RV as a Vacation Investment For Disney and General Vacations

The short questions are at the end of this post, thanks for reading!

Hello everyone! I have always been reading the posts on DISboards and finally have a question that I don’t think has been asked before (or at least maybe one that I haven’t found on this site). I have always been grateful for all the advice, and fun comments people have written here (and on other sites) and there is a concern my family has along with an opportunity that is time sensitive, and for that purpose if you are like me and browse multiple different sites, you will probably see this posted on there. We need lots of help and need to act fast. Moving forward I hope to be a contributing member of this forum and thanks for your help!

Just a bit of background:
Our family of four (three different generations) have gone to Disney about 15 times. We have gone to Aulani two times. We are also DVC members for about the same number of years, and have used the points in every possible way imaginable (RCI FTW!) and honestly love getting the value of what we actually pay for on a vacation even if it is mind-numbingly expensive. Almost all of us work in fields that give us no heads up as to when we are off or we just don’t know until that week. So flights were always last minute, the earliest we ever booked for a Disney vacation was two months in advance.
We have always used flights to get to where we need to go. At first we thought that going on multiple flights would allow us the benefit of miles or discounts using our cards that are associated with airlines. To be honest, those cards are great for many other reasons, but not for accruing enough points to be able to even get one flight to one location.
However in recent years we began to drive to other airports to be able to get cheaper flights on short notice. Our max was 7 hour drives to the next airport to get really cheap flights on relatively short notice. That was 7 hours of anxiety about reaching to that airport in time and everything that no doubt many of you understand.

With COVID, we were unable to go anywhere at all for many months. Now this is where the question is:
We are not campers, we do not like to camping, however our family has dealt with very terrible vacations that have gone wrong, so being in a small RV will not affect us. We are not interested in the RV lifestyle. However, we are considering buying an RV to just drive to Disney World, for multiple shorter visits per year rather than one long one. We are also considering the RV to drive to airports much farther away from us to get cheaper flights to Hawaii. We also want to use the RV to possibly drive into Canada and visit areas that we were not able to do before. In general, the RV would potentially allow us to explore many areas and go to many different events much farther than our state than we ever could before.
There are hidden fees with the RV, not just the RV itself but also insurance, along with where to store it. To be honest these costs are also adding up as well (not sure if there are other costs, we’d be glad if others can bring them up). Even with the price of gas, the cost savings of not going on a flight multiple times a year and being able to go places we never could afford to go before may be worth it. I repeat, we just want a mobile hotel to stay while we drive to our destinations. Even if our family grows, what we are searching for will give us enough space for that moving forward. We found an RV we like but are hesitant to buy it now that we have found one, ha! (its used so we aren’t buying something that will instantly depreciate in value and we regret later on, plus it will allow us to break even with he investment sooner than never if we buy new).

So the Major Questions are as follows (apart from the minor ones above):

1. Can we drive to Disney World/Disneyland and park the RV for free (using the free parking DVC perk) while we use the resort and stay there for the entirety of our trip?
2. Is this even a good idea?
3. For Hawaii (and other Disney resorts outside of the US) can we park the RV in the airports while we go on our trip? We would be looking at a 25ft long 8ft tall RV.
4. RV we crazy?

Thanks!
T.O.M.

First of all -- WELCOME TO THE DIS!
So the Major Questions are as follows (apart from the minor ones above):

1. Can we drive to Disney World/Disneyland and park the RV for free (using the free parking DVC perk) while we use the resort and stay there for the entirety of our trip?
2. Is this even a good idea?
I'm not sure what you're asking. If you're asking if you can park the RV and use it for lodging rather than using points for a villa, I'm almost certain that's a NO.

If you're asking if you can get a villa on points, and park at the resort, that is probably yes, although the parking availability for a large vehicle will vary a lot from resort to resort.
3. For Hawaii (and other Disney resorts outside of the US) can we park the RV in the airports while we go on our trip? We would be looking at a 25ft long 8ft tall RV.
That would depend on the airport, but I'm pretty sure you'd have to park at some private remote parking lot rather than in an airport parking garage. If you're at home, leaving the RV parked at home and Ubering to the airport would probably be a lot less expensive.

4. RV we crazy?
Probably, but that doesn't make you bad people! Welcome again to the DIS!

1. I would be surprised if parking a RV anywhere other than a campground is allowed on Disney property (overnight), even for DVC. Isn't the free parking for a standard sized vehicle, not an oversized vehicle? I guess, this might be the time to pull out the T&C for DVC.

2. What is the purpose of having a RV, versus an SUV for driving to WDW? Is it because the drive cannot be accomplished in a day and you want a place to sleep on the drive there?

3. Pretty sure you would park at a private lot. I don't think airport lots would accommodate RVs

4. Likely...lol

You said you aren't RV people. Don't buy it. Covid will be over and hotels for the night would be much easier than everything involved with an RV. It really doesn't sound like this would be a good idea for you. Maybe you can rent one to get a feel for it. There are lots of youtube videos on what is involved with owning one.

You might get better insight on the camping community board here. (High concentration of RV owners.)

1. I'm assumig you mean park it and stay at the resort, if they have enough space you should be able to, with the key word being "should" as it may depend. I've seen numerous RVs parked at resorts. I assume the owners just drove them down to have a place to stay enroute, most are parked pretty far out in the parking lots. If you are a DVC member I'd ask directly to make sure its not a problem.

2. Sure, you're basically using it like a big suburban with a fridge, bathroom and places to sit.

3. Generally speaking yes, but you need to do some research to see where you can park. You're not going to be parking in the garage, but some have large vehicle parking that isn't in the garage itself. I'd spend some time looking at the airports you are considering and see what your options are, could be just using a long term parking, but again explore that.

Unlike you we are RVers, we've had a Class A since 2007. I've never taken it to Disney but I'm on the left coast up north so it doesn't pencil out. If I was close WDW, I'd be going all the time. Disneyland is another subject, finding parking for an RV could be a bigger issue and if you are staying at a non-Disney hotel you may find their lots can not accommodate you. Something like the Sheraton at the Park, Hilton or Marriott at the Convention Center could as I've seen a few there.

The thing that caught my eye and my word of caution is you used the term "investment" financially these are a horrible investment - they depreciate - a lot. In your case do not buy new, you want to find a used one that does not have roof leaks. You are going to need to hire an inspector to go over the RV for you. These things have 6 tires, and unlike a car you will have to replace them even though there is a lot of treat left on them. The sun damages them and they age out after about 7 years. If buying used (and even some new) you need to look at the date code on the tire so you know how old they are. Old tires or cheap "china bombs" can blow out on the freeway and you're in a mess - fast.

But I'm not sure you will really enjoy driving it, owning it and paying to maintain it, etc. So before you buy, please oh please rent one and try it out. It could save you a ton of headaches/heartaches and money in the long run.

If you're not "campers" just walk away. It's a lot to take on. First and foremost, if you plan to "use the onboard facilities" be prepared. A magical fairy doesn't just appear to "dump" for you! Not a pretty job. (watch the movie RV). As previously said: rent one first! I grew up camping, then bought a travel trailer, a class A etc. but to a newbie, tread lightly. Good luck.
ps: if you do decided to use a campground please, please learn all the camping etiquette!

I will say from experience as my folks had an RV while my son's were growing up. We had a blast on all the trips we took including Ft Wilderness. So many great memories!
I want to tell you though, it is a lot of work! My Dad and my sister are both very experienced campers and they even said a lot involved in running it.
It also requires a lot of maintenance. We had it 15 years and we were always updating something on it.

I don't know the answer to the airport question.
We did park it at a resort in Florida but that was a long time ago.

We ran the numbers for us..
yearly tax, insurance, storage, maintenance plus if we bought the trailer it would change our gas mileage to around 12mpg .. after all of this we could upgrade to a really nice hotel along the way.
Most states have free parking at walmarts or truck stops but not Florida. Walmart and other places do not have free parking.
Remember it is the land of RVs and retirement.
Disney campgrounds are almost the same price as a value resort if you can get a spot.

WDW: I have seen RVs parked at the back of parking lots for resorts. As long as no one is actually staying in them during the time they are parked there, it should not be an issue. I know that on the Camping boards some have indicated that some resorts do not have space and they are directed elsewhere to park. The CMs at the resorts should be able to tell you where to park.

DL: You might need to contact someone at the Grand Californian or ask on the Disneyland thread.

2. Is this even a good idea?

4. RV we crazy?

Only you can decide if RV life is for you. I would suggest that if you have not already, maybe check out the Camping board and maybe ask some questions there.

3. For Hawaii (and other Disney resorts outside of the US) can we park the RV in the airports while we go on our trip? We would be looking at a 25ft long 8ft tall RV.

You probably need to check the websites for the different airports you would fly out of and see what they indicate. You might also check with some of the park and ride lots just a bit away for the airports to see if they offer parking.

I recommend going to the "Camping at Disney World" board here on Disboards.

There are a couple of excellent threads about camping/RV in general. They explain some of things you need to think about in regards to RVing and not just while at Disney

I don't camp but I enjoy reading their threads. Bama_ed is particularly helpful to new comers.

Excellent points. RV because you like to camp, not to save money!
