Plantar Fasciitis - Should I Rent a ECV?

Hi, everyone. I suffer from a pretty aggressive case of plantar fasciitis. I recently had a MRI and they found a 7mm tear in the plantar fascia. My doctor is sending me for 4-6 weeks of physical therapy. However, we leave December 19th. I am a teacher and my foot kills me by the end of the day at school. I am just wondering if I should rent one. The problem is that I am traveling with my parents and my mom rents a scooter. The problem is that we stay in 1 room at POFQ and I am wondering if we can fit two in a room. I'm just not sure what to do. Any info/thoughts would be appreciated. TIA! :)

My mom and I stayed at POFQ a few years ago. We both used a scooter and it worked fine. It was tight in the room but we were able to make it work.

Sounds like you will need a scooter. It's a lot of walking and standing. Depending on your mom's needs you might be able to alternate using the scooter. Could you both handle walking a half day at the mall multiple days in a row? If so alternating throughout the day could work. On the other hand, a week resting your foot may help it heal faster.

You can also ask then to take out the table and chair to give you more room

You can rent a scooter every day at the park, and then return it to the rental area. You don't have to bring it back to your room.

Also, I would see a podiatrist (foot specialist), not a regular doctor. I have had plantar fasciitis from running, and my podiatrist immediately prescribed orthotics as the best treatment. Orthotics are custom-made arch support insoles to wear in your shoes.

I got my orthotics this summer, and went for a theme park trip in September. I've started running again, and I feel that my injury is close to 100% healed. Good luck.

I believe scooters are the way to go for the both of you. If you want more room in your resort room you can ask for the table to be removed from your resort room. That will make it easier to fit both scooters. It's not necessary to do this, but it is easier.

When taking bus transportation back and forth from the parks with 2 scooters you may run into a situation where there will only be room for one of your scooters on the bus depending who is in line with you. You can choose to wait for the next bus; so, you can be together.

You can as suggested already to rent at least one scooter at the park. Then, you won't have to worry about your resort room space. The park scooters cost more and you won't have that scooter at the resort. Also, it's best to be an early riser and get to the park if you are renting there.

I feel the cost of the scooter is well worth it. You won't be in pain and you will probably enjoy the parks for a longer period of time.

DH and I both rent ECV's and we asked bell services where to park them. We were told to just park in the hallway outside our room at the Grand Floridian. We kept the keys with us so we didn't have to worry about theft.

Another idea would be to have the hotel store one or both ECV's in their luggage room over night.

Yes, that going to hurt. And hurt more and more as you walk on it. You will not have fun if you walk

I wouldn't count on being able to rent a scooter at the parks during a busy time of year. They only have a limited number to rent, so you might find they don't have one available when you need it. I'd rent off-site - it's much cheaper, and you know you'll have it when you need it.

Regarding whether to get one or not, I totally would! If you're in pain at the end of a normal school-day, you'll be in even more pain walking all day. Know that you can park the ECV if you want, and do some limited walking, too.

Good luck with your trip!

Im in the same boat as you. Been told I have PF in both feet as well as bone spurs. Was given a boot to help with walking but honestly I think it hurts just as much or more with the boot on. I am not looking forward to Disney in a wheelchair.........but I also dont want to be frustrated, grumpy, and in pain, and not enjoy my vacation. So I'm giving in. We leave Wed and will be there til Sun. I hope you enjoy your trip.

Plantar fasciitis needs rest in order to heal. How could you possibly rest your feet walking at Disney???

Yes, you need an ECV. Rent one from an off-property vendor so that you can have it at the resort. You truly need an ECV. I hope your feet are feeling better so you don't have to deal with too much pain!

and try and fill water bottles up and freeze, so when you return from a day with swelling and pain in the feet, you have that frozen water bottle to roll your foot over. I regret not renting a scooter, i went back to the room and elevated my foot more than I figured. I don't know why I didn't give in and rent one, I regret it!

Thanks, everyone! I did end up renting one. I appreciate all the input.

I don't know if this is too late but I had the same problem you have along with heel Spurs a couple of years ago. I was put on prednisone along with physical therapy. You could ask about a prescription of prednisone. It does help the body facilitate healing.

Let me just say that I was a good girl and rode in a wheelchair for the first 3 days we were there. One day, my crew wanted to do the Wild African Trek so I put my boot on and off I went to MK while they were touring the savannah. I met up with them shortly after 1:30 at the hotel. We were going to HS that night to see the lights & I had talked to a lady that had been there the night before and said how crowded it was. So I told DH that I wasnt taking the wheelchair as I thought I could manuever the crowds better without it. When we were done there, we decided to go to MK since it was our last night there............we closed the park at midnight and by the time the night was done, my feet and calves were killing me. A quick look at the Garmin said I had walked over 13 miles that day..........4 days later, still very sore.

I had also been to PT for 3 weeks prior to going. Listen to your body

I'm a teacher's assistant and go to Disney at least once every 2 months. I wear in insert and yes, by the end of the night my heel is pinching but I can still walk on it. I also wear good support sneakers. I prefer Nike Pegasus. I would never dream of the hassle of a scooter for my heel. The doctor actually had me order my insert online as opposed to ortho office to save money. PowerStep ProTech is the brand

Bumping this thread: I've been suffering with plantar fasciitis for 9 months. Thought I could wear good shoes and do stretches to heal it for 6 months before I gave in and went to a podiatrist. 2 months in a boot did nothing. On my 6th week of physical therapy and still not getting relief. I have a trip to WDW in 2 months and reality is hitting me that I will need walking assistance. Has anyone ever used (and does Disney allow) a knee scooter? If I have my boot on for walks onto rides and use the knee scooter, it may be better for crowds as we are going the week of Easter. Thoughts?

I would not use a knee scooter at all for all day of Disney walking( it would be like kneeling all day yes there is a pad but it will not be enough

I suffered from PS for years, horribly and could never make it through a day at Disney. I finally ended up having cortisone injections and it took 3, but it worked. If that's an option i'd discuss it with the podiatrist. I agree that a knee scooter would not be a good option. You may be better off doing an off site rental. I have severe arthritis and had knee replacements in my mid 40s. Prior to that I rented ECV from off site vendors (much more cost effective) and would find parking in each "world" and walk around as much as I could, then ride to the next location. It lessened the walking but still allowed me flexibility and by the end of the day I truly needed to use it.
