Luxor, MGM Grand, Mirage, or Stratosphere?

Okay...I know...big difference between these, but let me explain. We are traveling with my parent (both in their early 60's) and 2 kids, ages 10 and 7. We are only staying in Vegas as a jumping off point to the Grand Canyon, but will have 3 nights there. We are planning on visiting a couple of the state parks during the day, maybe swim in the morning, and see some sights in the evening...not too late ;)

Anyway...my 10 yr old is a HUGE fan of Egyptology, and was mesmerized by the pictures of the Luxor. I thought about just staying there the 1 night that we return. She would like to stay 3 nights, though. We can get this at $41/night.

My husband and I stayed at MGM last yr, and it's a good price and the "known factor". Comfy beds, too:thumbsup2. We have booked at $50/night, so far.

I loved the Mirage, and this was originally where I wanted to stay during this trip. No great deals, yet, but it's still early. At least $80/night??

Last, but not least, Stratosphere. I originally didn't consider this...but can get rooms at $27/night. I checked recent reviews, and it gets very descent reviews. I understand that it's on the northern side of the strip, but we'll have a van. The beds have been described as comfy, the place seems clean, and people are booking it multiple times bc/ of the great value.

Any suggestions? Like I said, we're staying 3 nights, then will be back in Vegas for 1 night before we fly out. Thoughts??? I would like to try 2 different hotels, but which ones?????? So confused :confused3

thanks so much for your help!

Oh, and I just found a code for NYNY for $47/night. Too many decisions.

I would do either the MGM or Mirage. I think that the other two are too far on the end of the Strip. You can see and do more by being in the middle of the action. M&M World and the Coca-Cola Store are fun things for kids to do! You can always take a taxi or jump on the Deuce to get to the Luxor!

MGM & Mirage are nicest 2 properties by far. Just go check out Luxor; not as
"Egyptian" as one might think. Edge to MGM for price (likely) & proximity to Luxor.
Strat is a seedy party of town. SO not worth it.

I would stay at The Mirage.

If your DD is into Egypt, visit the local natural history museum. The Luxor gave all the items from the replica King Tut tomb to this museum a few years ago and they just opened their new Egypt exhibit that features these items: http://www.lvnhm.org/

If she wants to check out the Luxor anyway, the Titantic exhibit and the Bodies exhibits are at Luxor.

Have fun planning your trip!

If price is a big factor I just an e-mail offer a few days ago from Excalibur for the same $27.00 a night. A better location in my opinion that the Stratosphere.

I'd choose MGM or Mirage. Luxor is okay, but just okay. The pyramid rooms are the older ones and are only neat because of the shape. Their tower rooms are fine. But, there's very little in the way of Egyptology in the place anymore. They're trying to shed that themed image, as is Excalibur. Unlike the previous poster, I would not recommend Excalibur. Used to stay there every trip, but I refuse to even look at their offers anymore. It's really gone downhill over the past few years and their newly refurbished, hipster rooms are complete junk. The casino there is still good, though.

I would not recommend Stratosphere. It's tolerable, but it's not really a place I'd stay again. The dining is not very good there. Rooms depend on what level you book. The higher the better, but even that's not so great.

Since you have a van, you might also check the Golden Nugget, located Downtown. It's the ONLY downtown hotel I'd ever stay at. I've been there twice and it really is a great hotel. Good dining options, very nice, spacious rooms. They just opened their new Rush tower, also. Very, very neat pool area with a shark tank in the middle (bit of a thrill to swim up to the plexiglass and see those sharks just on the other side) and a water slide that goes through the middle of the tank. The kids might enjoy that.

But DT is not a place for kids to stay at all. We stayed at GN w/ our 12YO son 2 years ago...and other than Fremont street experience, there was really nothing to entertain him.

MGM and Mirage both have fantastic pool areas. Either of these hotels is the best choice, IMO.

Don't get me wrong. Excalibur is not my first choice at all. But if price were a deciding factor, I would choose Excalibur at $27 a night over Stratosphere at $27 a night. We got a pretty good rate at the MGM Grand in May. A Celebrity Suite at $97 a night. I would go with MGM for the pools and kids. It's a bit of a hike, but the lazy river is great.

We're just back from Vegas (also went in December). Based on your info, I would choose MGM. They have a good food court, are connected by overhead walkways to NY NY, Excaliber and then to Luxor and Mandalay Bay. The rooms at MGM were the nicest we stayed at the past two trips (Luxor, Monte Carlo, NYNY, Bally's) with the exception of the HUGE luxury suite we got at Bally's in December using the $20 trick at check-in.

I think your total group will like the location of MGM.

We just haven't been into the Mirage at all as they tend to be targeting the upscale gambler and NOT the family, low-roller crowd.

Lot's more for the younger ones to do/see at the Tropicana/LV Blvd intersection than mid-strip (party central!). Also the MGM is connected to the south end of the monorail, so it is easy to go somewhere further up the strip (does cost $$ though).

Just MHO from someone who's been to Vegas many times over the years with and without children!
