Does anyone know if handicap parkers have to pay for parking at the Universal Hotels? Normally we don't pay anywhere else because we have the handicap sign. It's not right though. I've never seen a hotel that charges for parking other than Lowes. Not even Disney!!!

Hotels normally do charge for parking, it is just hidden in the cost of the room. The universal hotels just openly tell you the price.

Email the hotel and ask, mention about the disability badge and see what happens.

Thanks Kevin.

I figured I'd ask them as a last resort because I want to find out what others have experienced as guests. We stayed at the Hard Rock last year and had to pay because they had stolen our handicap sign. I didn't want to argue with them this time around.

I'm a Marriott Rewards member and asked them about the parking and they claimed to not even incorporate a parking charge in their base price because not everone drives to the hotel and it wouldn't be fair to charge those who don't bring cars. They said the parking is free as a service to their guests who are paying for a room. I think Lowes is just taking advantage of their themed status.. casinos, theme parks, etc..

I will say for the record though that if it weren't for the pool and food at the Hard Rock we'd probably stay in the Disney resort. We are visiting more of their parks this time around than Universals.

It must depend on which Marriot you stay at because they do charge for parking at some of their hotels. Orlando World Center is one of them.

We hae stayed at the Doubletree on Major Blvd and they charge a parking fee also

We have stayed at several Hiltons and Marriotts and all of them charged the per night fee if we had a car. Last year we stayed a week in Ft. Lauderdale and it was around $20 a night to park the car, valet only as well. So between the fee and the tips, ouch :lmao:

Since we are driving this time we will be paying the parking fee but I just figured that into my nightly room rate. :cool1:

Many hotels charge for parking, especially in big cities and resort areas. I know I've paid it in Nashville, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Diego, Miami, Orlando, etc, etc, etc.

Disneyland does. It has a similar space problem like Universal.

I think you will appreciate having unlimited express pass when you are there this summer. I'd say it much makes up for the cost of parking.

Other than WDW (where its built into the room charge) I've always paid to park at hotels in major cities (Boston, Philadelphia, LA, Atlanta, NYC) and at resorts.

Thanks Kevin.

We travel quite a bit with a special needs cheer team.

In February, we stayed at the Sheraton Atlanta. I am a Starwoods member. I was charged $20.00 per night WITH a handicap sign. The front desk person told me that they only have to provide handicap parking spaces and they absolutely are allowed and do charge the same rate as their regular spaces. She was quite adamant about it.

Although, when we asked to speak to the manager since we were a large group of special needs cheerleaders and there was only 1 (yes 1) indoor handicap spot, the manager went ahead and waived the fee for all of us. He was very gracious about it.

2 years ago, the team stayed at the Anaheim Marriott. The parking charge there was $25.00 per night. (We also stayed at the Buena Vista Palace for a competition at WDW) and there was a parking charge. Although I don't know what it was as the rest of my family stayed at the Portofino and we just left the car there.

So, many hotel chains do indeed charge for parking and they don't make allowances for handicap stickers.

Also, just for some trivia - The Hard Rock is not a Loews hotel. The reservations are managed by Loews, but they don't participate in the Loews Reward program and are not listed as a Loews hotel. If you go to the Loews website and look at the three hotels, they list them as the Loews Portofino, the Loews Royal Pacific and the Hard Rock at Universal; no mention of Loews in the Hard Rock name. Most of the Loews hotels are luxury hotels. The only two "theme park" ones are the two Universal hotels. They don't have casinos, so they don't really have a themed status, unless it is the theme of 4 and 5 star hotels :goodvibes

But back to the original question.

Many here have reported that Loews will waive the parking fee if you have a valid handicap sticker or plates. You just have to politely ask. We have never asked, so I have no personal experience as the handicap sticker in Atlanta was for a fellow cheerleader that we picked up from the airport.

Loews did participate in the Handicap badge schemeup to last year. Apparently now they no longer give comp parking to people with Handicap badge. here is the reply i got when i heard they no longer participate.

Thank you for choosing to make your stay here with us at Loews Royal
Pacific Resort. Unfortunately there is no complementary parking for those
with a disabled parking badge. The same rate fees apply, and it is $15.00
for self parking and $22.00 for valet parking overnight. If you have any
other questions, please let me know.

I'm not trying to be rude, so please don't everyone jump on me (as I'm sure others are wondering the same thing, but don't want to be the one to ask...) but why would you be entitled to free parking, just because you have a handicap plaquard? That doesn't make sense to me. If the hotel charges for parking, they charge for parking. if they sneak into the cost of the room, then that's what they do. (alot of Holiday Inns don't charge, and by their prices, I'd say they don't sneak it into the price of the room, either) I find it's usually the more expensive hotels that charge for parking (and internet...)

So please don't get angry with me for asking, but what exactly is the reason that you should be able to park for free, when everyone is paying?

I would never get angry and your question is completely fair. Please read my explanation below and you will see why I am so confused and concerned.

It's just that we've never paid here in town whenever we've gone to the beach for example and park in a paying lot. They always waive the fee and say that handicap don't pay. Also whenever we have gone to the airport here in Miami, FL and use the parking lot whether it be for a few minutes to a few hours, we never pay. We show the handicap sign when asked, and drivers license and we are allowed thru the gate at no charge. So in Miami, FL we've never, and I mean ever, paid while having the sign. We havent even had to ask. As a matter of fact, while staying at the Hard Rock in Orlando last year, we drove to Epcot and were waived in by the parking guard at the booth and did not pay. Then during our first stay the Royal Pacific last year we never had to pay for parking. So my reason for writing this thread is my sheer curiosity as to why they would charge if this is the norm, when all along we have had the fee waived at so many different venues, including Universal Hotels.

I, in no way feel more priviledged because of the handicap. The fact alone that they offer spaces is fair enough. My question just seems fair to me or anyone in my situation who has never paid perhaps out of what? sheer courtesy? Have we miraculously gotten lucky all these years? or is this in fact a Miami law or maybe a courtesy to handicap parkers depending on who holds the power to decide. I just wish I knew.:confused3

Thank you all for the wonderful replies.

Like i posted TerryCRZ, they did give comp parking up to last year, but this is now not available, and everyone has to pay

I think you will find the info is correct. They no longer give you comp parking with disabled badge.
You need to talk to the parking manager or checkin manager , they will confirm this.

I have comp parking in September. Has been confirmed via email also.

Just curious to know which resort and what the date is on your email. I took my mother to PBH in February and was told that we would be comped parking with her HP tags. I was told I had to tell them at check-in. Check-in TM noted it on our reservation and said if we get charged, to just call and the charge will be removed because of the notation they made. We ended up getting charged so I called accounting and was told HP are not comped. I was not so much upset about the charge but the inconsistency and plus to report back on these boards. I started to call various areas at PBH. I was told that they no longer comp but because I was told otherwise, they removed the charge.

Frankly, I do not understand why HP are comped but I read about it on these boards and had it verified by PBH before we left and again at check-in. Far be it from me to turn down a freebie! We parked int he garage in a HP space right next to the elevator. Very convenient!

To be fair we have a contact at the HRH. We have comp valet parking for 14 days !

I do hope you get it, but they no longer give this out as comp parking for disabled badge holders. I got it last year but any manager i have talked to , have confirmed this is not policy now.

Buon Giorno Mr. McFarland:

I apologize that Loews Portofino Bay Hotel no longer offers complimentary
handicap parking.
However to make things as convenient as possible the parking spaces are
located next to the elevator.
