Run Hard, Stop for Pictures, Eat Everything: A 2016 Wine & Dine Race Weekend Trip Report - COMPLETE

Joining along! Boma breakfast is always delicious, and I like the way you routed the buffet line. Savory first, then sweet. That was probably the smartest option.

But did you get a kiwi? We actually did 2 passes through the vendors as we got there before my older brother and his family so did it once then again with them. The first time through missed the kiwis but the 2nd time got one. I love how they have the large maps printed. Boma's looks good too. I've never done bfast there as like you I'm not a huge buffet person.

I saw the kiwis but I didn't get one since I wasn't sure when I'd get around to eating it. I probably should have, though. I can't even remember the last time I had a kiwi!

Boma definitely wouldn't be an every trip kind of thing for me but it was a nice treat on a day that I wasn't heading to a park for rope drop.

fact I had reservations at Boma for after the 10K, but cancelled them, when I just couldn't really justify the cost, just to have "tastes" of a bunch of different things. I would typically do buffets with DH because He.Can.Eat. so that makes it worthwhile, as he indulges in enough for both of us.

Definitely agree that those buffet costs can be hard to justify when you don't eat a ton. I tried to be very leisurely so as to be able to have at least part of a second plate!

I can't believe I didn't even notice these. Great photo!!

Thanks! I might not have noticed but when I was walking by someone else was taking photos of them.

Breakfast looks delicious. That Simba waffle is the best! Sounds like everything went pretty smoothly at the Expo. We went the first day when we did W&D last year and it was pretty crazy. Cute shot of you in front of the sign!

Simba waffle was yummy and cute! I was a little nervous about going to opening of the expo even though it was the second day. The official merchandise area filled up fast but I didn't see anything too insane. It probably helped that I wasn't after the "hot ticket" items.

I have never stayed at AKL either but love visiting it. Boma breakfast is great.

The walls look great and thats nice that someone offered to take a picture for you.

One of these days I'll justify a stay at AKL!

It was very nice! He was very insistent that he wanted to take the picture! :)

Looks like you had an awesome breakfast and a successful Expo day! You seemed to not spend too much either!

I tried to limit myself. There was a lot of cute non-RunDisney merchandise but I have SO much running gear already. My designated drawers are full!

I love Boma for breakfast. I wish they had an a la carte option! "100% full" made me LOL.

I needed a to-go option. I probably would have appreciated the French toast bread pudding more if I was able to eat it a few hours later.

Good job not spending much at the expo! I admire you. ::yes::

I'm glad I had a plan going in and made myself stick to it. Saving the money to spend at F&W booths instead.

This is random, but I don't think I've seen a picture of you with your hair down - I LOVE your haircut! It's so cute!

Thanks so much! I cut about 10 inches off around Labor Day. I really like it but it's actually more work than longer hair since I can't just pull it back. I also discovered that it doesn't photograph well for races as I can only put like a third of it up and the rest is stringy, sweaty mess as will be apparent in my post-race photos. Oh well!

Joining along! Boma breakfast is always delicious, and I like the way you routed the buffet line. Savory first, then sweet. That was probably the smartest option.

Welcome! I actually stumbled in to the buffet plan as my plate was totally full once I got all the non-sweet stuff that I was interested in.

Your pup is adorable! I love his Mickey outfit!

Looking forward to hearing about your race experience & your solo trip - Wine & Dine was my second solo trip to Disney for a race weekend.

Boma looks good!

Following along! I hope you ended up feeling better. I've been sick the lat 2 trips and it's awful. Did the Airborne work for you? Btw your dog is so cute!

Day 1 – Friday, November 4 – Expo Day, Part 2

After finishing with the “expo” part of the expo, it was time to head to packet pick-up.

12.jpg

Fortunately, the line that had formed prior to opening had been totally absorbed, and I was able to walk right in. I was glad that I had printed my waiver in advance, because there was a line to access the computers to print.

There were maybe two people in front of me in the line for my section of numbers, but I had my bib within a few minutes and popped over to another set of tables to grab my shirts.

19.jpg

There was a fancy backdrop set up that I found out later was being used for Lumiere meets but there was no sign of him at that time. Before heading out, I decided to check out the second RunDisney merchandise area that was upstairs in the same building, just to make sure there was nothing else I needed.

13.jpg

Along the way, there were some quotes from Ratatouille and other movies.

14.jpg

As well as these cute silhouettes of the host characters for the weekend.

17.jpg

15.jpg

16.jpg

I didn’t find anything else I couldn't live without in the merchandise area, but they did have some more cute backdrops where lots of folks were taking photos with their bibs.

18.jpg

I was totally done with the expo by 11 am, which was about 15 or 30 minutes earlier than I had predicted as a “best case” scenario. My initial plan had been to take a bus to one of the nearest resorts, maybe All Stars or Coronado Springs, and then hop a bus to Animal Kingdom with the intention to put all my expo goods in a locker. But since I was running ahead of schedule, I decided to head back to POFQ and drop my stuff in my room so I wouldn’t have to worry about it later. The bus back to Port Orleans came within a few minutes and dropped off at French Quarter first. I literally walked into my room, dropped my bags on the table, and turned around to head back to the bus stop. It was only about a 5-minute wait for the bus to Animal Kingdom. Because it was midday, French Quarter and Riverside were sharing a bus, so we had to do the loop around Riverside before heading to the park.

I arrived at Animal Kingdom a few minutes after noon, ready for some park time!

Your pup is adorable! I love his Mickey outfit!

Looking forward to hearing about your race experience & your solo trip - Wine & Dine was my second solo trip to Disney for a race weekend.

Boma looks good!

Thank you! Mickey was his first and favorite toy, so I had to get him the outfit to match!

Hope you enjoyed your solo race weekend as well!

Following along! I hope you ended up feeling better. I've been sick the lat 2 trips and it's awful. Did the Airborne work for you? Btw your dog is so cute!

Welcome! Thanks! This was my second big vacation in a row that I've gotten sick at the very beginning - so frustrating. I don't know if the Airborne actually worked but I consumed the whole bottle in a three-day period and things didn't get really bad until after I got home. So maybe it was successful in delaying the misery?

Day 1 – Friday, November 4 – Animal Kingdom

My goal for the parks this trip was to try and smell the roses rather than just rush around, not always my strong suit. So I took a minute when I got through the gates at Animal Kingdom to watch a cast member feeding some birds.

20.jpg

It was a beautiful day. Hot, but not quite too hot.

21.jpg

This year, RunDisney switched from using the outside company MarathonFoto to using Photopass photographers for the race photos. I planned to take lots of character photos during the races, so I bought Memory Maker in advance of my trip. It was my first time to have Memory Maker, so I was determined to get my money’s worth! Being solo and pretty shy, I was more than a little self-conscious about waiting in line for the photo-ops with just me, but I did my best to be brave! First chance was in front of the Tree of Life.

22.jpg

23.jpg

Hey Pascal!

24.jpg

After my photoshoot, I made my way to the village of Harambe.

25.jpg

I had just a few minutes to kill before my first FP+. I was feeling just a little hungry, so I decided to grab a quick snack to tide me over until my dinner ADR. I ended up with a Mickey pretzel with cheese sauce. Not super exciting but it hit the spot. Once I was done, it was time to use my first FP+ of the day for The Lion King show. I see this show every trip. I just love the performers, the colors, the music. There was a family sitting in front of me with four young children, and they were all clearly seeing it for the first time. I had almost as much fun watching their reactions to the show as I did watching the show itself.

Animal Kingdom! My favorite park!! I love your photo shoot. You got some really adorable pictures. We also love Festival of the Lion King and make a point to see it on every trip. It is just so well done and so entertaining!!

I totally hear you on feeling weird waiting for solo photo-ops, but I'm glad you did - your pics are so cute!!

LOVE Festival of the Lion King!! :lovestruc

Day 1 – Friday, November 4 – Animal Kingdom, Continued

After Festival of the Lion King, I made my way over to Asia. I stopped along the way for another PhotoPass photographer. The backside of the tree has the advantage of no other people in the shot!

33.jpg

The gibbons were enjoying their afternoon with lots of high flying.

34.jpg

It was time for my second FP+: Expedition Everest. I think Expedition Everest is my favorite thrill ride at WDW. It’s about the maximum “thrill” I can handle before I get nervous.

35.jpg

I ended up on the very back row for my train ride through the mountain.

36.jpg

As soon as the ride was over, I immediately hopped into the single rider line. There were only a handful of people in front of me, and I was riding again in just a few minutes. Animal Kingdom really did not seem crowded at all on this Friday afternoon.

I had a little bit of time before my final FP+, so I took a stroll through the Maharajah Jungle Trek. It was pretty warm and a lot of the animals seemed to be laying low, including the tigers, who had found nice, shady spots to lounge.

39.jpg

40.jpg

After my trek, it was time for my 3rd FP+ on the Kilimanjaro Safaris. It seemed like there was no standby line for the safaris, which I thought was a little odd. Either that or maybe I just missed it. This was the latest in the day I have ever been on the safari. Usually we ride in the mornings. It was also the hottest I’ve ever been at Animal Kingdom since I’m usually there in the winter. I think the combination led to a fairly sedate safari. The first several areas had no animals in sight, but once we got to the savannah, the views improved and the rest of the safari was pretty good.

Thank you! Festival of the Lion King! I knew it had a better name than "The Lion King show" but for some reason my mind was blanking! It never gets old though, does it?

I totally hear you on feeling weird waiting for solo photo-ops, but I'm glad you did - your pics are so cute!!

LOVE Festival of the Lion King!! :lovestruc

Thanks! I'm really happy with how all of my PhotoPass pictures from the weekend turned out, so I'm glad I did it. I just couldn't help feeling goofy, especially if there was a line of people waiting. I think that's the only context in which I felt weird being solo.

Day 1 – Friday, November 4 – Animal Kingdom, Continued and Beach Club

After my safari, I had a little time before I needed to head out for my ADR, so I stopped by to check out what the gorillas were up to. The glare from the glass messed with my photo, but I love that this gorilla is totally just kicking back and chilling.

46.jpg

At about 3:45, I started my journey towards the exit. Along the way, I passed this cotton-top tamarin who looked like he was thinking about making a break for it.

47.jpg

I was pretty pleased with what I had accomplished in less than 4 hours at Animal Kingdom. As I was arriving at the bus area, the bus I wanted was just preparing to pull away. I probably could have made a run for it, but I had time to spare and was trying to conserve my energy for all the running I’d be doing for the next two days. I only had to wait about 10 minutes before another bus arrived. I arrived at Beach Club and walked leisurely along the path between the Beach Club and Yacht Club and back. Along the way, I spotted a couple getting engaged on the beach. This was the first of three couples I saw getting engaged during the weekend!

I headed back to Beach Club and checked in about 10 minutes early for my 4:50 ADR (early bird dining) at Beaches & Cream.

48.jpg

This was a restaurant I had always wanted to try, but it had never really made sense in my plans on previous trips, so I was excited to fit it into this one. I decided that the night before the 10K was a safer bet than the night before the half marathon for what I was planning on ordering. When I checked in, I was handed a buzzer and asked to wait. While I was waiting there appeared to be a bit of commotion at the restaurant. Apparently, one of the servers had slipped and injured herself in the dining area and medics had been called! After a few minutes of waiting, my buzzer went off and I was seated. The server was still sitting on the ground being treated by the medics but within a few minutes of me being seated she was escorted out. She was able to walk out with assistance so I hope she wasn’t seriously hurt!

My server came to the table, and I was ready to order. Honestly, from reading reviews of this place, I didn’t even need to look at the menu, I knew exactly what I wanted.

Grilled cheese and tomato soup!

49.jpg

So yummy! I had told myself beforehand that I would only eat half the grilled cheese to save room for dessert, but it was so tasty that I almost finished it. I don’t know what the combination of cheeses was; one seemed to have herbs in it maybe? At any rate, I was a big fan. The server came back to take my dessert order, which was another easy choice.

No Way Jose!

50.jpg

So, so delicious and worth the hype! I was only able to eat a little over a third of it, though. It was enormous! I hate wasting food, especially delicious food, so I was very sad to have to leave this behind. I settled the check and headed out. Overall, I would say Beaches & Cream was a winner. Normally, I am in the parks all day, so a resort restaurant usually doesn’t make sense, especially near Epcot when there are already so many good food options in the park. But I might consider eating here again for lunch on a Hollywood Studios day, as that’s not necessarily a full-day park for me right now. The only damper was that my server was initially not friendly at all. She warmed up as the meal went on (after I ordered dessert), though. I’m wondering if maybe she was just shaken up by her colleague being injured, which is totally understandable.

My timing was great as a boat going towards Hollywood Studios was pulling up just as I walked up the pier outside of Beach Club/Yacht Club. Normally, I would walk to HS from here, but I was trying to save my feet in anticipation of the next morning.

As close to Hollywood Studios as I was going to get on this trip:

51.jpg

I waited about ten minutes for a bus to POFQ and ended up being the only passenger!

Back in my room, I set out my goodies from the day for closer inspection. I really, really like the half marathon tank and the half marathon race shirt.

52.jpg

I got flat Cherie prepped for the early morning.

53.jpg

By then, I was started to feel really exhausted and kind of iffy from this bug I was fighting and my ears were starting to clog up a bit. Dosed myself with more Airborne and was in bed by 7:45. 10K in the morning!

Excellent choices at Beaches & Cream, exactly what I would have gotten! I agree with you, the No Way Jose is enormous!!

looking forward to your 10K recap! :)

Love AK! You had an awesome day there. I have never eaten at beaches and cream but have gotten ice cream plenty of times. No way Jose is the best!

Can't wait to hear about the races!

Day 2 – Saturday, November 5 – Wine & Dine 10K

My alarm went off at 3 am and I popped out of bed. I didn’t feel tired at all but my head felt a bit congested.

I got myself dressed and ready, including the matching sweaty band and KT tape I had bought at the expo the day before, and was out the door at 3:40.

1.jpg

The bus was waiting when I walked up and we waited a few minutes for it to fill up. We pulled out of POFQ about 3:50 and we dropped off at the start area at about 4. Bag check was quick and easy. Once I got to the main staging area, I saw massive lines for the character meets. I hoped into the line for Lumiere, which was by far the longest. I figured out within a few minutes that I was most likely not going to make it to the front in time, but I didn’t really have anywhere else I needed to be, so I decided to wait it out and see how far I could get. At about 4:40, I bailed on the line to take care of bathroom business. After 30+ mintues of waiting, I was still nowhere near the front. I knew that post-race, these character meets would need to be priority #1. At about 5, the corrals opened up and I made my way into Corral A.

2.jpg

It was my first time in corral A for a Disney race, so it seemed weird to be so close to the start line.

3.jpg

Remy came up to the stage to help get things started and at 5:30 we were off.

4.jpg

My plan for the race was to run fairly fast (but not too crazy, given that I still had a half marathon the next day) and stop for lots of character pictures. I told myself that I would stop for every character picture but allowed myself to make exceptions if: (1) I had met that character during a previous Disney race or (2) I had no idea who they were. I also decided to stop and take pictures of every mile marker to help me relax and enjoy the course and experience more and to help me remember to stay in the moment.

5.jpg

The first mile was a basically a straight shot down the highway. No characters in this first mile, so I was pretty surprised at how fast it went by.

6.jpg

Just after the first mile marker was the first character meet. It was the penguins from Mary Poppins but not Mary, Bert, or the chimney sweeps. The set-up was cute although the picture was a little weird solo since there was another empty chair in the shot.

7.jpg

Immediately after the picture there was a sharp turn and the steepest climb of the course up an overpass. This section of the course was probably also the most crowded that I experienced since more and more people had caught up as I stopped to take various pictures, but it wasn’t too terrible.

Just a little ways down the road, I came upon the second character stop, Flik and Atta. I love the giant plant life behind them!

8.jpg

Waiting in this character line was a women wearing a super cute Joy (from Inside Out) costume, complete with blue wig and carrying a "memory". I ended up waiting with her at several character stops along the way. I’m not sure what the memory was made of, but apparently she was pretty sick of carrying it by late in the race. It was definitely an awkward size to hold in your hand but the costume looked great!

Just a short ways up the road was the Mile 2 marker.

9.jpg

With two character stops, Mile 2 was a good bit slower than Mile 1. The entirety of the next mile was highway with not much in the way of entertainment. I felt these first couple of highway miles were actually a little bit treacherous in the dark. In places there seemed to be loose gravel and weird pieces of medal, almost like bits of coat hanger? Definitely my least favorite mile of the race. As a result, I picked up the pace a good bit and pretty soon passed the Mile 3 marker.

10.jpg

I was ready for some better scenery and park time!

Excellent choices at Beaches & Cream, exactly what I would have gotten! I agree with you, the No Way Jose is enormous!!

looking forward to your 10K recap! :)

So delicilous! My usual Disney travel partner doesn't like peanut butter with her chocolate :sad2: so I'm glad I tried it this time, even if I did have to leave so much behind!

Love AK! You had an awesome day there. I have never eaten at beaches and cream but have gotten ice cream plenty of times. No way Jose is the best!

Can't wait to hear about the races!

I've grown to love AK more and more over the years. I was sad that I didn't get to stay after dark on this trip (I don't think I've ever been there past about 4:30 pm) but am looking forward to the nighttime offerings on my next trip. Running through AK during the half was a nice mini preview! :D

So looking at my husband's splits - you must have run close to him for that first mile and possibly the first 5K as he crossed at 5:57:21 (26:25)

Good job for slowing down and enjoying the race though!

That's awesome that you were in corral A! I was in B for the WDW 5K last year that's the closest I've been.

Looks like a great first 3 miles!

I was around her a lot too (and probably you too it seems as our mile markers go back and forth, but I only stopped for 3 stops). She told me what it was but I can't remember, but yeah she looked great! That tank caught my eye too but I resisted. Love all your AK pics too!

Oh, nice! I crossed 5K at 5:59:31. Did he stop for character pics or run straight through!

It was funny because the way the loaded the corrals we were in a holding area first and then moved up to the start line. I was sort of in the middle of the pack in the holding area corral but somehow ended up fairly near the front (maybe 5 or 6 rows of people back) when they moved us over to the start, so I had a much better view than usual (a big bonus since I'm quite short!). I definitely enjoyed not having to wait for other corrals to leave.

Oh my gosh! Too funny! There were definitely a number of people in both races that I kept seeing over and over. Maybe you were one of them! :teeth:
