Las Vegas?

My DD has her 40th birthday in January and we (along with my other DD) are doing a girls' trip to Las Vegas. We don't drink or gamble but are soooo looking forward to Barry Manilow and the Miss America Pageant.

We just got from Vegas and had a wonderful time! I definitely suggest going to the Planet Hollywood Miracle Mile Shops for shopping-- and the Forum Shops, too.
Once you move over to the MGM Grand, Wolfgang Puck's Bar and Grill is really good according to my DBF. It's right in the middle of the casino, so if you like to people watch, it's great. Prices are not bad, either.
We had dinner at the Red Square, which is a Russian-themed restaurant. Very yummy, probably around the same prices as Wolfgang Puck's. It's in Mandalay Bay, which is very close to the MGM Grand.
You'll have a great time!!

I have to vouch for the Wolfgang Puck's @ MGM. We had our wedding reception there and it was excellent food! Best wedding food I've ever had! lol

......Cirque Du Soleil Ka....If anyone has any mid-priced places you really like, let me know.
All the Cirque shows in Vegas are great. Over the years (I have to go there once a year for a seminar, several times in the past 35 years for conventions, and a couple family functions, weddings, birthday celebration) I have seen -O-, KA, Beatles Love, Mystere, several twice, one three times. I hope to see Elvis Cirque next Feb. Good choice, Krista. :thumbsup2

As for restaurants, maybe look into Battista's Hole In the Wall. http://www.battistaslasvegas.com/ Old time Vegas dining, back when Sinatra and the like were doing the town. It is a great restaurant, good atmosphere.

....People approaching you? I have a day all to myself on one the days we are at the Hard Rock (not our first choice because of location, but it's where his conference is). I am planning to walk up to the Strip and roam around that day, and then roam back to the hotel. I'm sure the maps make it look shorter and easier, but the actual distance looks like only a little over a mile to walk up Harmon or Flamingo streets to the Strip. I can walk a mile, but I would like a first-hand perspective on it. If it's too scary, since I'll be alone I will just take a taxi.

We will take a taxi from the Hard Rock to the MGM on the day we move. It looks like the driver should be able to take Paradise Road to Tropicana and over to the MGM. Friends of ours who go to Vegas many times a year have told us to ask taxi drivers to take Paradise over to a cross street and up to the Strip, and to completely avoid riding in a car/taxi anywhere on Las Vegas Blvd/The Strip.

I'm sorry you didn't enjoy yourselves. Since we "have" to go for work, then I'm planning to make the most of it even if afterward we have no desire to ever go back. I just wish we were in the MGM or another big Strip hotel the whole time.
You will be approached, but not touched, by the ubiquitous porn slappers. They will come close to you, put the fliers in your face, but, not touch you.

The distances, as said, can be very deceiving, due to the monstrous size of the various resorts, signs, etc. You might look at walking from the Grand Floridian to the Contemporary (actually can't walk it, but..) as not too bad a walk, but it is a long way, if you could walk it.

I do not gamble nor party either, I am a financial planner and goes against my grain, LOL, to gamble. Just not fun for me. But the town is great to see, at lease once. It really is spectacular. But for me, the best part of a Vegas trip is the ride to the airport to go home. But the food, shows (most of them), shopping, site seeing, is really good.

.....It still shocks me that people go to Vegas for reasons other then to drink and gamble LOL. But then it also blows me away that people without kids choose to get married at disney or spend that much to go there with no kids??? If you are with no kids find some bargains to Europe or the caribbean or something.
I go to LV for above reasons, never to gamble or drink. I go to Disney, usually twice a year, have had my kids there twice in the past eleven years. My trips are usually solo, but like Krista, meet many folks there whom I have made good friends with over the years, Krista and her mom among them.

I've stayed at Luxor and Excalibur and was pleased with both. BFF's dad LOVES the Monte Carlo!!!

If you guys don't mind paying a kind of big door fee, the Voodoo Lounge at Rio is a really nice place to hang out. I enjoy touring all the hotels along the strip and there are lots of things to do. Madame Tussaud's is pretty cool (Venetian), there is TV testing place back in the back of MGM. Great shopping and fun shows. Enjoy yourself!!!

There is an Earl of Sandwich in Planet Hollywood (near the street entrance) that is open 24 hours! There's also a Texas de Brazil somewhere on the strip but we haven't been there yet.

One thing we didn't realize the first many times we went to Vegas is that valet parking at the casinos is free - just tip the guy a couple of bucks on pickup. This saves a ton of time vs self-parking and walking to the casino area since self-parking is always fairly far from the casino.

We stayed at Paris in August. Mon Ami Gabi has an excellent quiche Lorraine for breakfast. We also ate at Pinks Hot Dog and Earl of Sandwich (their sandwiches were so good we ate there twice) Both of those are at Planet Hollywood Mile High Shops. We do lots of walking up and down the whole strip. Our legs get tired, but it just is so fun to do! We ate at the Paris Buffet which was OK, but the M resort just off the strip has the best buffet by far!

My experience? KristaTX alone probably won't be approached. The porn slappers seem to hit up couples and males. Not that I want them in my face by any means, but whether it's me not making eye contact, or just general policy, I've never had anyone try to hand me one of the ads. Similarly, the time share people seem to only approach couples.

Couple of other dining suggestions (since somebody else mentioned Earl of Sandwich, and several people have boasted about Mon Ami Gabi already ;)). Hash House-a-Go-Go in the Imperial Palace has HUGE servings. Firefly on Paradise (on Paradise Road, obviously, in a small strip plaza a few hundred feet north of East Flamingo, opposite the Wells Fargo office) has really good tapas.

Well I didn't really say earlier, but we arrived tonight :). No time yet to see much, but we have a nice view from the 18th floor. The Hard Rock is a nice resort, but it's probably not going to be my favorite style-wise. Looking forward to seeing others and trying the MGM.

Thanks for the continued replies, everyone. I'm only using my phone for the Internet, so I'm not going to address everyone individually right now, but I am reading everything. Definitely going to try some of the restaurants mentioned. And beignets?? One of my favorite foods at WDW is the beignets at POFQ. Yum!

And Long time, no see, Dan :).

Hey Krista,

We are leaving for Vegas today. Maybe I'll see you on the strip somewhere. :goodvibes We're eating dinner at the Hard Rock on Friday.

Have a safe trip and fun when you get here :). We'll be at Ka Thursday night and Blue Man Friday. Let me know if you happen to be going to either of those shows. Where are you eating at the Hard Rock?

We'll be eating at Nobu. I don't think we'll be doing any shows. :(

The card slapper guys were literally everywhere when I was in Vegas with my girlfriends. It was near impossible to avoid them. I ended up keeping a few of the cards, joking around that they were my "girlie trading cards".

We stayed at Harrah's. I'd probably stay there again. It was affordable, safe, and there was always something to do. Plus you can walk to a million places from there. My second choice would be New York New York, mostly for the fun decor and the roller coaster.

Be aware that while the majority of the strip is safe and fun at any time of the night, not ALL of the strip is safe. When you get down to the end it can be a bit scary. My friends and I went down to the Stratosphere on the bus to go on all the rides and have some drinks. By the time we got done it was very late and our bus never came. We ended up having to walk back and got accosted by some shady characters who surrounded us asking for money. We panicked and ran (and all feel that we narrowly avoided getting mugged). Then further along the path we came upon a pervert in the bushes. :crazy2: This was around Circus Circus. We made it back to our rooms alright but we were all a bit shaken and nervous. It did make for a good story though!
I'm not trying to scare anybody. I had a fantastic time overall and can't wait to go back. Just be aware of your surroundings!

I didn't gamble in Vegas. People still don't believe me when I say that.

Also, a lot of people without kids go to Disney and enjoy it.
<---case in point ;)
