Lost Moms, SPF 80, and RideMax Plans, Oh My! A May 2010 Trip Report-FINAL Update 8/23

Wednesday was a day I was looking forward to. I'd been wanting to visit Blizzard Beach since I was about 7 years old and my parents got me a video (which I now have on DVD) called "Mickey's Sing Along Songs: Beach Party at Walt Disney World". It looked like there was so much cool stuff to do! (It also featured the various resort beaches, Typhoon Lagoon, the Spirit of Aloha dancers, a boat ride on Seven Seas Lagoon, and the Electrical Water Pageant). The park opened at 10am, so we were at the bus stop at 9:06 (after putting on my SPF 80 sunblock). Now at Kidani, DHS and BB share a bus. One pulled up flashing a marquee that only said the Studios, so I asked if the driver if he would be going to Blizzard Beach. He said yes, but after the studios, so we decided to wait for one going to BB then DHS (the normal order). We waited about 15 minutes for one, and then it took about 15 minutes (including stopping at Jambo House) to arrive at our destination. I think we were the only ones who got off there. It wasn't time to open yet, and there was a fairly long line at the turnstiles, so we sat on a bench and took a couple pictures of our surroundings, like the Winter Summerland mini golf course.

It wasn't long before they opened the turnstiles and let us in. But wait! It was just a false alarm because they held us behind a rope on the bridge over Cross Country Creek near Lottawatta Lodge until opening time.

At promptly 10am, we were released. We quickly made our way into the park and found our home base for the day: under a shelter near Meltaway Bay. One of the perks of arriving early means you get your choice of seats! Mom laid down with her book because she doesn't do water slides. I made my way over to the "Green Slope". I came to the chair lift, which I had not planned on riding because I don't like heights, especially in rides like those. However, there was no line, and it seemed the better alternative to climbing 90ft of steps. So I hopped on and got a chair to myself, as there was basically nobody on the thing. I arrived at the top and got off, making my way up the last few stairs to Summit Plummet. I wish I had brought the camera with me because the view from the top was amazing. I could see AK, the rook of AKL, Epcot, the Studios, and waaaay in the distance the top of the castle, Space Mountain, and BLT.

I waited about 5 minutes. Finally, it was my turn! As I sat in the top of the chute waiting for the all clear, the attendant looked at me and said "Are you ready?" I nodded. "You have to smile." Really dude? I'm about to send myself down a 120 ft slide going 55mph and you want me to smile?! I gave him one of these grins :teeth:. Down I go: (I was pushing off and I crossed my legs as soon as this picture was taken)
Photo0019.jpg

Now, I felt the drop in my stomach for about a second. Then I felt pain in my bottom. Seriously, worst wedgie ever. I thought it did some serious damage. Here's me getting off the slide, pulling out the atomic wedgie (in the words of an Unofficial Guide reader):
Photo0021.jpg

At this point, I kind of felt like I had to use the restroom, but I decided I could hold off for a little bit. I climbed back up the bajillion steps to go on Slush Gusher. This was a slightly longer wait, about 10-15 minutes. More air time because of the two humps, but ending in another awful wedgie. Again, the feeling of needing a restroom came and I ignored it some more. I made my way over to Downhill Double Dipper. The wait here said 10-15 minutes but it was more like 25. This ride requires a tube. Riders who have just landed in the pool put their tubes in a slot that takes them on a conveyor belt up to those waiting in line. Apparently there was a jam, and the cast members weren't aware of it. :confused3 Also, BB plays a recording telling you about each slide and it's height requirements, so I got to listen to that for 25 minutes straight. :headache: I finally got to the top and down I went. It was your basic enclosed tube slide that goes straight down, with one or two bumps, ending in another wedgie. The "I need to go to the bathroom" feeling could not be ignored anymore, so I hurried off in search of one. When I did find one, it was thoroughly disgusting considering the park had been open for less than an hour.

IF YOU DO NOT DO WELL WITH BODILY FUNCTIONS SKIP THIS PARAGRAPH (ALTHOUGH IT ISN'T TERRIBLY GRAPHIC).

Basically, the water had worked it's way up where water should never go, and served as a colon cleanse. Water is mostly what came out. I didn't feel well for the rest of the day, but I persevered on.

*******************************

I headed over to Mom to see if she was ready to go in the wave pool and on the lazy river, but she was napping. I went to Runoff Rapids on the back of the mountain. Now, this ride has three slides: 2 open and 1 enclosed. The UG said that double tubes must ride the open slides, but single riders can ride either. I planned on riding the open one. When I finally made my way to the top, very winded, I found that one of the open slides was not operating. All double tubes were going down the other open slide, and all single tubes were going down the enclosed slide. I'm not sure if this is normal protocol, or if single tubes were being discriminated against that day. Well, I went down the enclosed slide and it was just your normal slide. I (thankfully) did not end up with a wedgie after that.

Next I headed up to Snow Stormers, a three slide mat ride, where you ride on your stomach. There was a dad and his two kids who all wanted to go down at the same time. He put them on the numbers he thought they should be on to correspond with each other. He failed. As we got closer, I could see that the kids would be going down with me, and dad would be behind them. I asked him if he wanted to go down at the same time as them and he said "Oh yeah. I was actually trying to pawn them off on you! :lmao:" Well, we rearranged, and when it was my turn I went down. This was fairly boring and I got a small face full of water when I landed.

"I haven't learned how to stop yet!"

After this, I was hungry so I went back over to the shelter. We had packed sandwiches, but still didn't have condiments, so I went off in search of some. I passed Pluto meeting and greeting along the way, but didn't want to meet him just then. I found the jackpot in Lottawatta Lodge: mayo & mustard in packets! I grabbed enough to last for the rest of the trip. After we ate, we headed off Meltaway Bay.
Top-2.jpg

Although those waves aren't quite as crazy as the ones at Typhoon Lagoon, they've still got some pull to them! There's also some areas that have waterfalls, and we had fun swimming in there for awhile. We also got some Photopass pictures taken.
Photo0023.jpg

Photo0025.jpg

We had to wait quite a bit to have those taken as there were several families in front of us, then the guy's camera was dying, so he left, and then we could see him talking to another photographer for about 10 minutes, who took over for him. While we were waiting, we saw a couple in the water. The woman had on a bikini top with the halter untied and she looked dangerously close to losing the top. I asked mom why she wouldn't tie the top when it looked so precarious, and mom said she probably didn't want tan lines. Um, I don't know but I think the embarrassment of losing my top at a family water park would outweigh the embarrassment of having some tan lines!

We headed over to the Cross Country Creek after we got our photos done. We needed to wait until a double tube came floating along, so we had a funny interaction with a family exiting the creek. It seemed to be a grandma in her 50s, mom in 30s, and grandkids. Grandma was having some trouble getting out of the tube; she was really wedged in there! Mom helped to get her out, saying "Excuse my hand on your butt." The woman was quite entertaining, saying things like "My @$$ was stuck in a tube! I thought I was going to have to walk around with it on all day!" :lmao: A double tube finally came along and we were off. Here's a random palm tree shot.
Top-3.jpg

Mom wanted me to get a shot of Summit Plummet.

Taken just as we're about to enter the ice cave:
Top-5.jpg

We got dripped on in the ice cave all three times we possibly could have been dripped on and that water was COLD. They aren't kidding. Here's a picture of mom after the cave.
Top-6.jpg

We got a Photopass picture taken here, too.
Photo0028.jpg

Here's a couple of detail shots. The first is the "snow maker machine" aka drips ice cold water on you. The second is Ice Gator's house (the BB mascot). You would hear voices coming from inside and then every 30 seconds or so a sneeze that would make water fly out from the chimney.
Top-7.jpg

Top-8.jpg

Not long after this, we heard the quote of this post. Two young brothers were in separate tubes and one was drifting faster and slightly ahead of the other. The second one said "Stop so I can catch up!" And the second one replied "I can't, I haven't learned how to stop yet!" :rotfl: We were getting nearer to our exit point, and Mom questioned how we were going to get out of this tube. I suggested flipping it and she looked at me like this: :upsidedow So I said I'd launch myself out and pull it over to the side so she could get out on the stairs. Sure enough, that worked. We went back to our shelter to dry off and get dressed. On our way out of the park, we stopped to get a snack: a mango smoothie and a giant sprinkle cookie. As we approached the exit, we came to the "Snow Family" and I got a few Photopass pictures taken with them (you can't see baby snowman as he's to the left of the picture).
Photo0029.jpg

Even closer to the exit we came across these fun sleighs for sale.

When we arrived at the bus stop, we had to wait about 20 minutes for our bus. However, there were two girls there and we struck up a conversation with them. They were on their senior trip. They were from Louisiana; almost all of their class had chosen to go on a cruise, they were 2 of 5 that opted for 4 days in Disney and 4 days in Panama. They were so polite and their accents were awesome: "Yes, maam" they kept saying to mom, and they actually said "Where are y'all from?" :thumbsup2 One of them had what looked like 2nd degree burns on her shins and she said they were actually the remains of a sunburn from weeks earlier. She had gone on a 5 hour kayak trip and didn't put sunblock on. She thought since she didn't pun tanning oil on she would be okay. Our bus arrived and we said goodbye. Not too long after, we were back at Kidani where we showered and I refilled my mug.

We had dinner ADRs at Ohana at 5pm. Would we make it? What would we think of it? Where else would we visit that night?

"Well, now I know where all the Beach Party songs came from..."

I'm a little late but I'm here. Time to get caught up. I love that picture of you with Ariel and Eric! So cool!

After we had showered and dressed in nice-ish clothes, we headed out to the bus stop. Following the "allow 90 minutes to get from one hotel to another" rule, it was around 3:30. Thankfully, we didn't have to wait too long for a bus, only about 10 minutes. We arrived at Magic Kingdom, and headed over to the Poly/GF boat launch. There wasn't a boat there yet, but there was a long line of people. When the boat arrived, it filled up and we had to wait for the next one. Not a big deal. I took a ton of pictures once our boat arrived. These pictures basically chronicle our journey from MK to the GF (where everyone except us and one other person got off) to the Poly. We also saw the Contemporary and the roof of Wilderness Lodge.

We went into BouTiki, where we browsed for a bit. I found a ring that I had been wanting for several years, ever since I saw a friend with one. She said she found hers at Downtown Disney, so imagine my surprise when I found it at the Poly gift shop! It's silver and has a cubic zirconia mickey head and my initial on it. I wear it constantly, but unfortunately, I don't have a picture of it.

We headed up to the second floor to check in. There was a 10 minute line to do that, and there was a group of girls about my age ahead of us. They didn't have an ADR and were told it would be about a 90 minute wait. They said that was fine and took their buzzer. We checked in with no problems and were given our buzzer. There weren't any seats open in the waiting area, so we looked in one of the shops upstairs until some seats opened. About 10 minutes later, we were buzzed. Bill from PA sat us, and he was very friendly. One of the interesting things we noticed was that there were no two person tables. The smallest were three tops. We were seated in the main room on the aisle, and we could see the castle in the distance!
Disney%252520Day%2525203%252520019.JPG

Sam from Chicago was our server (though her nametag said Grand Rapids, Michigan!). I didn't take pictures of the food because everyone knows what it looks like-and if you don't, head over to the restaurant board sticky and look for the "categorized food porn thread" done by yours truly. Here's what we thought of the food.

Pineapple Bread: We thought this was amazing and we ate almost the whole loaf.

Salad: We loved this. The dressing was good, and there was a lot of green lettuce, no iceberg.

Potstickers & Lo Mein: Delicious! They were out of this world!!

Chicken Wings: Just okay, but we're from Buffalo so we're picky about our wings! ;)

The meats: We thought they were dry but flavorful. Mom's favorite was the shrimp and mine was the steak. We both thought the turkey & pork loin were just okay.

Stir Fry Vegetables: I didn't really care for these.

Bread Pudding: Mom LOVED this. I thought it was good, but not fantastic. However, I'm also not a fan of bananas foster.

Now, the woman who walks around and sings was very good, but she got a little annoying after awhile. Some of the songs she was singing sounded very familiar, and I recognized them from the Beach Party video I mentioned earlier. When the coconut races happened, we had a front row seat!

We finished up and got leis on our way out. We stopped at the bathroom and I realized I had lost my sunglasses! I retraced my steps and found them under my chair. Whew! We headed out to the monorail stop to continue our journey...

"I Didn't Feel Outclassed at the Polynesian, but I do here"

Next up was the Grand Floridian. I heard the floors had character designs on them, and we just wanted to look around. We found a car that had only one other couple in it. They looked to be very high maintenance. When we all exited, the man held open the gate for us. We thanked him and he just ignored us; didn't even make eye contact. :confused3 Rude. Anyway, we continued into the main building, where I took many photos of the characters on the floor. We also listened to the live band and looked in some of the shops, and got to glance into some of the restaurants.

We also wandered around outside and took pictures of the pools and beaches. We were just getting a snobby vibe from the place, and mom said "I didn't feel outclassed at the Polynesian, but I do here." I agreed and said "I don't think I'd ever like to stay here because I feel like I'd have to pretend to be rich and snobby." I'm sure not everyone is like that there, but it felt like it.

We arrived back at the Magic Kingdom and got in our line for the AKL bus. It didn't take too long to arrive, and we were soon back at Kidani. We took pictures of each other with our leis on.

The next day would take us to Disney's Hollywood Studios. Would we make rope drop? How long would we wait for Toy Story Mania? How many times would we ride TSM?

"Hey Poptart, can I have some?"

Great update! I wish I had gotten a chance to ride the resort launch from the Magic Kingdom, it looks like such a nice ride based on your pictures. I really like your sunset picture as well, very pretty :). I agree about the Grand Floridian--I went there for the first time for breakfast the morning of the day you were there, and while it is a really pretty resort, I don't think I'd want to stay there, it didn't seem as friendly as the other resorts.

Also, you mentioned your Ohana ADR was at 5:00--I was at the Poly at the same time! Before we left for the airport my family stopped at the Poly and walked around and looked in BouTiki and stuff. I think we were there from like 4:30ish to 5. I just found that interesting haha, maybe we passed by each other?

The ride was very nice. It was a little overcast at that point, so I was just hoping it wouldn't start raining! We probably did pass each other at the Poly, since we were also looking around at that point! Small world. :goodvibes

I found your TR today and thoroughly enjoyed reading it.

Can't wait to read morepopcorn::

Welcome! Glad to hear your enjoying it!

Joining in. All caught up, thanks to the handy dandy links.....:thumbsup2
also thinking of using ridemax, how did it work out for you???

Lovin' your trip report! :cutie:

Oh and even though I had read tons of good stuff about RideMax, I finally bought it after reading your TR.

Thanks - and I think I will do a TR when I return from my October trip!!!! You have inspired me! :cheer2:

Hi and thanks! RideMax was awesome, and I wouldn't hesitate to use it again if I was going for any length of time. Our next trip will be brief and will mostly consist of Food and Wine Festival and MNSSHP, so really no use for RideMax. I'm so glad to hear I've inspired you. I think that's one of the best compliments I've ever received! :goodvibes

Thursday morning I woke up around 6:45. It was time to do the infamous Toy Story Mania! Mom had been having some insomnia issues for awhile, and the previous night was one of them. She really didn't want to be there for rope drop. So, I got up and reran the RideMax plan for a later start time, but I ended up having to leave out the Great Movie Ride because if we didn't ride it soon after opening, the wait would be really long. No big deal, I rode it twice last time, and Mom rode it once. I decided that I would get there early and redeem my Give a Day certificate for FPs. (We had planned on using it at AK, but as it turned out, we didn't need it then anyway).

I was at the bus stop at 7:30, and a bus pulled up within 2 minutes-this was the beginning of our really great luck with DHS buses. When the bus arrived at DHS, I headed for the will call window. The cast member really did not want me to redeem that certificate! She gave me every excuse in the book as to why I shouldn't use it, including:
~Rock 'n' Roller Coaster is closed (which was fine, as I wasn't planning on riding this day)
~The park isn't expected to be busy today
~If you wait for your whole party you can get two of these cards
Lady, just give me my FP card already! Of course, I was polite to her face though.
When she finally accepted that I was redeeming this card today whether she liked it or not, she had to have her manager override it twice. Finally, I walked away with my green Donald FP card. It was good for 3 "Donald" attractions, and 3 "Daisy" attractions. I decided I would get FPs for Toy Story Mania and Star Tours.

I got to the turnstiles at around 8am. Of course, there was only like one other family there. I was the first person at my turnstile, where I stood and waited for 50 minutes for the park to open.
GEDC0941.JPG

During this time, the only real entertainment was the people casting/filming the crowd for the American Idol Experience. I did not participate in this foolishness. Finally, the long wait was over. They let us into the park to the intersection of Hollywood & Sunset.
GEDC0942.JPG

I was right at the rope. I took some pictures of the rope and the crowd behind me.

GEDC0944.JPG

Paige Turner and the director guy came out and told us we were in a movie titled "Celebrate You" and we all had to say "Hollywood, here we come!" This began the mad dash to TSM.

I power walked right behind those CMs. Being alone was a great advantage, because it meant I could bob and weave around the families with strollers. When we approached the attraction, I was surprised at how many people went to get FPs. I counted once we were inside the building and I was the 15th person in line. However, when we got to the actual loading area, I was assigned to line 5. To my amazement, the first tram was parked at my gate! That's right friends, I was the FIRST person to get on Toy Story Mania that morning!!! I didn't have a partner, so off we went. I did okay on that ride. My score was 26,700.
GEDC0945.JPG

GEDC0947.JPG

GEDC0950.JPG

After that rush, I immediately went to get FPs. Much of the madness at the machines had died down by now. I got 1 using my ticket, and 3 more using the card. I thought something was wrong with the card, because when you insert your ticket, it will slide it back out so you can grab it after the FP is released. When I inserted the card, it flew right back out onto the ground and it took a few seconds for the FP to appear. It was fine though and I got all the FPs, so I headed to the left, into the Backlot Area. I met the Cars and got my picture with them (no wait) and the camera told me "Memory Card Full". How could this be? Our memory card was pretty big and I'd cleared it last night. I opened the camera, and to my utter dismay I found the card not there. I left it in the computer the night before and the camera itself only holds about 10 pictures. I called mom and asked her to bring the card when she came later.
GEDC0951.JPG

My next stop was Star Tours, and the only FP machine that was open was specifically for people with GAD cards. I decided I would try to go meet some characters since I had time to kill. As I approached the hat, I could see a bunch of them coming out! I quickly jumped in line for Goofy & Pluto and was the second or third person to meet them.
Photo0033.jpg

Photo0035.jpg

Photo0040.jpg

Goofy saw my birthday button and wanted to know how old I was. (He did a great job pantomiming that!) When I said 19, he put his head in his hands and shook it in sadness/disbelief! They were funny. I saw Chip & Dale nearby, so I went to meet them. They had a slight line, but not too bad. A young girl and her parents were next to me in line and they saw my binder and wanted to know what it was. Since it was my autograph binder, they thought it was really cool that I had a page specifically for each character. The daughter and I compared books, and she showed me that Goofy drew her a self portrait. We also talked about the homework her teacher had given her to do-8 pages a night, I think she said. Finally, it was my turn to meet this crazy pair!
Photo0041.jpg

I had more time to kill, so I sought out a photopass photographer in front of the hat. She had me do a ton of shots, including some magic ones. Her husband was the other photographer at the time, so he did the one with the balloons because she didn't have that on her camera and she thought it would be cool because of my birthday button.

I still had time to kill, so I went back to Pixar Place and joined the fairly long line to meet Buzz and Woody. I had some fun talking to the families and small kids around me. It was my turn now!
Photo0056.jpg

They were so flirty! Buzz kissed my hand and Woody wanted a "birthday kiss". (I think it may have been because I was the only teenage female in a room full of 4 year olds, but who knows?)

Now it was approaching the time Mom said she'd be there, so I headed to the front of the park to meet her and grabbed a seat in front of Sid Cahuenga's. I was eating Poptarts and people watching, when two of Hollywood's finest-Honey Darling and her husband-struck up a conversation with me. It was really funny, and here's some of the conversations, that took place.

Husband: Is that a poptart? Can I have one?
Honey: No, you can't. It's too many calories.
Husband: Can I just smell it?
Honey: No, you'll inhale too many calories.
Husband: Oh, so it's your birthday?
Me: Yes.
Husband: How old are you, poptart? I'll guess you at 20.
Me: I'm 19!
Honey: Oh, you're on fire today, dear!
Husband: Are you waiting for somebody?
Me: Yeah, my mom.
Husband: Where is she coming from?
Me: Our hotel.
Husband: Do you both have phones?
Me: Yes.
Husband: Leave her behind, poptart! There's too much to do for you to be sitting around waiting for her!

At this point, they told me to have a nice day and moved on to harrass...er, converse with another park guest. Mom arrived not long after and we headed back to the hat, where we saw part of the HSM3 show-obviously not as good as the movie!

"Mike will be out in 1 minute"

As we waited for some more characters to come out, I took a picture of all the FPs I had collected.

The characters were coming!! I met Minnie, Donald & Daisy, and Stitch this round.

I decided I wanted to meet Mike & Sulley near the Backlot Tour, so we headed that way. They weren't out but the CM said Mike would be out in a minute so we decided to wait. Well, one minute turned into 10, and then another CM came out and said it would be about 10-15 minutes more, so we left. We were right there, so we headed to the Backlot Tour. I took a picture of the water set.

As we continued walking, I saw the thing I was most excited to see:

The chicken coop from Hannah Montana: The Movie! (Yes, I like Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus. I think the show and movie are adorable and funny).

We continued on to the tram part, where I took more pictures.

At the exit of the ride, we looked at the cool costumes and props. Here's Queen Narcissa's costume from Enchanted (sorry about the glare).

And Davy Jones' organ from Pirates of the Caribbean.

We were hungry by now, about 12:30 so we walked to the nearby Studio Catering Co. While Mom ordered I went to grab a table. I had a conversation with a older gentleman castmember about my name, but I can't recall exactly what was said. :confused3 From our table we could see the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids play area.

Our choice off the menu was the grilled vegetable sandwich with apple slices (I also thought the buffalo chicken sandwich looked good), a bottle of water, a Coke, and a marble cheesecake.

The sandwich was very good. I was expecting much worse, especially because DHS is not known for it's food, but it surprised me. The apple slices tasted chemicalized. The cheesecake was great for being prepackaged!

After lunch, the heat and humidity were beginning to get to us, so we decided we would do TSM and Star Tours, and then head out. We rode TSM twice in a row with our FPs, and did progressively better each time (I'm on the left, Mom's on the right both times).

On our way over to Star Tours, we stopped by the umbrella from "Singin' in the Rain". Even when someone else told us where to stand, we couldn't make it rain. It must have been turned off that day.

We also looked at some of the backdrops in the Streets of America. Here's San Francisco and New York.

When we arrived at Star Tours, the FP line appeared to be closed. I showed our passes to the CM, who waved us in the regular line. As we got closer to the pod, we saw why they hadn't been collected. There was NO wait, and we literally walked on the ride. How cool is that ride?! Mom did fine, even though she wasn't sure about it at first. We've seen that on another Sing Along video we have called "Disneyland Fun", and for many years she thought she wouldn't be able to handle the simulator. At this point, I really wasn't feeling well so we headed toward the exit. Mom browsed in a few shops, but I hurried her along. When we got to the stop, the bus was there! Told you we had good luck with these buses. :goodvibes I think we probably stopped at BB on the way back to Kidani, but it wasn't a long ride and soon we were "home".

"Can we swim under people?"
