I'm guessing for many,they were in the state of Inebration for much of college.

I spent 3 years in New Orleans where it was legal to drink (at 18) 24/7 just about anyplace - including the student union.

My next 2 years (grad school) were at Stanford where no alcohol could be served not only on campus but in restaurants within a mile and a half of the campus.

I think I would have been really bored at Stanford as an undergraduate.
