Hi,

Ok we are new members having just bought resale. We bought 50 points at Boardwalk Villas with a April Use Year. We currently have 54 points available. I'm guessing 4 from 2013 and the 50 from this year.

We are planning a trip in October 2015. I am trying to work out, including banking and borrowing (we are only planning to go every 2-3 years), how many points will we be able to use?

Thanks.

IF the 4 is from the 2013 UY then the 4 will expire on April 1st 2015. So for your 2015 oct trip you will have 150 points available to use. That is if you bank the 50 2014 points into 2015 and you borrow 50 2016 points into 2015.

2013 4 EXPIRES April 1 2015
2014 50
2015 50
2016 50

But you need to find out the exact point situation. Resale contracts can be anything. You could have 50 2013 points and only 4 2014 points. If that's the case 50 points may expire April 2015 and you will only have 104 points to use in Oct.

...or worse...

It could be 4 from this year and 50 borrowed from 2015 which would leave you with 54 available for next October.

2014: 4
2015: 0
2016: 50

Hi,

Ok I have looked into it and it is 4 from 2014 and 50 coming in 2015. So if I borrow the 50 from 2016 as well, does that mean I will have 104 points available for my October 2015 trip?

Thanks

So you have now:

2014 4
2015 50
2016 50

Points need to be in the use year you want to use them. So if you want to use 104 points in Oct of 2015 UY then you will need to bank the 4 from 2014 and borrow the 50 from 2016 into the 2015 UY.

So yes. You will have 104 points available to use for Oct 2015.

NOTE: if the 4 points in 2014 were banked into 2014 (i.e. from 2013) you will not be able to bank them again. Points can only be borrowed or banked 1 time.

Just an FYI, that you only need to borrow the number of points you need for a reservation.

E.g.Your October reservation requires 90 points.

2014 - 4 points
2015 - 50 points
2016 - 36 points
total = 90 points

The remaining 20 points for 2016 can be used for another reservation in 2016 or banked into 2017 and used with your 2017 and even your 2018 points for another reservation in 2017.

You often end up with dangling points that are not usuable with small contracts. One time use points often help use up these small amounts. But cost $15 per point to purchase.

That's really helpful. Thank you.

I may be starting to get the hang of this dvc thing.

I do keep wondering about more points though. Addonitis?

You may want to check your closing documents and make sure they didn't charge you a maint fee reimbursement or only for 4 points if they did. Even then you'd be overpaying by few months but otherwise you'd be overpaying by a year and 3 months if they charged you full dues.
