As a true Disney Cruise fan I have decided to try the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line - sorry Disney! This was a last minute decision and Disney prices do not fair too well with last minute bookings. My question is, on the Explorer of the Seas, is there a charge for the kids to play in the arcade room? If so, approx. how much is it?
Thanks

I can't answer your question for sure but I'm thinking it's a pretty safe guess that you would have to pay for the arcade.

I have never been...but my brother just came back and from what he said, they set up a few of the games at a time to be free for the kids. But only during certain times of the day. There was no charge for admission to any of the clubs(and the activites in the club were free)...part of your booking...but if a kid wanted to do some of the activites on their own it sometimes came with an additional fee. Hope that helps some!

If you don't get your answer here, you'll be able to get your answer on the Cruise Critics boards (they were the ones who referred me to these Dis boards). I have to say we'll probably have to switch to RCCL for future cruises due to costs. The first RCCL cruise I took was nice but I thought too much about things I preferred on Disney. By the second, I was used to it and missing Disney a little less. I'd be curious to hear your opinions.

There were some arcade games onboard when I sailed RCI in August, but my children never played them. Just as on Disney, there is a charge. The Adventure Ocean program offers a lot of fun games and activities for children. All mine loved it.

Thank you for all of your help! I am a little nervous switching from Disney to RCCL, but I've heard so many good things about them, I just had to try it. Plus the cost for a 5 night cruise for four (ocean view room) was only 2200 (US dollars). I'd rather give the kids a cruise for Christmas than a ton of toys they really don't need. I'll let you know how the trip went.

Your going to love RCCL! WE have been on RCCL 3 times, and never have been disappointed...even compared to DCL!! Have a great time!

Have been on 4 DCL cruises since 2002, but doing 2 RCCL cruises in '07, actually w/i a month of each other, one w/ DS and one w/o but w/ another couple (we cruised w/ them our first ever cruise, on RCCL, in '01). Cost was a factor, indeed--but so was itinerary available for a 4 niter.

I think w/ the other cruise lines you have to research the ships--some are older, some have much smaller rooms (generally, DCL rooms are larger than the peers on other ships, but then the $ is higher). There is a difference, and I expect that, but that doens't make RCCL a bad vacation--just not a Disney vacation. Is every land based vacation you take Disney? Sometimes you go Disney, sometimes you don't (for those addicts who only go Disney, okay, I know you're out there, I'm not flaming or DIS-sing you, but IMHO many people have some measure of variety in vacations).

Exporer, I believe, is a Voyager class ship? Wonderful for families, it will be a wonderful trip. We're doing the Radiance, and then w/o DS on the Enchantment, which simply was about as good a ship for a 4 niter as I could find that wasn't called Wonder and was spending time in the caribbean and not the Bahamas. The Wonder advantage is I believe it is the finest ship sailing 3 and 4 night cruises.

If there is something you notice that you miss about DCL, then you have to assign that feature a value...and determine if next time, you are willing to pay the difference for DCL...and willing to accept the itineraries available. I'm not gone for good--I have a late '06 booked on DCL, though I suspect I will want to move that to '07 when the dates open up--I want to go w/ the characters one more time before DS gets too old.

DCL reads the boards, they know about guests like us, and they have done their calculations and decided to do what they are doing. w/o expanding just yet. But since the Magic and Wonder aren't too empty, I think they're feeling good about things.

went on the explorer last year. DCL sucks by comparison. Explorer is a beautiful ship and the ice show is not to be missed. The games in the arcade work off your seapass card, you put however much you want on it. Games are more expensive than on land, but the amount to choose from are more than on disney. RCCL is the better choice by far

I'm not a smoker and I've heard they allow smoking in the staterooms and that's a big turnoff for me and why I've stayed with Disney

I'm not a smoker and how no trouble with smokers on RCCL. The ship allows smoking on only one side of the ship outside and I just avoided that side of the ship when walking around. Our stateroom did not smell of smoke and that is something I am very sensitive to. OTOH, our inside stateroom on Disney had a cigarette burn mark on the desk and one on the sink in the bathroom so even though guests are requested not to smoke inside, they do. It did not smell of smoke either so I am sure there is something the stewards use to refresh the air.
We had a great time on Explorer and hope you do too.

Just did a 4 day on RCI Empress and smoking is allowed in the staterooms. My brother and SIL were next door to us, and you could smell her smoke thru the walls, and also in the hallways. That said, we did enjoy the cruise, tho I still prefer Disney due to the larger staterooms, multiple pools and restaurants. This ship had only one pool, very small. The voyager class is supposed to be spectacular, so we are considering another RCI for next year.

Hi,

I will always have a special place in my heart for DCL, but I have to admit I am very big RCCL fan. I would love to go on the Freedom of the Seas in the future.....but, I have to say that for the price I prefer to sail RCCL. You'll like RCCL and I think their repeat cruiser benifits are better than DCL. I can't wait to get 5 cruises under my belt with RCCL, so I can get more benifits. :)

Mmketeer....next cruises: RCCL/Granduer 12-17-05 & DCL/Wonder 2-2-06

DCL- Wonder & Magic
RCCL- Mariner & Enchantment
CCL- Fantasy & Miracle

I saw a lot less smokers on RCI than I had on Disney. Of course, each week on each ship is different. But, don't let the smoking issue scare you.

Wow! I sure am glad to read all the positive comments about RCCL. We're scheduled for our first RCCL cruise spring break of 2006. (It was over 2000.00 less than DCL, and for a larger room.)

DCL, if any of your CMs are reading these posts, look how many cruisers you're losing to RCCL. :guilty: I guess though, as long as they continue to fill the ships, they don't care. :confused3 :confused3

On a more positive note, it looks as if we'll be able to take a cruise each year if the prices are right. (And look at all of the itineraries RCCL has to offer!) :sunny:

From all of your posts, it sounds like RCCL is comparable to DCL. I am not a smoker, so I do hope we do not run into any "smoking issues." On our last DCL trip we did have someone next to us who did smoke, which made sitting on our verandah unenjoyable. I'm not against people who smoke, I just don't want to smell it!
Firegoalie23: How do we get the tickets to see the ice show? I would be really interested in seeing that.
My question to Disney is, why are their cruises so expensive? Yes, they have amazing staff, service etc., but they also don't have as many of the attractions that other ships have. I guess my point is since they don't have to finance a casino, shopping mall, rock climbing wall, golf course etc., couldn't they lower the price a little. If they did, perhaps they would not loose as many customers to RCCL as they appear to.
I'm not trying to make any enemies out there, just thinking.....

We really wanted to book the Freedom of the Seas, so I contacted RCCL's customer service to see what they do for people that would not be able to occupy a cabin that had been smoked in due to a medical condition, assuming that I can't be the first passenger with this problem. I wasn't worried about avoiding it outside of the cabin, just inside. RCCL's response, "Sorry you won't be able to sail with us." :rolleyes2

We took our 1st non Disney cruise on RCI this past May. I really do not like the smell of stale smoke in a room. I was surprised I did not have an issue with this at all. I also did not have any issues on deck and even the casino was milder then I expected. But we really did not like RCI as well as DCL, the ship was beautiful and well cared for but did not have the bouncy happy crew members. Food was just as good, but did not like the pushy "want a drink" we kept getting. I would sail again but only if the price was terrific and ports I really wanted to see. When we got to the Wonder in August we really felt like we were home and we had not been on her since 2000, sailed the Magic other times. We are sailing in Dec. on Carnival and will be following the Magic on the Western, I'm sure I will cry when I see her sitting next to us. The cruises on RCI and Carnival cost at least half the price of DCL. Our Carnival coming up was $499/7 days for an IS guarantee. So far we have gone from an inside cabin, to an oceanview cabin and yesterday it changed to a balcony, in our 6 cruises with Disney we have never gotten an upgrade. We have #7 booked on DCL for August, but it may be our last if the cost keeps going up and new ports are not added, I don't consider going to CC twice a great change.

I didn't enjoy RCCL on our cruise, although I loved Alaska. I think I went into it with much higher expectations than I should have. I really wanted to have the DCL experience at the RCCL price, and that just didn't happen. The entertainment wasn't anything like DCLs. The food wasn't as good, nor was the staff. The kid's clubs hours were difficult to keep up with, and cost extra after 10. The kids were not supervised as well as on DCL.

I did cruise this past summer in Hawaii with NCL and found that with lowered expectations, I enjoyed that cruise just as much as my DCL cruises. In fact, we've booked another NCL for next April. DCL has just gotten out of what I am willing to pay.

We are considering a family trip on RCCL's Mariner, so I haven't ruled them out. I'll just go into it expecting less.
