If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Barcelona! 7/18/07**Two Updates Added**!!

Thanks for the report Carol. Wow sounds like it much hotter than when we went just the cruise before yours. We had GREAT weather on the July 7th cruise.

We also had 190 pieces of missing luggage. Our one piece is still missing...

Greetings from Marseilles! This is the first day I've been able to successfully get DISBoards to load on the computers in the Internet Cafe on Deck 3. My family is zzzz'ing so I'm having a quick check of email :surfweb: while waiting to wake them for our shore excursion this morning.

This has been an amazing journey and I've met some wonderful DISBoarders! Can't wait to "catch up" and read everyone's trip reports.

Sorry again for not checking in for a few days! I cannot believe how busy we have been on this cruise and how little time there has been to do everything we wanted to.

Here are some updates on what we have been doing since Rome day.

The next day was LaSpezia when we had our Sarazana and Wine Tasting tour cancelled. We received the voicemail on the phone and then had to quickly see what was left for tour availability and what we might be interested in. We slept on it overnight and then decided on the Cinque Terre boat tour. Well that was all fine and well till the morning of the tour when we received another voice mail that due to inclement weather on the seas, we would be transported via bus instead of boat. This was disappointing as we soon found out we would only be seeing two of the five villages and the difficulty involved in transportation.

The bus needed to leave us at the top of the hill where we would then walk down to the village It was very steep and slippery since we had a light rain that morning. Once in the village we had a mile walk on the connecting road to the next village plus many stairs and walkways. I estimate it was about a two mile walk all total.

Since the Sarzana tour was "mild" this was far more strenuous. I had my cane with me for my bad leg, but it was still very difficult. I would caution against this tour for anyone with walking issues or baby strollers. It was definitely a problem for those folks.

Although I did not care for this tour it was actually my husband's favorite. So check it out and see what your personal needs are before booking.

My absolute favorite tour was Monaco, Monte Carlo and Eze. I loved the tour of the Grimaldi Palace, the lunch was fantastic and the Grand Casino was phenomenal. I could not make the whole walk up in Eze, but there were shops and cafes at the bottom as well. Definitely my favorite excursion.

We opted out of excursions in Marseilles and this was our least favorite port. I did not hear many good things about the tours there, and the free shuttle bus brought us to a marina area with miles of cafes, but few shops. I understand they were not too far, but all our walking did not bring us to any close by.

I will be providing more details and updates later. I am sitting at the Cove Cafe now on our last day at sea and I wanted to give a few more details. Talk later...

Thanks very much, I'll be there tomorrow and the info you have shared has been wonderful............

We just got off the 7/18 sailing on the Magic and have to agree with Carol Ann and Seaulater that it has been an awesome cruise. One of the couples that ended up getting 1 piece each of their lost luggage were across the hall from us on deck 7, so we got to see them often and comment to them about their wardrobe, or lack thereof. :rotfl2: I certainly do feel for them though, that would be awful to have spent all that time planning and packing and then to lose your luggage.:sad2:

Just in case anyone is interested and hadn't seen my blog address that I posted prior to departure, it is:

I have finally been able to get caught up on most of the ports, although I realize I totatlly forgot Olbia. We did do the Costa Smeralda excursion in the morning, and even though most shops were closed in Porto Cervo, the shops were open in Baia Sardinia as well as the local farmer's market was taking place on Sunday. It was really a neat place to walk thru and browse. We really didn't have enough time for serious shopping in the farmer's market. We enjoyed the scenery, especially some of the beautiful rock formations that our guide pointed out to us.

Hope you enjoy my blog.

Sandy, Thankyou for your blog. I enjoyed hearing about your days in port. What a wonderful way to celebrate 30 years of marriage !! I was esp interested in your tour to Portafino. We have decided it's too far to go to Florence. Have thought about Cinque Terre and Portofino on our own. But your tour sounds very good. What would you suggest ? Oh, we also have our 11 year old Grandson with us on our Aug 8 DCL Med tour. Thanks, Gina

Hi CarolAnn

We are home safety and it was a long day for us today and guess what we had three luggages missing at the Airport tonight:sad2: Glad that it was not on first day!! Cannot image that.

I see you almost everyday and didn't see you this morning to say goodbye!!

Hope you get home safety!!

It was lovely to meet you all.

Take Care

I am back from 10 days cruise and I remember that you were asking about travelling to Pisa/Florence.

Well we went to Pisa for half day in the morning. We left at La Sepzia by the disney bus and got there about one hour and 15 mins as it was bit far out BUT it was lovely view to see as it is beautiful country. I noticed that another place which the ship port called 'Livorno' is nearing the Pisa. But my point of view that we had enjoyed it.

But my mother and father in law went with Sandy and they said that it is really beautiful place at Portafino.

We are home!

Arrived home last evening around 6:30 pm cst via Chicago's O'Hare Airport. All in all it was not a bad trip home. Just very long and exhausting.

I would highly recommend SWISS airlines for those considering travel to Europe. They were very efficient and pleasant to fly with. The food was palatable with two meals and also snacks being served on the transatlantic flight via Zurich. We also had the beverage cart more times than one could count. But the biggest plus of all for them is that our 8 pieces of checked luggage made it back and forth with no problems at all!

Here are a couple of snippets from the trip as my overtired memory can recall, lol.

Do NOT try to shop in the ship's stores on the afternoon of Pirate Night. The crowd was unbelievable and all were in line with pirate gear for the evening attire.

Do visit the Quiet Cove coffee shop and have Arul mix you up a Mochachino! The best one I think I have had!

When you are on Disney Excursions, DO look for the Disney photographers at the various stops during the day.. We have lovely photos of us all at Pompeii, Rome and Monaco with some hunky gladiators joining the pix in Rome, lol. You can quick jump over from your excursion and strike a pose then resume touring without skipping a beat. Great idea DCL!

The travel size toilet paper came in handy for us a few times at least. Try to keep some of this in your purse or backpack as it may be a lifesaver!

When in Barcelona, we picked up some bottled waters to bring to the ship with us at a small market on Las Ramblas. We also purchased the water package on the ship, but could have made do with the waters we brought supplemented with single purchases during the day. The waters in Barcelona were .22 Euro or about 30 cents US. Phenomenal!

Be forwarned that the ship's self service laundry room is nothing short of a nightmare on this 10 day cruise. I think many are supplementing the trip with stays before and after, hence lots of clothes to be washed. One guy told me he went down at 3 am and it was crowded!

My tips are, bring a roll of US quarters with you for this. Also pack your own detergent and dryer sheets. Avoid laundry on the formal and semi formal days. Also, travel tide paks are great to wash out undies and bathing suits in the stateroom..

The various altercations were observed in there were involving the following - expect people to take your wet clothes out of washers and place on the table if you are not there shortly after the wash cycle is finished. There are just way too many people waiting to leave washed clothes sitting in a machine because nobody shows up for 5 minutes or even longer to remove it.

Also, please ask about the line status (how many, how long, etc) at the end of the line instead of squeezing into the crowded room and trying to view each washer for yourself. It is like a sauna in there with sardines packed in a can, lol.

Lastly, I sent my husband's dress shirts to be laundered as needed by the ship's laundry staff For $3 per shirt, it was well worth it as they washed and starched as requested, and pressed out nicely.. So I saved myself a lot of aggravation for $9 instead of the $2 and hours required to wash them myself. After all it is vacation!!

More later, but I am currently busy in my own personal laundry room here with mounds of vacation wash needing to be done! Ciao!!

Hi Gina,
This DCL excursion was a nice, scenic drive on the bus, via the highway. The guide pointed out beautiful views out each side of the bus as we made our way towards the Santa M. Portofino exit. The reason for taking the highway is that the coastal road thru many little towns are so narrow and crowded that it would have taken the bus forever. This way, you have minimal village roads to navigate and you get to the destination much quicker.

Both Portofino and Santa M are wonderful little villages, plenty of time to walk around, sightsee, shop, munch on pastries, take pictures and enjoy the pizza lunch provided. What frustrated me most were the people that brought along toddlers on this excursion. There is nothing that they would enjoy on this tour. I am sure your 11 year old grandson would enjoy the boat ride between the two cities, but unless he really likes wandering thru the streets of these little towns while Grandma and Grandpa window shop etc., he probably would have more fun being left with at the kids club onboard the ship. But you know your grandson best. I am just giving my honest opinion about whether it is worthwhile to pay for kids under 12 to go on this excursion. But otherwise, we throroughly enjoyed the tour and would recommend it. Hope this helps.

Carol - I had similar views in the laundry rooms, although I was fortunate to arrive most of the time without needing to wait in a line for a machine (I'll chalk it up to pixie dust), but during the course of doing my own laundry, I witnessed a few grumpy passengers -- and what's up with one person thinking that they can use three washers at once?????? I mean, I do understand if there are three vacant when you get in there and no one is waiting, but one woman came in and claimed three and held onto all three even when another person came in behind her needing just one. (And interestingly enough, this same person was NOT THERE to remove her laundry in a timely manner - and one washer she only had a single pair of shoes in it.) I also had someone jump on the dryer on top of the washer I was using when my washer had just one minute left AND I was sitting there. So I had to wait for a couple of minutes for someone else's drying to finish. Somehow I always thought that laundry-room-etiquette is that you use the dryer on top of the washer you're using - makes things nice and simple and a heck of a lot easier for transporting wet laundry.

I had several conversations with people telling horror stories of laundry room experiences, but I had more conversations with people about their wonderful adventures in the beautiful ports we visited.

We agreed that the laundry room was a nightmare because like you mentioned that people had pre-trip stays so therefore more laundry, also spending more time in confined quarters with their family members likely made people a bit more edgy than they'd like to admit and therefore they took it out in the laundry room (airing dirty laundry, you might say?!).

As for vacation laundry, I thought I had it all done yesterday but found one more stash of dirty clothes, so NOW it's all done! Just in time to pack the children for Camp Grandma - they leave tomorrow for a few days :) I should've just sent them with their dirty clothes/????

Just wanted to say "hi", CarolAnnC! We met you and your husband outside the Cove Cafe on the Magic during the 7/18 - 28 Mediterranean sailing (we were some of the other "regulars" in that lovely, comfortable spot, who overheard you and your husband discussing the many virtues of DVC ownership..........and the DIS Boards...... with another couple! :))! Loved reading your trip reports (.......especially since we were there at the same time and I could recall seeing you WRITING your trip reports, while looking out at the beautiful sea and port views! :))! We also had a fantastic time on the Cruise and are fantasizing about hopping on a flight back to Barcelona and jumping back on the Magic for her Transatlantic return to Florida, in a few days! :)

Hi out there to all of the DIS Mediterranean Cruisers! It was a MAGICal summer, for sure :)

Hi IASW!! Yes, I remember you well! The other couple we were talking with went ahead and made their DVC purchase while on board the ship! (Thanks guys!)

We were regulars at Cove Cafe for sure! Just loved those mochaccinos! Would you really be able to run back and bring the Magic home? Lucky lucky you! I would love to do that myself.

Glad you enjoyed the cruise and nice to have met you both as well...
