food & wine part 2
we continued our walk & came upon the motherland.
i was very apprehensive with the kimchi dog. i love kimchi. i love everything about kimchi. and i'm not gonna lie...kimchi is an acquired taste & not for everyone. i figured this would be a watered down version of kimchi but i was so curious with the kimchi dog that i had to order it.
Kimchi Dog with Spicy Mustard Sauce - $3.75
and to my surprise & amazement, this kimchi dog was actually quite good. the actual hot dog portion tasted like kimchi & had a bit of heat to it. the coleslaw was a nice accompaniment that cooled down the heat from the spice of the hot dog. given, in no way does it taste like the kimchi i eat but for something produced for the masses, i thought it was really well done. this was my second favorite bite of food from the festival. i only wished they gave me the entire hot god. two bites and the thing was gone.
we made it to mexico & stopped by to say hello to one of our favorite furry friends.
donald was so stinkin cute in his outfit. we always get the best photos with donald & he is such an awesome character meet & greet. i've yet to meet a grumpy donald. we finished with world showcase as we finally reached mexico. i wanted to give world showcase a little break & explore epcot some more.
we made it over to innoventions & after some games & enjoying the air conditioning, we got our chase visa picture taken.
to those not familiar with the chase visa meet & greet: if you have a chase bank or credit account & have your debit or credit card, head over to innoventions for an exclusive meet & greet. you are given a voucher which gives you a
FREE 5x7 picture at the character meeting. the characters are either mickey/pluto/minnie/goofy in a pair. you are allowed one voucher per day. this is a FANTASTIC deal as everything is so ridiculously expensive at disney that something
FREE is a deal you cannot pass up!
we continued the meet & greet at the epcot character spot.
after the character meet & greets, i decided to try world showcase one last time. emme asked for the ravioli but it would be a herculean task to make it back over to italy. i used the same strategy as before...approach any booth with a somewhat short line.
up first:
and my choice:
Trickn Chickn Curry with Basmati Rice featuring Gardein Chickn Breast - $3.75
i really wanted to like this but the entree was cold. whenever i make a veggie pattie, i like to pan fry mine so it's crispy on the outside. the gardein chicken patty was cold which made it obvious that it really wasn't chicken (does that make sense?). the curry had a very mild flavor but it definitely wasn't memorable. emme ate all the basmati rice & sadly enough, the basmati rice was the best part of the snack.
we continued our walk through the ridiculous crowd. how ridiculous you ask?
this ridiculous:
and this wasn't even crowded compared to other parts of world showcase!
the next booth with a "short" line was:
i chose 2 options from brazil:
Seared Scallop with Ragout of Tomatoes, Peppers, Hearts of Palm and Steamed Rice
note that this was suppose to be a "seared" scallop. there was nothing seared about this scallop at all. however, the scallop was a nice size for the price. there was certainly a quality control on this day at f&w...too many people wanting to stuff their faces & therefore, food wasn't prepared correctly, i can't comment on the taste of the non-seared scallop as emme decided to pull back the canopy of the jogging stroller and the entire scallop dish fell on the floor. everything happened in slow motion...and i said 'NOOOOOOOOOO' as the scallop fell to the floor.
good thing i had a second option:
Crispy Pork Belly with Black Beans, Onions, Avocado and Cilantro - $5.25,
again, there was quality issues with this dish. the pork belly was cold as was the black beans. i love pork belly & the fat of the pork belly does unappetizing things when it turns cold. the meat turns tough (kind of like jerky) & it does not have a nice mouth feel. the black beans were flavorful & emme enjoyed it with the rice. black beans & rice is one of her favorite things to eat.
brazil...you get two thumbs down from me. i'm willing to give brazil another try this year but there was nothing memorable about both these dishes...other than the fact that my scallop plummeted to the ground, uneaten.
my next stop was australia (sorry, no menu photo).
i chose:
Garlic Shrimp with Roasted Tomatoes, Lemon Myrtle and Rapini - $4.50
the shrimp was nice & large. they were perfectly cooked & very tender. however, the rapini was the most god awful thing i have ever tasted in my life. it was putrid. i have no idea how they cooked it but it was overly bitter & absolutely disgusting. i actually had to spit it out and rinse my mouth out with water. i was pretty sad about the rapini & australia overall as last year the booth had my favorite bite with the lamb & potato crunchies.
i paired my shrimp with a refreshing beverage:
Rosemount Estate Pinot Grigio $2.50
i decided that i needed another beer to remove the memory of the rapini from my mouth.
there was no wait at the window and i was happy to have a semi-decent beer.
Sam Adams Seasonal Beer
we continued our dreadful walk through world showcase (it was so packed!) & made a stop to see the drummers in japan.
italy was slammed so no ravioli for emme.
we continued our walk in the hunt for our next snack. where did we stop next???
