It All Started with a Massive Price Glitch - Aulani Nov. 2014 PTR ~ Updated 12/6 - TR

One reason I love traveling to Disney, is because I know how to plan for it. I wouldn't have any idea where to begin planning a Hawaii trip!

Very cool that Izzy is watched by a Disney enthusiast :thumbsup2

Look at all these plans! I forgot that you're going to be there for 10 days :cool1:

Hopefully that overnight flight back home won't be too bad.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this trip turns out. We'd like to get to Aulani for our 10 year (hopefully!) and not sure if it will be with or without DS. But at least i'll get ideas from your TR, along with Mark's and Cynthia's.

My husband and I can't believe the deal you got! We are so jealous! We were at Aulani this past May with our 3 1/2 year old son. We had a great time, but when I got home, I said I would never bring a three year old to Hawaii again! Life with a toddler is a lot less planning and more just wait and see. And our son is a super laid back kid, but there were several times when we didn't do what we wanted, or what we thought we were going to do, just because it wasn't working out like we had "Planned". So just remember to keep your plans very flexible. We spent a lot more time at the resort sitting by the pool then we had initially thought, just because it was so nice and relaxing, and everyone was enjoying it. We also ate a lot more at the resort, because it was easier than leaving. I wrote a detailed trip report on my blog, link is in my signature. If you have any questions from a been there done that took a toddler to hawaii Mom, just let me know.
Good luck with the planning, and I can't wait to read your trip report when you get back.

Your plans seriously sound awesome!! I wish we could tag along in your suitcase. I think your first class seats might fit us all as well? Ugh so awesome to have a relaxing and fun vacation to look forward to.
It's very fun to look forward to! (Of course, it's not like you have nothing coming up, travel-wise! :rotfl:) Well, let's see, maybe you could be "Izzy" on the plane and Izzy and Aria could impersonate "lap babies" :stir:...and I think Andrew would be pretty much out of luck, unless he can fit in luggage. :lmao:

wow - so much planning and seems like you have a lot of fun things scheduled but also being reasonable with what can be accomplished with a toddler - plus, you are in Hawaii at an amazing resort - so erring on more downtime is probably fine
The planning is really tough compared to WDW - trying to figure out new terrain and also walk that fine line of seeing the island vs. enjoying the resort. It's easier to navigate that staying at Pop and not having a car. :rotfl2: I have a hard time leaving time open for "down time". Who knows when I'll be back, so I feel like I have to SEE.ALL.THE.THINGS and EAT.ALL.THE.FOOD, etc.

That's very cool you found the pony rides that take a toddler ... and given all they do and that it is a real 1/2 hour ride (plus, my insurance hat on here - the liability is probably pretty high) $39 really doesn't seem bad
True, probably lots of insurance at that place. :rotfl: The tough part is that I don't know how to determine if Izzy will enjoy it in advance and you have to reserve in advance. Maybe I can see how she likes the horses at Kualoa and reserve then, even though it's only one day in advance? I don't know... She did say "horsey" today when she saw a picture (on a Toy Story backpack), so maybe that's a sign. :rolleyes1

aw, Izzy's first booze cruise ;)
I know, can you believe she hasn't been on one yet?! :lmao: I actually found this place doing searches for good catamaran rides for young kids, so there is that... I am going to check out other options still, though (particularly the one suggested below).

Looks like a great trip! And I'm flattered you're stealing our itinerary. Just a quick update--it appears a new Kua 'Aina sandwich shop has opened in Kapolei, which is much closer to Aulani. Or so I've been told.:thumbsup2
Whew, the stealing has been approved!! Maybe I should just rip off your whole trip - my planning would be a lot easier! :rotfl2: Though I don't want to even think about bringing 2.5 extra kids along! ;)

I actually noticed that when I looked up the Kua 'Aina location on their website and was confused - thinking, "Hey, that seems like it's near Aulani!?" :confused3 I may re-plan this part of the day...

There will be a toaster in the studio cupboard. If it's not there, call housekeeping and they will bring you one. Freezer section of frig was big enough to hold a couple bottles of water and a box of Jimmy Dean Dlites breakfast sandwiches.
Just the stuff I needed to know, thanks! :goodvibes I'm going to have to make up a shopping list once I've got the meal plan squared away!

Waimea Falls is inside the botanical garden, hence the entrance fee. Leptospirosis is the name of the bacteria they warn about.
Hmmm, I may scrap this idea, since we really only want to see (not swim in) waterfalls and I think there are probably other options. I don't think I put it in the schedule yet, either, so I'm open to other scenic suggestions!

The sunset cruise we took with Hawaii Nautical did not involve snorkeling. They have a free shuttle from Aulani, so no worries about drinking and driving.
Thanks for the info - I had looked at their site, but missed the sunset cruise option before. It's still more expensive, but seems like a very family-friendly operation and they do provide food, so that's something. How was the boat for a 2-year-old? Were there places to sit and not be near the edge, etc? I'm a little worried if she gets squirmy or tries to run off.

Sushi Bay in Kapolei is conveyor belt sushi, it's in the Safeway Plaza. I believe there is another in the target plaza as well as the sandwich shop. Aloha salads is awesome, we got takeout twice.
Okay, great to know!

Ted's bakery had some great muffins that would be great to bring back for breakfast the next day.
Oh, good idea! :thumbsup2

You can request the utensils for the grill at the community center. We did buy fresh chicken breasts from Target to grill.
Cool, I'm sure we can find something yummy! And even the "fancy" stuff would be cheaper than eating out, so maybe I'll splurge a bit.

There's tons of options! Nico's Pier 38 in Honolulu and Duke's in Waikiki were both very good lunch options, wish we had made it early enough for the breakfast buffet at Duke's-supposed to be great!
Thanks for all the ideas!

Your itinerary sounds great!
Great, thanks! Hopefully I'm on the right track and can just improve it a bit from here!

*Highly recommend the malasadas from Leonard's. They are very filling so we bought a large box and were able to eat them for breakfast for a few mornings.
Oh, that is good to know that they were good on other days, as I wasn't sure about that. Did you warm them up or refrigerate them or leave them out? I'm sure we'll want to try some fresh ones, but won't be up for eating a whole box upon arrival. Leftovers are good!

*I do believe you can cancel ADRs at any time. When we were there last September, it was so empty that every time I went to make an ADR somewhere, the CMs were telling us it wasn't necessary. Always nice to have though as a Disney planner. :thumbsup2
Yeah, I figure it can't hurt to have them, since I have read reports of people having trouble with walk-ups and last-minute ones. I like the cancel anytime policy, though! :thumbsup2

*I like your idea of the swap when you go to Pearl Harbor. It really isn't toddler friendly but in my opinion, a place where everyone should visit when on Oahu. Just remember, absolutely no bags allowed. So many people were sent back to their cars to drop off their bags, including purses. Because of this, they have a high crime rate of car break-ins even though there are security/police patrolling.
That's part of the benefit of splitting up - the swap meet person can have all of our stuff in the stroller and the Pearl Harbor person can just have whatever they need in a pocket. Much easier than worrying about break-ins!

*We had dinner at Ama Ama once on our anniversary evening, watching the sunset which was nice. Very expensive, but nice. Make sure you request a table near the edge, since there are no windows, all open air. Gorgeous view. We also had breakfast there twice because the stuffed french toast was divine and kept DH & I full for most of the day! :thumbsup2
Great advice. And I had wondered if that French Toast was good, as the description sounds yummy. Okay, I just went and reserved Ama Ama for 9am on our totally free day (11/14). Yay!

*The Menehune Trail game was fun, very Kim Possible. They give you an iTouch so its a bit difficult to see in the direct sunlight but a nice fun distraction.
That sounds like our kind of thing! We (especially Dug) enjoyed Kim Possible. I think Izzy might get a kick out of it too.

*If you want to make sure Dug gets a chair at the Starlit Hui, I recommend lining up about 20 minutes prior. There are a limited amount of chairs and you can just request to sit in it when you walk into the grass area. CM will escort you to the seat.
Great, thank you! We will try to do that for sure!

*We went to the Dole Plantation but only to eat a Dole Whip :rotfl:. We did buy some t-shirts but nothing else was appealing to us. Does sound like Izzy would love to ride the train though!
Mmmmmm, Dole Whip!

*Be prepared for long lines at Matsumoto's. They do a very good job at being organized though and have it down to a science with taking orders with one person and waiting for your number to be called. We were too chicken to get the beans on top (ew!) but the shave ice is so much cheaper and you get a much larger portion here than at Aulani. Plus its a landmark!
Maybe we will have to each get one and share - one with beans and one without, maybe? It seems weird to me, but I know some people swear it's amazing, so I feel like I should at least try it.

*We made it to Monkeypod one evening for happy hour. Nice walk down the street from Aulani. Also expensive but happy hour was reasonable for apps & drinks. Wonderful atmosphere even though its on a busy road. We never had to make ADRs.
Good to know. I think I might try to make reservations, but not until we get there. Just in case - I'd rather not keep a hungry toddler waiting. :rotfl: The happy hour menu seems decent in selection and price.

*Waimea Falls Park is a historical botanical garden so there is an entrance fee, FYI.
Do you think it's worth seeing if we don't care to swim under the waterfall? :confused3

*DH & I did the 2 hr horseback riding tour of Kualoa Ranch. It was AMAZING! Obviously Izzy won't be able to do it but there is so much to see on the ranch that even if you don't book anything, in my opinion, its worth a trip there just to visit. Such gorgeous grounds and you can walk around and see the horses. Wonderful staff there as well. :thumbsup2:thumbsup2
The horseback ride sounds really fun! Hoping the movie tour gives us some nice views too and we can take in all the beauty of the place during our visit.

*If you are looking to try the Loco Moco, I've heard that Rainbow Drive-In has the best.
Good to know. I'm not sure if I want it, but I figured the breakfast buffet is a good way to try one version of it and see if I want any more after that.

*When heading to Diamond Head in the morning, remember traffic. Traffic heading into Honolulu is insane but it moves. Unlike traffic here in MA, its bearable. Cars move, no one, I mean NO ONE beeps their horn and everyone is so laid back and friendly! If someone wants to change lanes they use their directional and then say thank you. Its awesome! :goodvibes:rotfl2:
That's a good point, since it won't be on a weekend. I am hoping to leave really early, though I need to figure out what time "really early" is. Sounds like similar traffic to what we have here in MN, but even nicer than our "Minnesota nice" (passive aggressive). :rotfl:

*We ate lunch at Uncle Bobo's BBQ one day. What a great hole-in-the-wall place! The pulled pork sandwich was delicious! Highly recommend if you have a chance to stop.
Sounds right up our alley! I asked Dug if he was interested in a BBQ place and he was very excited!

*The lounge inside Aulani to use after check-out is fantastic. Showers, lockers and even a spin-dry machine to dry your bathing suit prior to storing it in your luggage. There is a computer there as well to use and a TV displaying flight times out of Honolulu airport. They did a great job with it.
Sounds really good! I read something indicating there were weird policies about coming in and out just once and it was difficult to manage - did you have any issues?

*We did a lot of driving around the island to explore. We are huge LOST fans so I made a doc of all the places they shot at. Let me know if you'd like me to share this with you.
Yes, that would be fantastic!! Not sure how much we'll get to, but we did watch the entire LOST series (most of it all at once on Netflix, right before the final season). I know Dug would enjoy seeing some of those sights, if possible. I'm actually really excited about just driving around. I love to drive through scenic places!

*We went snorkeling at Hanauma Bay one day which was a lot of fun. There is an entrance fee pp here but I believe it was only like $5 and the money goes towards maintaining the area.
It does sound really nice. I'll have to check with Dug again to gauge his interest in snorkeling. For whatever reason, I'm just not that enthused, but I've only snorkeled once before (on a cruise excursion) and I got some nasty coral scratches, so I'm sure that's coloring my opinion.

*Other place to check out is Pali Lookout. Gorgeous view from up there.
Great, thanks! Would you work that in on the Punchbowl, etc. day?

*Make sure you just enjoy down time at the resort. Its such an amazing place to walk around and take in all the details. I bet Izzy would have fun finding all the Menehune hiding around! There is also a nice path behind the resort that you can walk up and down the coast. Very nice to talk at your leisure in the evening when its cooler.
Sounds so nice! :cloud9:

I hope that isn't too much information. I know how overwhelming it was when I was doing the planning so anything I can do to help others I'll try! :beach:
Not too much at all! Thank you, thank you, thank you! :worship: I feel like I need all the help I can get on this one! :goodvibes

One reason I love traveling to Disney, is because I know how to plan for it. I wouldn't have any idea where to begin planning a Hawaii trip!
You hit the nail on the head there! That is exactly how I feel!

Very cool that Izzy is watched by a Disney enthusiast :thumbsup2
We're very lucky! Our daycare provider is often wearing Mickey socks and such! We didn't know when we interviewed her, but saw a Disney trip collage on our way out that tipped us off. Didn't realize how into it she was until later, though.

Look at all these plans! I forgot that you're going to be there for 10 days :cool1:
I know, this is the longest trip we've had in a very long time! But I think that's good, as everyone says you need at least that long in Hawaii, after flying so far.

Hopefully that overnight flight back home won't be too bad.
I hope so too. Funny thing - believe it or not, I did not even realize it was a red-eye until like the day after I booked it! :rotfl: It was such a frantic buy-these-ASAP time that it didn't even register with me that the return date was the next day. But I think they pretty much all are overnight flights, so I don't know that I would have changed anything.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this trip turns out. We'd like to get to Aulani for our 10 year (hopefully!) and not sure if it will be with or without DS. But at least i'll get ideas from your TR, along with Mark's and Cynthia's.
When is your 10-year? I'm sure it would be a good trip to celebrate! We are going about a month after our 9-year, so I figure this is kind-of an anniversary trip. I love gathering ideas from other TRs!

My husband and I can't believe the deal you got! We are so jealous! We were at Aulani this past May with our 3 1/2 year old son. We had a great time, but when I got home, I said I would never bring a three year old to Hawaii again! Life with a toddler is a lot less planning and more just wait and see. Good luck with the planning, and I can't wait to read your trip report when you get back.
:welcome: Yeah, that deal was just ridiculous!

In a world without a massive airline price glitch, we wouldn't bring a toddler to Hawaii either. We would have gone when she was older, probably. But, I can't imagine leaving her home for that long, so we'll just have to stay flexible, as you said. Luckily, we've had some chances to practice with a lot of travel this past year (WDW x 3, NYC, Portland), so that gives us some idea of what to expect and what kind of traveller she is (pretty good!) But I know that our plans will deviate - they always do. This last trip to WDW we ended up doing a ton of unplanned character meets, since she suddenly decided she loved them. (I'm sure that will happen at Aulani too - must meet Minnie every day! :rotfl:)

I just peeked at your blog and realized that I ran across it somehow earlier in my planning and read/skimmed it then. However, I am going to revisit it soon and read it again, knowing more about what we're planning at this point. I appreciate the help of someone who has been there and done that! :goodvibes

Coming out of lurking, the deal you have for HI is fantastic! We waited 35 years after our wedding to afford Hawaii! Our trip was 2 weeks, 3 islands, long flight delays, and overall wonderful. We were there the last two weeks of Feb 2014. Did not stay at Aulani, I am the only one of the 6 who would have loved to stay there, but we did get over there for a few hours after touring Pearl Harbor. (we stayed in Waikiki beach, crowded but easy to get around). While at Aulani we had drinks at the bar near the pool/beach, Off the Hook. When the Olelo bar opened at 5 we went there for Happy Hour. Good drink prices and appetizers, there are tables there too, we saw a lot of families, it looked like many were waiting for the bar to open for the great prices. I had my favorite drink of the trip, an Alaea-rita, so good! The decor is cool, I'm sure you can check out the pictures. There are wood carvings, kinda like a giant shadow box, with the Hawaiian names of everything.

We really only had two full days on Oahu, due to the flight delays. Our first day was a hike up Diamond Head, quick lunch, Pearl Harbor, (a stop at the Target to pick up a new curling iron for me, mine started on fire at the hotel.:rolleyes1) Aulani, then dinner at Dukes. 2nd day we drove around the Island, stopped at Hanauma Bay, Halona blowhole, a macadamia nut factory, park by chinaman's hat, Giovanni's shrimp truck, a north shore beach, Dole plantation, then back to Waikiki. We had a Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville in our hotel, so dinner was there. It rained the entire time we were in Oahu, saw some sun on our way to the airport on our last morning.

I think you should really enjoy your time at Aulani, it is so beautiful, and I think that relaxing at the resort may be so much less stressful than trying to tour too much. Don't forget to go to the ABC store, its kinda interesting. Longs drugs had the best prices on Macadamia nuts in case you want to bring some home for family and friends. Mauna Loa were my favorites, the butter candy ones are only sold in HI. We spent a fair amount of time at the beach when we were on Maui. It was wonderful to swim with the turtles and watch for the whales. I really hope I can get back some day.

FYI, we are planning our Aulani trip right now. Booked it this weekend and leaving in 32 days, talk about impulsive.

Anyway, I was looking into the Costco thing and decided to sign up because of this great deal on Living Social. For $55, you get a membership, $20 GC, 30-pack toilet paper, a rotisserie chicken, and an apple pie.

Pretty good deal plus we will save on gas and groceries while in Aulani. Costco is also a great place to buy super cheap allergy meds which 3 of us take, so seemed like a no-brainer for me.

Thanks for posting all of this about your trip. It is really helping me plan mine which I don't have much time to do!

Oh, that is good to know that they were good on other days, as I wasn't sure about that. Did you warm them up or refrigerate them or leave them out? I'm sure we'll want to try some fresh ones, but won't be up for eating a whole box upon arrival. Leftovers are good!
We just left them out but I bet they'd be delicious if you nuked them in the microwave for a minute or so! :thumbsup2

Great advice. And I had wondered if that French Toast was good, as the description sounds yummy. Okay, I just went and reserved Ama Ama for 9am on our totally free day (11/14). Yay!
:woohoo:

Its cheap enough to try out even if you just got a small one with the beans. Go for it! :thumbsup2

Do you think it's worth seeing if we don't care to swim under the waterfall? :confused3
We didn't pay the fee so we never went in. Unfortunately I can't comment on whether or not its worth it. Sorry.

Its a quick pit stop so any time you are in that area or have time to spare you can easily fit it in.

Coming out of lurking, the deal you have for HI is fantastic! We waited 35 years after our wedding to afford Hawaii!
:welcome: Thanks for coming out of lurkdom! If it hadn't been for that price glitch, HI would probably be really far out on our horizon too. Not the most affordable of trips, under ordinary circumstances.

Glad you had a great time! Sounds like a wonderful trip. Too bad you didn't get to stay at Aulani, but that's nice you got to visit! I'll have to remember that drink recommendation.

We really only had two full days on Oahu, due to the flight delays. You really got a lot done in a short time! That is impressive! Too bad it rained so much, though.

I definitely plan to spend some time enjoying the resort. Good tip on the macadamia nuts. I think those are the kind that Dug's sister brought back for us from their Hawaii trip - they were delicious! :thumbsup2

FYI, we are planning our Aulani trip right now. Booked it this weekend and leaving in 32 days, talk about impulsive.
Wow, you are indeed impulsive! Very cool! :goodvibes

Thank you for all that info! That is a great deal! I may do that, as it more-or-less pays for itself. And we do have Costcos around here, just not anywhere I go by regularly. But about 20 minutes away. When we lived near one, I had a membership, as the gas savings paid for it. Interesting on the allergy meds - Dug takes them, so that may be a good savings too.

Thanks for posting all of this about your trip. It is really helping me plan mine which I don't have much time to do!
You're welcome. You don't have much time at all! I've had nearly a year and really slacked off until recently, though. :rotfl:

We just left them out but I bet they'd be delicious if you nuked them in the microwave for a minute or so! :thumbsup2
Great, I think we will get a bunch and try to stretch them out for a couple mornings!

:woohoo:

Its cheap enough to try out even if you just got a small one with the beans. Go for it! :thumbsup2
True. It seems weird, but I know that some love it and it's a unique thing, so I'd like to try it.

We didn't pay the fee so we never went in. Unfortunately I can't comment on whether or not its worth it. Sorry.
No problem.

You need to plan at least an hour in traffic. I believe that is what it took for us to get to Aulani to Pearl Harbor and Honolulu is a bit farther.
Thanks!

We didn't use it but walked around to see what was in there. There weren't ever any CM around. I've never heard of anyone having issues like that? :confused3
I think it might be a recent change. Saw something on this DIS about it not too long ago.

I've PMed you!
Thank you so much! Got it and Dug and I are excited to read through everything!

Its a quick pit stop so any time you are in that area or have time to spare you can easily fit it in.
Sounds great!

Well, some luck we have. :sad2: We had the good luck that got us this trip in the first place. Great timing – looked at airfares at just the right moment. pixiedust: Now we have the lousy timing that has made me re-plan our entire trip less than two months out. Don’t get me wrong, the reason behind the change is an overall good one, but also a huge bummer and a very unfortunate timing coincidence. This pre-trip report needed more drama, I guess.

So, what am I talking about? :confused3

Dug got a new job. :cool1: At his top choice company that he never thought he’d get an offer from. And he will be working from home, so his 3 hours/day in the car will soon be history. He will have a lot more time with Izzy and a lot less stress. My life will be easier, since he can do daycare pick-up, meaning I won’t have to keep getting up at crazy-early in the morning to work a full day before my hour commute back to daycare. I can get relatively normal sleep and work relatively normal hours, like I did pre-kid. Our lifestyle (all of us) will be a lot healthier with these changes. He gets a small raise (no, not enough for WDW AP’s all the time), but there are opportunities for promotions and advancement, which he didn’t have before. So, this is all good stuff and a real no-brainer. :thumbsup2 Except for that darn timing thing. :rolleyes1

Since everyone in this company works remotely, they have an annual retreat each year. It is a week for everyone to spend time together face-to-face. It’s crucial for them and understandable that everyone needs to be there. It’s in Palm Springs, CA this year (changes yearly). And Dug will have to be there. Guess when it is? Yeah, right smack in the middle of our once-in-a-lifetime, not-possible-to-reschedule trip to Hawaii. :teacher:

When Dug told them about our trip (before accepting the offer), they almost rescinded their offer, since they didn’t want to ask him to give up Hawaii, but considered the retreat mandatory (and Dug’s offer to Skype in was not enough). Dug and I brainstormed and decided the best option would be to see if they were willing to fly him in from Oahu instead of Minnesota. And they said yes. ::yes:: I am on pins and needles waiting for flights to be confirmed, though – hoping they will maximize the amount of time he has with us in Hawaii while still getting him to/from the retreat in a timely manner.

So, I’ve revised our schedule with the assumption that he will leave on Sunday afternoon (the 9th) and return on Friday afternoon (the 14th). That means that we have basically two weekends together and Izzy and I are on our own for the week in between (well, unless any DIS-friends want to come hang out with us ;)). Not ideal, but better than nothing, I guess. I have been trying to move anything I can to the time where he will be with us, which means we will have some heavy-touring days. The things he doesn’t need to do with us (i.e. Target run, etc.), I’m leaving for after he flies out. Izzy and I will likely have a lot of resort time to relax during the week.

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t upset about this. :sad1: I actually felt much more of a loss than I anticipated when he accepted the offer, knowing he’d miss over half of our trip. But it is what it is and we’ll make the most of it. I guess it’s good that I’ve done the two WDW trips with just me and Izzy – not too concerned about it just being us while he’s away. Though it does make it more difficult to do certain things (i.e. – no waterslides). I’m sure we’ll do a ton of character meets, though. ::MinnieMo

So, I’ve got the revised agenda here. Please let me know if you’d make any adjustments. I know that the touring days are loaded, but not positive if I’ve arranged everything ideally, given the major changes I’ve made. Here goes:

Friday, November 7th

Land in Hawaii at 6:35pm and pick up rental car. Stop for Leonard’s Malasadas (truck) on way to Aulani. Check in, put Izzy to bed in the stroller (in jammies), then walk around together to explore the resort. Most of the pool area closes at 8pm, but the hot tubs are open until 10pm, so possibly switch off using them before bed, if we have time. Maybe have Izzy continue to sleep in stroller in the room, or possibly transfer her to the pack ‘n’ play, if we’re feeling bold.

Saturday, November 8th

Get up early and enjoy a 7am character breakfast buffet at Makahiki. Minnie! :yay: Then head out to the North Shore for a “movie tour” at Kualoa Ranch, probably mid-morning (need to reserve this still). After the tour and a quick look around, head to lunch a few minutes away at Uncle Bobo’s BBQ. After lunch, head a bit further along the shore to the Polynesian Cultural Center. Arrive shortly after opening at noon, then tour the place while Izzy naps in her stroller. After spending the afternoon exploring the place, head back towards Aulani. If it’s before the 5pm closing time for the Dole Plantation, stop for a snack and a train ride. Eat dinner at Kua Aina Sandwiches near Aulani, then back to the resort to get Izzy to bed and switch off trying the slides and the lazy river before they close at 8pm. Could also switch off at hot tubs or main pool until 10pm.

Sunday, November 9th

Start the day with leftover malasadas. Get on the road around 6:30am to get to Pearl Harbor. One of us does the 8:15am tour and the other does 10am. We will switch off doing this and going over to the Aloha Stadium Swap Meet. I’m a little concerned because we’ll have to bring Dug’s luggage with us this morning and I know you shouldn't leave anything in the car. Not sure if a suitcase in the trunk would be okay or if we’ll need to have one of us wheeling it around the Swap Meet. Or if we have any other options? :confused3 I don’t think we’ll have time to go back to Aulani between Pearl Harbor and the airport drop-off. Depending on what time Dug needs to be at the airport, we’ll grab some lunch in the area. I threw the Rainbow Drive-in into the schedule here. Then we’ll drop Dug at the airport to head to CA.

For the second part of our day, Izzy will get her nap in the car on the drive back. If she’s awake and interested, she and I will do the Hawaiian Railway train ride at 3pm, over near Aulani. We’ll keep the plans minimal for the rest of the day. Probably have dinner at the quick service Ulu Café. Maybe try out the Kim Possible-style Menehune Trail scavenger hunt a bit. Then get Izzy to bed. And I’ll either find something to do in the room (or balcony) or go to bed early too.

Monday, November 10th

Breakfast at the resort – I’m thinking maybe grabbing a quick breakfast sandwich from the Olelo Room. Then off to Aunty’s Beach House for their Open House time, where toddlers are welcome with their parents. After that, we’ll make our Target (and maybe Costco) run. Stop and have lunch at Aloha Salads nearby. We’ll get back to the room and unload the groceries and get Izzy down for her nap. I’ll probably hang out on the balcony or something. After nap, we’ll explore the pool and play areas. Should be fun! Planning to have an early dinner at the Monkeypod happy hour. The Starlit Hui will probably be on this night, so we’ll watch that before heading to bed.

Tuesday, November 11th

Have breakfast in the room (stuff from Target). Same with lunch. Not sure what to do in between. Probably pool and/or other resort activities. Character meets, I'm sure. Izzy will nap in the room. Dinner is undetermined. I don’t really want to grill without Dug there to help, so not sure what we’ll do. If we are up for it, I think there is a movie on the beach this evening. Then bedtime.

Wednesday, November 12th

I booked a 9am breakfast at Ama Ama. I wanted to do it when Dug was there, but I couldn’t work it in. And I want to try that yummy French toast. I’m a bit up in the air on the catamaran ride now. I couldn’t find any way to fit it in while Dug is with us. I’d prefer to have him there to tag team with for Izzy. But I may go it alone. So, for now, I have the 11:30am Na Hoku catamaran out of Waikiki. I’ll bring some sandwiches or something with us to eat beforehand. There is a chance of maybe doing the Hawaii Nautical sunset cruise the previous night instead of this. I haven’t really decided. It would cost a considerable amount more, but may be a better option for us. If we do this midday catamaran ride, I’ll plan to have Izzy nap in the car afterwards while I tour some of the sights (without leaving the car). I noted Ala Moana Beach, Punchbowl, and Pali Lookout. I need to check into all these things some more. I don’t really know my sightseeing very well yet. I don’t have any dinner plans yet for this day either. Maybe we will check out the storytelling by Uncle at the firepit on this night.

Thursday, November 13th

Breakfast in the room again. Go up to Gunstock Ranch this morning for Izzy’s horseback ride. Back to Aulani for lunch and nap in the room. Afternoon is unscheduled. I am actually interested in doing some hiking, but I really don’t know if there are any good ones to do with just me and Izzy. I could wear her in the Ergo, as long as it’s not too long of a hike. If I were on my own, I’d do a lot of hiking and exploring, I think. Suggestions are welcome. Thinking we may go back to Monkeypod for the happy hour dinner again. Starlit Hui is happening again this night, most likely, so maybe we’ll go again if Izzy liked it. Then bed.

Friday, November 14th

Again, totally unscheduled. Breakfast, lunch, and nap in room. I anticipate picking Dug up at the airport mid-afternoon. Depending on what time it is, I’d like to squeeze in a bit of sightseeing in the Waikiki area. Any suggestions? Again, I need to look into this stuff a lot more. I scheduled a dinner (buffet) at Makahiki this night for 6:30pm. Then we will get Izzy to bed and switch off using the pool/hot tubs.

Saturday, November 15th

North Shore Day. Breakfast at Ted’s Bakery, check out Sunset Beach and any other sights. Get some fresh fruit from the street vendors. Stop and check out the Turtle Bay Resort and have lunch at their beachside restaurant Ola. Izzy will nap in the car this day. We’ll enjoy the drive and see the sights (again, I need to figure out details). Stop at Matsumoto’s for some shave ice. Stop at Hula Dog for a yummy, unique dinner. Get back to the resort early enough to get Izzy to bed and switch off using the waterslides and lazy river. Bedtime.

Sunday, November 16th

Dug and Izzy sleep in or hang out at the resort. I get up early and go hike Diamond Head. Grab some blueberry scones from the market afterwards. Bring those back to eat for breakfast, along with leftover fruit from the day before. Maybe do the Menehune Trail together for a bit this morning. Check out of Aulani. We have a very late breakfast (aiming for some breakfast and some lunch) at Makahiki. 11am is the last character breakfast slot, so that’s what we have. Izzy will probably need to nap in her stroller this day, unless we can get a late check-out to allow her to nap in the room. Not counting on that, though. During nap, we’ll trade off doing the pool/slides/lazy river. When she wakes, we can have some Dole Whips and some family pool/splash pad time. After we’re done, we’ll use the late departure lounge to get cleaned up. We have our 5pm sunset dinner at Ama Ama on this night now. Good way to end our stay, I hope. Afterwards, we’ll leave for the airport and aim to be there by 8pm. Fly home at 10:12pm and arrive home midday the next day.

So, that’s what I’ve got. Whatcha think?

Oh I'm so sorry!! And yay for a dream job and life becoming easier!! But I'm so sorry it messed with your trip. I'd be devastated and probably cry. And then feel guilty for being sad. But you can't help it. So feel free to grief the trip you planned.

However your new plans seem good to me. If it were me, I'd have to plan a lot to keep me and Caden busy and out of the room while Andrew was gone. I don't do well like that at home and I'm positive I would be upset if alone on vacation!! (Unless it was Disney world and we could ride rides all day! Lol)

Anyway, *hugs* you'll still have a wonderful time, and once you finish grieving I think you'll still be excited.

When is your 10-year? I'm sure it would be a good trip to celebrate! We are going about a month after our 9-year, so I figure this is kind-of an anniversary trip. I love gathering ideas from other TRs!

July 21, 2016 so less than 2 years away but something we should probably start planning for if we're serious about going.

Aw man. I totally understand your frustration. I would have been extremely bummed out too! So they're keeping him there for 5 days? That seems like a really long time.

On the other hand, once you get back from vacation, life will hopefully be a little easier on you all :)

first off, big congratulations to Dug on the new job! :thumbsup2

jvrn_22f_udpu1.jpg

I am sure that the reduced commute will have a huge impact on the quality of life for all of you!

Definitely a huge bummer that he will have to miss a lot of the trip - on the plus side, at least you aren't paying full price to fly out there and then he is missing a lot of it.

Very glad that it looks like you should still be able to get to Pearl Harbor since I know that was a big one to you and Dug.

As an added "blessing in disguise" this will almost force you to have to enjoy the resort more ... I mean, if the worst case scenario is getting to hang out and enjoy Aulani that not too shabby ;)

I think your plans sound pretty good. I am sure the few touring days will feel like a bit much and you all will be very tired on the flight home, but I think it is worth it and you seem pretty sensible about everything. Just remember how much you got accomplished during your few days in NYC!

Congrats to Dug on the new job! In the long run, it will all be worth it to have him closer and the potential to move up in the company.

I agree with Rebo, you'll have more time to take in Aulani even if you don't get to see as much of Oahu that you wanted. Its an amazing place, I don't think you'd be disappointed. :thumbsup2

I think your new itinerary is fine. I hope you don't overload yourself without Dug around.

For Dug's luggage in the trunk at Pearl Harbor, I think you'll be fine. As long as its in the trunk and not in like the backseat where people can see it, it should be fine.

Congrats to Dug on the new job and to your whole family for what it will mean to your lifestyle!
One thing I might mention is on Monday Nov 10th you have planned to grab a breakfast sandwich from the Oleo room. I know this is a little thing but i just wanted to mention how much we enjoyed the breakfast platters from Ulu cafe. They were VERY generous portions and priced well, certainly enough for two lighter eaters or one hearty eater. Maybe check Ulu out before you decide because I felt they had a lot to offer and really enjoyed just about everything we ate there. Just a suggestion...

I'm waaayyy behind on this PTR. I did read your latest update though, and although it might not seem ideal right now, this is great news! Congrats to Dug! I'm sure you will still have a great time at Aulani, even though it's not what you planned. Okay, off to catch up on the rest now!

congrats on the new job! Hawaii is expensive, 15 years ago using all freq flyer miles the 5 of us still spent $8000 on 12 nights/ 3 islands!!! and that included all the rental car/hotel certificates that united passed out back in the day!!! enjoy your bargain trip!! you appear to have planned well for a dream vacation(not the Disney Dream!!)

Thank you. :goodvibes This actually makes me feel much better - just knowing that I'm not wrong for feeling upset about things. One more week until life becomes easier! :cool1: (He starts next Tuesday).

Lol)
I had that same thought about wishing we could go on rides all day - having been on my own at WDW with Izzy, I feel comfortable with that. However, I think we will be plenty busy and won't spend much time (other than sleep and meals) in the room. There is so much to do at the resort, but it's kind-of like a cruise where you get the itinerary each day and can't plan ahead that well for a lot of the activities. I'm sure we'll take advantage of lots of things, though. And I am looking at some possible outing ideas for us too.

Anyway, *hugs* you'll still have a wonderful time, and once you finish grieving I think you'll still be excited.
Yes, you're right. I took a while responding to these comments, but read them earlier. I was still grieving then, but I am feeling more excited now. Still not ideal, but I am getting used to the new reality.

July 21, 2016 so less than 2 years away but something we should probably start planning for if we're serious about going.
Yeah, time to get cracking on those plans! :thumbsup2 We got married less than a year before you (next year is our 10th). I'm sure it would be an amazing anniversary trip! :cloud9:

Aw man. I totally understand your frustration. I would have been extremely bummed out too! So they're keeping him there for 5 days? That seems like a really long time.
It's such a disappointing trade-off. I mean, we think it's the right decision, but it's a decision we sure never imagined facing. The travel is still not booked for the conference, but our understanding is that Sunday and Friday are the travel days and he will need to be there Monday-Thursday, probably the full days. So, we're hoping he can fly out Sunday afternoon and back on Friday morning. Hey, since you're in the area, can you advise on this? We think the best option is having him fly into/out of San Diego, then driving a rental car to/from Palm Springs. The other option was LAX, but it seems like that drive would be a lot worse traffic. Does that make sense or is there anything else we should consider? :confused3

On the other hand, once you get back from vacation, life will hopefully be a little easier on you all :)
Hopefully before vacation, since he starts in a week. I guess that is a good thing about the timing - he will have some time to work and make sure he's happy before the trip. If, for some reason, things weren't working out, at least he will know before Hawaii and could still stay the whole time with us. Not that I'm hoping for that, obviously, but it helps that he does have several weeks on the job before making this big sacrifice.

first off, big congratulations to Dug on the new job! :thumbsup2

Thanks, that is awesome! :thumbsup2 And, yes, I think this will have a huge positive impact on the quality of life for all of us. Very excited about that.

Definitely a huge bummer that he will have to miss a lot of the trip - on the plus side, at least you aren't paying full price to fly out there and then he is missing a lot of it.
True. But that's also part of the problem - because we paid so little, even though our tickets are fully refundable, there is no way to change them inexpensively. If they had been full price, we'd just have to pay a smallish fare difference (most likely), rather than almost the full ticket price we'd have to now. So, in theory, we might have been able to adjust our trip dates.

Very glad that it looks like you should still be able to get to Pearl Harbor since I know that was a big one to you and Dug.
Yes, I am glad that should be okay. As long as they don't fly him out until that afternoon. I'm still a little nervous about that, as I don't know what they'll end up doing.

As an added "blessing in disguise" this will almost force you to have to enjoy the resort more ... I mean, if the worst case scenario is getting to hang out and enjoy Aulani that not too shabby ;)
That is an EXCELLENT way to put it! :thumbsup2 I was worried about fitting in all the activities we wanted to do and now I don't think it will be an issue. We'll probably meet all the characters every day. :rotfl2: Should be fun.

I think your plans sound pretty good. I am sure the few touring days will feel like a bit much and you all will be very tired on the flight home, but I think it is worth it and you seem pretty sensible about everything. Just remember how much you got accomplished during your few days in NYC!
Hey, being tired for the flight home should be okay. We'll be flying overnight in First Class, so hoping it will be comfy to catch some zzzzz's. And that would be perfect if Izzy is wiped out for the flight. Thank you for the reminder about NYC. We did get a ton done there and it didn't feel too overwhelming, for the most part. We just have to let go of that "we're in Hawaii and relaxing on island time" mindset for the touring days.

Congrats to Dug on the new job! In the long run, it will all be worth it to have him closer and the potential to move up in the company.
Thank you! I really think it would be a no-brainer if not for the vacation conflict. And it still is, even with it. Just more of a tempered excitement. But I think it will be a really, really good thing for Dug and for our family.

I agree with Rebo, you'll have more time to take in Aulani even if you don't get to see as much of Oahu that you wanted. Its an amazing place, I don't think you'd be disappointed. :thumbsup2
Very true. I am excited to really take advantage of all that Aulani has to offer (well, all that it has to offer when you have a 2-year-old in tow). If I really need to do something toddler-less, I have the babysitting service in the back of my mind. Since she is too young for the free Aunty's Beach House, I'd have to pay a minimum of $120 (4 hour minimum). We'll see. Izzy's a pretty fun travel companion, though.

I think your new itinerary is fine. I hope you don't overload yourself without Dug around.
I think we'll be okay. :)

For Dug's luggage in the trunk at Pearl Harbor, I think you'll be fine. As long as its in the trunk and not in like the backseat where people can see it, it should be fine.
Okay, that helps a bunch. I really didn't know what else to do with it.

Congrats to Dug on the new job and to your whole family for what it will mean to your lifestyle!

Thank you! :goodvibes You know, I was thinking about both places and just put down the Olelo because I like breakfast sandwiches, but I am not at all opposed to the Ulu Cafe. I will see what we're in the mood for that day. And we might do both, if we ditch any of our planned in-room breakfasts, we'll see.

I'm waaayyy behind on this PTR. I did read your latest update though, and although it might not seem ideal right now, this is great news! Congrats to Dug! I'm sure you will still have a great time at Aulani, even though it's not what you planned. Okay, off to catch up on the rest now!
Thank you! It is great news in every other way. And I'm sure we'll still have a great time. Just have to be ready for something different than what we have been planning and dreaming of for the last 9 months. Welcome back from your trip, by the way!

congrats on the new job!
Thank you! Yes, Hawaii is so expensive. That's what's keeping us on Oahu for this trip - it adds so much to travel around and see the other islands. We'd love to do that someday, though. Who knows when, but someday. It's funny, because people sometimes say WDW is an "expensive" vacation, but it's got nothing on Hawaii! :sad2: I'm sure we will have a great time!

Wow, I don't know whether I should be thrilled or disappointed for your husband. I guess it's a short-term disappointment. I mean, how many chances do you get to go to Hawaii? It stinks that he'll miss out on part of it. But long-term, it sounds like a dream job, so I'm thrilled for him that way. I hope it all works out for the best.

Thanks, that's pretty much how we're feeling. He did just get his welcome packet today, though, and that helps - everything looks really good and we're really excited about the job and opportunities and flexibility and all. But, yeah, it's a short-term, but major, disappointment. Who knows when/if we'll get back to Hawaii. I hate to have him miss it, but we're going to try to cram in as much as we can in the time he has there. I'm getting more excited for things I want to do with Izzy while he's gone, so that helps (some hikes and drives).

Well, Dug survived his first week on the new job! :cool1: I think it will be a very good thing for him, professionally, but it's hard to get into a groove right away, especially trying to get to know your co-workers, who are all remote. The retreat will be really valuable for him to get some face-time with all of them.

Personally, it's already been a great change for all of us. Izzy has gone from a mama-mama-mama girl to an I-love-you-Daddy girl very quickly! I think Dug's more frequent presence and him picking her up from daycare have really strengthened their relationship, so that is great! :thumbsup2

It's been great for me too, as I've been able to sleep in about an extra hour each morning and not have to rush off from work by 3:30pm to pick Izzy up. I feel like a new person with that later-morning wake-up. Of course, I woke up early every morning in a panic, thinking it must be REALLY late. :rotfl: I've been awake enough to be able to read my Oahu Revealed book on the bus, rather than sleeping, as I used to do. I do miss picking Izzy up from daycare, though, but I can always go in early to do that sometimes, if I choose to.

So, things are off to a reasonably good start, I guess.

AND, Dug's airfare from Hawaii to the work retreat is booked! :woohoo: Our goal was to maximize the time he had in Hawaii while still getting him to/from the retreat at the right times. The resort is in Palm Springs, but the flights there from Oahu are really limited, so we were considering options like flying into San Diego or LAX. Otherwise, Dug would have to leave without seeing Pearl Harbor to fly directly into Palm Springs and arrive on time for the 8:30am breakfast on Monday morning, followed by the kick-off. However, his boss and the co-worker that books the travel both emphasized that they really, truly do care about each employee's well-being and they strongly encouraged taking a flight directly into Palm Springs to avoid driving, even though it wouldn't arrive until about an hour after the retreat had started. So, he went with that.

He will not have to leave until late at night on Sunday! :cool1: We had been expecting him to need to leave around lunchtime, shortly after Pearl Harbor, but this gives us the entire rest of the day! I'll have to drop him at the airport around 10pm, so Izzy is going to have a rough night of transferring from the crib/stroller to the carseat and back, but I'm so excited to have this extra time for Dug to join us sightseeing. I had put together some island touring plans for while he was gone and I was sad he was going to miss some neat stuff - but we switched things around and now he will get to see everything! We did have to drop the Hawaiian Railway train ride on Sunday, but I'm okay with that. The one at the Dole Plantation will probably be enough for Izzy anyway.

He will also get back to Hawaii a few hours earlier than we had anticipated on Friday! :yay: He gets in around noon, thanks to an early flight out. The travel schedule is probably going to run him ragged, but hoping he can handle it okay. He will be flying overnight and sleeping on the plane on the way to Palm Springs. He'll be flying out of Palm Springs at 6am to return. Both are connecting flights, but the last one is on Hawaiian Airlines, which we've heard is nice. It will be an adventure, that's for sure!

I think I am going to try to start up a series of posts in a couple days to do "this time in 1 month" and cover the plans for each day, since I keep changing them around. Hope they are a bit more firmed up, now that we know when Dug will be there. Obviously, none of this is really "ideal", but I'm getting excited about our plans, even the time with just me and Izzy. Just to sum it up: we'll get in on Friday evening, Dug will leave Sunday night, Dug will return the next Friday at noon, then we leave late at night that Sunday. So, he will have two full weekends and two partial Fridays with us. Monday-Thursday are entirely on our own without a lot of plans. Only a bit over a month to go! :cool1:
