I have a front loader and have never had this problem.
However, my neighbor did have this happen, and had a lot of clothes ruined. Turns out, there was a defect in the washer drum. Because it spins so fast, the rough edges were causing holes in the fabric. She was able to get it repaired, and the store (Sears I think?) gave her gift certificates to replace the ruined clothes.
