Thursday May 4. There we were at Downtown Disney long about 6:00 and ready for Wolfgangs Upstairs. We'd been there a few trips back and had a fine meal--we were looking forward to this return.
As soon as we walked in I knew someting wasn't right. Lots of buffet style food tables set up, and lots of dressed up folks partaking of same. We walked over to the stairway where you check in for the upstairs dining and found no one there. We stood around and waited a bit, figuring maybe they got a late start or something. Then a lady manager spotted us and walked over. As soon as I said that we had ADR"s for 6:00 PM, she frowned and said that "That isn't possible--the restaurant is booked for a private party the entire evening". When I said that I was sure we had Adr's, she frowned yet again and said " No. The restaurant has been booked for several months".
When I said we'd made our ADR's at least 3 months ago--yet another frown. I began to get the feeling she wasn't believing anything I had said.
But then Uncleromulus played his ace in the hole. Not only did I have my confirmation # with me, I had it IN WRITING, on the printout we had gotten upon checking in at OKW. There it was in black and white, on official Disney stationery, and only a few days old!!
That changed everything. She went back to the podium , punched in several sets of numbers, frowned yet again, and then became very apologetic. Sorry it happened, no idea why we weren't called, we could be seated in the regular Pucks cafe section. We weren't really in the mood for burgers or meatloaf, so Mrs Uncleromulus (rather loudly, I may add) suggested we might be trying Portobello Yacht Club if we could get in w/o an ADR. Then the lady redeemed herself completely--she immediately got on the phone, called Portobello, and made "manager-to manager" reservations for us. And that's where we wound up eating that nite. In our case that was pretty satisfactory-Portobello is a fine place and we hadn't been there in some years. But I can see how what happened to us could have been very disappointing, IF we hadn't had a fall-back spot and IF we hadn't been able to get in to Portobello.
So what's the moral of all this? Realizing that from time to time entire restaurants are booked for the entire evening and you may not be made aware of it. So having the ADR # handy is a great idea, and if you are staying at a WDW resort, getting a printout of your ADR's is even a better idea.
