Just back from 9 days at the world. I had surgery on a major artery in my leg that was botched (another surgeon's words, not mine) and the leg now swells(expected) and my foot hurts (unexpected). I did rope drop to close every day and had no issue except the foot on my bad leg would get sore. I am used to my leg swelling (luckily is isn't too painful) but this is the first time I had the foot issue (this the first trip since the surgery). I am on the pooh size of the equation. I did wear tennis shoes but by mid-afternoon I was limping and standing on one foot. The 2nd opinion from another surgeon said the leg was un-fixable. Does anyone have any recommendation for a shoe that may help my aching foot? I am not sure that the foot hurting is related to my leg but since I have never had that issue before it is my best guess. Our next trip is in a few months so I would really appreciate some advice.

Can you tell us more about the type of foot pain you are having? It may help get you more concrete suggestions for shoes. Since I do not know the type of pain you have I can offer some suggestions from personal experience:

1) to ease swelling feet at night, ice baths are genius. I have a great little inflatable " foot tub" from Bed Bath & Beyond that is easy to pack and light enough to easily move when filled with ice and water. The cold can be painful in its own way but the results are great!

2) If your pain is more on the top of your foot, are you sure your shoes have enough arch support? Orthotic insoles (custom or even Dr, Scholls) can be a real pain reliever. Also, STIFFER shoes are helpful in this case. I like Klogs clogs. Good stiff shoes that can take my custom orthotics.

3) If your pain is on the BOTTOM of your feet, try achilles tendon stretches and massaging the bottom of your foot with a tennis ball (roll ball on floor with your foot as the ball rolls along the bottom of your foot). Also find shoes with a very cushioned sole. My mom has this issue every day (not just on WDW days) and she swears by the brand Nayot. I know Zappos carries them so you can check them out.

Finally, I know it is a major drag but you could consider using a cane to relieve the pressure on your foot. I have been recovering from a foot fracture last April and use a cane on "bad" days with great relief.

I wish you the best with both your leg and foot pain. I am so sorry you are having to deal with this. I am happy you are not letting it slow you down!

Good Luck:goodvibes

Thanks. It is a feeling of soreness on the bottom of my foot. Like I have stood on it too long. No swelling of the actual food just the soreness. Any advice is appreciated.

I have a lot of swelling of my feet due to heart failure. I wear Teva's, they look like a combination of sandals and tennis shoes. For me they are the most comfortable shoe I've ever owned!

You might want to check with your doctor just to make sure the foot thing isn't related to the leg, especially if it's continued past your trip. He or she could also probably advise you on other possible things to try.

Thanks for the tips. It seems a lot of folks like the Tevas but I wasn't sure if they would give me enough support. Good quality tennis shoes seem to keep the pain at bay until 8 hours on my feet. I am sure it is due to the surgery since it is just the foot on my bad leg. I did speak with the doctor but they are no help. They tell me they have no clue that it will be trial and error on my part - not very helpful at all! I will try the Tevas next trip!

You might try rolling on a tennis ball and doing heel stretches on the wall. It might be some sort of plantar fascitis. The muscles in the bottom of the foot might be too tight and rolling on a tennis ball or frozen water bottle might help.

I love my SAS sandals. I have 5 pairs and have been wearing this brand for years. They are pricey though.

Now all I need is a shoe for winter! Sandals don't work well in snow.:rotfl:

Thanks! I thought I was going to end up in ugly clunky shoes but now I have choices including sandals!

I have suffered with plantars fasciitis on and off for years. I just had my knee replaced in June and the plantars came back due to the additional stress that was added to the opposite foot of the new knee. The dr said harder inflexible shoes work best...if you can bend the shoe or twist it there is not enough support. New balance tennis shoes work great. This will be my first time in WDW since the knee replacement so we will see how things go. Another thing that helps with plantars is freezing a water bottle and rolling your foot on it...it really helps! Good luck!

This is going to be a long response.

I too was suffering from extreme pain in the bottom of my feet. I went to one of those shoe store where the make custom orthotics. I did not get the custom ones, but I did talk with the pedorthist. (I think that is the correct term for the specialist that does the orthotics). I made an appointment, and she had me bring in several pairs of my then current shoes. She watched me walk with and without shoes. I stood on this mirror thing so she could see the bottoms of my feet when standing. I found the experience very educational.

She explained why the cheep shoes thatbi was wearing provided no structure and support. I also did not feel like she was just tring to take my money. She asked about my budget before even showing me any shoes, and she asked about my job. I am a teacher who is standing or walking most of the work day.

I did not have to order custom orthotics, but got someoff the rack New Blance inserts that have really helped. She showed me the exercises and said that the inserts alone would not fix the problem that i had do do the stretching exercises as well. i was told to only go barefoot in the shower.I got an Asics brand running shoe that was on their clearance table. I was also able to find a pair of dressier shoes on clearance. The inserts would not fit in this pair, but she was able to improve the support in that pair adding layers of cork under the lining that was already there. Normally they do charge for this service, but since I was getting two pairs of shoes she did not charge me. She also gave me an extra discount since I was a teacher.

I was told to go barefoot only in the shower. I take the inserts out of my shoes and put them in a pair of slippers when I don't feel like wearing shoes.

I have Ben amazed at the improvements. As I was warned about, the first couple of days with the new inserts were uncomfortable, but after a just a few days I was amazed at the improvements. I can work all day on my feet and now my feet are just tired at the end of the day. I have no more of that pain that made me not want to move at all.

I did relaps a bit over the Christmas break. My feet had stopped hurting, so I got a bit lazy about using the inserts in my slippers. After a couple of days of wearing just the slippers with no support the pain came back, but not to the extreme that it was. So I have gone back to wearing the inserts full time.

I can also wear my Keen hiking boots all daywith no pain, not that I would wear hiking boots at Disney.

Anyway, to make a long story short, I would not hesitate to recommend to anyone suffering plantar faciatis pain to go to a specialty shoe store. I assume that you could get similar service at a podiatrist, but I live in the middle of nowhere. The shoe store is 1 hour from my house. I would have to drive 2 hrs to get to a podiatrist.

I haven't been to the foot doctor in years. I figured it had to do with the leg surgery. Looks like a visit to my foot doctor is in order. He is really good and helped me with serious painful ingrown toe nails about 5 years ago, not problems since.
