I did not read the entire thread (I would need a shave) but I get the gist, and I think the whole discussion is ridiculous given the fact that it's against the park rules to take flash photography on these rides. Just as you are not allowed to smoke or bring drinks on these rides, no flash photography is a posted rule.

Maybe I should ignore the rules and light up a cigarette while on the ride. Let's see a CM catch me. By the time they stopped the ride and investigated, I would have ditched the cigarette. I don't care about other people. I want to smoke. I know it's against the rules, but since I know I can get away with it, I will do it.

I actually don't smoke but I think it's a good analogy. If you know something is against the rules and that it might disturb other people, but you still have no moral dilemma against doing it, then you are a selfish jerk. Simple as that. End of discussion.

3 guys who looked in there 20's I think, actually were smoking in a log in front of us on Splash Mountain once. Incredible! I tried to catch up with them when we got off, but they disappeared pretty quickly.

I'm one of those people that doesn't go nuts if someone takes pictures on a ride. I do it myself!! Everyone tell me what a horrible person I am!!

Anywho, if your granddaughter will feel more comfortable with a flashlight, go for it! She should be able to enjoy rides just like everyone else. I wouldn't worry about other people.

Enjoy!

Sadly, that fact is evident. :rolleyes1

Maybe stop the ride, shine a spotlight on the person, and have a booming voice come over the speakers saying "NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY!" in several languages.

Well, with Magic Bands, they could dock the 'photographer' $5 each time they do it. heh. Or lock them out of their room for 20 minutes when they return to their resort. Or have all the CM's greet them as "someone who doesn't follow the rules", or any number of fun things tied to their Magic Bands. :D Dock you a FP+, make it so you can't pull any FP's, make it so any time you scan your band it goes BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ - "NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY". etc. etc.

Any of those would be great! :thumbsup2

We were on POTC once with a "flasher" and some smart young men taught me what to do about it. The first time the lady flashed they said "1" loudly enough for her to hear, but not too loud. And it continued. "2", "3", by "4" I had joined in and by "5" she got the message and capped her lens. I will do that again next time.

This post did not get the love it deserved

BRAVO! I hope you are in my ride vehicle when this happens

Every dark ride has evacuation exits that are well illuminated. There are also CM's that monitor each ride by camera during the entire time the attraction is open. Every inch of the attraction is monitored. For those using flash photography, or even bright cell phones to record the attraction for that matter, the boat should be stopped and a CM should escort the offenders through the nearest evacuation exit. In addition to the statement saying NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY please, they should also add that violators will be escorted off of the attraction. Sounds a little harsh, but many, many people pay a whole lot of money to experience WDW, maybe only once in their lifetime and wait on many occasions long periods of time in long lines for an experience that can be adversely affected by obnoxious individuals.

Thanks to all who gave me suggestions regarding flashlights for my GD. To those who brought it up, I would never bring her kicking and screaming onto anything she is afraid of! She sometimes needs a little help in trying new things. glow bracelets it is.

First I am going to start this by saying I don't take pictures on rides. I will take one picture as we are boarding the ride before we get past the loading area(mainly so I have a record of what we did and when so I can write it down later) and then put the camera away. If I want a picture on the ride, there are many better places to get one then my own camera (and I even ask permission to use them in my personal photobook). I'm not going to get as good a picture as I can find elsewhere.

With that said - I searched on our last trip over Thanksgiving for these signs that are posted everywhere saying no flash photography and I found them on very, very few rides. They were not at the start of all dark rides. They were not in the ride cars. I did not hear the announcements that is proclaimed on here frequently. I actually did look for and was paying attention for this at times. I swear I am not unobservant but I did not see this bold blatent signage that gets thrown around here frequently.

I didn't ride all the dark rides but I can only remember seeing/hearing a sign/announcement on one or 2 rides. Several shows made annoucements about video lights but did not specifically mention flash photography. Some did mention flash photograhy but it was not as wide spread as it is made out here.

I'm going to count/list when I arrive for our trip on Sunday.

The announcement, "No flash photography, please. We spirits are easily frightened . . . " has been made at the beginning of the Haunted Mansion for several years.

Yeah.......But to be fair, it's HARD to hear that announcement when you are yakking on your cell phone.

Is it also a problem if a child brings a small flashlight for the dark rides. We were going to try that as my granddaughter is afraid, but I don't want to do anything to spoil someone else's experience. If that is the case maybe she could just wear glow necklaces and bracelets, but I thought the flashlight would make her more secure.

Yes it would, but a glow stick may be less intrusive but should help her with the dark =)

Exactly. I said I take photos on rides and other people didn't agree with me. So I was called obnoxious. All the times I've been to Disney, no one has ever asked me to stop or complained about it. Ive also been on many rides where people around me were taking pictures and I never complained. What a shock!

Clearly, some people think that being a member on Disboards makes them the Disney police. If a Cast Member was to tell me to stop, I would right away...but not other tourists. News flash guys, over 1,000 posts on Disboards doesn't give you entitlement!

It's really comical at this point...I knew this would happen.

So the signs and/or announcements from Disney at the start of the ride requesting no flash photography aren't enough to stop you, you need a Disney staff member single you out to tell you to cut it out?

I think things like this are why its so hard to enjoy places like WDW sometimes. Everyone feels entitled to do what they want, when they want, no matter who it may inconvenience or ruin an experience for. If we would all be just a little more considerate, how much more enjoyable would places where large crowds gather be? 90% of people that I ran into on our first WDW trip were great. Kind, considerate, etc. But, unfortunately there will always be that 10% who feel they are more important than others, or who rules don't apply to. If dark rides bothered my child, then we wouldn't ride. We'd wait until she was more comfortable with that type of attraction before we did.

:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

A flashlight might be a little annoying but maybe if the child kept the flashlight pointing down so that it isn't interfering with the ride.

Enjoy!

my husband has macular degeneration. he can't see well in the dark. esp. after being in the sunight.

so.. we save all the dark rides for night tine. at least his eyes have adjusted to the dark and he will actually be able to see something on the ride.

there are more people with this problem than you would think. who can only see things on the "dark" rides at night..

so we forgo going onthe rides at rope drop, or getting fast passes during the day.

then go on the ride when he finally can see the things on the ride. then.. suddenly.. NOPE!! shining light!!! flashlight next to him.

by the time his eyes can readjust to the dark, the ride is over.

a dark ride is supposed to be dark. some people wait a long time to be able to see the ghosts, etc in the ride.

ya know, the ride is SUPPOSED to be scary. there are some "not so scary" scary rides. (well, they did just take one away, snow white) but the haunted mansion is NOT in fantasyland. it is actually NOT a little kids ride. it is supposed to be scary. supposed to be dark.

if you have a little one who is not old enough, mature enough, or still afraid of the dark, then I guess this isn't the ride for them.. use the child swap.

if you think they are on the "edge", ie. they just mgiht like it, let's try it, then a little gow stick held down where only they can see it, is fine.

DARK rides are supposed to be DARK.

I don't like heights. or steep drops. you know what? I dont' ride roller coasters. I would reallylike to be able to experience the yeti (well, I guess alot of peopel would, but that's a whole dif. subject. lol).

I would also like to see the hologram ghosts in the hallways of tower of terror.

guess what , if you are afraid of something in the ride, you just bow out of it. you don't get to experience that.

I used to be an avid picture taker but he didn't even own a camera. [...] When I asked why he said you are missing the experience while taking pictures. My picture count went down after that but the enjoyment of experiencing the moment (not through a viewfinder) went up.

I would never strobe a dark ride ... except that ONE time on the Nemo ride when it broke down and I wanted to see that robot fish.

But anyway... I hear this sentiment a lot when some of my family see how excited I get about taking the camera to WDW. Different strokes for different folks I suppose but it's the same light coming into my eye whether it's through my viewfinder prism or not, except for that 1/250th second blink.

Taking up photography forces you to be always attentive to the world around you.

This is true... before DIS, you could be blissfully unaware of the BTG, you wouldn't have a strong opionon on things like people blowing bubbles in lines, getting out of line to go to the bathroom, whether or not you can 'save' spots at a parade, flash photography on rides, etc. etc.

But if you pre-load on DIS, you could arrive at DW ready to maim the first bubble-blower you see because you got into it with an online pro-bubble-blower!

I'm intregued-people have issues with bubble blowing? Seriously there are people in the world who don't like bubbles?

While I agree but just so you knoqw child swap can only be used on rides with a height requirment that they don't meet not any rides that someone is too scared to ride (like HM)
