Walt Disney Parks and Resorts said it is aligning Disney Cruise Line, Adventures by Disney and its offsite regional resort business under a single leader.
Karl Holz, currently president of New Vacation Operations with oversight for Adventures by Disney and offsite regional resorts, will assume an expanded role as president of Disney Cruise Line and New Vacation Operations.
He previously served as DCL president in 2004 prior to taking an assignment in Paris.
DCL president Tom McAlpin is leaving.
Disney described the change as aimed at creating one organization within the company focused on operating the businesses that ‘take the Disney brand to new places.’
Holz has held a number of leadership positions during 13 years with Disney, including president of Euro Disney S.A.S., and svp Walt Disney World Operations.
Al Weiss, president of worldwide operations for Walt Disney Parks & Resorts, called Holz ‘exceptionally well qualified for this expanded role,’ which includes overseeing the addition of two DCL newbuilds.
Weiss also acknowledged McAlpin’s contributions.
He joined the cruise operation at its start and held progressively higher roles over 14 years, starting as vp finance, business development and shoreside travel operations before assuming responsibility for shipboard operations, purchasing and logistics, entertainment, programming and operations integration, marine/technical operations and shoreside travel operations.
He became president in 2004.
McAlpin handled the purchase of Castaway Cay and later branched DCL out from its Caribbean/Bahamas deployment to the Mexican Riviera and the Mediterranean.
In early 2007, he announced the contracting of a pair of 124,000gt newbuilds with Meyer Werft for delivery in 2011 and 2012.

Disney Cruise Line President Tom McAlpin is leaving the company, as part of a corporate reshuffling announced today.
McAlpin is being replaced by the same man he succeeded as Disney Cruise Line president: Karl Holz, who is currently president of New Vacation Operations, where he oversees the Adventures By Disney tour operation.
In his new role, Holz will run both the cruise line and the new vacation division.
“The vision is to create one organization within the company that is focused on operating the businesses that take the Disney brand to new places,” Disney said in a written statement.
McAlpin (right), who has been with Disney Cruise Line for 14 years, is leaving “to pursue other interests,” Disney said.
“Tom has been with Disney Cruise Line since its inception and helped to establish the company as the premier family cruise line,” Al Weiss, president of worldwide operations for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, said in the same statement. “We wish him well in his future endeavors…”
Karl Holz The announcement comes a week after a deadline for executives within Disney's domestic parks and resorts to decide whether to accept corporate buyouts. Disney declined to say whether McAlpin accepted the buyout.
Holz (left), who has spent 13 years with Disney, was Disney Cruise Line president until 2004, when he left to take over as president of Disneyland Paris. He will move into his new post next week.
“He is exceptionally qualified for this expanded role, which will include oversight of the Disney Cruise Line expansion as we build two new ships to add to our fleet,” Weiss said.
