My future son-in-laws grandmother ( mom is dead) and I are lighting the family candles for dd wedding. She asked to pick out a song and I am stumped. Any ideas?

Ave Maria would be my choice. That is what DH's and my mom's had playing when they lit the candles.

Where is the ceremony being held? In church? What denomination? At a synogogue? At a civil office? Outdoors?

Candles form a part of a vast number of types of ceremonies, so it might be helpful to know which one applies here.

Ave Maria works if it is RC, but to me it is more a song of death than marriage.

Is there a particular song that hold meaning for you in terms of marriage, the couple being married, something that you want to share with them?

Do you have a favorite service based song?

Sunrise Sunset comes to mind. It's fairly commonplace at weddings, but nice none the less.

I suppose "Come on Baby Light My Fire" would be inappropriate? ;)

Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, Pachelbel's Canon in D, and Ave Maria would all be wonderful choices (depending of course on your religious background and personal preferences). :)

"What a Wonderful World" by Louie Armstrong. My favorite song of all time! :goodvibes

We had our wedding in a RC church and had the moms walk down the aisle and light the candles to Sunrise/Sunset. They carried a light candle to the alter with them.

I love 'Yours, Mine & Ours'.
by David Chamberlain and Theresa James

It is perfect for the mothers candle lighting representing their children and families uniting.

YOURS MINE & OURS

Fate brought us together in this place in time
With grace blessing this union of hearts and minds
Like the river that runs to be one with the sea
We were meant to be

CHORUS
Yours, Mines & Ours
From this moment on we are one
One in spirit …one in heart
One for a lifetime …never to part
Yours, mine & ours
That’s how we’ll stay
Now and for always…a heartbeat away

We are more …. more than two people who travel alone
There’s a door …and it opens forever when love builds a home
For all of our lives we’ll be part of the dream
And all it really means

CHORUS
Yours, Mine & Ours
From this moment on we are one
One in spirit …one in heart
One for a lifetime …never to part
Yours, mine & ours
That’s how we’ll stay
Now and for always…a heartbeat away

* * *

Like the seasons of life that go on endlessly
We will always be

CHORUS

My mom and I danced to "Wind Beneath My Wings" by Bette Midler. I'll never forget the tears!!

Not only did I get a giggle out of this, my SO has decided that it is the perfect song for his wedding. I don't know exactly who he's planning to marry in that case, but that's his song... :rotfl:

Might I depart on the suggestions provided and suggest... I think it's called
"In A Country Churchyard" by Chris Deburgh

The lyrics are as follows:

In a country churchyard there’s a preacher with his people
Gathered all around to join a man and woman,
Spring is here and turtle doves are singing from the steeple,
Bees are in the flowers, growing in the graveyard,
And over the hill, where the river meets the mill,
A lovely girl is coming down
To give her hand upon her wedding day.

Dressed in simple white and wearing flowers in her hair,
Music as she walks slowly to the altar,
And picking up his Bible then the preacher turns towards her,
"will you take this man to be your wedded husband,
To honour and love in the eyes of God above,
Now let the peoble sing with me
These words to live forever in your heart...

Let your love shine on
For we are the stars in the sky,
Let your love shine strong
Until the day you fly away"

Many years have fallen on that golden country morning,
The graveyard’s overgrown, the church lies in ruins,
Ivy on the walls and ravens wheeling round above me
As I made my way towards the last remaining headstone,
I fell to my knees, read the lines beneath the leaves,
And suddenly it seemed to me
I heard the words like singing in the trees...

Let your love shine on
For we are the stars in the sky,
Let your love shine strong
Until the day you fly...
Let your love shine on
For we are the stars in the sky,
Let your love shine strong
Until the day you fly...
Fly away...

Should be easy to find.

Cheers

We used Ave Maria during the candle lighting ceremony, sister used sunrise sunset for hers last month--both were very nice.
