Restarting closed threads....

There is a rule on the DIS that you cannot restart closed threads. That's all well and good.

What if the thread that was closed was also removed so there is no trace of it left behind. How are you supposed to know that there was a thread so that you don't bring up the topic again?

You don't. But there are guidelines as to what content is allowed. If you start a thread violating those guidelines, the thread will again be closed and/or removed.

What if it is a topic not in the guidelines?

How can you avoid an infraction in this case?

If you think it's a subject that could be controversial, then I'd say - don't start the thread.

If you are unsure, but want to give it a shot, go ahead. If it's not allowed, it will be removed.

Common sense and personal responsibility works well here.

You can also try PM'ing the moderators of the board that will host the thread to see if they can give you any guidelines about why the thread was deleted and if you can create a new thread on that topic. If the thread was deleted because of the topic, then I doubt they'd say go ahead and create another one. If, on the other hand, the original thread was deleted because the conversation went off-topic and got mean-spirited, then it might be okay because the original thread wasn't closed due to the thread's topic, but rather the posting by some people.

What if you never knew there was a previous thread in the first place?

Are we supposed to check with the moderators before we start a thread on any topic to see if there was one that was closed and removed and therefore now banned?

If you didn't know that there was a thread created previously and have no reason to think it's going to be a controversial thread, then there shouldn't be any reason to worry about creating a new thread. If you're asking about starting a thread, with a tope that you think is going to be controversial/infraction-worthy, then I would ask the moderators regardless of whether you think there might have been a thread previously or not. Basically, as PrincessShmoo said, it comes down to common sense.

A thread was started on topic X. Topic Y was brought up in the thread - it is tangentially related. For whatever reason, topic X turned unfriendly and the mods closed and deleted the thread. Can you start a thread on topic Y? What if you never knew about the thread on topic X? What does common sense tell you?

Common sense tells me that if you think the topic is going to be controversial or infraction-worthy, don't bother starting a thread about it. It doesn't matter if it's been brought up or not before.
