Lights, Cameras, Cancellation! An Unorthodox Excursion to the Wonderful World O’ Disney. (Updated 6/15 - Of Rats and Rockets)

Disney trips come in many shapes and sizes and this one was certainly unique. Uncooperative weather, unexpected cancellations, and a random HBO film crew all conspired to make this trip completely different than what I was expecting. Yet despite it all, the trip was also deeply enjoyable. Of the five days I spent in Orlando, all of them saw me on property in some way, shape or form. That said, I only was able to visit a park on one day. Also before plunging much deeper, I should note that this installment is light on photos as I was mostly recording video. Other installments will have quite a few pics, though video is the primary way I documented the journey. I'll add links at the of each one for the video related to that installment.

There isn’t much of a crew to introduce as it was primarily a solo excursion with occasional bouts of coworker side-kickery. This was, first and foremost, a work trip. A significant portion of my daily employment is devoted to Web Accessibility compliance, specifically the WCAG 2.1 standards. If that sounds boring, trust you have only scratched the surface of drudgery. But for reasons I cannot fully comprehend, I enjoy doing it. When I’m not knee deep in governmental regulations, I’m also the producer for our sports radio station as well as for our video production studio, a project manager/subject matter expert for all of our stadium & auditorium PA systems, and the tech advisor for the high school master scheduling database. (The joys of working in a small school district is that one wears many hats.)

There is an annual conference in Orlando devoted to Assistive Technology and this year I was one of the speakers. My coworker and I traveled down on a Tuesday and departed on a Saturday. While our schedule was supposed to be full on Thursday & Friday, and half full on Wednesday and Saturday, things didn’t turn out as planned. Enter Omicron, that rascally little variant that stirred up a crap ton of drama. We got a warning the week before that there were a large number of attendees who were switching to virtual attendance. When we arrived, we found workshop after workshop being cancelled. While this sucked in that we really wanted to attend several of them, it also opened gaping holes in our schedule. And when Bubba is in Orlando, an open schedule means one thing…Disney.

But before we get into all of that and how exactly it all played out, we must first actually get to Orlando. This is after all a trip report and all trips need a beginning. In what would become an omen for the week ahead, it was a cold and drizzly morning when I left Biscuit manor and drove over to my office to pick up my Associate Producer / Webmaster Cole. For convenience sake, we were flying out of our little regional airport which is basically a 7-11 with a runway. When we arrived, I was surprised to see how crowded the parking lot was and how many giant tents were setup outside. We pulled through the drop off area (because I was staring at the tents and missed the dadgum entrance for the long-term parking) and we passed by a dozen semi-trucks all offloading massive lights and cameras. Turns out HBO was filming a mini-series inside the lobby. For a couple of dudes who love video production, this was like winning the lottery.

We got ourselves parked and followed the signs to a doorway at the end of the building and immediately our jaws dropped. Then entire lobby had been transformed into a Braniff Airlines terminal. There was a video village setup, rows directors chairs full of important looking people, grips running all over the place with gear, stacks of 1970’s period luggage, and the most amazing cameras I have ever seen. We checked in and oogled everything as long as we could but regretfully we were not able to film anything and were shooed out as soon as our bags were checked. They ushered us out the door we came in, around the building and up to the upstairs area where our gate was. We couldn’t see them actually filming but after about 30 min, we could hear them shouting for quiet, shouts of “Rolling”, “Action”, “Cut”, “Reset” and so on. It was a really cool way to start the trip.

Before too long we boarded our little plane and headed to the big city of Dallas to transfer over to a real aircraft for the Orlando leg of the trip. What is there to say about DFW? It’s big. They’ve got a monorail. We ate some Chinese food. We swapped planes. (I don’t recall much about this portion of trip as I spent most of the first flight, all of the layover, and all of the next flight on my laptop working.) Though I do recall texting my buddy about the effects of Chinese cabbage, pressurized planes, a three hour flight, my failure to account for these things when selecting and entrée, and the potential of oxygen mask deployment.

Upon arrival in Orlando we encountered our next unexpected moment of inconvenience…our gate’s jet bridge was broken. After 30 min of them trying to fix it, they finally backed us up and moved us elsewhere, but this took another 15 min. Sitting on a runway in Orlando wanting desperately to deplane and begin your adventure royally sucks, but at least we were there.

(Our view for 30 min)

Once we finally made it off the plane, I headed to the fake monorail and the joys of Orlando arrival finally began to sink in. We were staying off property for this trip and renting a car. After claiming our bags, we headed down to Enterprise. After nearly being killed by a car while trying to cross the street, we said hello to our ride for the week, (a red Jeep Cherokee) and headed off to check in at our resort.

Thus concludes the introduction to this tale. To see the 3 Min condensed version and get a somewhat obscured peek at the HBO Film trucks, you can watch along here:

I'm here! I'm so happy I found your report.

It's not a GB report without some cabbage.

Love your background music, very uplifting.

Looking forward to more.

What kind of sick, twisted friends do you have?

All things considered, I would expect the people sitting behind you on that flight were grateful for once that they had to wear masks.

Honestly, after 2 years of Covid, haven't we suffered enough? GreatBiscuit on a plane. On cabbage? Oy gevalt!

Hey GB, how’re things?! A mutual friend whose name sometimes starts with Z alerted me to this TR so I decided to stop in. Looking forward to hearing about your trip! And hoping for no more cabbage stories. Just saying’.

Not that guy! You can't believe anything he says. Although this time it was true I guess. For the record...there's ALWAYS a cabbage story.

Following along. Looking forward to reading more.
Thank you! I appreciate it!

This is a week much anticipated in the life of a school employee...spring break! I have much to update and hope to get through several installments by the time the week is done!

More to come...

Previously, we had in arrived Orlando, rented a Jeep and set out into the great unknown. (And by unknown I mean the 417 Toll Road.) This was a somewhat new adventure as I had grown rather used to Disney’s Magical Express. May it rest in peace.

It took us about 30 minutes to reach our destination, the Lake Buena Vista Suites..Spa…Village…Outlet…Resort…thing. When I sent over the conference information to our secretary she asked me if we wanted to stay at the convention hotel or find our own accommodations. I did debate this as the convention was held at Caribe Royale. I loved that resort when I stayed there 3 years ago and they have remodeled so I was eager to see the new rooms. HOWEVER, I was also intrigued by Lake Buena Vista Resort. In the end, I wound up booking it which saved us a LOT of money AND gave us each out own room. We booked a 2 bedroom condo for $127 a night. While the reviews were mixed, I figured it was worth rolling the dice. In the end, I was happy we did. Having 2 bedrooms and a kitchen was amazing! While this installment is not the resort review, I can tell you that it was really nice.

So if this is not going to be about the resort, then what in the name of Barnaby Jones am I rambling on about? In a word, Barbecue.

We ran our luggage upstairs and checked out the view, but at this point we were hungreh, bordering on hangry.

I learned the hard way the dangers of booking a dining reservation on my travel day as it seems my flight is invariably delayed, and on one tragic trip, cancelled. Instead, we were doing quick service and up on the docket this fateful night was The Polite Pig.

I’ve seen the videos. I’ve read the reviews. Most folks seem to love this place. Yet at this point, I was not fully convinced. There are countless BBQ joints within an hour of my house, including the world famous Franklin’s. I have a pretty high standard when it comes to this sort of thing and I was skeptical of the claims being made. Just as I wouldn’t expect a Canadian to trust my views on Poutin, (foreshadowing for those of you keeping score) I had a very “I’ll just see about that,” attitude.

We drove over to Disney Springs and parked in the Lime Garage. It didn’t take long to get through security and the smell of glorious smoked meat soon greeted us as we made our way to the escalator. (If you will allow a momentary digression, I should also take a moment to point out that Coworker Cole had never before stepped foot on Disney Property.). The line was to the door but not out of it and after about 10 min waiting in line, we were able to order.

I decided to go for the brisket because…Texas. Coworker Cole went with the ribs. I also added a Mac and Cheese to round things out. In addition, the idea of a sauce bar intrigued me and grabbed an assortment of sauces to try out. Our food came quickly and I gave it shot.

I have to say….it didn’t suck. In fact it was really good. Now it was not Franklins, but then nothing is. It was as good as a few of my local spots and actually better than several of them. All in all I was impressed. The restaurant was really cool inside and I thoroughly enjoyed it. (For the curious, Lil John's Signature Porter Sauce was my favorite.) To see the full video of what we ordered, what the place looks like, and my immediate thoughts on it, I offer this link:

After we ate we set out for an evening at The Springs, but that is a story for another day.

Great review. We enjoyed our meal here to except I got the wrong side. Before going I kept saying I was going to get the cauliflower but at the last minute I got the brussels sprouts. They were not good. They were burnt. DH had the mac n cheese and really liked it too.

Joining in! The Polite Pig is yummy. I have had the brisket and Mac and cheese. I really enjoyed it and would definitely recommend it.
Now I want brisket for breakfast lol 😆

There's never a wrong time to eat Brisket. I'm in Houston now visiting my aunt and they have a place here that has Brisket Breakfast Kolaches.....Life Changing!

Following the feast O’ Cue we wandered around Disney Springs a bit and I gave coworker Cole the lay of the land. The next day we were splitting up and he would be on his own to explore.

My initial plan for day two was built around my convention workshop. This year I had a pre-conference workshop scheduled. My plan was to head to breakfast on property, then head to the workshop, then head to Epcot for the rest of the day. In what would become a weeklong trend, a cancellation would step end and change it all completely.

The week we went happened to be the height of Omicron. In the days leading up to departure, multiple attendees and presenters started cancelling or changing their registration to virtual. My Wednesday workshop was a victim, but by that point we already had our plane tickets locked in and our resort reservation deposit paid. That freed up my day completely which I was prepared to not complain about in the least bit.

I pivoted my plans for a full day at Epcot. We departed Disney Springs and hit up Walmart before heading back to the resort around 9:00. I spent a couple of hours finishing some things for work and finalizing my presentation for the workshop I was teaching on Friday. I was still on Central Time so It was around midnight before I finally settled down and hit the proverbial hay.

My alarm awakened me dark and early and I quickly dressed. I grabbed the frozen water bottles out of the fridge, loaded up with chargers and my gimbal, and departed our humble abode. I was in my Lyft at 6:30 and heading over to The Grand Floridian.

654199

Though we had been to Disney Springs the night before, this really felt like I was finally truly arriving on property. When I arrived at the Grand Flo, it was deserted and quiet. I cut through the lobby and headed outside to soak in the pre-dawn ambience of the resort.

It was amazing walking around and watching the world wake up.

My Dining reservation was at 7:30 and at the appointed hour, I headed inside and checked in with the host. It didn’t take long to get a seat and I was soon escorted back to my table. This was my first time to eat at this location and I was excited to give it a try. There were not many people there at all this morning and I was nice to sit and relax before the day got crazy.

654206

My server brought a pot of hot coffee which I appreciated after an hour in the cool morning mist and drizzle. For the entire week before hand, the forecast had called for partly cloud and mild weather. That morning it switched to overcast and rainy ALL day. But my grandmother has a saying “Sometimes you have to make your own sunshine” and I was determined not to let the rain dampen my spirits.

654208

I wound up ordering the Grand Breakfast and asked for egg whites so I wouldn’t die. (Egg Yolks and I have a love-hate relationship). The plate consisted of Scrambled Egg Whites, sausage, bacon, and hash browns. All in all…it was great! It wasn’t a huge meal, but it worked out perfectly as I was planning to partake of the all the Festival of The Arts goodness.

654209

My breakfast didn’t last nearly as long as I had budgeted so after it was done, I did another tour of the resort, sat in the lobby and answered a few emails, then headed up to catch the monorail. It was finally time for the one thing I had looked forward to the most – a Return to Epcot.

Just as I wouldn’t expect a Canadian to trust my views on Poutin (sic),
I have no idea what poutine is, but I've heard things. Still, I've been banned from Canada (both the country and the WS pavilion for starkly different reasons). If they don't want me, I don't want their food!

But my grandmother has a saying “Sometimes you have to make your own sunshine”
My grandmother had a saying also! But it was, "get your filthy feet off my coffee table, you little piece of #*&&!"

Your pictures are amazing as always. We love the GF; it's a very Disney feeling place. Have never been to the Polite Pig. Query, if one only has one afternoon in Disney Springs, should he chose Art Smith's Homecoming or the Pig?

Hey GB, I'm here. You can start now...

Oh. Wait.

Sorry!!

I'm here now, please continue. ;)

Back to read!

all conspired to make this trip completely different than what I was expecting.

Seems like every trip has some level of nonsense.

You're hitting all the nostalgia buttons.

AND gave us each out own room.
Given the previous text conversation, I'm sure he was grateful.

Absolutely gorgeous!

Sigh... perfection!

It was finally time for the one thing I had looked forward to the most – a Return to Epcot.

Let's go!!!

You are on a roll now! Ahh, the joys of spring break! We love the Polite Pig and have never had a bad meal there. There are a lot of good to great QS locations in DS, but I’d say “The Pig” is the best of them.

That said, in answer to Z’s question (and I suspect you’d agree), Art Smith still wins. It’s a totally different experience, though. Quick vs. sit down, with the latter being significantly pricier. But both are great meals, with awesome mac & cheese!

I am also a big fan of GF Cafe, though your breakfast looks mediocre. That might have something to do with my aversion to egg whites. That bacon looked a little undercooked for my taste, too. But I love me some GF and it looked so pretty and peaceful at that early hour! Great videos in both installments, too! Can’t wait to see what you did in my favorite park!

Had to jump in to say there is at least one other person here that knows about WCAG standards. I work in an ADA compliance office and wish I knew about this conference opportunity in Orlando! Really enjoying the trip report so far!
