January Dining Review and Pictures - Update 12/8 Sunshine and Liberty Tree

I was really looking forward to this dinner. Our ADR was added at a rather late point, I think four weeks before our trip or so. We had planned to eat at Whispering Canyon that night, but just before the trip I was reading so many great reviews of the FF that I really wanted to try it. I was especially eyeing the steak as it was described as char crusted on the menu. I like my meat a bit “burned” on the outside, but it is very difficult to get a good grilled steak here in Germany. So we decided to not go to Whispering Canyon and try something new for us instead.

I even got a recommendation for a server from someone on the AKL Jambo thread. Stupid me, when we checked in I absolutely forgot to ask for this server. Our ADR was for 7:30, but I think we arrived about 20 min early and were seated immediately. The restaurant was not full, but I think about more than half of the tables were occupied. We were seated rather close to the front of the restaurant, about in the third row of tables from the entrance. This was our view into the restaurant:

We decided to start the evening with a drink and chose the Patron Margarita:

DSC04965.jpg

I found out that I really like margaritas, I guess that's because I love lemons! We were also served some bread. It was warm sourdough with a rather large piece of butter. It went very well with our drinks!

DSC04971.jpg

I really liked the napkins they had there. Personally I am a huge fan of cloth napkins and love it that so many (all?) table service restaurants in WDW have them. At the FF they had this design of flying fish on them as you can see in the bread basket. Here is a close up of them:

DSC04986.jpg

Our server here was absolutely wonderful and I did not feel to bad about having forgotten to ask for Bob, the recommended one. However, once we were seated we discovered that Bob was serving the tables next to us. And during the course of our meal we were able to witness some real Disney magic he and the kitchen staff did: One of Bob's tables was a couple who looked a bit older, I would guessed that they might have been in their 50's or 60's. She was wearing a birthday button. I noticed them when I overheard Bob saying something like “we normally don't fry anything here at this restaurant” He did not say that condescending or so and then went on to discuss the menu and possible options with the husband on that table. A bit later he reappeared with a chef and there was more talk going on. In the meantime we were busy eating our food, but noticed that the other table was rather quiet. I got the impression that the wife was a bit embarrassed. When they were served there main dishes, the husband was served a fried fish and chips. And just after he was served the meal, Bob and the chef appeared and asked how everything was and the wife was just so thankful for them going out of their way to make something her husband wanted. The chef mentioned even that they made the remoulade sauce from scratch!

I was so amazed at that! Even reading the DISboards I am always amazed how much people expect substitutions and changes to their meals, just because of personal dislikes. Here in Germany it is not common at all, if you don't like the side dish, then you order something else. And at better restaurants it would even be considered bad manners, as the chef supposedly composed the meal so that the different ingredients supplement each other. But that someone would actually expect to get something that's not on the menu! Of course ,I understand if it is for health reasons and I applaud Disney for how accommodating they are for that, but just for taste. To be fair, I have no idea, whether this person had a health issue or not, but I got the impression that this wasn't the case.

Ok, but you came here to read about the food...

I got the Yellowfin Tuna Tartare with Far Eastern Accentuations - Hijiki seaweed, Yuzu Tobikko, sweet-spicy miso sauce, wasabi-cilantro oil, sesame crisps as my appetizer:

DSC04974.jpg

DSC04975.jpg

The tuna was wonderful! It was a very interesting dish with lots of different tastes going on. I really like that, so it was the right dish for me. However, I found the seaweed a bit of an acquired taste. I am ok with seaweed in maki sushi and in miso soup. But this was different and hat much more taste in it. It was layered with the tuna (it's the really dark stuff). In the end I am not sure I really liked it, but it did not spoil the dish for me. It's more a case of: that's interesting to taste once, but I don't need to eat it everyday. And I don't mean that to sound too negative.

C had the soup of the day. I am not sure wether it was butternut pumpkin or mushroom... It was presented beautifully:

DSC04973.jpg

That big crouton hat some cheese melted on it and it went very well with the soup. The soup itself was wonderful as well, very creamy. It was served in that gigantic plate and the middle of the plate was quite a good size still.

The reason why I wanted to eat at Flying Fish was to get the steak: Our Signature Flying Fish Cafe: Char Crusted New York Strip Steak - Wilted Rhapini, Roasted Fingerling Potatoes, rainbow carrots and Classic Sauce Foyot.

I love char crusted steaks and had read a number of great reviews of the FF steak. So I was set on ordering this for my main course. I was briefly considering something else, but I am so happy that I stuck to my original plan. I ordered the steak medium rare and it was cooked perfectly. I was not so sure wether I would like the cut, so far I mainly ordered filets. And the New York Strip is not a cut that is sold here in Germany – we cut our beef quite differently. So I really did not know what I was getting. But the meat was delicious. I thought it tasted meatier than the filet, which can be a bit boring because it is so soft. The steak was not tough in any way, but had a more dense texture to it, if that makes sense. The crust was absolutely wonderful!!

When I ordered the steak our server explained what Sauce Foyot was (it seemed to be a special variation of Sauce Bernaise) and asked wether I would prefer it on my steak or on the side. I was really glad that he asked, because I wanted to have it on the side and forgot to request it myself. I love Sauce Bernaise and I was pretty sure I would like that sauce, too, but I did not want any sauce to take away from the crust. Actually, I think a well seasoned steak does not need any sauce. It just takes away from its taste. I use the sauce more for the vegetables and the potatoes :) And it was a wonderful sauce for that purpose!!

So here are the pictures of this excellent steak:

DSC04984.jpg

C decided to order the scallops. They were served with risotto. I don't know what type it was, they seem to change that frequently. But I know that she absolutely adored this dish. I did not try it. I don't do scallops and I was busy trying to eat every bite of my steak! The scallops were presented beautifully as well as you can see in the second picture:

DSC04981.jpg

We both were incredibly full after our main courses, but C found a dessert that she really wanted to try on the menu. She had been talking that she needed to get a key lime pie while we were in Florida and on the menu they had this: Florida Key Lime Delice Fantasie Key Lime-Pineapple sorbet, chocolate accents. So I was persuaded to order this since I am really a fan of anything citrus!

Once again we loved the presentation:

This was wonderful. The pie like thing was more like a mouse on a cake with some lightly wipped cream, but it was nice and tart without being overpowering. The sorbet was great, too and just the right thing after our large meal.

We left the Flying Fish very happy and talked about how wonderful this meal had been. We decided that this was the best meal we ever had at WDW so far!

I would love to return here on every trip, but I am not sure we will make it there on my next trip in January. My sister, who will be at WDW for the first time, has me convinced to try Narcoosees for the first time and I am really excited about that. Then we want to eat at Jiko since we are staying at AKL and I really would love to show her California Grill as this is such a special experience. That's already 3 signature restaurants and unfortunately these places aren't cheap...

I think the steak at FF is the best I've had at WDW! We just love FF, can't wait to go back in October!:cool1:

Yeah, what Kathy said!

DH has had the steak twice and he cannot get enough of it! I am not a NY Strip kid but even I will admit that it was wonderful! I had the scallops in June and they were melt in your mouth fantastic!

So glad you guys enjoyed your meal there!

Great review! The FF items you ordered looked sooooo delicious. You described the difference between the cuts of steak perfectly.
Ever thought of being a food writer? LOL

:thumbsup2

Both of the entree's look fabulous. I have never eaten there so may have to give it a try as I love NY strip steaks.

That steak sounds just amazing! I have to convince Joe to go there at some point...we aren't big on fish - but I think he would really enjoy the steak! The restaurant looks beautiful.

enjoying your wonderful update. That Scallop looks really good...we haven't been at the Flying fish and I'm still on the fence if we should go thre on our December trip. You'll enjoy Narcoosee's and Jiko (Narcoossee's I love, I had the Maine Lobster and Crab cakes and in Jiko I had the Barbecue Beef Short Ribs...it was yummy). You'll love the Boma breakfast buffet when you stay at AKL.

I have to ask where you got that totally awesome Magic Kingdom shirt you are wearing in the first post!!! I love it. I have been looking for a vintage looking disney t and that one exceeds my expectations!

I read very often here on the boards that people said that the FF steak is the best steak on property. I haven't tasted that many, but it really was wonderful!

I really was a bit nervous, because FF seemed to get mixed reviews, but they seem to have gotten better in the recent two years I think.

Thanks for the compliment!! :goodvibes

It really was a fantastic steak. :thumbsup2

I really love the atmosphere there, too. It is so light. I don't appreciate the dark steak house look at all. There is a chicken dish on the menu as well, so I am sure even if you aren't big on fish there are menu choices!

C was so happy about those scallops, they were wonderful according to her. I spoke to her recently and she mentioned that this was the best meal ever at WDW.

Great review!! Never noticed the details on the napkins.

The napkins are cute, aren' they?? :goodvibes

Thanks for the compliment! When I saw that shirt, I really had to get it. It is from the Emporium, the big shop on Main Street and I did not see it anywhere else. It was even a bit hidden there, but I did browse the shop very thoroughly hoping to find a women's vintage shirt - that was my huge quest during that trip. :thumbsup2

C was not up for a park this morning and by the time I was out of bed, I realized that I could opt for breakfast or for rope drop at the MK. After the meal at FF yesterday I did not feel very hungry and I love rope drop, so it was an easy choice. This was a wonderful morning and rope drop was practically empty. I think that was the day I saw a 20 min wait time at Space Mountain at 2 pm...

At some point however, I started to feel hungry and I really wanted to get the hummus sandwich (Lighthouse Sandwich) at Columbia Harbour House again that I had gotten last year. I checked and they were open at 10:44 (that's the time on my receipt). I felt like I really hadn't enough fries during that trip so far, so I asked for the sandwich without chips but with a side order of fries:

DSC05056.jpg

The sandwich was very good again, but the hummus seemed to be a bit watery. Still I really liked it a lot and the fries were just the right thing at the time! I took my meal upstairs and sat there reading my book and enjoyed being at the MK. I think it was that morning when I thought about how lovely it would be to go on a solo trip one day. But I am very excited that my next trip is not a solo trip, but that I get to take my sister to WDW!

Columbia Harbour House is definitely one of my preferred CS locations in the MK. But I don't think I need to eat there on every trip. I might want to try the tuna sandwich next time, though...

I had every intention of getting a pineapple Dole Whip. I really like them a lot. But then I had read about the new citrus swirl they had added at Aloha Isle and was intrigued by that. So that's what I got:

DSC05061.jpg

It was just ok for me. I thought the orange did taste rather chemical, but the vanilla was great. I will stick to pineapple in the future!! Maybe I could get a pineapple swirl though???

We were supposed to eat the Wave that evening. But really did not feel like going to another table service meal that night at all. We rather wanted to have fun at the MK and get dinner there somewhere. So that's what we did. I would have preferred to go to Pecos Bill, but that was closed for refurbishment during our visit. So we ended up at Cosmic Ray's.

C was not feeling well and did not want to eat a lot. So she chose here comfort food, a chocolate cake:

DSC05145.jpg

I was set on getting a burger. I really love the fixing bars they have and wanted to make good use of them! So this is my cheeseburger after the fixing bar:

DSC05146.jpg

I liked it. I even liked the new bread they use. It wasn't gourmet food, but it was tasty and just what I wanted at that point.

We were seating outside on the terraces overlooking the castle and had this wonderful view:

DSC05148.jpg

omg- did you leave anything on the condiment bar? That burger looks awesome. Total bummer about the chemically orange swirl. I think a pineapple/vanilla swirl would be fantastic.

I am so hungry now LOL!! I just spent most of my Saturday here and there between errands and chores reading your reviews!! Just like I really enjoy your PTR I really have been enjoying your dining reviews and I'm looking forward to the rest of them and any you do about your upcoming trip!!

Great pictures and great reviews!!!

Lovin the reviews! I am curious how you found the weather in January? I am thinking of taking a trip then as it's my birthday month... but afraid it will be chilly?

Is there meat under all those toppings on your burger? ;) That's how I like it too though, loaded!!

The burger was really good for a fast food burger! :thumbsup2 And the pineapple/vanilla swirl is on my list of required food items for January!!! :lmao:

Thanks for the nice comment on my reviews (and the PTR!!)! :goodvibes I am hoping to get the rest done soon, I really should not drag this out until the next trip... :rolleyes1

I think my sister and I have a silent agreement about doing a TR and a dining review about our January trip! Should be fun!! :goodvibes

Sorry for taking so long to answer your January question!! January 2009 was rather cold. We were wearing long trousers and t-shirts during the day with fleeces at night, but it got warmer during our stay (shorts and t-shirt weather and I also enjoyed the pool!) and then the last day was rainy and cool.

In 2007 and 2008 we were there during late January and early February as well and had a lot of much warmer weather, in February we were at a water park and were happy that it wasn't much hotter.

So all in all: it varies, but be prepared, it might be chilly, but it might be hot, too... :confused3

Is there meat under all those toppings on your burger? ;) That's how I like it too though, loaded!!

I think I am starting to get a bit nervous about committing a cultural faupax now with my love for those condiment bars. It appears that my use of them might be frowned upon considering the comments here... :rolleyes1 Therefore I am glad that you admit to doing the same!! ;)

C started feeling better as the evening progressed and we felt that this was nearly our last chance to have a drink at the bar in our hotel. Something we had planned for ages, but never got round to do.

C got a Island Bahama Mama:

DSC05150.jpg

I had the Magical Star Cocktail with a colour changing glow cube:

DSC05153.jpg

We both really liked our drinks (I think I might have found a favourite on the standard bar menu) and the bar tender war really nice, too. I am really glad that we got our time there. We were very tempted to return the next evening which was our last, but were just too tired.

I once again went to get us some breakfast at Captain Cooks to eat on our patio. C ordered a waffle, so I got her a Mickey waffle with a side of bacon and strawberry sauce. It was very good. I wanted to try something new and got a kids meal with french toast sticks for myself. They were not good at all. They were rather tasteless and chewy and already ice cold by the time they had traveled the few yards to our room. But perhaps I just don't like french toast...
