The Official Expedition Everest 2013 Thread

Two Months from tonight....

Yikes, that sounds so close! I still need to buy my plane tickets. I'm really kicking myself for not buying a few weeks ago and now the prices have gone up. I'm hoping that they'll drop again. At least I've already got my ADR at Tusker House and started a list of everything I want to try at the new Flower & Garden Festival food booths. Priorities, right?

I still need to determine my plans outside of the race. A fair number of us are coming off of a cruise that day. I go home on Monday, well before anything opens. I'll be back down in October after a sailing on the Magic and then again for the Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend.

Weighing whether or not to go to the parks on Saturday or Sunday and if I do whether I should get an event ticket or an annual pass. (Oh and the money tree hasn't been spotted in my back yard, although I sure could use it...)

Which cruise? I'm going on the October 12th cruise on the fantasy!

Double dip on the Magic out of Miami, Oct 20-25. First sailing once she is out of dry dock, with spiffy new improvements.:thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2
Hurricane Sandy kept us away from Castaway Cay last year on the Fantasy, so I figured I needed a double dip to make up for it. :lmao::lmao:

Eight weeks from tomorrow night!!!!!!!!!!
Who's ready? Anyone remember when they started releasing sample clues last year?

A co-worker of mine is coming down for the EE challange with me and we just formed a team...look out for team "Keep Calm and Run On"! Im so pumped - this is my first RunDisney event ever..this weekend we finally had some nice enough weather in Southwestern Ontario that I was able to actually run outside... not much longer to go now...good luck everyone! :thumbsup2

So I was curious about how the "heats" work. I am running with a group of people... some signed up for the 7-10 minute and some of us are in the last one... the 16 minute one. Just wondering as to how they divide everyone up and in what order they start everyone. Trying to plan things for after the race. Thanks in advance!!

RunDisney uses a wave start (or corrals) approach to help control the amount of people on the course at any one time.

For a 5K you are basically on your honor when you sign up for what your expected pace is going to be. (Longer races you need proof of time to get into a corral that starts earlier.) If you marked a 7-10 minute pace, you will most likely be in the first corral, Corral A. Someone indicating a 16 minute pace will most likely be placed in the last corral, probably Corral D or E. You can go down the alphabet as far as you like, but you cannot go up.

Your race bib will be marked with your corral and there will most likely be race volunteers checking bibs to allow entry into the corrals.

With a wave start, Corral A starts at the time listed as the start of the race (in this case, 10pm I believe). Five minutes later, they have a second start for Corral B. Five minutes later, Corral C. And so on and so on, until all the corrals have crossed the finish line. Since this is a timed event, your race bib will have a timing chip on the back of it. Your time will not start until you--your person, not your corral--has stepped over the start line.

Specifically for this event, after you cross the finish line of the race portion you will begin the scavenger hunt portion of the challenge. Both portions of the race are timed, and you will be able to see what your 5K race time your scavenger hunt time and total event time once they post the results.

Reminder, if you are checking a bag, security will need to inspect it (just like you are going into the park with a bag) as they bag pick up is located inside Animal Kingdom. Please allow extra time for this if you are going to check a bag.

Ok this may be a really stupid question but I've only done one 5K before this - in rainy Oct - and my DH was holding my bag as it was a Women only event that he was there to cheer me on :-) But that was because I needed a jacket and an umbrella LOL

What would you put in the bag if you did want to check a bag at EEC? How big is the bag? Do people change or just go on Kali River Rapids a few times? (Sorry if that's gross) What's the bare minimum of stuff you would put in a bag and check?

I'd rather not check a bag if I don't have to - I'm gonna have my belt pouch with water and my arm band for my iPhone as it is.

The bag they provide you is big. However, I wouldn't waste any time by checking the bag if I didn't have to. Last year, I used a belt pouch as well and it worked out fine. Friends of mine checked a bag and it was not a fun experience for them to get it back. As for going on Kali River Rapids, I was with a group of friends last year, and, yes we went KRR multiple times after the race. No one changes, it is a given that most people there just ran a race so it's not a big deal.

Oh, and Todd - your choice has been made for you... A fun Sunday filled with Italian waiters and a magical evening with a bunch of sparkly peeps. What more could you ask for? ;)

Thank you SOOOOO much!!! That helps trying to get our group all together, etc. after the race and all.

I checked a bag last year. It took a while to check it. The line to retrieve it was even longer. We kind of were escorted out of the party at closing time, which is when I picked up my bag. I obviously didn't need anything terribly from it. For longer events, I usually pack some baby wipes and a fresh shirt to change into. This year, I am planning on wearing a light drawstring back sack. I will put a washcloth in maybe. And my HyperJuice battery charger, in case my iPhone battery is running low.

More rum? ::yes::::yes:: (or maybe a fun Sunday filled with sparkly peeps and a magical evening with a bunch of Italian waiters?)

I got my 3rd mile in today... finally!!! Need to shave off about 30 seconds per mile to keep from getting picked up by that lovely golf cart. ;) I know the scavenger hunt is timed, but am I right in thinking there isn't a strict pace set that we have to keep???

Any suggestions on where to look for a bib for EE? I'll keep my eyes on here. Probably Craig's and his list on the internet as well.

I just booked a trip for that weekend and realized it was the same as EE.

Thanks for any suggestions that others may have used in the past.

Good Luck to all the EE's out there as you go into your last stretch of training.

You could check with charities? They block bibs off but I'm not sure - anyone know what charities run EE?

I would expect final race instructions to be emailed soon. I would also expect that runDisney will release a set of example clues as they have done in years past.

Hope everyone is still pumped up (or starting to get pumped up) about the race!

I am super excited! I roped my family into running with me (13 year old son on my team and husband running solo) and they are not so excited... I'm hoping the magic kicks in when they get there and they get bitten by the RunDisney bug too.

I've got to pull together my race outfit though. I know I'm wearing a blue sparkletech and I think I'm going to put some white fake fur trim around the bottom of it. I'm not sure about the shirt yet though. I kind of wanted a winter/snow/ice fairy theme using running clothes...

Anyone else wearing a costume?
