Our "It's a great VGT rate, let's just go" Eastern Caribbean cruise - Jan 24, 2015

Thursday - At Sea & Remy Champagne Brunch - January 29th.

I woke up at about 5 am but decided to go back to sleep. There had been some vibration in the stateroom overnight and it had woken me up off and on so I was still sleepy. We eventually got up at 8 am and ordered coffee from room service and sat on the verandah reading our books and enjoying the sound of the waves below us. :cloud9:

The temperature today was a little cooler and it was a beautiful sunny morning.

Mum said the vibration had made her feel a little queasy during the night. :sick: She doesn't usually have any problems with the motion bothering her at all, but we were going at a fairly fast speed to get to Castaway Cay from San Juan and I think the shimmy was probably from speed rather than seas. It was definitely very noticeable. ::yes::

We sat on the verandah enjoying the perfect weather until about 10:45 am and then started to get ready for our Champagne brunch at Remy at 11:30. We arrived right on time and they gathered those that were waiting in Meridian and led us in. :cool1:

Brunch started with a presentation by the chef and sommelier. They very kindly offered to bring in a seat for Mum so she was more comfortable for the presentation, which they do while everyone is standing. They served us Negro Ham and a glass of Tattinger champagne.

I had spoken with them earlier in the week after our Palo brunch and told them that Mum and Maureen didn't care for fish or shellfish, and they had adjusted their menu accordingly. Our server was Rajo from France and we got chatting with him. He used to be on the Magic in Palo and worked with our friend Susanna. He was very nice and a great server. Mo, Scott and I elected to have the champagne pairings and Mum paired hers with H20. :thumbsup2

Before I get to the food pictures, I have to say up front that there is NOTHING that I can type here that can explain just how delicious this meal was. :worship: (I would insert a drooling smilie if there was one) If you have a chance, my advice is – DO IT! Mum and Mo are not froo-froo food people at all. In fact, we had a discussion about cancelling this brunch as I wasn’t sure they would enjoy it, but once we had confirmation that they would adjust the menu, they decided they’d like to try it just once, and they loved it – Mum said she preferred it over the Palo brunch. So, if you are on the fence, my recommendation is to give it a try. :thumbsup2

Here was the menu for Scott and I - I don't think I took a photo of Mum and Mo's.

They poured us a glass of Tattinger Rose and brought some brioche bread with butter. They warned us that the rose had to last us through the next course too. Booo!! :laughing: It was delicious.

Bread!

First course was a tomato dish. It was a tomato puree with pieces of heirloom tomato on top, some onion and a small piece of black olive.

The table setting is just beautiful with fresh flowers and the cutest little salt pots.

Next was a Lobster and Mango dish topped with caviar for us. There was shredded lobster, with lobster pieces on top, and it was wrapped in mango.

Mum and Mo had a salad with quail eggs on top of an olive tapenade.

Next for Scott and I - Halibut sitting on a potato cream with a thai sauce underneath. This was paired with a Pommery Pop champagne. This champagne was in the cutest little bottle, but I forgot to take a photo!

Mum and Mo had the same thing, but with chicken.

Up next was Pork with a Cannellini Bean cream sauce and a piece of the Negro Ham that had been cooked to a perfect crisp. We joked it was probably the most expensive, and delicious, piece of bacon we had ever eaten.

Top view...just because.

this looks fabulous. We are on the fantasy May 2 sailing. So my take aways are get the tastings scheduled as soon as you can, do the brunches, and the ship moves at night. Having a person that was limited walking, was it difficult navigating the ship?

Definitely book any tastings you are serious about doing as soon as you can. I think the ship movement was just our location as I've never experienced it quite that bad before. Think the old type vibrating beds you used to get in motels. :) Mum didn't have any problems at all navigating the ship. We took elevators as much as we could, and she is able to do some stairs, just not a lot.

Sufficiently stuffed and happy from the 4 glasses of champagne :lovestruc we made it back to our rooms and went back to our perch on the verandah with our books. The weather was beautiful, a little cooler than yesterday and breezy but lovely and sunny.

We realized at 4:10 pm that our Italian cocktail tasting in La Piazza was at 4:15 pm! :scared1: We manage to scramble and got there just in time.

[URL=http://s168.photobucket.com/user/jennytrahan/media/Fantasy%202015%20Cruise/Thursday%20-%20At%20Sea%20and%20Remy/025.jpg.html]

OJ was the presenter, who was from Milan, was a total fashion diva, and was very funny. There had been a kids activity in La Piazza that hadn't ended yet, and he was stressed out from having to talk over the kids. (I did mention on my comment card that I thought it was bad scheduling to have children’s activities and an adult beverage seminar in the same place so close together, I'm sure it wasn't the first time the children's activity has run a little late). On top of that, they started playing the piano which almost put OJ into meltdown mode. :laughing: He grabbed himself a cocktail to soothe his nerves and carried on. :rotfl:

It was an interesting tasting, and one we'd never done before, but I don't think any of us really enjoyed the drinks particularly. The drinks were very unusual, and I hadn't even heard of some of them, so that was a nice experience. OJ said that they were all traditional Northern Italian drinks. A lot tasted very medicinal, which is no coincidence as for many years they were used for medicinal purposes. Not your average sip-on-a-yummy-cocktail taste though. :rolleyes:

Here they are all lined up. From left to right they are: Aperol spritz (this was the best of the bunch IMO but Mum and Mo didn't care for it, second was the glass with ice to pour in the premixed Campari and soda (in the cute bottle), third was Cynar, fourth was Grappa, fifth was Grappa infused with white chocolate, which was sweet, like a liquer, and was Mum and Mo's favorite. It was too sweet for Scott and I, so we gave ours to them and took their Grappa, which they didn't like at all.

I had never heard of some of them. Here are the bottles.

This was the Campari and Soda. I remembered attempting to drink these a lifetime ago when they were all the rage in the UK - time hasn't changed anything, it was still horrible! :crazy2:
[URL=http://s168.photobucket.com/user/jennytrahan/media/Fantasy%202015%20Cruise/Thursday%20-%20At%20Sea%20and%20Remy/027.jpg.html]

At the end AJ made us all an espresso with simple syrup shaken with ice (no alcohol) because he said it was such a traditional drink in Northern Italy. It was pleasant, and refreshing. We were talking to him after the tasting and he gave Scott and I a complimentary drink to taste. I don't remember the name, but again it was horrible! o_O :rotfl2: The session was absolutely made by AJ though, he had enough personality for two people. One of his funniest quips (when they turned down the lights) and in a completely outraged voice, "thank goodness this is bar not a hospital!" :rotfl:

Tasting over, we went back to our perch to read our books on the verandah for a while. Scott and I went down to the gift shops and bought a couple of Tervis Tumblers and a Christmas ornament.

We had a beautiful sunset again tonight. :goodvibes

Even though tonight was Captain’s Gala night, none of us were feeling like we wanted to wait until 8:15 pm and go to the main dining room dinner. Scott and I popped up to Cabanas to see what the menu was. It didn't have the lobster :sad2: (one of our favorites) but there were several of the items that were on the main dining room menu tonight and so we all agreed that we'd rather do casual in Cabanas. Scott went down to Enchanted Garden to let our serving team know we wouldn't be there and we got up to Cabanas at about 7 pm.

Scott had grilled shrimp and I had mushroom soup.

Partially eaten, sorry about that!
[URL=http://s168.photobucket.com/user/jennytrahan/media/Fantasy%202015%20Cruise/Thursday%20-%20At%20Sea%20and%20Remy/033.jpg.html]

Scott then had yellow fin tuna and I had parmesan crusted chicken and fettuccine.

We asked if we could order a bottle of wine off our wine package and although it took a little while to get it figure out, they were able to do that.

The servers were great and we had a really fun time. At one point there were about 7 of them around our table teaching us magic tricks and we actually taught them some we had learned earlier in the week. :wizard: There was a White Coat up there who was absolutely hilarious and the atmosphere was so much more relaxed than the main dining rooms. You'd never see a head server in the main dining room beat on Scott's arm because he tricked her with a trick, all the time howling with laughter. :lmao: I had to say it was a refreshing change and we really enjoyed our time up there. One of the servers also made Mum a paper napkin rose but I forgot to take a photo of it!

We had another cow trick, but not the same as the one downstairs.
[URL=http://s168.photobucket.com/user/jennytrahan/media/Fantasy%202015%20Cruise/Thursday%20-%20At%20Sea%20and%20Remy/037.jpg.html]

And then the white coat came over and had Scott say the following list, starting at the top and repeating each word many times and then reading the list backwards. :laughing:

We finally left there about 8:30 and that was with about 45 mins of magic tricks. Reiza had been and left us this whale.

She also very rudely left us this! :oops:

We were in bed by 8:45 pm as we were exhausted and we had done nothing all day! We were definitely in relaxed cruise mode today. I think all of us were about as relaxed as we could be. :hippie:

During the night the ship had lots of vibration for several hours after we went to bed that shook the bed enough that it took me a couple of hours to go to sleep. It was just these two nights that we experienced it. I'd love to really know what caused it. :confused3

What a great day, it sounds like you all really enjoyed Remy, and it was nice that the menu could be amended for your mum and sister :)

That Italian cocktail tasting sounded a bit disappointing, I think we'll give that one a miss

Talk about a blast from the past ... Campari ... do you remember the old Lorraine Chase adverts with 'Have you flown in from paradise ? No, Luton Airport' from back in the 80's (lol) :rotfl2:

YES!!!!! See Mandy, this is why we NEED to cruise together! ::yes:: All I could remember was the last line! I should have known you would remember it! :rotfl:Mum didn't remember the advert at all, and Mo and Scott were both in the States so they'd never seen it and didn't know what I was going on about.

Actually at first I was getting mixed up with the Leonard Rossiter & Joan Collins adverts, but that was for Cinzano :rotfl::rotfl:

Friday – Castaway Cay – January 30th.

I was awake pretty early considering I hadn't slept well and so I pulled back the curtain so that we could see out while we were still in bed. It was just about to get light, so it was about 6:15 am. We finally got up a bit before 7:30 and ordered coffee and a bagel each. It was chilly for us this morning on the verandah at 66 degrees so we sat inside and put the bridge report on to check our progress and we were almost to Castaway Cay. Mum and Maureen went up to Cabanas for breakfast while we watched the seas through the verandah door.

There were several ships to our port side, I don’t remember seeing that much marine traffic close to Castaway Cay before.

All ashore on was 9:30 am so we had a while to sit and relax so I got caught up with my trip report and we watched as CC got closer and closer.

Pretend like that post isn't there...:rolleyes:

I think all ashore was more like 9:45 by the time they got docked. We watched them unload everything. You can tell that they do this a few times! :moped:

The new security place had people sitting in it already, so I was SURE that we would get to find out what this is really all about. SPOILER ALERT – Still not being used, and the people sitting in it just said it will be a security check. They were in it all day but doing nothing. :confused3

This was for some kind of drill they were doing, it looked like it would have been interesting to watch but not interesting enough to keep us from going off onto the island.:laughing:

Food heading off to Cookies. :thumbsup2

We got ourselves ready and headed out to deck 1 Aft. The line to get out was really long with people backed up the stairs and the elevators were almost impossible to get off. :scared: After 10 minutes we hadn't moved so we gave up and went back up to deck 3 and to midship. There were still lines but nowhere near as bad. We found out that the KTTW card scanners weren't working so they were having to check everyone off manually. (I wonder if this has something to do with the new security system being "almost" ready to go?) We made our way off the ship, picked up some towels and walked over to take the tram.

I wish our Bougainvillea would last all year, we get juuuuuust enough cold weather to kill them off.

We switched trams and headed for Serenity Bay. :beach:

People ask us why we sail on DCL even though we don't have kids. One of the reasons? Because they do THIS so well... ::yes::

We found a spot along the beach where we could park ourselves for the day and settled in.

The breeze made it a little chilly. Mum was quite cool and we had to eventually bundle her up with towels to make her comfy. You'd never believe she lives in England where it is so much colder! :rotfl2:

Scott ordered some beer for our soft cooler, and Mo and I ordered one of these little beauties. :drinking1

Even Scott had a towel blanket.

There was enough activity with the yoga and people making sandcastles - hadn't seen that on CC before either - to keep us occupied people watching! popcorn::

Maureen decided she was going to brave the cool water and went out to the sandbar. I dipped my toe in, but it was just too cold for Scott and I. There were plenty of people from the northern states that were in and enjoying it.

Remember how I said she does chilly better than me....living proof #2.

She spotted these two starfish that were fairly close to the shore. Now would have been a really good time to have that underwater camera....that was sitting in our cabin! :rolleyes2

We continued to relax on the beach until our tummies reminded us that it was lunch time, so at about 1 pm we went to the BBQ and had some salads, bbq ribs, burgers, fish and bratwurst. I also had some fruit, banana bread and an ice cream to take back along the beach.

It had warmed up a little bit and the breeze had died down, but that only last a little while and then the breeze picked up enough that I had to wrap up in towels for the last hour or so.

We decided to head back to do a bit of shopping along the way and come back to the ship. I bought a t-shirt that I had had my eye on when we were on the Dream in November. We made it back to the ship at about 3 pm.

This is the overhang that our cabins were under.

Our boarding passes, luggage tags and customs form were already in our cabin for us. At 3:30 the lines to get back onboard were pretty long.

Scott went up to Flos and grabbed a slice of pizza for 3 of us, Mum didn't have any.

I have to wonder how many towels they wash on CC day – anyone know have the answer to this random piece of trivia??

We kept our sail away tradition of watching all the activities port side and waving goodbye to the island cast members. :wave: Scott and I had taken a shower while we were waiting for sail away, so as soon as we had pulled away from the island we began the task of packing. I had read somewhere on the DIS about a tip to pack your dirty laundry as you went along, so we had kept a case under the bed that was easy to pull in and out to do that. It was a huge time saver for us. We always wear the clothes that we are going to walk off the ship in to dinner the night before, so we packed everything except the few things we would need overnight which go in our carry on.

It was a beautiful sunset and so we snapped a couple of photos from the verandah and decided to run upstairs to get some better ones. Our stateroom hostess, Reiza, was outside and we chatted to her for a little while and then had to run to get photos!:hyper:

The seas were busy with lots of other marine traffic out there. It was really windy up on deck 13 and there was nobody up there. We went straight back down to the cabin and sat on the verandah, Scott reading and me catching up (again) on my trip report. Reiza came in to make up our room so we shoved a few things around so that she could get it over with and we chatted to her again for a little while. She was a great stateroom hostess, she was quick, efficient and always seemed to manage to squeeze us in, even if we were just gone for a short while, so we were never waiting on her.

Dinner tonight was in royal court. We went down a few minutes early so that Scott could turn in his beer mug for a token. Table 93 was waiting for us.

Here are our servers for the week – great guys - food cutting incident apart.
:rotfl:

Bread! (Barely!)

They tried to decorate this side room – LOL

None of us fancied the appetizers tonight so we all had soup or salad.
I had cranberry salad, Scott had edamame and Napa cabbage salad.

We all had beef Wellington except Mum who had the vegetarian wild mushroom and onion strudel.

No drinks for Mum or Maureen and we finished out our wine package. I had baked Alaska for dessert, Scott had Apple pie.

Nooooooo !! We're on the last day already :( Lovely day on Castaway Cay, though hate knowing it's packing day too.

Thanks for Andrae's info :)

Loved the Cinzano link, the airline one is the one I always remember :)

Saturday - Disembarkation & Travel to Houston - January 31st.

This trip report feels like it's gone by as fast as the cruise did! :upsidedow

I woke up and could feel that we were heading into port. You know you've been on a cruise or two when you can tell that gentle rolling feeling of being in the shipping channel. :sail: I didn't want to get out of bed that early though, so I dozed off and on until I woke up again at 6:40 am and got up to take a look outside. Maureen had been up a bit earlier though and took this photo.

The Carnival sunshine had just arrived and was almost docked.

It looked like it was going to be a pretty day for all those that were going to be sailing away today. Lucky things!

I left the curtain open and hopped back into bed until the alarm went off at just gone 7 am. I had it set for 7:15 am but apparently they do them early, maybe just on disembarkation day? :P We got ready and finished packing the last of our things in the carry on and were ready by 7:30 am. We needed to be down for breakfast in royal court by 8 am so we still had a bit of time to kill and just chatted with Mum and Mo. We left a few minutes early, dropped off our comment cards, and were in Royal Court by 7:55.

Andrew took the last photo of us all at the table.

All of us had Eggs for the road and the service was fairly fast. I had bacon, Scott had bacon and ham.

The hash browns came out a little after, but still in time for us to eat them with our eggs.

At 8:30 am we said goodbye to our great servers, thanked them for all their hard work the past week, and headed out to join the throngs leaving the ship. :sad:
[URL=http://s168.photobucket.com/user/jennytrahan/media/Fantasy%202015%20Cruise/Travel%20to%20Houston/P1020389.jpg.html]

They were only letting people exit from the side entrance of Royal Court and we had to wait to get out of the restaurant for a little while. The line to exit off the ship was snaked around almost back to Animators Palate. It took us almost an hour to get off the ship and through Customs and Immigration, and that was without having to stop to pick up luggage, as we had done onboard check in, so we wouldn't have to mess with suitcases until we got to Houston. It was almost 9:30 am when we boarded our bus to get back to MCO.
[URL=http://s168.photobucket.com/user/jennytrahan/media/Fantasy%202015%20Cruise/Travel%20to%20Houston/P1020390.jpg.html]

Sigh....leaving so soon.:sad2:
[URL=http://s168.photobucket.com/user/jennytrahan/media/Fantasy%202015%20Cruise/Travel%20to%20Houston/P1020391.jpg.html]

The journey back to the airport went by fast. I checked Facebook and caught up with all the news that we had missed while we were gone. We arrived at our terminal at 11:02 am for our 1:13 pm flight. Security was pretty fast (faster than the ship!) and we grabbed some drinks and Scott and I grabbed a couple of sandwiches, and were at the gate by 11:20 am. We all got busy catching up with the real world.

This is where I finished catching up on my trip report, and my notes end. Our flight was on time and we made it home without any problems. Another great vacation with family and we all had such a fun time. Thanks to everyone that followed along with our adventures. :thanks:

In the meantime, I'll have to keep checking on those *GT rates......just in case. pirate:
