I'm not getting into the debate of pro vs. con on the information contained in the article below, just posting it as I saw it a couple of days ago and it seemed relevant to your post. I think if it's an unknown, Disney makes the right choice to take a conservative approach.

Quote:
Secondary Exposure to E-cigarette Emission Might be Harmful to Health

Electronic cigarettes are not emission-free. E-cigarettes contain volatile organic substances, including propylene glycol, flavors and nicotine, and are emitted as mist or aerosol into indoor air. Study showed that these ultrafine liquid particles of less than 2.5 micrometer in diameter may penetrate deeply into the lungs. Study further showed that these e-cigarettes produce substantially fewer ultrafine particles than conventional cigarettes, however, the substances emitted by e-cigarettes may be inhaled by non-users when used indoors. Second-hand exposure to e-cigarette emission which may lead to adverse health effects cannot be excluded.

Where does the info that the fine is per trip or per incident come from... some (ahem) "nice" non smoker on one of the other threads is claiming that it is a per smoke fine ... ie sit on your balcony and smoke 4 ciggs in a row and that is a $1000...and they will be willing to snap a pic to prove the smoking (now that is kinda creepy IMHO). I wonder what kind of teeth this will have... and how successful folks will be about contesting any charges. (that will make the old hot threads of shorts and seat savers seem tame LOL). No one will really know until after the Nov sailings...

Wouldn't having some freak show stranger snapping your pic in a private space repeatedly constitute harassment and/or stalking???

If anyone wants instructions on how to make tattle tails I'll help ya out. We used to make & pin them to our kids' backsides.

Talked to my brother, a smoker, about all this. At first he said he'd be canceling his future cruise but then he said he may not. He talked about how it stinks to be treated with such prejudice, like a criminal of some sort. That's awful. He said he may still smoke at least during the late night on his verandah and pay whatever fee if needed. He then went on to say if some Bozo followed him around tattle tailing that'd be a whole other situation....harassment....which he would definitely handle.

I have to ask you smokers, what about people who are allergic to cigarette smoke? What about little kids with sensitive lungs?

I get the people who smoke a cigar every now and then, but why, when you are on vacation, do you have to smoke three or more times a day? Disney is a private company that can do whatever they want. Don't like it, there are plenty of other cruise lines out there.

DH smokes, I don't. We have been booking total aft on the Dream & Fantasy, just so he could smoke and not bother anyone. If he can't smoke on the verandah, we'll definitely be booking inside rooms from here out. It also means I'll be seeing less of him if he has to spend time getting to the smoking area, smoking and getting back to the room. He generally smokes close to a pack a day, so that is a lot of time spent in the little "smokers world". Maybe they could build an enclosed area with exhaust fans to pull out the smoke and vent it away from the ship. They could darken the glass so that smokers could see out but non-smokers wouldn't have to look at smokers.:rotfl:
Since DCL saw fit to put a new smoking policy into effect because of complainers, maybe they'll reverse the shorts in the dining room if enough people complain about that. Seems like if you complain enough that something is ruining "your vacation", DCL will change the rules to fit whatever the most complainers want. Not good business in my book.
This. Very much this. It is bad enough how often he leaves the house to smoke in the garage. On vacations, he leaves the room to smoke outside. We booked a veranda (actually several verandas to keep our multi-generation party together) so he would not have to be away as much just to smoke. Now he will be going several decks away several times a day for a smoke. The vacation was supposed to be time for our family to be TOGETHER.:sad2:

Just received an email from Disney regarding their new policy. DH and I are both smokers. I have already emailed Disney telling them of my displeasure about their new policy. Surely there could have been some kind of a compromise like smoking on balconies only on deck 8 and higher for at least the new ships? That way everyone would have a choice when booking. I hope Disney reconsiders before our February cruise....

Aren't Concierge decks Deck 8? That means anyone who paid extra for it would have to accept smokers when they are on their verandah? Not all of them will want that, that's for sure.

I'm sure DCL tried to consider all the ways to go about it, but other lines they compare to (like Princess & Celebrity) have already gotten rid of smoking on the balconies (and Celebrity doesn't allow it in the casinos either :thumbsup2 which is nice not to have to walk through)

Evidently they didn't want to be behind the trends, is my guess. That, and reading the comment cards.:confused3

The problem with doing it by deck means those who prefer nonsmoking cannot book the suites or concierge then. That also is unfair.

Sadly, you will be the one to not like it as the 2 small DSA's will now be overflowing with smokers and the smoke wafting all over the decks. And your own advice right back at you, you don't want smoking on a cruise ship, go find one that is smoke free.

I sympathize with people who have allergies. I myself have a severe seafood allergy, now should I expect DCL to not offer any seafood on the cruise just to accommodate me and the few others that may have the same allergy? NO. Just as they would not eliminate all peanuts and other items that contain nuts for the select few with those allergies. When you have an allergy, it is up to YOU to take responsibility for it and not expect everyone to bow down and cater to you. That is not how the world works.

I really feel sorry for DCL customer service because the backlash once this in effect will be from both sides. The smokers will be unhappy with 2 shaming areas they have provided and the non-smokers will be complaining about all the smoke around the pools.

But it's Disney's right to ban smokers if they wanted to all together, they are actually doing you a service by still allowing you to smoke in certain areas. Smoking is not a right, it's a nasty habit that you can control.

I am not directing this post to those who use E-cigs or smoke a cigar every now and then, I am directing this toward the people that feel it's ok to smoke a cigarette more than five times a day.

E-cigs are not allowed at Disneyland either, except in smoking areas.

For whatever reasons, someone up on the Disney ladder has grouped them to be with cigarettes. I was surprised by this, but it seems they are being consistent with DCL's new policy.

Just thought someone would find that interesting,
Dreams

I knew it wouldn't last before someone couldn't read the title! You have your bash smokers thread so ride your high horse over there please. There are multiple threads bashing us, no need to come here! Have you seen the smoking section on the classics? Hope you enjoy the adult pool!

I called up DCL directly to give them my feedback.
I figure at least then they have my feedback. I'll probably write them a letter as well. Thank you DCL for assuring my verandah will have stunning vistas and breathable air.
Edit to add-
I encourage smokers and those with other opinions to do the same.

The parks has that rule because when they were allowed to smoke anywhere the people who smoked real cigs started lighting up in non-smoking sections as well. For control in open air environments it is simply easier to just say nothin that resembles a cig, cigar, or pipe.

Lol! Thankss

no problem. I read that thread and my blood boiled. i'm usually a very calm person but don't tell me what MY rights are!! I know my rights thank you very much. you don't get to decide for me.
and this is a very nice enjoyable thread. hope it continues that way. :flower3:

LOL That totally arbitrary and capricious.

Actually, smoking IS a right. It is a legal activity and we in the US have the right to the pursuit of happiness. And if smoking makes one happy, that is their right. Natually their right stops when it starts to infringe on other's rights but stickly speaking, smoking - just like drinking and over-eating - is a right.

There are some that consider over-eating and drinking alcohol sinful.....and a nasty habit you can control.

Nope, this is a public forum, I can post wherever I like. Smoking is allowed in public, but Disney isn't public property. If they ban smoking in certain areas well you are going to have to listen to them or face the consequences. Just like Restaurants ban smoking, airlines ban smoking, hotels ban smoking, and now the cruise lines (At least Disney, Princess, and Celebrity) are starting to. You are just going to have live with it and smoke on public property.

Sorry, I was not one of the ones who complained or complains about people smoking, but the world does not revolve around you guys. (Or the people who always bash smokers under all circumstances for that matter).

thank you, you made my point. I may have to smoke where I'm told but unlike what you said, it is my right to smoke.
your also right, it is a public forum and you can post here. it is unfortunate that we can't post exactly what we would like to though.
kind of a forum bi-law thing.
