PS3 disconnecting from the internet

I am pretty much clueless about this so if anyone can help, I would greatly appreciate it.

My son purchased a used PS3 (40GB) from Gamestop almost 30 days ago. He seems to get disconnected quite frequently when he plays online and is getting very frustrated. We have rebooted our router but that didn't help. We read about NAT 2 and his is set up that way. We never get disconnected from our computers and my DD never has a problem using Wifi with her iTouch.

Is this something we can fix or is there a problem with his PS3? He has one week left to return it for a full refund or exchange it for another one. He has also saved up enough money now that he could buy a brand new one if the problem has something to do with the older version. His friends say they get disconnected once in awhile but not nearly as often as my son does. They all have the newer models.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When ours did this is was a problem with the wireless router not the PS3. We upgraded our router and haven't had trouble since.

Go into network settings and run a system check on the ps3. It'll tell you exactly what is happening, which point you are being dropped at.

About a month ago we were having some problems, we ended up password protecting our Internet connection. For us, it was someone, actually two other someone's that were logging in through our router. That made us lose our connection when they hooked up. Also if too many people are online in my house it drops off.(which to me is a router issue)

Thanks for the ideas!

Does it make sense that it would be a router issue if our four computers stay connected?

I looked under network settings and didn't see anything that allowed me to run a system check. I went through all the different settings, as well. My son isn't home but I will have him look when he gets in.

The way I understand it, the PS3 uses a lot of ?bandwidth? (not sure if that's actuallly the correct term) which when you have multiple devices running it can't get enough to stay connected. We have 2 laptops, 2 PS3's, an i pad and 2 i pod touches running on our new router without trouble where as with our old router 1 laptop and 1 PS3 was causing drop issues

Thanks! Would you mind sharing what router you are currently using?

I'm wondering, also, as we are having the same problems with our wireless router, and being dropped with 3 laptops and 2 ps3s. Interested in seeing what kind of router you have now.

We had the same problem when we got the PS3 a little over a year ago. The PS3 requires a "static" IP address (fixed) that must be coded into your wireless router's setting. Call your wireless router company and they will help you set that up. We have a Linksys wireless router (not sure which model) and kept losing the signal when too many devices were using "dynamic" IP addresses. The Linksys rep was very helpful in getting our PS3 back online for good. Good luck!

We bought a Linksys E4200. It was spendy at $179, but the improvement has been worth it.

We bought one this afternoon and installed it, and have noticed how much faster and smoother everything has been running. After such an easy install, I was scratching my head waiting for the other shoe to drop!:lmao:

Thanks for the suggestion!
