The What's For Dinner Thread - August '09(recipe index in OP)

Sheryl, that soup looks delicious! If it's got bacon is has to be good!
Maria, your furniture is beautiful.
Janice, how can you get a failing grade for a project that's not even complete? I would definitely fight that!
Glynis, good for Katie! Hopefully that will be the end of it.

Dinner tonight is braised short ribs, mashed potatoes and broccoli for John. I will have the potatoes and broccoli, but not the short ribs. I might stop and pick up a piece of salmon.

Becky, If you fix the soup, make extra of the crispy garnishes! and do use the bacon fat, plus the butter! :upsidedow:goodvibes

Morning all!

Maria - Wow! The furniture looks awesome! You do wonderful work!

Aimee  for a rough day.

Laura - I hope Liam sticks it out. I know that kind of frustration, but it will be so worth it if he can see it through. That said, I know he's involved in baseball, and some other activities? Maybe gymnastics is something he could give up and focus his attention elsewhere, especially if he's faking illness to get out of it.

Janice - I seem to remember Matt having several english projects like that - like Glynis said, they took the whole semester and preliminary work was graded. I hope you get things straightened out soon.

Ellen I glad things worked out and that Doug took care of dinner! Have fun tonight!

Laura - The pork roast in the crockpot was meh. Kenny liked it, but I thought it was dry and I didn't care for the flavor. I had to laugh at your comment about the grumblings over different foods. My kids look at a new dish, sigh deeply like they are offended to the core and ask "Have we ever had this before?" Nice to know my children aren't the only ones not impressed by variety. ;)

One huge advantage to the kids being grown and (mostly) gone, is that our cooking habits have changed drastically. Bob loves to get in the kitchen and try all kinds of new and challenging dishes.

Afternoon friends--
It was 34 here this morning and snowing...it is still snowing, but thank goodness melting when it hits the ground....I hate the snow...I'm still wearing flip flops, lol.

Ok I've lost my train of thought...the phone has rang 4x since I started, and Ross has a house full of boys who went on the trampoline in the snow realized it was cold and wet, who are now rummaging in the fridge and playing poker with sweet tarts for money.....My Goodness, lol.

Supper is a Yo-Yo night!! My antibiotics are making my stomach not friendly, so I have no interest in cooking.

eeww - thats awfully cold! And a houseful of wet hungry boys. I hope you are feeling better today.

My house smells wonderful right now! I'm trying a new soup, sweet potato-leek! The recipe started with frying bacon!! :lovestruc I'll let y'all know how it turns out. I'm stilling feeling funky but going stir crazy & all of the laundry is done! Cleaning is too hard, so nothing else to do but cook. :goodvibes

Laurie, You're going to start on your binder already! Man I feel like a slacker! ;):thumbsup2

That soup sounds yummy. Yea - I'm driving Bob crazy already with questions and ideas.

Again Good Morning,
Thanks for all the b-day wishes for Bob, I'll tell him all my ax murdering friends wished him a good one!

I'm trying to figure out how to fill Bob's request for beans & not be bored cooking it! I stayed awake planning putting them to soak but still haven't figured out which kind or how I'm doing them.

axe murderering friends :rotfl2::rotfl2: Good luck figuring out his birthday dinner.

Dinner last night went well. It looks like they are going to hire Alan to do one project and if they like it, it could lead to more! Fingers crossed!!!

Katie has been dealing with a real bully at school lately. She finally told us about it this morning. One of the girls in her orchestra class found out who Katie is crushing on, and told Katie she'd tell him unless Katie paid her in candy bars. She was all set to "pay" the blackmail, until we explained that if she did, it wouldn't stop. I asked if she wanted me to handle this for her, but she wanted to do it on her own. The girl confronted Katie today, and Katie stood up to her. She told the girl that she was not going to pay her the candy, and if she wanted to tell the boy, to go ahead and do it, it would not bother Katie at all! The girl backed off, apologized, and left Katie alone. I'm so proud of her! I will be watching this closely, though, and so is the orchestra teacher!

Great news about the job. Fingers crossed that it all goes well. And Jeez! Bullies- good for Katie for standing up for herself. I'm glad she told you about it and I hope it ends here.

I found out yesterday on the way home that our Friday night dinner has been moved to Saturday night. Since we were stopping at the grocery to pick up last night's dinner I also picked up something for tonight. We had a rotisseire chicken with baked beans and cornbread last night. For tonight, I picked up a couple of filets and asparagus, and we'll add the mashed potatoes that came with the chicken dinner.

Aimee - I understand you on the baby thing. I was desperate to give my parents their first grandchild, but it just didn't happen. Alan and I tried for 7 years before we found an infertility specialist. In those 7 years, my sister had 2 children, and I taught at a high school where the teen pregnancy rate was the highest in the nation! Add to that, the fact that the school chose me to be the advisor for the New Mothers (a program designed to keep teenage mothers in school), and I spent many days in tears! What I learned through it all is that God was teaching me about patience, and that it ultimately didn't matter which sibling had the first child. All children, when they are wanted, are loved dearly. It will happen for you, my friend, just take the plunge and do it! Like I told my brother, "If you wait for you and your wife to be able to afford children, you'll never have them. You just have to have faith that it will all work out."

Glynis, great advice to Aimee. I totally agree with the advice you gave you DB. "If you wait for you and your wife to be able to afford children, you'll never have them. You just have to have faith that it will all work out."

Interestingly, my BFF said the same thing when I cried to her. She said that maybe DH will get ready if he has a 9 month deadline ;) I don't want to trick him into anything, but I do wonder if there is some truth to that.

I have another retreat this weekend... and another next weekend... I'm tired from retreating! This one is a women's retreat, they are supposed to bring their favorite project to just work on and fellowship. Scrapbooking, sewing, painting, etc. I'm bringing myself and the 2 books I'm supposed to read before next weekend's retreat

I am meeting a colleague for mexican food prior to shopping for retreat food - we have to go early, so it'll just happen to be happy hour ;) DH is on his own until I'm back tomorrow.

Janice, what is up with that teacher? She has major issues:mad:

Glynis, you must be so proud of your girl! Just great that she was able to "handle" the problem by herself. Shame on that BULLY!

Nan, I put some pumpkin soup in the freezer for you. Wine bottle collecting continues.
I tried that bottle of "Frey" wine last night. Really delicious, organic & no added sulfites!

Ellen, have fun tonight at the vineyard. Have you heard from Jay?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BOB!!!!:yay::banana::yay:

Just flying by ........wanted to wish Bob a very Happy Birthday from Johnny & I!!

happy-birthday-1.jpg

Holy Smokes Ladies! You are one chatty bunch!!!!!!!!!!!!
I did not take notes either so here goes!

Happy Birthday Bob!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sheryl- that spicy Cajun will eat anything you cook! He loves your cooking!

Glynis- Hooray for Katie! She has learned and practiced a lesson that some folks never learn. I am so proud of her.
Congrats to Alan as well. I am so happy that he got the job!

Laura- I also was thinking that Liam may be too tall for gymnastics. Maybe it is harder for him because of his height. I remember hearing that Kady was built for gymnastics because she was short and compact.

Maria- So the soup was good! Your furniture is like works of art. So pretty!

Aimee- there is a lot of truth to what the others are saying about waiting to be able to afford a family which is not to say that folks should just jump in if they are really not in a position to support that little life. But there will always be another expense that you want to take care of or one more year of saving. Somehow when you need the money it is always there, whether it comes from changed spending habits or an increased sense of urgency when job changes are needed. Buddy told me that a family is a motivation that he cannot explain. The year that Marisa and Jeff and Kady moved in with us we were going to renovate our home and enlarge it. That was the year that I had had it up to HERE with my job and quit. I was sick whe the job I applied for fell through but somehow it all worked out, we had the money for the house, I was home to oversee it and then I got Kady. Jeff was able to go back to work once she had me to care for her. They would never entrust her to anyone else so this worked out. When you and your DH are ready to begin your family you both will know it and finances will only play a part in your decision. :grouphug:

I give up, my brain is mush so sending hugs to the rest of my friends! :grouphug:

I am not cooking tonight. I want to go to the movies with Marisa so Buddy can have tuna sandwiches. I hope that Kady is invited to her friends so that we can go. Buddy is doing yardwork so I think Kady will be bored here.:thumbsup2

:flower3:Happy Birthday Bob!!!!!!:flower3:

Glynis, Katie is one strong well raised girl! :cheer2: Hooray for her, and Mom & Dad!

Nancy, Ron will be joining Buddy doing yard work this weekend. Our oaks have just blanketed our yard. My poor guy worked all day last Saturday, and by the time he was done there were just as many leaves again.
:headache:

-----------

went to my parents for lunch...I am so stuffed. We had mussels, greek salads, baked haddock with creamed peas, and baked potatoes. She also made tapioca for dessert. So glad I passed on the potato because I needed to be rolled out of there after. My DB and I were laughing how we never want supper on Fridays after eating there for lunch.

We will have a late dinner tonight. I am going to treat myself to some cheap wine. Arbor Mist Orchard fruit...it is a chardonnay with a hint of apple.

Luke just dropped one of this metal Thomas trains on my toes...talk about pain! :scared1: It brought me to tears.

I wasn't even there and I'm :rotfl:

Wish Bob a Happy Birthday for me!

I will show him all the Happy Birthday Wishes when he gets home. He went get plugged in this afternoon instead of tomorrow;)!

Nancy, I'm sure he will enjoy dinner, most of it started with pork fat!

I ended up fixing what I guess you'd call a deconstructed cassoulet. I cooked white & navy beans with pancetta & pork tasso, white wine, tomatoes & tons of herbs. That's in the oven now, with a topping of bread crumbs. I braised lamb shoulder chops (browned in bacon fat) with tomatoes, red wine & rosemary. Did a chocolate creme brulee (without the carmelized sugar because he doesn't like it) and poached pears & cherries in port. Should be a yummy dinner! One that will likely give me a stomach ache but make DH very happy.

Sheryl... I M P R E S S I V E !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :thumbsup2 I think you and Becky are heading for a WFD cook off soon! :lmao: Sounds so darn good.

DH is on-call and working late. I just fried my veal cutlets while Emma is taking a nap. They taste great now, they better not dry out holding for dinner.

Laura if you are going to use flank steak how about a satay with a peanut sauce.

That's what I am going to make! Thanks for the idea. Although I think I am going to pre-dip the satay. With all the illnesses making the rounds, I am a little reluctant to do dipping sauce. I was thinking of dipping in the peanut sauce then dipping in toasted sesame seeds. Does that sound good?

That is really strange about the failing grade when the project isn't even due. I hope you can get that straightened out.

Robin -- I hope you enjoyed breakfast and a nice day with your husband.

Happy Birthday, Bob! Sheryl, I hope you are feeling better.

Ellen -- I hope you had fun at the winery. That to me is such a perfect way to spend a Friday evening.

My kids look at a new dish, sigh deeply like they are offended to the core and ask "Have we ever had this before?"
 Sounds very familiar. I usually don't spring an entirely new menu on them, but when I make some familiar things and one new thing Liam says, "You made that for you, right?"

That soup was GOOD!

Thanks for posting it! I do plan to try it. Maybe next week.

Laura, Has Liam decided that he does want to quit gymnastics? If he's really not enjoying it, I'd let him quit. I just find it difficult when they say they want to quit, just because they don't feel like going that day.

Yes, he has decided he wants to quit. I think he liked it when it was about strengthening his body, but now that he is in a more advanced class, there is a lot of focus on technique, and he could care less about that. He doesn't want to be a gymnast. He just wants to be in shape and strong.

Lauri -- Yes, Liam does play baseball, but that is only in the spring here. There is an indoor baseball club in town, and in the summer, Liam was saying that he wanted to join and workout during the off-season. That has kind of fallen by the wayside. I've asked if he wants me to sign him up for workshops, but the answer has been no. He has a lot of homework this year, so I think he would rather spend his free time playing with friends. That's fine, to a point, but I am looking for something to replace the gymnastics.

Nancy -- I do think Liam's height is part of the problem. He also started on the older side. He is in a class with some six and seven year-olds, and they are able to do the moves better than he is.

Interestingly, my BFF said the same thing when I cried to her. She said that maybe DH will get ready if he has a 9 month deadline ;)

Aimee, if Greg and I waited until we were financially stable, we wouldn't have either kid, but especially not Caili. Greg was the one who said if we waited until we thought we could afford it we would never have another child. He was right, and I am so glad things worked out the way they did.

went to my parents for lunch...I am so stuffed. We had mussels, greek salads, baked haddock with creamed peas, and baked potatoes. She also made tapioca for dessert.

Wow, that is quite the lunch! It sounds delicious. I hope your toe is better.

I made German food tonight -- sausages, sauerkraut, apple sauce (I didn't make that...my mom did), and rye bread.

You are too kind, I can tell you who would come out in last place already! ;) I'll try to take some pics! If the poor guy ever gets home.

" who moved the mono rail !!?? "

:rotfl2: Did I say THAAAT!!! :lmao:

:rotfl2: Did I say THAAAT!!! :lmao:

Boy, it really sounds like those of us who could not make it really missed out!!!
you girls really have some great memories I am sure. It maybe a good thing I did not go because since the baby I would have been saying like Lauren I am gonna pee my pants!!!

Ugh.....DH got another call while he was at his last home helping 90 year old people work their new oxygen machine! Good thing I had a big lunch but my guy is starving and tired.

Laura, I don't think there is anything wrong with a little downtime. Alexis already has so much homework in 1st grade, I don't know how we're going to keep up anything else. It's pretty understandable especially since he only wanted to do it to stay strong. Angelina struggled as she got taller with the artistic gymnastics & changed over to acro. which she was better suited for. Liam is obviously well suited for baseball, that is his 1st love!

Good luck with your appetizers this weekend!

Still waiting on DH here too, stuck in traffic.

You would really not believe the hysterical laughing we did that night!! It was sooo much fun!! :goodvibes

Vickie, Guess what? Bob got TWO NEW BATTERIES FOR HIS BIRTHDAY!!! :rotfl:

to Vickie, Kathy & Lauren.... Bob said "Hey little girls would you like some candy?"!!!!
