Is this place still as bad as everyone says? We got a last minute ADR there for this coming Sat for dinner. What does anyone recommend if anything at all? Any pics of the food? Thanks

Jenny

We were going to eat there for dinner last month but when DH looked at the menu (not the one online but the one in the actual restaurant) he was not feeling the cuisine. I think he was looking for a more Mexican tamale, burrito, taco salad kind of meal.

Its been 7 years since we ate there, but I remember my wife and me being unimpressed. That my wife was unimpressed was especially surprising to me, because she is *N*U*T*S* about Mexican food. We found it to be very average. Our trip back this year doesn't include the San Angel.

Now, having said that, we're from Oklahoma, and you can't swing a dead cat around here without hitting a Mexican restaurant. The meal we had at San Angel wasn't bad, but it certainly wasn't any better or more remarkable than any of the many Mexican dinners we've had right here at home. People from locales where Mexican restaurants are less prevalent might find it more compelling.

If you're a big Mex food fan, and are expecting something really special, you may be in for a disappointment.

I actually can't believe it gets such bad reviews. For us, it's a must do every trip! The atmosphere absolutely cannot be beat and the food isn't awful, I actually find it to be quite tasty. But honestly, let's say the food is bad, so what? If I want good food, I can eat at restaurants at home, but in my opinion, at WDW I eat at places for the amazing Disney atmosphere. I'd say try it once and form your own opinion.

We've been to Disney numerous times now, but never eaten there. My kids always think the inside looks "cool". When I had to change around our ADR's for our arrival night dinner, t:scared: his was one of the choices that was still available for this coming Sat night!!!!! Anyone have any pics of the food? So I can see how gross it may look?:scared:

I didn't read the last reply quick enough! Thanks for your help!!!! We will try it this time around! My boys will be excited:yay:

I have to say it is the ONLY restaurant that we flat out HATED!!! It was beyond horrible~~ Food was actually gross. The service was worse then the food. We are easy to please people, so it had to be really bad for us to say we would NEVER give it a second shot. The only plus side was it was really very cool looking and it was airconditioned!!! It was a huge let down.

Is there anything on the menu that is somewhat decent? I understand that it is not "standard" mexican food. But can someone point me in the direction of pics from the food porn thread? like a page index? My other choices that were available were Rose Crown (Nothing my kids would like), or Marrekesh. :confused3

I've never tried Marrekesh, but I did try Rose & Crown for lunch. I didn't really like it because it had two strikes against it; the food wasn't out of this world and neither was the atmosphere.
I wish I had a picture of it, but at San Angel Inn I really like the Sope Tradicional, I'm pretty sure its considered an appetizer, but it's enough for me. I think it's delicious!

What is different about the food? I ask because I lived in Texas most of my life. Spent about half in El Paso, and 1/2 in E. Texas / South E. Texas. The Mexican food in the two areas are very different. The food in E. Texas, and what most of the rest of the country sees as Mexican food is more what I would classify as TexMex. The food in El Paso was not as spicy, more green chiles, less hot chiles. Stuff like that.

My parents mentioned that they went several years ago to San Angel Inn and really liked it, so I was wondering if why so many people found the food not very good. If it was because it was greasy, etc... or if it was not what was expected (i.e. TexMex type food).

I don't find the food bad. We have been there twice but not going this year. We rather try another place. The atmosphere is great and the food is ok. When I think of Mexican food I think of the standard burritos, fajitas, and tacos. I think that is what most people expect :confused3 .

you might love the place.

I went a little over a year ago and had a great time. As other posters have said, the food isn't "fantastic" but the atmosphere sure is. And a margarita helps :) I say give it a try!

That's what I would've posted. The Margarita makes everything here taste good. Actually the food is so so, pretty much the same stuff outside at the CS, but the margarita helps alot.

DO NOT get the shrimp/pasta dish. I made that mistake once and it was awful - it tasted like it came from a can. I usually get the Pescado a la Ranchera and it is fine. Basic fish over rice. DH has had the Plato Mexicano and had no complaints. The nachos as an appetizer are also good. Honestly, we go more for the atmosphere and margaritas than the food, but it's just one of the things we do for the experience - kind of like going to a character meal. I have many fond memories of this restaurant and for me, a trip to Disney wouldn't be the same without a meal at SAI.

We ate there a few years ago and to date it has been our worst Disney dining experience. Our server was just plain awful. Food came out cold, we went it back & it came back to us lukewarm. Food was just ok (but may have been good if it was hot).

That said, we did love the atmosphere and we are giving it a 2nd try this trip but for lunch. We have deluxe dining and figure there will be something there to munch on. We almost always give a restaurant (Disney or otherwise) a 2nd chance in case we hit it the first time on just a really bad night.

The mahi-mahi a la Veracruzana is quite tasty and usually whatever is the
"surgencia del chef" is good, too.

We do have several Mexican restaurants around home but most are "tex-mex" (tacos, enchiladas, burritos). What I have at San Angel is much better. Also, though the service is sometimes slow and the waiters not particularly friendly, I've never found the service to be bad. At any rate, the atmosphere and margaritas make this place a must do for us every trip!

I have only eatin there twice but I look forward to the third time during one of my future visits after I try some other restaurants. I have never had a bad meal at Disney, just some were not as good as others.

We just ate at San Angel Sunday for my Mother's Day lunch. We eat there often and love it. But be prepared for more authentic Mexican food and not Tex-Mex! We love it!

We were there in September (2007) and absolutely loved it. Not only is the atmosphere great, the food was delicious. We've been talking about it ever since we got home and can't wait to go back when we are there in December. Definitely shouldn't be missed.
