Is one day in Vegas worth it?

My sister, neice and I are coming from Australia to Disneyland for 7 nights in January. My personal preference is to stay in DL the whole time so we don't have to rush around, but my sister has suggested we go to Las Vegas for one night. I personally don't think it would be worth it for one night, plus all the extra airport transfers/travel time cutting into our DL time, but what do others think?

Is there anywhere else interesting we could go as an overnight trip from DL? e.g. I was thinking the Grand Canyon but I don't know if that's feasible. I've already done a day tour of LA on my first trip to DL and my sister isn't interested in that. She also plans on going to Universal for a day (and she's having a few days in Hawaii on the way home).

I think it's worth it. It's only an hour or so by plane.

If you have interest in something like the Grand Canyon, I believe they have a one day, round trip bus tour of the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas. There are also helicopter tours of the Grand Canyon from Vegas as well. I've never taken one of these tours, so I'm not sure what part of the Grand Canyon you would see.

I would not be able to stay at DLR for 7 days so I'd opt for the one day to Las Vegas too.

I visit Las Vegas often since it's a short trip from home but this past summer, I took some Chinese visitors on a trip that started in San Francisco, went to Las Vegas and then on to Los Angeles. We spent one day in Las Vegas. We arrived early, we did a helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon that also flew over the Hoover Dam (it actually landed at the Grand Canyon so we were able to get out, take pictures, have a snack, etc), spent the evening seeing the sights on the strip of Las Vegas and then flew out the next morning.

Coming from Perth I can imagine how you want to try and fit as much in as you can in such an incredibly short amount of time. 7 days is a long time to spend at the resort....I would definately take 2 days to do Vegas and the Canyon. Everyone should see the Grand Canyon before they depart the mortal coil....and 24 hours in Vegas is simply not enough time.

Really look at trying to get out of Anaheim for at least 2 days or you really are selling yourself short.

1 day in Vegas = not worth it
1 night in Vegas = definitely worth it.

Flight cost and your budget will play a factor but you're coming a long way and who knows when you'll be back.

For a one day away from DLR I would first recomend San Diego.

I think OP's are right that you could take a second day to go to Vegas as 7 at DL is plenty.

The Grand Canyon though is in no way just a little ways from LV. It is about another 3 or 4 hours from Vegas, like LV is from DLR.

To Vegas I would drive. Seriously after getting to an airport, checking in, security, a plane may save you a little time but you will miss some incredible scenes along the drive. It's not cheap but you may want a helicopter tour of the canyon. It's some bang for your buck!

Also as PP said you will want to spend the night time in Las Vegas. A whole night and not get up early.

7 days at DL is way to much imho. Like the PP said you could look in to going to San Diego. It is only a two hour drive so you could make it a day trip but I would recomend at least staying one night. If you are not renting a car you can take Amrtrack. It's been a few years since I used it, but it is a nice ride along the ocean and I remember the tickets being quite reasonably priced. There is a station a few blocks from DL and it will drop you off in downtown San Diego. If you go to Vegas it is a very short plane trip. Southwest will probably be your cheapest option. The Grand Canyon is even further. It's an 8 hour drive from the LA area and a 6 hour drive from Las Vegas.

I think it depends on what you want to go to Vegas for. To gamble or to check it out. One day in vegas is going to be tight, I think. Although if you don't need much sleep you could have a really great time. If you are going primarily to gamble, I would stay at the Golden Nugget downtown. The casino's are very close together to hop around and try your luck at different places. If you are going to check it out, I'd stay on the Strip, eat a really great seafood buffet, like at the Bellagio and try to get in as much as you can. Now if you can add another night and make it 2 nights, I think it'd be better. We drove from disney to vegas last summer and it took 3-4 hours each way, stopping once both times. the drive wasn't bad, we said next time we'd look into flying. For one day, I'd stay in California.

I've never been to the Grand Canyon, I've been wanting to go for years, that'd be great if you could somehow fit that it. I've been to northern arizona, sedona, flagstaff, but we never made it to the Grand Canyon.

If you need help/suggestions on your Hawaii portion, let me know. I've lived on Oahu for 30+ years :)

Absolutely it is worth it to take a night in Vegas- 2 would be better but if you just can allow 1 night, I would go for it! Vegas is definitely a must-see once in your life!!!

1 day in Vegas = not worth it
1 night in Vegas = definitely worth it.

I agree with this 100%. My husband works for an airline so we can fly standby, and one night in Vegas is one of our favorite getaways. We can fit so much in during that one night. If we have a few days to play with, our usual combination is two days DLR/1 day Vegas.

I don't think I could do DLR for a whole week... it's not like WDW in that aspect.

I would opt for five nights in DLR and two in Vegas. Unless you plan to go again in the next couple of years then you can give Vegas and the Grand Canyon a bit more time.

If you are coming all that way from Australia, a one night visit to Las Vegas is definitely worth it. Two nights would be even better.

Yes! It is absolutely worth it. There's nothing quite like Vegas anywhere in the world. It's basically an amusement park that's the size of an entire city, but instead of focusing on children's entertainment, they focus on adults :cool1:
