Tell me your upgrade stories!

I think I must be weird, but I would be disappointed with an upgrade to Saratoga Springs. It holds no appeal to me. If they overbook your resort and try to move you to Saratoga, what happens if you decline and they don't have any rooms at the resort you booked?

I agree.. we went past it later in the trip and I know I would have been disappointed if we had said yes to moving there. We declined and they just put us in the king bedroom we booked. Our flight got in at 8:30am so they still had rooms and were trying to move people so that the late arrivals wouldn't be stuck without an option.

We are going on May 5, POR RGR garden view. Hoping for upgrade to river view. What are the chances? Do they have suites at Por? Do you have a better chance for upgrade if you ask or are they more prone to just surprise you. Sorry, no upgrade story. This is our first WDW trip!

Invariably, when someone starts a thread just like this; the question starts to come up from people how to get a free upgrade. It is unfortunate.

Free upgrades are few and far between, and have nothing to do with anything you have control over. Upgrades have to do with maintenance issues, rooms out of inventory due to refurbishments, resort overbooking, and people who cannot leave on time due to weather issues at home. You have absolutely no idea how or when they will pop up.

Considering the fact that Disney has over 30,000 rooms and has rooms open 52 weeks a year. You can imagine how many people check in and never get an upgrade - there is only a handful here.

CM's have also stated that the least way to get a free upgrade is to ask for it - they will tell you how much the difference is between your rate and to upgrade using full rack rate for that season. If you have a discount, you will lose it because you are basically booking a new reservation. They prefer to surprise their guests with upgrades, IF and WHEN the possibility presents itself.

In addition, over the past two years, Disney has added several differenct booking categories, due to the types of requests they have seen come through with guests. So people are booking the level they want, leaving very little wiggle room for upgrades anymore. POR has added several new categories, thus creating less and less options for the categories, and they book up faster.

Basically, you booked the cheaper garden view room and are now expecting a river view room that someone else has already paid for. You are also setting yourself up for disappointment, if you anticipate, based on a dozen experiences on this thread, that you are going to be able to snag a room with a higher booking category.

In addition, POR is going through a major refurbishment and many rooms are out of inventory at each time, so there are less to dole out.

I would expect to get a garden view room, and if by some chance you get upgraded, it is a nice thing - but it is not a good idea to expect it from one thread.

Last November, At GF RPC, We booked a std. room and got upgraded to a suite when we checked in .... the room was HUGE!!!

We got an upgrade at the All Star Music. I asked if we could get a room closer to the lobby since our last stay was sooo far away. It was our anniversary and they upgraded us to the suite (music is the only value resort that offers suites). He also gave my two boys each an autograph book and a pen. The room was great! Another year we were to stay at a moderate resort and got upgraded to the Dolphin resort. This last time we went to Disney we stayed at the Beach Club……got ZERO special treatment (as should be expected). However, we got picked to be in the Animal Kingdom parade so that made up for no upgrades and made our trip that much more special!:thumbsup2

We've been fortunate to have received an upgrade on 3 occassions.

Beach Club standard to Lagoon View Club Level.
Yacht Club water to Lagoon Club Level.
Boardwalk standard to Garden Suite (pretty cool place, not much view but very comfortable.)

five trips to CSR - got the room we booked -very happy

One trip to GF booked a theme park view room got a view of the wedding pavillion (ie downgraded) they blamed our travel agents, our TA blamed WDW - nothing to do with the golf stars taking part in the golf classic obviously ;) after a few months of wrangling I gave in and wrote it off as it was beginning to spoil my positive feeling about WDW

One trip AKL and we got some pixie dust - October last year and our sixth trip to the world we booked a standard room and got upgraded to Savannah view - we were over the moon.

Don't like to be greedy but being upgraded to CL is something else :goodvibes:

Did Disney upgrade you? I have never held of them upgrading to a resort they do not own? :confused3

In 15 trips we've had 4 magical, unexpected upgrades:

1. 2007 - We booked a gv room at the Polynesian and we're upgraded to a TPV room. I had noted that we were celebrating DH's 50th birthday, but don't know if that had anything to do with it.

2. 2008- Our most unbelieveable upgrade. We took all our children, grandchildren and my mom on an all expense paid Disney trip. We were 16 in all - 4 rooms. I had booked gv rooms at the Beach Club. Imagine my shock when all 4 rooms were upgraded to gv cl!!!!

3. 2008 - Went back for a quick October trip and were upgraded from gv to cl at YC.

4. 2011 - Booked Sugarloaf CL at the GF and were upgraded to GF RPC!

I've been upgraded twice - once at YC and once at BC, but both times from a garden view club level room to a lagoon view club level room.

The one time it happened at the YC, I found out a week before arriving at the resort. I had sent a room request e-mail, setting forth the specific room numbers in the area of the CL floor where I like to stay. The IPO planners sent me back an e-mail saying that my requested rooms were garden view rooms, but that my reservation was for a lagoon view room. That's when I knew I was being upgraded. (In the end, while I got my upgrade to a lagoon view room, I did not get my request for the room to be in the area that I like. Oh, well - beggars can't be choosers.)

We have had several upgrades from standard to water view at BC/YC. Most of the time these seem to happen NOT from asking for an upgrade, but from politely asking for a particular room feature/location at checkin, such as "close to storm along bay" or "a full balcony please." They didn't tell us we were upgraded in view, we would just find out when we got the room.

Our biggest upgrade was from standard to inner courtyard view at WL. :lovestruc It was our first multi-night stay at anywhere other than a value or mod, and as soon as I entered the room I saw that we got the dreaded (to me) enclosed balcony (can you tell I really have strong feelings about balconies?) Anyway, I called right away, politely explained my deep burning desire for a real balcony, and after being put on hold for ten or fifteen minutes we were given another room, which when we entered was inner courtyard view. I was in balcony heaven! It was only when I got back home that I realized the very significant difference in price from standard to courtyard view. Once again, I had not asked for an upgrade, simply a different location.

I am still waiting for that big upgrade to concierge level or to the GF!

For our trip 2.5 years ago I booked a 1 bedroom villa @ BLT. This was before I even understood "MK view" etc. This was the first trip I ever planned (my mom had always planned before and we always stayed off site).

So, when we were checking in I asked DH to just ask if we could get a MK view (and offered to pay) @ BLT. Our kids were over the moon excited for this trip (DD was 3 and DS was 2) and were wearing there "first visit" stickers that the doorman had given them. The CM said there were no rooms like that available at BLT and upgraded us to a 1 bedroom suite in the CR on concierge level. The room was AMAZING! One bedroom, two bathrooms, huge dining table, two huge balconies. Perfect view of the castle and fireworks.

It was super magical for the kids.

My story was a shocking one for us: We had booked standard room at the poly last September and when we arrived we were told that there had been a problem with the hotel and the Manager asked us if we wanted to be moved to the Contemporary. He offered a couple of free meals but I said no we have the dining plan already. Then he offered to refund us one night, I said well I dont know I had been planning this trip for a long time and we had some reservations at Ohana. He offered me 2 nights to take the deal. I said OK, now, I had made the reservation when there was a big discount on the hotel rate. When we checked in the Contemporary we were on the 5th floor, with a lake view and there was a $900.00 dollar credit on my account!!! That is certainly not what I paid for a night at the Poly. The view was amazing, the Contemporary was great!! In fact we hated the Poly when we went back there to eat we thought it was very old and outdated.

This leads into my second unfortunate posting; I asked a question amd I did not get the answer I wanted to hear.

You asked a question and as a veteran, I gave you an honest answer. Unfortunately, with Disney, people seem to expect more than any other place on earth.

Has anyone ever been upgraded when renting points for a DVC resort or is this unheard of?

Ummm... You lost me. I have no idea what you are talking about. What question did you ask? You read waaaaaay too much into my post. I am not trying to get somebody's room that they paid for as you stated earlier. Just curious about how upgrades are given. If that offends you for some weird reason, well excuse me!

This past January my Mom and I booked a standard view at the Boardwalk Inn. Upon check in we were upgraded to the concierge level. We had a wonderful room that overlooked Epcot and the end of the Boardwalk.

I think what is trying to be said is that if you go into it looking for/expecting an upgrade ... and don't get one ... that you may be disappointed or upset. Go into the trip hoping to have a great time, with the room category you chose. If you get a bit of pixie dust and are upgraded, then by all means enjoy it ... just don't count on it or be disappointed if this doesn't happen.

Last year we booked a garden view room at the GF on expedia before our Disney Cruise. When we got off the DME a concierge hostess was waiting for us to escort us to our room. They upgraded us to a huge 2 bedroom CL Lagoon View suite.

I think there's an epidemic around here of people who have been around for years getting really butt hurt over things that don't warrant it. Not just on this thread, but many others. I've been put off by several responses I've read lately, and I know that others have as well. It's rather discouraging to newcomers who ask an honest question and then get reamed for it, and I've seen a few people almost leave the boards altogether because of the unwelcome feeling they're getting. Everyone needs to chill out. Walk away from the keyboard before responding. I realize that some things have been said over and over and it gets old, but with as fast as these threads move off of the main page and as unreliable as the search function is, repeat questions are going to happen. And I think a Disney movie said it best, "If you can't say somethin' nice, don't say nothin' at all". Please don't yell at me if I haven't gotten the quote exactly right.

As for how to get upgrades: be lucky, that's about it. I've read many people around here who've had pixie dust sprinkled on them numerous times, and a lot more people who never have. It's not something that you can try to get, you just luck into it, some more than others. Be happy for those who have gotten it and don't be disappointed when you don't, after all, you're still going to be at Disney.
