The What's For Dinner Thread - August '09(recipe index in OP)

Glynis- Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful news. I agree, you deserve the night off from cooking.

Becky- I think it's supposed to rain all weekend, we were going to go to a harvest fair but I think we'll pass. I think there is a cheese shop from the blue hills, that might be fun if you can't get pictures.

Maria- I hope you enjoy your birthday, I think it's a good idea to go out this weekend instead of tonight- that way you get to prolong the celebration.

Marylyn- Your dinner sounds tasty (minus the cilantro), everything tastes so good in a tortilla.

Nancy- You are way ahead of me with your fall prep, I took a screen out of a window today. I promised myself I won't put any fall decorations out until the house is tidy so I better get a move on it.

I don't usually use my crockpot but I'm trying to branch out- I've only made chili and kept mashed potatoes warm in it. Anyway, I've decided one down side is my house as smelled like garlic and chicken all day. I'm so hungry, I can't wait to eat it. Only two hours until dinnertime.

Buddy has an appointment at the eye Dr for a repeat of a visual field test so I am going with him. I think he is suffering from "falling apart" overload. A few years ago we found out he has Atypical Retinitus Pigmentosa. Atypical because it has not spread, usually this condition cannot be treated except with massive doses of Vitamin A, which only slows it down. By his age people are blind. On his last exam he failed the visual field test so he needs to be retested, the pigment has not spread but the Dr wants to repeat the test and then decide if he needs to go back to Boston. Right about now he has had it with the Dr visits so I want to go and hear what she has to say.

I didn't realize he was facing something like that  Must be terrifying to have your eyesight slowly slip away from you. I hope you hear good news when you go.

Anyway, everyone is finally well now. Long story, but Patrick is the only one who didn't get strep. He tried to fake it by getting his mom to take him to the doctor and it worked with Kenny and I for a couple of days, but we figured it out and sent his fanny back to school.

But the biggie is poor little Hailey. My poor child started her monthly last night. I wasn't expecting it this soon as she isn't 12 until next week. Anyway, she and Kenny were freaking out. I did manage to calm both of them but not without several prayers for deliverance.

I'll check in again when I can.

 to Patrick and  to Hailey. If I could have skipped the ages of 11-14, I would have. It must be terribly challenging and scary for her to deal with things that are hard for all girls at that age.

Aimee- I'm glad Ace is doing so well. My dog is four and loves his crate. We never put him in it anymore and I'd love to put it away (it's pretty big) but he loves going in it on his own.

My Lucy looooooooooves her crate. She has earned freedom during the day but sleeps in it at night. It's her place.

Oh my friends! I am floating on air right now! I cannot even begin to tell you how I feel!!!

:cheer2::cheer2::cheer2: What a great day it is, indeed! Definitely worthy of a chinese food celebration. :cheer2::cheer2:

Looks like I'd better call my Dr. in the AM, my ankle is still swollen, can't have that with WDW right around the corner!

Oh no!! I can't believe it's still swollen :confused3

Today was Christmas in the office - all of our new phones arrived! I was using, what we referred to as a "plastic replica of a phone". I went from a Palm, that died a quick and sudden death, back to a cheapy flipphone until we were able to swing an upgrade (I wasn't eligible). Business manager found a rep willing to keep our business so we ALL got new smartphones. I can't figure it out but it's cool to play with! You should have seen us all ripping into the packages

DH took a sub job today so the grocery shopping didn't get done. This whole stay at home husband thing has perks at times  I may just pick up something so I don't have to shop tonight after work. I'm tired!

#3 iron infusion went fine today - have just one more next week and we'll do labs and see how they are holding. My new meds are still not working, so...

Oh Glynis that is FANTASTIC NEWS! I'm so excited for all of you! Yes a special dinner is definitely called for!

Kathy - I can't believe that your ankle is still swollen and you haven't called the doctor yet! Girl - get to it or I'm gonna come find you!! You go to Disney soon and you need to be in good walking shape!

Having chicken something or others for dinner tonight. :rotfl:

LOVE that description:lmao:

Aimee - I hear ya on the Christmas = new toy (oops, phone)! Glad your latest iron infusion went well, but sorry the new meds aren't working. After all the trouble you went to get the stuff, that must really be frustrating.

Ellen - I'll be happy to send stuff as well if you pm me the address.

Glynis, what wonderful news! I can't imagine how relieved you must be.

Ellen, I'm going to start my care package tomorrow. Thanks for the reminder about the chocolate......that would have been one of the first things I would have put in;)
Is it ok if I give Jay's name to Greg's Legion? They send cards for Christmas.

Greg surprised me at lunch with my Madame M's 20 layer crepe cake.....this year he picked up the vanilla instead of chocolate but just amazing. So much for the diet before F&W.
Dinner will be take out......I'm happily in sweats & a ponytail;)

Ellen Thanks for the info. I'll gathering stuff this weekend.

Glynis This is the best kind of news. I was hoping the rib thing was just nothing. Sometime it takes a well trained eye to see it. Have a great night.

Kathy listen to Lauri and get to the doctor. I thought your ankle was better :sad1:

Nancy  for Buddy. No wonder he doesn't like doctors.

Gretchen Tell Patrick not to play sick. God has an evil sense of humor.;) Poor Hailey I can only imagine how scared she was. I remember me and I thought I was dying my Mom never talked about that stuff. :sad2: I ca only imagine what your house was like last night.

Tonight is library night. It is cold and rainy here and I really don't want to leave the house. I need to browse the slow cooker books so I guess I will pry myself from this house.

Dinner is pizza cause I am also very lazy.

My ankle isn't that bad!!!!! It's hard to explain, it's not the entire ankle, it's a tiny spot on the side next to the achilles(sp?). It's not even that painful, I've been able to go to the gym a few days this week. I am definitely going to the Dr. tomorrow because I need to be 100% in two weeks.:goodvibes

Maria Happy birthday. You are wearing one of my favorite outfits, sweats and my hair in a ponytail.:thumbsup2

Quick checkin here, I've had a headache coming on all day & now it's getting bad. I did a quick read-thru.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARIA!! I can't wait to meet you & give you a birthday hug!

Glynis!!! Woohoo, Yeah, Wow & PTL! :worship: That is wonderful, I am so happy for your family!!!:goodvibes

Gretchen, Hugs for Hailey, Mom & Dad!

Laura, I'm glad Caili is bouncing back!

Nancy, I'm sorry to hear that Buddy is has this vision problem! I'll had him and his health to my prayer list.

Marilyn, I'm sorry for your loss & your friends My Dad was very young (57) I know how that is.

Ellen, Alexis is very excited about our care package "project". She wants to decorate the box & write Jay a letter! :rolleyes1 I asked her if she had any ideas about what we should send. She said " Are there kids fighting in the war? I have lots of ideas for kids, but not so much for a grownup man!" :cutie:

Dinner is leftovers from my lunch & Bob's lunch. I went out with Mom & DD, he went out at work. My head hurts, so that will be easy.

I am not an organized woman so my cleaning takes a weird turn but I am almost done all of my Fall cleaning.

Congratulations! Do you want to start on my house? ;)

Oh my friends! I am floating on air right now!

Glynis, that is fabulous news! I am so happy for you, your dad, and your family.

It is cold, drizzly, cloudy and just plain nasty out today. YUCK!!

The weather is turning here as well. I had to turn my heat on this morning. :sad2:

I mentioned this to Ellen, and I'll tell all of you who are thinking of sending packages to Iraq. Greg highly recommends packaging toiletries and food items separately. The troops have to throw a lot of food from packages out because it tastes like deodorant, baby wipes, etc. Just FYI.

If I could have skipped the ages of 11-14, I would have.

Yeah, there are definitely reasons I would never wish to be a child again. I'm glad your infusion went well, but I am sorry to hear the medication isn't helping. You always sound so cheerful. I would be completely frustrated!

You are wearing one of my favorite outfits, sweats and my hair in a ponytail.:thumbsup2

I consider that my uniform. I do throw on jeans if I am leaving the house, but putting my hair in a ponytail is one of the first things I do in the morning, and taking it out is one of the last things I do at night.

She said " Are there kids fighting in the war? I have lots of ideas for kids, but not so much for a grownup man!"

That is so sweet! I don't know how much interaction Jay has with the Iraqi population, but Greg did request things to hand out to Iraqi children his last tour. He has a picture of a whole group of Iraqis all decked out in Red Sox gear. I hope you feel better!

Gretchen -- How is Hailey doing?

Caili is almost back to her usual self. She just hasn't regained her normal amount of energy. Unfortunately, I think Liam is now getting sick. He has a headache and a scratchy throat, and he was thinking about going to bed at 6:30. Considering he was jumping up and down earlier about the prospect of a math test tomorrow (yes, I know he is strange), I don't think it is a ploy to get out of school.

Aimee – I’m so sorry the meds aren’t working. Good luck and have fun learning your new phone!

Maria – I remember looking at pics of that cake last year, incredible!:thumbsup2

Sheryl – I’m sorry to hear that you have a bad headache, hopefully it will get better as the night goes on and you’ll feel good tomorrow!

Laura – So sorry to hear that Liam is now getting sick, don't know how you do it having two, it was hard when I had Kyle sick.

Kat - that ankle thing is weird :confused3 I'm interested in what the doc says!

Re: my med - I'm not necessarily worse, I'm just not better. Obviously still flaring but they said med could take 3-6 months. As long as I'm mostly eating, I'm not complaining too much. I like my food

I thought of y'all tonight when my momma called to say that Paula Deen was at Animal Kingdom today and she saw her walk past. She and her husband were there, being escorted by a CM of course, but seemed to just be on vacation.

This online dining thing sure is addicting :rolleyes1 I added 'Ohana earlier in the trip.

Good Morning!

Trying to catch up a bit…

Glynis, What wonderful news! I am so glad that all is going to be OK. Hope you enjoyed your Chinese food.

Gretchen, I am sorry that Hailey is dealing with her friend now. It must be so confusing to her. Hugs for all. Xo.

Laura, Glad Caili is feeling better but not too happy that Liam is now feeling better. Wow! So proud of Greg!!! Wishing him the best of luck!

Kathy, my ankles have both been bothering me. It sucks! I hope the swelling goes down soon.

Nancy, Good job on the cleaning! I have to tackle the closets, garage and attic and get the house in tip top shape for showing…UGH! I will continue to keep Buddy in my prayers…keep us posted, please. I love to hear about the wonderful things he will do with Kady. She is truly his princess.

Ann, So glad that Ron got a good report at the dr! Hope all went well with Liam’s shot and that you had a great visit with your cousin.

Robin, Let us know how that check came out…that blog you posted looks interesting. Gotta check it out more.

Ellen, I would love to send Jay a package too! Do you have any pics of your horses? I love horses. Took riding lessons when I was younger (I took the last lesson in FL when I was on the College Program) and my niece is studying to be an equine vet.

Maria, Glad you loved Bruce…let me know if you get tickets for next Friday. That is when I am going. I remember that crepe cake from last year. Greg is such a sweetheart! 14 days until Boma breakfast and Blue Zoo dinner!!!

Marilyn, your Mexican dish sounds really good!

Lauri, are those your furbabies in your avatar? They are so cute!

Janice, How is Alex liking HS? My friend’s son just started HS and when I ask about it, he gets so excited and says he loves it. Andrew will be there before I know it...where did our babies go?

Sheryl, Thank you for my goodies and especially the oil mattifier!!! I will try it and give you my feed back. Anything for this grease slicked Tzone! I love Alexis’ response to the care package. Continued prayers for her full recovery soon. I hope you and Bob are feeling better too.

Aimee, I hope you feel better soon…you have been dealing with this flare up too long. I am glad you got a new phone. Enjoy setting it up. I agree the online reservations is addicting. You reminded me to review all mine to make sure everything is OK.

Hey all!

I think I am pretty much caught up. If I missed something, please forgive me.

I got my hair done yesterday for my trip. foils, color cut AND I got my eyebrows waxed for the first time!!! Why didn't anyone ever make me do that before? It is awesome. I have been neglecting them for a very long time. After every pull...I said, "Let's see what ya got!".

This weekend is going to be a bit busy for me...Gotta clean up the house and start the garage which has about a foot of path through the middle! UGH! Not even a neat path...

I am supposed to go to a walk a thon this Sunday...really do not feel like it but I think I would need to get out by then.

Andrew is going to his Dad's tonight. Dinner for me will be chicken with sundried tomato pesto and spaghetti squash. I have been trying to be good but have been off a bit and have not been to the gym this week!

Have a great day and an awesome weekend all!

party:Happy Belated Birthday Maria!!!!!!!!!!party:

------

I have alot to catch up on from yesterday.

Luke made out great at the Dr. He was so cute. Dr came in and they exchanged HI-5s. The Dr was about to give him the shot, Luke turned his head and studied what was about to happen. He then turns to me and calmly says, "Ouchies Mommy!" That was it not one tear. I was in total shock. The Dr smiled gave him another HI-5 and we were on our way.
So in the car he proceed to tell me, "he likes that Dr, and maybe someday when he grows up he wants to be a Dr. and take care of Emma." So cute, I was so proud of my boy. He is 2 goin gon 20. Hard to believe he will be three this month.

Off to get more coffee so I can read ...BBL

Ann-Awww that little boy of yours is cutie!

Lauren--made my hair appointment for next Friday. We're all gonna look fab at WDW! But you did remind me that I need to attend to my eyebrows soon.

Glynis--Great news!

Aimee--hope the meds start working sooner than later!

Well, this weekend is the big fundraising weekend for Emma's school. They have the school carnival tomorrow during the day, and then at night is the silent/live auction dinner and dance thing. They have some great art projects that the kids have done on the auction block. I really want the christmas one that Emma's class did, but we'll see how much it really goes for. Some of these families at her school have just too much money!

Two weeks from now I'll be on a plane headed to Florida! WooHoo! Okay, time to finish getting Emma ready for school. Happy Friday!

Oh, and WFD is up in the air. After Friday night soccer, we might do pizza. Not sure yet.

Morining Y'all,

It's raining here. :sad1: That's really sad because we have a Big music Fest here this weekend. DH & I were planning on going all 3 days. They'll have an Octoberfest Keg tapping today, CHICAGO playing tomorrow night, The Guess Who on Sunday plus lots more great music & food. So we're really hoping this weather comes through this morning & without any high winds to mess up things.

Ann, Your boy is so sweet and grownup! Thinking about his career at 2! :goodvibes

Laura, I'm sorry Liam's getting it!:sad1: Thanks for the care package tip, I'll ask Ellen!

Well Ellen:laughing:, Does Jay have any interaction with the children in the area?

Aimee, The Dean Boy's have an appearance scheduled at the F&W Fest. I guess the lucky people who booked that, might also get to see thier Mama!
I hope those meds start working soon.

Lauren, Stephanie, I'm getting my hair done next week, so my roots won't frighten any of you!

Maria,Lauren, Charlene & Kathy, I like the wine basket, but I'm worried about giving her a gift that would difficult for her to get home. (packing the glasses) What do you think about a wine stopper collection? If you could find one representing NYC, I'd pick up a fleur de lis one, and we could buy her a Mickey head one. I'd bring bags to put it all together, maybe with a bottle of wine???

Maria, That's sure is a sweet man you have! I know what you mean about pre-Disney dieting. I've been watching it all week, but now we have this Fest here this weekend & I can almost taste the German Beer & other fair goodies.:sad2: I think y'all will definitely be meeting the "Fat Me"!

If the weather gets out of here, dinner will be at the Fair, Prejean's Duck & Andouille Gumbo! It's from a little rest. over in real Cajun Country near Lafayette. We only get it once a year at the fair & when we visit Houston we try to make a stop there. Yuuummo! Rain, rain GO AWAY!!!:wizard:

Aimee – How cool that Paula and her guy were strolling through AK!!! I’m curious about my ankle too, got an appt for later this morning.

Lauren – You crack me up - "Let's see what ya got!"…..:rotfl:

Ann – “Ouchies Mommy” is just too stinking cute! So proud of that big boy!!!:thumbsup2

Steph – I’m calling today to schedule my hair appt for next Friday, we are gonna be one perty group, huh?

Sheryl – The weather is supposed to be pretty good tomorrow, we’ll be at the fest! I think your idea for the gift is great, however, I wouldn’t be able to help you put it together with my tight schedule that day.:guilty:

Y'all wouldn't believe the food line-up at the Gretna Fest, we're gonna have some yummy eats this weekend!

Kyle is coming in for the weekend!!!!:yay: WFD - Chicken gumbo and potato salad!

Glynis, that is fabulous news about your Dad! You must be so relieved.

Dinner last night was baked haddock with cracker crumb topping, baked potatoes, and broccoli. I forgot to take a picture. Not sure what's for dinner tonight. I feel like I might be getting sick, so we will see...

This thread reminds me that I need to get my eyebrows waxed. :rotfl:

Yes it's sounds like once this rain comes through we are going to have a little cooler air again & low humidity! I hope they are correct!

Prejean's Gumbo is going to be Quail-Pheasant Andouille this year! Kat, Don't pass it up, it's awesome. Hopefully we can meet up sometime tomorrow. I know Angelina will be out there too. Will Kyle be going? It be nice for our DH's to meet & I love to meet Kyle too!

No worry's about the gift putting together, I'll handle it. (Well I fit it in somewhere!;))Just depends on if what Maria & our WFD girls want to do.

:lmao:

Serious question about eyebrow waxing... How long to you have to stop tweezing to get an effective eyebrow wax? I've done it before but not often because I get puffy & red, it takes a few days to go away. But I was going to do it for the trip.
