Parents of the High School Class of 2017/College 2021

Well DD didn't get Homecoming Queen, but she doesn't mind. She is just really surprised and happy to be on Court. Got her hair done and now just hanging out waiting till it's time to get dressed and made up.

I was worried yesterday because she left school very stressed out- they were decorating and everyone wanted her to do the lettering for all of their signs so she felt overworked and underappreciated when the Student Council president got mad at her for not wanting to do literally everything. Then she felt hot and had a headache at work. I've had a cold this week and have been trying so hard not to pass it on. She pulled it together for the presentation at the game. She seems alright today, fortunately.

Congratulations to your DD! What a way to cap off senior year. My DD was nominated, but she didn't get quite enough votes to make the court. She was excited to just be on the ballot and considered it a big honor.

Well, coronation was pretty good, DD looked fabulous and I got a lot of great pictures before it started. But the actual event was a bit of a problem. All the couples had their little things planned for walking in- the girls walk in from one side, the boys from the other, and each couple does something cute. It's tradition. DD and her escort, both track runners, were going to pose like the start of a race. The King and Queen were going to start the Wave, as that is what the King does with the crowd at the halftime of every basketball game. Stuff like that. But, about 2 minutes before the start, apparently the freshman boy suggested they leave the girls in the lurch and all boys stay back and walk in as a group with the King. And that's what they did. So the girls walked out all by themselves, awkward, with the crowd murmuring and trying to get the emcee to stop, and any family that came to watch their boy walk in barely saw them in the group. It just left us disappointed and DD was steamed that her little moment to shine was just kind of weird. And the poor freshman girl that went in first, all alone with her crutches and standing there wondering what to do :(

I hope the dance is fun.

Crap. Kids are mean. How did some Freshman boy get so popular to talk all the boys into being jerks?

My daughters came in the mail yesterday- she orders dresses from china since they fit better- one of them still needs to be taken in because she doesn't have the chest to fill it out but for the most part they are good- she bought one for homecoming, one for senior banquet and one for senior awards. This is going to be a crazy year but will fly by. She is not into homecoming, its not all that big of a thing here- she is helping build the float (she has never before so she wants to get that in before she graduates!) but not going to the game, she is going to the dance. Her dress is a pretty casual dress, they don't get all that dressed up for homecoming-many boys show up in jeans and girls wear anything from pants to a casual dress.

We are in the south. Homecoming is a big deal here. Fortunately, I have a son so no hair, makeup etc. Boys do pay their dates share of the limo/bus and dinner and tickets so it ends up being almost as expensive as prom.

What company do you use? I bought my DD's prom dress from China last year and it was so poorly made that I spent almost as much in tailoring. It would have been cheaper just to buy off the rack here in the US.

She use shein.com for some- I will have to ask her what others she uses.

I don't know. It was one of those things where it probably seemed like a good idea at the time, like they thought it would be funny, and not meant in malice. They weren't thinking is the problem. The older boys apologized to the girls more than once. On a positive note, she said it was the most fun Homecoming dance she'd ever had, so I'm glad.

As far as Chinese dresses, we've bought one from babyonline on Amazon. The quality was fine, but the armholes were too tight and she was uncomfortable all night (this was a year ago). The bust was too big as well, but the way it was made you couldn't tell she wasn't filling it out.

My dd just texted me to say she was called down to the principal's office. She's a National Merit commended scholar!

She missed being a semi finalist by a few points. If we lived in about 30 states besides NJ she would have made it.NJ, along with Massachusetts and DC, has the highest cutoff score.

Sorry for the brag. I'm just so proud and happy.

You should be proud, that is amazing!

It sounds like everyone had a great week and weekend. One of my boys' girlfriends won Homecoming Queen, so he was excited. He is disappointed that no one refered to him as "The King" today.
He did complete Apply Texas over the weekend so let the games begin. His twin brother is having a difficult time. He can't decide on a major so he doesn't want to apply yet. He knows he will not be accepted to his dream school, so that is another issue. I am trying to be patience and understanding but it is becoming more and more difficult. Anyone else having this problem and if so, how are you handling it?

Anyone else have a senior who
will be auditioning for colleges, as in music or theater? DS is filming his monologues, dances, and songs this weekend in hopes of being accepted into one of the top musical theater programs. He needs to send the videos as "pre-screeners." If the schools like him and want him to audition in person, he'll do those mostly in February. His audition coach has narrowed down 14 schools for him to apply to. Some only admit 12 freshman each year into their programs, so it's best to apply to a lot! DS isn't stressed yes, so I'm not either! Anyone else going the audition route?

They are actually the Class of 2020. Which sounds cool. Second and last time doing this. Youngest decided to go to another school so no more parents guild or new paretnts guild probabbly. The kids are so different, both are smart but youngest tries so hard. Oldest just walked through high school with 90s. She is freshman in good college now and I'm really hoping she can handle workload.

No, if anything she'll just have to show her art portfolio if an art scholarship is a possibility. But good luck to your son!

My DD is the queen of procrastination. She has the application deadlines in her planner and see's absolutely no reason to complete and submit anytime before the deadline. Ughhhhhhh Couple of her friends applied this past summer (TX A&M) and have already received their acceptance notices. Personally, I think it would be nice to just breath and not worry about it but DD doesn't see things that way.

She is also all over the map on a major but I'm OK with that since most of them change multiple times once they get to college. I just want to make sure she picks a school that will give lots of options since she really is undecided. My DS did not declare a major until his Jr. year of college, he explored a lot and finally settled where we all thought he would (He's a Physical Therapist) but I'm glad he took an extra semester and explored. Better to have spent an extra 6 months -1 year in college than to walk out with a degree of no interest of useless in the working world.

Yep. Lots of kids in my son's class have been accepted already to A&M and others. Seeing all those pictures roll out on instagram is what finally lit a fire under him, I think. He will finish his fourth app tonight and then take a breather until the UC application opens.
