Recommendations for Beach area in Cocoa Beach/Cape Canaveral

We are arriving early afternoon the day before our cruise. Being New Englanders we don't get to enjoy the ocean too much here as it stays in the 60s in the summer months.

One thing we would like to do is go to the beach in Cocoa or Cape Canaveral. Is there an area that has good access and parking that is easy to get to from the Residence Inn?

My kids...especially DS doesn't like the ocean because he "thinks" it is cold. It would be great to break his stigma before we even get on the ship.

There is a Family beach 5 min from Residence Inn called Cheri Downs. It has bathrooms, showers and life guards (summer), and Free parking.

You could always head up to the Cocoa Beach Pier, they have a lifeguard as well
