lets talk property taxes

I'm in a suburb of Chicago. Our property taxes include payments to:

FOREST PRESERVE
COUNTY BLDG COMM
TWP TOWN FUNDS
SCHOOL DISTRICT (Early Childhood-High School)
COMM COLLEGE
VILLAGE
PARK DIST
PUBLIC LIBRARY
COUNTY

We also pay "Registration" fees to the school district for every child that we have enrolled. The fees vary based on the grade level of the student.

Our taxes last year were about $6,300 on a home that they have valued at $239,000 (we haven't had a house sell for the value listed on the tax records for years).

Edited to add... the tax rate on our house is $7.7630/$100 of the assessed value. The assessed value is supposed to be 1/3 of the "fair market value" but with the housing crash, the assessed value no longer accurately reflects the fair market value.

To those paying a school tax, do you pay that whether or not you had a child enrolled?

We are in NJ all bundled together and last year it was a whopping $16,500! And yes in NJ school tax is for everyone.

In IL, the tax for schools (community colleges as well) is included in the property tax bill. Every property owner (residential and commercial) pays it.

Mine are about the same. I'm in Bergen.

Funny story, I was recently talking to a relative who lives in Florida. He wasn't really listening to me when I was talking property taxes. He went on complaining about his and said his were over $5,000 (he is always the type to try to one-up someone), to which I replied: "No you misunderstand me when I said five I meant 5 figures." To which he promptly shut up.

karenos;)

Long Island here. More and more people move because of taxes.
We pay $10,000.00 for a 60 x100 lot size, no basement or garage.
We're here for our jobs but hope to be gone in 8 years.

I'm in the piedmont area of NC and my property value is $149,080 and property taxes are $1,082. It includes county taxes, fire department, and school taxes. I live in the county and pay my own water bill @ $240yr, garbage $180 yr, & have a septic system. In the city, property owners have to pay city AND county school taxes (same value house is double my taxes) and must hook up to city water/sewer/garbage which is $80-100mo.

I pay one property tax bill..it includes everything that entails and I don't pay the schools or anything separately.

I have to say..the size of the property tax bills in some places is mind blowing to me. I have a cookie cutter type house on an average sized lot and my total bill for the year is under $1,000. Makes me very grateful as the time comes upon me to pay.

Ours are together. I can't imagine taxes being cheaper in PA - I know that 4 counties here are in the top 10 in the nation (mine being the highest in the state). $11,000 (which is about the average).

Mine are about 300$ no typo... $300 a year they were more expensive when we moved in then we got casinos in PA and they went down about 75$ a year.

I'm one county up from Bucks County....

I'm in NY, about 100 miles north of the city. My school taxes are about 6k, property about 5.5k, and water and sewer another 1k or so a year. We do get garbage pickup, but for this kind of money I'd happily buy a dump sticker. The sales tax rate here is 8%. I have a 2400 sq. foot house on about an acre and a half. The school system is not great and all of our kids go to private school, so tuition on top if that. If we had it to do all over again, we'd probably move to a better district, even if the taxes were higher, in order to avoid the huge tuition bill on top of the tax bill. But, I do love NY...just not how expensive it is to live here!

Here in NYS, we pay local and county taxes in January and school taxes in September. School tax is always higher. For us, the total is roughly 5200/year.

Wow thats weird- I am in NY and we get the tax bill in Dec- exactly half is due in January and the other half is due in May-- doesn't get split between school and county here.

We pay around $7,000 in Ocean County, NJ. We have no kids in school, no garbage pickup, we have our own well and septic - not getting much for our money.

We live in the same county, but 6 of us are crammed into a 1400 sq ft townhouse...our property taxes were about 3500 last year.

Central Jersey here, and we pay about $6000 on a 1400 square foot house with .5 acre and a detached 2 car garage.

Also in suburban Chicago and we paid over $7000 for a house that is about 2000 sf and has 3 br & 2 1/2 baths. Our new house is 3500 sf and we only pay $9800 in property taxes since we are in an unincorporated area and pay less of the town taxes. We also paif our own garbage, water & sewer at both places.

1000 sq ft on almost 2 acres, well and septic, pay ourselves for garbage, and no fire department (volunteer) or police (state police). I think school tax is about $790 and county tax is around $300. We also pay 1% on earned income for the municipality and the PA state tax.

Just had the house appraised at $110,000 (only lost about $10k since last appraisal in 2002.) I have no idea how they do assessment for taxes, but the raising of property taxes is all you read about in the papers. 4 articles in yesterday's paper about property tax rate increases in the 4 different school districts local to the paper.

My property tax on the house is lower than when we first got married and bought a mobile home and rented a lot and was responsible for the property tax.
