How to tell kids about BBB and Pirate's League?

We've got appointments for both kids at BBB and Pirate's League. I'm trying to figure out how to tell them; do I want to surprise them, or tell them now? How did you tell your kids?

We did BBB at 6 years old with our daughter. I just showed pictures of little girls on the internet that had it done and asked if she would like to have that done too. She happily said yes and then just moved onto her next thing in her day. Wasn't overly excited or overly under-excited. However, at the actual appointment she was absolutely beside herself with excitement and joy. Seeing everything in person really made a difference.
