anything but snickering from fellow guests. So I'm trying to figure something out that I WANT to be and will make sense. :( So far, I have no ideas. I'm contemplating just...not dressing up. It's terrible.

Are any of you doing the MNSSHP? Did you dress up?

We're doing the MNSSHP again this year. We usually don't dress up, per se, but we usually wear Halloween shirts (or orange and black or something) and a pair of ears or our tiaras or something. I'm looking at buying a bunch of pairs of Minnie ears for our trip, so I think I will wear a pair of those, and I found a "I'm Celebrating" pin on Etsy that has the witches from Hocus Pocus on it so I'll definitely be wearing that. I'm going to buy my mom and my aunt ones that say Boo to You and have Mickey on them. :thumbsup2 I would say about 1/2 of the adults dress up. You definitely won't feel out of place if you don't dress up. And honestly, we've been to the party several times, and people of all sizes are wearing costumes and the guests are all really complimentary of one another. I've never seen anyone sneer at someone's costume, only tell them how awesome they look. Everyone is so excited to be trick-or-treating like kids again, it's just pure joy. :goodvibes

Can't wait to read more! You're getting so close! :cool1:

We've been to MNSSHP 4x and DH and I have never dressed up - we're no fun lol. I have worn a Disney-themed Halloween shirt every year though, and our kids dressed up 3 of the 4 times. Believe me there are PLENTY of people who don't dress up for the party! There are also plenty of people who just wear a Disney shirt or a Halloween shirt; if you do either you won't feel out of place. Whatever you do though keep in mind it'll be hot. Two of our parties were early-ish Oct. and it was pretty damn hot still. I'm following another PTR and the mom is wearing a Cinderella t (I think from the Disney store?), a blue tulle tutu she made herself, and black leggings. She may have some type of ears, too. Very simple but it looks nice. Seriously though if you don't come up with something or don't find something you're comfortable in, find yourself a t shirt you like! I think the Disney store online even has their Halloween stuff now :)

Ugh, I feel for you with the migraines :headache: I've been getting them for 17 years, started when I was 28. Thank God the meds I'm on now work well as long as I take a pill as soon as I feel my "aura" starting. I also started seeing a new chiropractor in June, she's a different type of chiropractor who doesn't use manipulation but rather focuses on the atlas orthogonal. I know it sounds weird!! I was so skeptical at first but besides helping me with a bad hip issue I was having, the frequency of my migraines has been GREATLY reduced since seeing her! I get 27 pills a month and July was the first month ever that I didn't use them all.......

Oh, yes. My life is basically just one big migraine. A lot of it is more 'tension' because my hair is super long and super curly, so it just curls into itself. And at some point, I give up trying to brush it, so it turns into a mat. And then I have to brush it out. But until then, I sleep in a bun and the buns cause tension in my neck, so I get migraines. Has your boyfriend tried Ritzatriptan? It's basically the ONLY thing that helps mine. About an hour after I take it, all of the pain is gone, I'm just really tired. I've learned to function with mine, so I still go to work and drive and etc, but that pain is like nothing else.

We've been counting down the weeks, so I made 'week five' a 'get-all-the-clothes-I-need' week. I have spent $200 on new clothes and I'm not a happy camper about it. (Mostly because I've been 'eating healthy' since February and I haven't changed, but also because that's $200 I could be spending at Disney.) I did buy the first swimsuit I tried on, but mostly because it fit and I was tired. I really hope it doesn't fit the next time I go somewhere, because that'll mean I'll have lost weight! :D

I know it's so close but it feels like foreverrrr. Can I just be there now?

You're just about two weeks out now, aren't you? I think you get there the week before I leave and leave the day I get there! (But yes! Just go now! I won't tell anyone...)

It's way too hot to dress up as a princess. :crazy2: We don't dress up either if it makes you feel better!

My mom has effectively convinced me that it's going to be super cold down there. So I was leaning more toward the skirt thing, but I think I have it figured out now! I have the Minnie Mouse ears. So I might just find a red skirt (hopefully with polka dots) and wear a black shirt with the ears. Then I'll be Minnie Mouse. IDK. It seems easier than running around all over the internet trying to find something size-friendly. NEXT time I go, I'm going to be Rey! I'll have the pictures to prove it!

This is so me, it's not even funny. :lmao:I totally hear you, adulting just isn't for me either. It looks like you and your mom are going to have an AWESOME trip!

I sure hope so! It's been a very long time to wait and a lot of planning. I think I've put so many expectations on this trip that if it's not what I'm hoping it'll be, I don't know what I'll do. My dad and I went at the end of June, when it was super busy, and they said that September ISN'T busy, so while I don't expect the parks to be dead, I do expect them to be a little more reasonable. I couldn't get a FP+ for the Seven Dwarves Mine Train on our first day, so I was pretty bummed. I wanted to take her on that, but I really don't want to wait an HOUR for it.

Yay!! AKL looks BEAUTIFUL!! I'm hoping that it's as amazing as the pictures. I was TRYING to get into the Beach Club because OMG THAT POOL, but I couldn't justify the cost... I'm going to see about upgrading to a Savannah View when we get there. But I don't know if it's worth the cost if we're not in the room that often.

And as for MNSSHP, I'm SO excited. It looks like there's a lot less people in September than October. And I'm excited for all the different things to eat and see. I can't wait for the parades! I was told the second parade is much less crowded. And I definitely don't plan to miss HalloWishes!!!

I'm a fellow nerd, and I'm so jealous about Universal! We still haven't made it over there yet. I'm DYING to see Harry Potter land.

I didn't enjoy the food at Universal, but I LOOOOVED the parks!! The rides have more thrill, I think. But Hogsmeade was BEAUTIFUL. The rides were so much fun. I can't wait to go back and have more time to do things! You should DEFINITELY go. The longer you stay, the cheaper it is!

I don't think you'd need Deluxe Dining for Boma!! It's really reasonable comparatively!! And yessss. We're going to eat Zebra Domes!! I love them! And we're going to hit Sanaa after we go to our food demo! I just want to try the bread...

Girl, I hear you about the losing weight thing. I've been trying to lose too, and I'm just stuck. I'm not gaining anything (which is good), but I've been working my butt off and not losing weight. I have a sedentary job like you so it makes it difficult. :sad2:

Sigh. I spend so much time looking at food online that when it's time for dinner, I'm just SO HUNGRY that I eat too much. I've upped my water consumption to 4 liters a day, which is better than it was. But I have no idea how to lose weight (with exercise) while adhered to a computer/headset all day. By the time I get home, I'm so tired I just can't walk around the neighborhood. If anything, I'm hoping the parks'll be a nice jolt to my exercise regime.

:cool1:

Aww!!! That pin sounds SO cool!! (I haven't seen Hocus Pocus the whole way through. Maybe I'll do that before my trip!) I feel like I really WANT to dress up, but I'm going to do more Disneybounding than actually dressing up. I don't know that I'll trick-or-treat, but definitely riding rides and watching the parades/HalloWishes!!

And thanks! We're officially 23 days out!!!!

I think it's less feeling out of place and more that I really WANTED to dress up. It seems like it would be a lot of fun!!! But I just don't want to be that person that dresses inappropriately size-wise. I actually did find a shirt I like, so I'm thinking of just doing the Minnie Mouse thing! Seems simple. And then NEXT TIME, I'll do something more elaborate!!

Aww. :( I'm so sorry. I don't really get an aura. It just feels like someone's pinching behind my eyeball. And then I take Excedrin. And when THAT doesn't work, I take two more. And then I end up giving in to a migraine pill when it feels like someone's trying to push my eyeball out of its socket. I was seeing a chiropractor last year, but she was $40 a visit WITH insurance. So I'm just kind of ..toughing it out. I think the fact that your chiropractor has helped you so much is GREAT, though!! A lot of people don't realize how valuable chiropractic work can be!!

Aw. :( I'm not sure but I know he's tried a lot of different medicines. His are more related to an accident from when he was a teenager and he got hit by a car. He's had them ever since, but there doesn't appear to be anything visibly wrong or damaged. He was on sumatriptan (I think thats how its spelled) in a nose spray. It was working okay, but thats the one I think they stopped making so they gave itnto him in a pill version. That didn't work as well, and now he's on another pill thats supposed to prevent them. (Not sure what it is). It works okay too, but he still gets them especially when the weather is rainy and its summer.

We've been counting down the weeks, so I made 'week five' a 'get-all-the-clothes-I-need' week. I have spent $200 on new clothes and I'm not a happy camper about it. At least it's clothes for Disney! Though I spent too much on clothes for Disney it's basically the only clothes I buy. Swimsuits I do think are a waste of money though. I had to buy 1-2 because we're going but I hardly swim or wear them (and their expensive) so it feels like such a waste. I also prefer to order them online and it's always hard to tell if the top is big enough online.

You're just about two weeks out now, aren't you? I think you get there the week before I leave and leave the day I get there! (But yes! Just go now! I won't tell anyone...)

Yes! I'll just say "sorry boss someone advised me to go to Disney now I won't be in" :rotfl:

My mom has effectively convinced me that it's going to be super cold down there. So I was leaning more toward the skirt thing, but I think I have it figured out now! I have the Minnie Mouse ears. Super cold? It is the farthest from cold. I did a Minnie Mouse type costume last year that's always easy and cute.

Last Minute Fixes
So, it's been a while since my last post! I cleaned my room. I know, I know. Stereotypical messy kid. BUT. Now that my room is 'clean', I'm feeling better about when I have to come home.

I know, I know! I haven't even left yet!! I'm already thinking about when I come home. :confused3 I can't help it. It's part of the planning. I like to call it 'Brace for impact'. I have warned all my friends that I will be a Grumpy Gus when I get back because it's SO depressing to return home after how much FUN Disney is.

But. I'm thinking that I'm really going to want to come home to be with my dog, who I am so nervous about leaving behind. He sleeps with me in bed at night, so ten days of No Riley might really be pushing it. The longest I've been is one night and I did not do well at all.

My mom's birthday was on September 17th. I got her things she needed for the trip, namely a new phone. I wanted her to be able to use the Disney app and take pictures.

I'm still working on the decorations for her in-room surprise, since noooo way was I going to spend $600 for someone to tape up some decorations. I looked at the 'build a basket' thing, but ONE RICE KRISPY TREAT was $4. Holy pants, batman! I'd rather just buy snacks somewhere down there and sneak some back to the room. I still have to figure out HOW I'm going to get the box I'm shipping without my mom noticing/how I'm going to get my mom to leave the room so I can decorate.

Speaking of decorations, I have been hand-making some really pretty decorations that she has no idea that I have bought. :) I've really tried to make this experience special because I know she makes all of my trips special for me. So I wanted to return that favor.

I bought Minnie Mouse red/white dotted fabric so that we can make a circle skirt. I just have to wash some clothes tonight and actually start packing. Eeugh. I'm EXCITED to pack. But I'm also so not ready for this trip. I want to BE there already. But I also need more time. Does anyone else feel like that? Am I a crazy person?

I keep dreaming about particular rides. I had a dream we were on the Great Movie Ride, but the whole park was vacant. We went in to ride the ride, but there was no sign for the ride. When we got in there, the ride vehicles were different. But I was excited because my Pastor was going to be the guide. IDEK guys. No more weird food before bed.

I have my manicure/pedicure tomorrow (because no one wants to see my ugly toes) and then Wednesday is our last full day here. WAY too much to do. But I'm just going to try not to rush through the next two days and that way I can get things done.

OH YEAH. And we have to make our Mickey Ears. I bought these blank Mickey ears from Target? I thought Mom and I would both make one set of ears. Well, she wants to make ears that have replaceable designs. So we're trying to figure that out.

Well, I'm going to go do laundry and keep making decorations. I'm sorry I've been so quiet. Get ready for my trip report, though! I can't wait to show you guys how all of my hard work has (hopefully) paid off! :)
