Official 2014 Donald Half Marathon

I tend to think that I just got off hard when it comes to Lasik. Of my friends and family who had it done I'm the only one with the issues, and the only one that wouldn't have a touch-up even if you paid me to do it.

Did the Galloway plan's 9.5 mile this weekend. First long run since the TOT Oct 5th, whoopsie. I've done 5K a few times and the short runs called for, but that wasn't enough. I was hurting! At 5.6 miles I felt like I was flying, wheee, running is fun, and before I hit 7 miles I was having to talk myself into running again after walk breaks. Didn't help that I managed to choose a very hilly route. :scared:

How was everyone else's weekend?

Wow, I am mixed about my LASIK results. Mine is 2 years old and I really love the outcome. I do have an early morning issue with my distant eye not adjusting well for a few moments and I do need readers/cheaters in low light with small print. I went in knowing that would be the case - I kind of hate it now as I can never remember to bring the cheaters when we head out to a nice restaurant. Thank you Steve Jobs for the smart phone and all its utility!

Ran for the first time post ToT. Had a cortisone treatment last week and am hoping to get back on the wagon quickly.

Nice job with the long run, even if it did hurt! :thumbsup2

Our weekend was not the best. We were set to do an 8 mile run on Sunday. Got up at 8am, had my planned pre-race breakfast (banana, peanut butter and honey) and stretched for a good half hour. 2 miles in DH had to take a break to stretch and rub his calves. Less than 4 miles in he was limping and in lots of pain. His foot has been hurting while running and afterwards for a good couple of weeks and he is still having a terrible time with the shinsplints. After the 4 miles we both took and ice bath. We were going to take a half hour break then do the other 4 miles but his legs/foot were hurting too much. I'm pretty bummed out. Our 4 miles pace was about 19 minute/mile. I don't know if we'll be ready come January. Not sure what's going on with his body. We both got fitted for new running shoes. I'm going to call our doctor and setup an appointment for him. I'm worried DH might have a broken foot and/or a stress fracture. If the x-rays come out clear I might take him to a physical therapist. We will see.

Best be safe...

Long term shin splints can be a sign of a SF. It is usually a late October through early December discussion item for the Janaury races.

If it is a stress fracture, is he out of the January race?

Obviously a doc would have better info. We are 10 weeks out. A SF usually requires 6 weeks rest. That would leave 4 weeks for race prep. If he can keep and work on cardio conditioning through the SF period (ie pool running (no weight), cycling, rowing, whatever the doc will allow) it is not out of the question - but will be a tough road. I am not sure where you guys are in training or how far you have gone as a longest run to date. Also, how fast have you been while healthy? I am not going to say a definitive no, but a successful race is not likely based on what I read above.

I urge you and DH to not give up hope yet. It could be any number of things. You just need to run the hoops and see what the issue may be. I would strongly suggest the doc that you are trying to get into. If you require a referral to see a specialist, try to do that over the phone and get to a sports doc.

Good luck!

To be honest, I am NOT happy with lasik. I'm back to glasses and never entertained a thought for a millisecond about having touchups. No no no. Miserable experience for me. Tons of side effects, lots of difficult things.

I was still using expensive eyedrops 10 years later; I don't have to use them all the time anymore because wearing glasses is keeping my eyes more moist, thank goodness!

Anyway, I had it done in around 2001. 20/20 for quite a long time. That was great. The other stuff wasn't and I regretted having had it done (literally so I didn't have to wear glasses at my wedding, and then I needed to, but didn't, wear SUNglasses down the aisle, because it was so bright and my eyes, 2 years later, were SO sensitive) within a month.

Not everyone ends up with all the side effects I did, and I'm totally happy for them! I'm just not happy for myself. The TOT run was really really hard for me, because it's in the dark and I have such problems going from dark to light and back. I love having done the run, but I doubt I'll do a night run again. :(

Sorry you didn't have a good experience with it. I know it's never a guaranteed solution to vision problems, but for me, I'm certainly glad I did it when I did. I was in my mid-20's and was a -675 in each eye so I couldn't see anything without glasses or contacts. I went from being essentially blind to having 16/20 vision and haven't seen any regression in the 10 years since I've had the surgery. I'll take the tradeoff to the light sensitivity any day.

Good job on powering through, though!

How was everyone else's weekend?
Great! I was at WDW Thurs. through Sat., with LOTS of walking and standing, which always takes a toll on my legs and lower back... I definitely felt it on my 4-miler Sunday. Nothing awful; just very fatigued. But I did run through nearly all of the second half, inspired to get home in time to watch the NYC Marathon, lol!

... I do need readers/cheaters in low light with small print.
So my drastically impaired vision in low-light restaurants isn't my imagination? I'm getting more and more far-sighted as the years past 40 go by, but really only need my reading glasses for prolonged reading - but man, low light does me in.

Fingers crossed for you!

I'm sorry things aren't going as planned. If I may, I strongly suggest getting it checked out sooner rather than later; if something is in need of fixing/healing, continuing to run on it will probably only make it worse. Much better to catch these things early, when they'll take less time to recover.

I'm going for 4 miles today and hopefully it'll be pain free. I've been seeing a PT since September for some knee issues, and sometimes he's had to be my sports psychologist too. After some painful tendinitis, I told him I'm prepared to walk this half, but he's adamant that I can run it... good news for my run/walk intervals. If I can do 4 miles today, I'll only be a week behind the schedule I initially chose.

Well we went to the doctor this afternoon and it looks like we will not be running in January. DH has a possibly broken foot (waiting for x-ray results) and tight tendons. He needs to take a week or two off and do some prescribed stretches everyday for the next 8 weeks. We can start walking in a few days then slowly try a light jog. We need to take it slooooowly. If things start to hurt again, we need to stop walking altogether and just stretch. If the stretches and rest don't eliminate the pain in 8 weeks, he'll need to go to PT. This means we cannot train for at least a few weeks. We are not in good enough condition to condense our training and still be successful in January. I'm pretty disappointed. We've decided to try the half next year and do 12 months of really slow training. Basically we're starting from scratch.

So, can I defer our race registration? How do I go about doing this?

Gosh, January is going to be hard. We're still going to WDW, which is wonderful! .... But it's going to be painful to see all the wonderful race preparations and not be a part of it. First world problems, I guess. I'm trying to look at the big picture and not be disappointed.

Sorry about the news. It is always a tough pill to swallow. If it is any help, I started trying to run the marathon as a 40th year bucket list item.... I finished my first marathon at age 43.

On the runD marathon weekend "registration" page, there is a deferral paragraph with a link.

In the mean time, try to work with the PT on expanding the scope of exercises to include a general leg conditioning. I suspect that the entire structure from hips down is somewhat compromised. If he cannot, try to get to a gym and look for a trainer with a 'corrective exercise' certification. Do not join the club until you find out what the trainer certs are (and their cost). You should be able to bundle some package together. I would spend the next 3-4 months working on total conditioning and then slowly move into running again. This will solidify the foundation and give you two a platform to spring forward from.

I'm really sorry your DH is going through this.

I take it that you guys aren't comfy with you running on your own while DH is your support team for it?

Thanks guys. I don't think he'll agree to see a trainer but I'm going to help him do the stretches the doctor told him to do. We have a pretty kicking home gym, so we'll both be able to do some strength training over the winter and light walking on the treadmill or elliptical.

I asked him about running the race on my own but he wants to do it together. :goodvibes I was pretty surprised. He wasn't all that happy when I signed us up last spring but now he's excited to train for a full year and really do a great job in 2015. :debwalk:

Am I allowed to talk about selling bibs on the DIS? I was a bit bummed to see deferring will cost us $90 for the two of us. Boo.

Aw, that's really sweet of him. And of you; you're way nicer than I would be in your shoes, LOL.

Sorry to hear of your DH injury maple girl. I am currently
Doing PT for a fractured distal clavacle due to a fall 2 weeks ago.
I got lucky that I won't need surgery. But it took me off training for 10 days. Now I am doing a little power walking to get set for the 10K in January.

On that note my sister is flying in to MCO for WDW wknd. She needs to get back to the airport by 10am on Marathon Sunday. We are staying inside Disney.
Does anyone know how much time to allow for a Mears airport shuttle to go from hotel to the airport? I hear maybe 3 hours?

Thanks
Colleen

DME asks you to be ready 3 hours before flight time. If you are staying Contempo, GF or Poly I would suggest adding some buffer.

I'm curious who all is doing the WDW Half as well as the Princess half? I am, but didn't realize the course is the exact same which is kind of a bummer to me. Oh well, maybe for 2014 it'll be my goal to do all WDW runDisney events :)

 Me - I am! My plan (subject to change as needed, of course), is to race the WDW Half (no stops, hopefully), race the 10K portion of the Glass Slipper Challenge (no stops), and take it very easy for the Princess Half (stopping for pics). I think that'll make for two very different races, even though they share the same course.

Hi!

I'm trying to talk myself into the race retreat (assuming there's space left) for the Half. I'm running solo, and probably won't have any family coming in to the park to meet me. So I'll be on my own before and after. Being on my own before TOT was pretty lonely for me, and I felt really lost. Would the Retreat help me at least feel like I had a place to go? (other than a 45 minute portapotty line, that is, like I got caught in at TOT)

Is it a good and helpful thing, or is it a waste of money? Easy-to-get food afterwards would be a very good thing for me so that's a positive. But since I'm slower, would food be left? Ah, reading it closer it says it goes to 10:30, so I would HOPE there would be food left at around 8:30, LOL.

Thanks for anyone's thoughts on this!
